The Cuvers. Hendrik Cuver and his wife Amber Cuver, from CuVer Brewery in Windsor, join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. They are here to talk about their Windsor, California brewery where they specialize in Belgian beer. Hendrik was on this episode of Brew Ha Ha back on September 16, 2021, when they were just opening the brewery. He was also on this episode on May 5, 2022, a year and a half later. Also today, Harry Duke will be calling in live from Russian River Brewing Co. in Windsor. The Pliny the Younger public event is in full swing there. His portion of this live radio show will be on this separate podcast episode page, to allow each guest to have their own audio and podcast indexing. Cuver's Origin Hendrick and his father were used to drinking Belgian beers when they immigrated to California in 2012. A year later they started home brewing in order to have the beer that they wanted. They continued doing that while Hendrick was back in Belgium getting his Master's degrees in Biochemistry. Then when St. Florian's brewery came up for sale, they made the purchase. The history of Cuver Brewery and the two families that founded it are closely intertwined. Hendrick invited his fiancée Amber and her family to meet his family at Thanksgiving. Amber's father Reed Cushing became a partner in the brewery. When Hendrick and Amber got married, they changed their surnames to Cuver, derived from combining Cushing and Verspecht. Read the whole story on the Cuver website, on this page. In this episode, our long-term guest, Barbara, has been traveling around the United States in her RV since September. She is currently in an RV resort in Mesa, Arizona, and has been participating in activities such as painting and watercolor classes, Pickleball, golf, and lapidary. She has been enjoying the social aspect of the RV resort, attending concerts and Food Truck Fridays, and making friends with Canadian RVers. However, she has also encountered challenges, such as expensive diesel prices, limited space, finding mail and prescriptions, and navigating health care options. She has also learned about Canadian RVers' struggles due to the restrictions on how long they can stay and the expensive insurance they need. Barbara shares her experience of alternating between hosting her extended family at her house for Thanksgiving and Christmas and taking a trip this year instead. She was given permission to do this by her daughter and daughter-in-law. However, due to the travel nightmares that were happening, she decided not to fly anywhere during the holidays. Instead, they spent Christmas with her 87-year-old father, who lives nearby. Kathe and Barbara also discussed the possibility of downsizing and living in a motorhome full-time. Kathe brought up house-sitting as an inexpensive way to travel, and you can find out more (and get a discount on the program) by going to https://RockYourRetirement.com/THS Finally, they briefly discussed a book called The Blue Zones that looked at seven different communities around the world with a high percentage of people over 100 years old, all of which had strong communities. She ended the conversation with the takeaway of taking risks and being open to new experiences, and having fun.

Lead Thru Values
54. It's The Little Things That Cause Culture Drift

Lead Thru Values

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 12, 2022 21:17

Today I want to talk with you about the word “drift.”Here in the midwest we have snow drifts in the winter that can be both beautiful and dangerous on the roads. If you're into motorsports and racing - especially the virtual type - then the word drift is exciting and fun as you create a controlled high speed slide around corners. But what happens when drift occurs in your business? I'm specifically speaking about culture drift. And that's the topic for today's episode, so let's get started.Let's talk about the impact culture has on reaching your objectives and goals.First, your organizational culture is a set of shared beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that either enhances how you get work done… or gets in the way of how you get work done.Don't miss this… Your culture exists whether you're paying attention to it or not, and just because you've done a workshop or two about company culture and your core values are on the wall, you will not have lasting results. None of those things will ensure that your employees are doing exceptional work on the most significant things. Culture isn't just something you discuss in meetings. And, culture isn't created because you have potlucks in the summer, team building games, Food Truck Fridays, or because you added a game room with foosball  air hockey and table tennis. Now don't get me wrong, those are NOT bad things. But they could be bad things when they take priority over improving the working conditions such as replacing slow computers, addressing quality or safety issues, or holding purposeful meetings so employees know where they stand. We have to remember that culture is something you DO daily. It's a collection of attitudes, beliefs and actions that define…HOW you serve your customers;HOW you help employees grow;HOW you make strategic decisions;HOW you develop products and go to market;HOW you attract, hire and retain people; In short, your culture sets the expectations for everything you do in business. How many of you have a statement on your company's website or job postings that states something like, “We pride ourselves in consistently delivering outstanding customer service?”What you may not realize is just how lofty that statement actually is!You're really setting the bar high by using words such as consistently outstanding. Now I'm not suggesting you don't use those words, but what I am suggesting is that a culture that supports those words is a company that makes that a reality instead of ‘good intention.'That means you and everyone in the company understands what it takes to deliver a consistent and outstanding experience for your customers. You will need to define, communicate and constantly teach the behaviors that lead to that desired outcome. This is the point when most culture initiatives fail. If you aren't defining and clearly communicating your expectations it's impossible and unethical to hold people accountable to them. What happens next is what I'm referring to as culture drift.

