Today marks our 200th podcast! We speak with Alaya Dannu who converses with her ancestors in her dreams and has learned how to pray using sacred dance steps. She describes these dreams as the transmission of ancestral memory across generations. They always arise from lucid dreams and yet cannot be incubated or controlled. We speak about the difference between ancestral dreams and past life dreams and about how the body is a sacred amplifier of energy. We take a call from Chris from Felton who asks about the difference between ancestor dreams and visitation dreams, and she shares a lucid dream in which her grandfather tells her, "Life has an undeniable will." We also talk about Alaya's podcast Cosmogenia and her role in the IASD June conference in Ashland. She will open and close the event with sacred dances and lead a workshop in which you can learn how to use AI generative art to express your dreams visually. I just experienced a Golden Window and I want to share with you how I got organized to embark on my back-to-school journey! When I shared with you all that I'm going back to school to earn a PhD, I got a lot of suggestions. So many amazing suggestions that I literally started a pink slash pocket so I wouldn't lose any of these valuable ideas. And, of course, I want to share everything with you. Here's why - this journey is super helpful if you are also going back to school (whether you're working towards a PhD or a different degree). And it's also helpful to apply my journey and my experiences to any and all of life's changes. The type of organizing I'm doing to get ready for my PhD experience is no different than the type of organizing and preparation I would recommend for any life change or transition - having a baby, moving, starting a new job, getting ready to retire, getting ready to welcome grandchildren. When you are getting ready to make a change (especially one that will impact your daily schedules and routines) it's important to look around your home and at your organizational systems to make them as functional, organized and efficient as possible for what life is going to look like for the foreseeable future. This is a whole new life transition. Remember recently when I explained the difference between Ready…Set…Go? I have completed all household projects, put systems in place, reorganized my schedule, and I am in “Go” mode. This has been a major transition for me and I really evaluated how I spend my time, my habits, my routines, and looked for 30 hours I could devote to my post-baccalaureate first, and then my PhD. I will be taking you all on this journey with me. I could not be more excited and in four short years I will have earned my General PhD in Psychology from Fielding University! In the episode, host David Pluviose sits down with Dr. Wendi Williams, Fielding Graduate University's new provost and senior vice president. Tune in as Dr. Williams shares how her experiences as a first-generation college student shaped the way she thinks about what it means to be an educator, educational administrator, and psychologist. She shares how she plans to move the ball forward on important diversity issues and craft a student experience centered on health, wellness, and academic achievement. KEY POINTS: - What attracted Dr. Williams to the field of psychology? - The experiences of first-generation students. - How Dr. Williams's background informs her work today. - Fielding University's mission when it comes to student inequities. - Reaching and supporting diverse learners. QUOTABLES: “My background certainly has placed me in the position of seeing systems and structures and institutions that were not working in my favor and were not working with or for me. So, it really puts me in a space of ‘what would it have looked like for it to work for me or to work for my friends.” “As a woman, as a psychologist, as a black woman, who's a black feminist psychologist, I understand and connect these elements of who I am with my professional and my political, and that all sort of sits inside of my research. But also, my practice as a leader — I think that it's critically important to lead in an authentic space to own all of who I am and to model that for others.” PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Watch this video and others on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/user/Diversediversedivers Visit the Diverse: Issues In Higher Education website: diverseeducation.com Or follow us on social media: Twitter: twitter.com/diverseissues Instagram: instagram.com/diverseissuesinhighereducation Facebook: facebook.com/DiverseIssuesInHigherEducation/ Linkedin: linkedin.com/company/diverse-issues-in-higher-education Transcription services are available upon request. Welcome to The Bliss Project Podcast! In today's episode, we chat with our friend, Psychotherapist, Author and Life Coach Sarah Brokaw. Like all worthwhile endeavors in life, the path to becoming a psychotherapist and certified coach was long, challenging and incredibly rewarding. They have shaped her into the effective practitioner she is today. After graduating from Duke University, she earned my master's in social work from New York University and her license in clinical