About Grange's Legendary Performance in the 1924 Dedication Game  On Oct. 18, 1924, Red Grange put together one of the greatest performances the college football world has ever seen. On the day of Memorial Stadium's Dedication Game and against a Michigan team that arrived in Champaign on a 20-game unbeaten streak, Grange glided through the Wolverine defense with ease. He set the tone early with a 95-yard return on the opening kickoff, and he was only just getting started. Five minutes later, he recorded his second score of the game, this time on a 67-yard rush. Within the opening 12 minutes of play, he amassed four touchdowns, and he finished the contest with six total scores and over 400 total yards of offense. The Wolverines allowed only 32 points during their 20-game unbeaten run. In the Illini's 39-14 win over Michigan, Red Grange accounted for 36 points on his own. Earning the now-iconic "Galloping Ghost" nickname following a performance that remains unrivaled one century later, Grange cemented himself in college football history forever. "Michigan never knew Red Grange, the Illinois wildcat, until today. Now Michigan knows him well," wrote James Crusinberry of the Chicago Tribune in 1924. "He stamped himself as one of the greatest football stars of all time, East or West."

When Football Is Football is part of the https://sportshistorynetwork.com/ (Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Your Favorite Sport's Yesteryear). EPISODE SUMMARY As kids, we all looked up to our favorite athletic heroes. After all, they were taller than us, so looking up at them, literally, was a realistic requirement as well as a figure of speech. In this episode of “When Football Was Football” we'll look back at the life and career of a pro football hall of famer, who was one of those very few athletes who also played pro basketball and major league baseball. He was an All-American, won a Rose Bowl, was selected as an All-Pro eight times, and was the finest field goal kicker of his generation. He could shoot hoops from the outside and his speed could easily turn singles into doubles on the baseball diamond. In short, he was a giant among men even though he stood just 5'8' and weighed about 160 lbs. His name was John Leo Driscoll, but we can call him Paddy! Read the entire episode blog post and check out some other cool info regarding this https://sportshistorynetwork.com/football/nfl/paddy-driscoll (episode here). WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL BACKGROUND Each episode takes the listener back to the very early days of the National Football League. Author Joe Ziemba will share a forgotten or lost story from one of the NFL's two oldest teams: The Bears and the Cardinals. Team championships, individual exploits, or long-buried items of interest from the earliest years of the NFL will be dusted off and resurrected for the listener. Not for the football faint-of-heart since these programs will document when the struggling Bears nearly went out of business or when Cardinals' players earned $15 a game and were proud of it! It's NFL history—with a twist!. Air Date: Wednesday, June 11, 2013 We're talking to author Peter Benjaminson, who penned Mary Wells: The Tumultuous Life of Motown's First Superstar.    EXCERPT: CHAPTER 15: JACKIE WILSON AND CARL DAVIS In 1965, while Mary Wells and Maye James-Holler were staying at the Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan waiting for their luxury apartment to be decorated, Wells decided to go to a Jackie Wilson concert. Since she was now an international superstar, Wilson's handlers couldn't help noticing that she was in the audience. Since they also knew that she had written her first song for Wilson, they would have been terribly remiss had they not invited her backstage after the show. Wilson reminded Wells of how much he admired her singing. Wells reminded him sincerely that she thought he was a great artist and that she had admired his music for years. Not one to miss a cue, Wilson, who was separated from his wife, immediately invited her to dinner. She accepted, and they went out to a fancy restaurant. He immediately heightened his appeal to Wells by educating her on what he saw as some of the nuances of high living, a likely turn-on for the semi-fatherless girl from inner-city Detroit. When Wilson asked Mary if she would like a drink and she suggested scotch and water, he told her a lady always drinks pink ladies and raspberry daiquiris and ordered her one of each, so she could choose. After she picked one and drank it, he told her, "This is as far as I ever want to you go, just a small drink every night." From Wells's point of view, "He had finesse, he had ...class. He knew the best places to eat. He knew how to conduct himself as a gentleman." To top it all off, over the next few days, she said, Wilson brought her $25,000 worth of clothing. Then the trouble began...

Who is Motown's first real star? The answer, of course, is Mary Wells, singer of such classics as “My Guy,” “Bye Bye Baby,” “The One Who Really Loves You,” “You Beat Me to the Punch,” and “Two Lovers,” among others. All of these hits were released in just four years between 1960 and 1969. In Mary Wells: The Tumultuous Life of Motown's First Superstar (Chicago Review Press, 2012) author Peter Benjaminson chronicles the life of this singular performer from her early days as a young rock ‘n' roll diva to her last years struggling with cancer. Along the way we learn that Wells was a tireless performer. She never stopped touring, never stopped reaching for the brass ring of financial success that eluded her for much of her career. It seems she never did receive the money she felt she deserved for the songs she released for Motown, while the record company appeared to rake in a handsome profit. She left Motown in 1964, released records with a number of different labels over the next twenty-six years, and finally received a paltry $100,000 from a law suit she filed against Motown in the late eighties. Whatever the case, Benjaminson shows well how Mary Wells star still shines bright. Her songs are known by most everyone, they are ingrained in the American popular psyche. Peter Benjaminson is the author of The Lost Supreme: The Life of Dreamgirl Florence Ballard, The Story of Motown, and co-author of Investigative Reporting. He has written numerous articles for the Detroit Free Press and Atlanta Journal-Constitution among others. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