Losing your mind with Chris Cosentino

Tiffani Faison Chef and Restaurateur of Big Heart HospitalitySweet Cheeks Q, Fool's Errand, Orfano, Dive Bar, Tenderoni's and Bubble Bath Chef and Restaurateur Tiffani Faison of Sweet Cheeks Q, Fool's Errand, Orfano, Dive Bar, Tenderoni's and Bubble Bath, has made a name for herself nationwide for her dynamic personality, culinary prowess and fierce work ethic. Under Big Heart Hospitality, her Boston based restaurant group, she creates restaurants that are warm, inspired and instantly loveable. Tiffani began her career working under world renowned chefs as Daniel Boulud, Alain Ducasse and Todd English. Early in her career she was cast on the inaugural season of Bravo's Top Chef, and placed as runner-up. From there she worked in prestigious kitchens in Nantucket, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before returning to Boston in 2010 to become Executive Chef of Southern Italian restaurant, Rocca Kitchen & Bar. After transforming Rocca into a critically acclaimed dining destination with a three star review from The Boston Globe, Tiffani set her sights on creating her own restaurant. She opened Sweet Cheeks Q in 2011 during the very early stages of Fenway's revitalization. Drawing inspiration from her love of Southern barbecue and extensive travels in Texas, Sweet Cheeks became an instant hit for its laidback Southern charm and addictive offerings: Heritage Pulled Pork, Brisket, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Biscuits with Honey Butter. Shortly after opening, Sweet Cheeks garnered a three-star review from The Boston Globe, and it has been awarded “Boston's Best Barbecue” numerous times by Boston magazine. Nationally, Forbes deemed Sweet Cheeks' biscuits the “Best Biscuits in the World.” Most importantly, Tiffani created a restaurant that is both a neighborhood gem and a dining destination attracting guests from near and far who are simply seeking the city's best ‘cue. In December 2015, Tiffani expanded on her culinary skills, creativity and business savvy with a new restaurant: Tiger Mama, found on the same block as Sweet Cheeks in the Fenway. The seeds of Tiger Mama formed during Tiffani's travels to Southeast Asia and the restaurant set a new benchmark, both for her career and Boston's dining culture. In its April 19, 2016 review, The Boston Globe agreed, calling Tiger Mama “a spectacular restaurant” with dishes that you'll “take to the grave” and hospitality that “feels generous and natural.” In October 2021, Faison closed Tiger Mama to make way for an exciting new restaurant concept she's excited to debut in the same space sometime in 2022. In August 2018, Tiffani opened her third restaurant – an adult snack bar called Fool's Errand. With an irreverent menu and intimate atmosphere, Fool's Errand neighbors Sweet Cheeks Q and on Boylston Street in Boston's Fenway. The snack forward menu works with top quality, luxurious ingredients to deliver irreverent bites. Classic American cocktails, done beautifully and with care, join a rotating list of internationally sourced wines and aperitifs. In August 2019, Tiffani opened her fourth restaurant, Orfano, an Italian American restaurant, also located in the Fenway. Guided by the whimsy of “sorry Nonna,” Orfano is Tiffani's most upscale restaurant to date featuring next level Italian – delicious, elegant, humorous, and distinctly different than anything else in Boston. Food & Wine included Orfano as one of its “19 Biggest Restaurant Openings of 2019” while Boston Globe Magazine named Orfano as one of the “best new restaurants in Boston”. In its Feb 2020 review of the restaurant, Boston Magazine proclaimed Orfano “a triumphant modern take on Italian”. In March 2022, Tiffani will open three distinct concepts within High Street Place, the much anticipated food hall in downtown Boston: Dive Bar, a raw bar featuring a menu of both northern and southern Atlantic classics, Tenderoni's, an old school pizza and grinder shop, and Bubble Bath, a Champagne and wine bar that cheekily pairs its pours with gourmet hot dogs and popcorn. Marking her many culinary achievements, the James Beard Foundation nominated Tiffani as “Best Chef: Northeast” three years in a row (2018, 2019 & 2020) and Boston magazine awarded her “Best Chef: General Excellence” in its 2016 “Best of Boston” issue. In November 2016 and 2019, the Boston Business Journal named Tiffani to its “Power 50” list, celebrating individuals from Boston's multiple industries and professions who are making a difference in their business communities. In December 2019, The Boston Globe named Big Heart Hospitality as “Restaurateurs of the Year” andEater named Tiffani “Empire Builder of the Year.”Outside of the kitchen, Tiffani is currently a judge on Food Network's Chopped. After placing as runner-up on Top ChefSeason One, Faison later competed on Top Chef All-Stars and Top Chef Duels. She's also previously been a judge on Food Network's Chopped Grill Masters and Cooking Channel's Fire Masters. Tiffani has made frequent appearances on NBC's TODAY, CBS This Morning, PBS's Simply Ming and was the host of “Tiffani's Taste” and “Food Truck Fridays” on New England Cable News. She has been a contributing chef to numerous cookbooks and has been widely featured in such national outlets as People, SELF, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated and Food & Wine. She also currently serves on the Board of Directors for Women Chefs & Restaurateurs and also BAGLY (Boston Alliance of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Youth). In September 2019, Tiffani was appointed to The Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Restaurant Promotion Commission for her commitment to the states restaurant business as a whole. Tiffani lives in Boston and is a tireless advocate of LGBTQ human rights.