social work in New York and California., She underwent eight years of specialized training in family and couple therapy at The Ackerman Institute a two-year postgraduate program at Fielding University, for personal coaching. She has completed the National Institute for Psychotherapies psychoanalytic year-long training and completed three levels of training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. She also completed two levels of training in Trauma Resiliency Model—at the Trauma Institute, and received specialized instruction in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy under Marsha Linehan, PhD, ABPP. A major highlight of her career was her time at Four Winds Hospital, where she worked with a team of psychiatrists, nurses, and mental health professionals to develop and implement the most effective inpatient treatment plan for a group of latency-age children residing there. Another significant moment was providing group therapy for individuals directly impacted by the 9/11 attacks. During the process of writing Fortytude, she was inspired by the remarkable women she met and launched a discussion series called Wise Women of LA. Women of diverse backgrounds met and supported one another in achieving major professional and personal goals. She also created Shared Secrets, a podcast amplifying the healing power of shared vulnerability. Her volunteer work has brought her to many amazing countries, including Rwanda, Bosnia and Haiti. She currently serves as a volunteer therapist for Homeboy Industries, which provides hope, training and support to formerly gang-involved and incarcerated men and women. In this episode we discuss: Sarah's story and her journey as a therapist What led her to doing this work more specifically working with couples and families Her journey across the country in writing Fortytude Social media.. the positive and negative influence it can have Her own personal journey in becoming a mom How she is continuing to expand in her work today Connect with and learn more about Sarah here: Website: www.sarahbrokaw.com Learn More About The Bliss Project and Us: www.theblissproject777.com Connect with us here: theblissproject777@gmail.com Instagram: @TheBlissProject777 @noelteubner @msuar12 Music By Mark Adler --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theblissproject/support
Well folks, its about that time to start calling it dunzo for the season...With that comes a whole new set of challenges - The boredom, the part where you have to explain to the "normies" what you do for work, the awkward reintegration into your own family, figuring out what you're going to do during the winter, the holidays, where you're going to live - The list goes on...All of this stacks up, and it can be an overwhelming experience for the folks that are young in the game... It can even be more difficult for the folks that are seasoned in the fire game.Thats why we have Shannon Mead on the show today to talk about the importance of having a plan for the off season, and also not having a "Glide-path" to actually wind down from the adrenaline high and stress of the fire season.Heres a little more about Shannon:Shannon Mead is a local clinician in Reno, Nevada who specializes in military, law enforcement, wildland firefighters, and first responders..."As a therapist, adoptive mom, and friend/family member to a whole bunch of first responders - I know that helping takes a heavy toll on those who are willing to shoulder the burden. And unfortunately, the existing supports aren't always helpful (to put it kindly). Whether I am working with individuals, couples, or an entire organization, my purpose is to strengthen those who sacrifice for our community. I have a Masters degree in Couple and Family Therapy from Antioch University and a corporate coaching certificate from Fielding University. I am intrigued by systems and patterns, and as a therapist I tend to be practical and straightforward. Perhaps that is because I spent many years as a tech and data consultant before pivoting into counseling. Over the years I have become increasingly interested in compassion fatigue and secondary trauma, and focused most of my research on these topics. As a foster/adoptive parent I have felt the burden myself, but have also seen it in the lives of my guardian friends and family. I absolutely hate that those who step in to help are often chewed up by the roles and I'm working hard to do something about it."She is just one of the many "culturally competent clinicians" out there that are available... Please feel free to use her practice as a resource this season. You can find her practice here:https://www.stackofstones.com Shannon also just produced a training video with some great tips on winding down for the off season! You can find that video, and a bunch of other good stuff at the following links here:https://www.stackofstones.com/wildland-resourceshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuxxAjOcs6P5MfZC8NCoPHgCall her, email her, do whatever you need to do to take care of yourselves before, during, and after the fire season! You know the drill...Stay safe, stay savage...Enjoy!..........................Updates!We launched a Patreon!!! In this episode, you’ll learn more about the Brainspotting modality as we discuss applications such as Performance Expansion, Future Self-Spotting, and Neuro Coaching. My guest is Cindy S. Smith, a therapist, Brainspotting consultant, and executive coach. Read more about Cindy and follow the links to her practice below. Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more. The mantras from the episode are as follows: Mantra #1: Brainspotting has a Performance Expansion Model that can be used to tap into growth, creativity and peak performance. Mantra #2: Brainspotting can be used to identify a “future self” to envision an optimal life through multi-sensory perception. Double spotting is another technique within the modality that allows for the processing of the transformation between “current self” and “ideal/future self”. Mantra #3: Neuro-coaching is about working with the nervous system to meet goals and objectives including creativity, overcoming limiting beliefs, and expanding performance. Mantra #4: Bilateral stimulation works as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system so that we can self-regulate and perhaps even integrate memories. Mantra #5: There are “Brainspots” (fixed eye positions that correlate to neurological pathways) all around us. With our brain containing a quadrillion connections, “brainspots” can be considered within a 3-dimensional, 360-degree framework. More about Cindy J. Jerri Lynn Hogg, Director of the Media Psychology PhD program at Fielding University joins Holly for a conversation about virtual reality and where it’s taking us. From educational environments that we can now create, to augmented and virtual spaces, we ask the questions of how are we changing as we become more connected this way and how is technology influencing us? Beverley became determined to dedicate her life’s work to alleviating mental disorders caused by trauma; now she’s achieved that with documented scientific evidence being released now. The attempted rape experience triggered off flashbacks of horrendous abuse as a child, which had been locked away in her deep sub-conscious. Those flashbacks caused extreme anxiety/panic/depression; the psychiatrists said she was hallucinating and prescribed heavy medication. Finally able to get collaboration for some of her flashbacks, she knew what she saw was real, but the medical model could not provide answers, and this became the trigger to search for a way to get well. It took 10 years. A story of sheer tenacity and perseverance, Beverley researched, attended conferences on PTSD and volunteered for 7 years in mental health organisations. Listen to Beverley’s podcast as she describes a profound meeting she had that became the catalyst for her to develop a 9 step formula called ‘My Envisioned Mind’ (My.EM) which now many people have experienced positive results. She set up a Not for Profit organisation where her goal was to give free therapy after hearing a cry for help from returning soldiers (more have died from suicide than killed in the war), but was told as her ‘My.EM’ approach was not an evidence-based therapy, it could not be used. Tenacity kicked in again so in her 70th year, Beverley along with a PhD student from Fielding University set out to prove that 10 hours with ‘My.EM’ worked. They did that. I believe that education is a lifelong pursuit that occurs in and outside the classroom. I graduated from Duke University, earned a Masters in Social Work from New York University, and received my License in Clinical Social Work in both New York and California. But I didn’t stop there. I also received specialized training in working with families and couples from the esteemed Ackerman Institute, and finished a postgraduate program at Fielding University for Executive Coaching. Additionally, I am a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and have completed the National Institute for Psychotherapies psychoanalytic training. I also recently completed Levels 1, 2, and 3 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy as well as specialized instruction in TRM (Trauma Resiliency Model), a mind-body approach for treating affairs and trauma. My professional experience includes therapy for latency-aged children at Four Winds Hospital and group therapy for individuals who either worked in the World Trade Center or were nearby during the 9/11 attacks. Inspired by the remarkable women I met while researching Fortytude, I launched a discussion series called Wise Women of LA in which women of diverse backgrounds could meet, share and support each other in achieving their professional and personal goals. Of course, women don’t have a monopoly on hard-won wisdom. So recently, I created a podcast series called Shared Secrets in which men and women with wisdom to share graciously let us in on their secrets. I hope these enlightening discussions empower you to share your own secret wisdom. My work to help men and women harness their internal power and pursue their goals continues in my volunteer work, which has taken me to locations including Rwanda, Bosnia and Haiti. I serve on the board of Equality Now, an organization whose aim is to end violence and discrimination against women around the world.