Maggie Gray came to NZ on an OE, worked with Mastercard during the Rugby World Cup and then fell in love with the place. Somewhat unusually, she started a food truck just after she became a Mum.She wanted flexibility on the job and the ability to work around her kids' needs, something her corporate career was unable to give her. Maggie was on a run in her local park while training for the half marathon when she spotted a Mr. Whippy truck pull up and people start gravitating towards it. As a busy mum she was an avid smoothie drinker and seeing the truck made her realise how amazing it would be if there was a similar truck but one that sold smoothies instead of ice-cream.This was in 2015 and despite what the movies showed, running a food truck selling quality food was extremely difficult and still a relatively new concept in Auckland. People associated food trucks with low quality hot chips and hot dog vendors. During winter there was a lack of events and so she partnered with a fellow food truck owner Timothy van der Werff of Double Dutch fries to organise their own street food event. Amazingly, hundreds of people were lining out the door to support their favourite food trucks and that is how the idea for the Food Truck Collective was born. An organisation that is dedicated to showcasing the brilliant people behind the food trucks we all love to eat at. Five years on, Maggie and Timothy use their knowledge of food trucks and what makes an outstanding event to organise events all over Auckland. Auckland Fried Chicken Festival, Auckland Vegan Food Festival and Food Truck Fridays at Britomart are just some of their popular events. On our episode we talk about:Realities of running a food truck while also being a MumWhy appearances are key, both for the food you serve as well as your food truckWhat it takes to organise a successful street food eventWorking in partnership with food truck owners – why that's key to a successful eventSocial Links:Food Truck Collective on Instagram @foodtruckcollectivenz . On today’s show hosts Erin Chambers Smith and Troy Johnson along with producer Archana Ram discuss the shock of Anthony Bourdain’s death and the legacy he’ll leave. In our local scene, there’s the opening of Punch Bowl Social and Prepkitchen San Marcos, as well as the Red Fox Room and Aero Club’s moves. Today’s guest is Jennifer Davies, the San Diego Tourism Authority’s Director of Cultural Tourism for Balboa Park. We talk about the park’s Food Truck Fridays series and what’s going on with the restaurant scene in one of San Diego’s most visited landmarks. In hot topics, we’re discussing how people are pointing fingers at a local hospitality group for the death of hundreds of fish in Lake San Marcos. When reached for comment, the group, which handles day-to-day activities of the lake, referred us to a work plan organized by the Citizens Development Corporation, which maintains upkeep of the lake. They say they “are currently working with stakeholders, residents of the surrounding community, and State regulators to arrive at a long term solution to many issues including nutrients, excess algae, and fish kills at the Lake.” We’re also chatting about Jimbo’s suing Horton Plaza. They claim the shopping center’s lackluster performance has cost the natural grocery store millions in sales thanks, in part, to low foot traffic. Plus, we’re gearing up for our big 100th episode, which we’ll be taping on Hornblower Cruise’s Sights & Sips Cocktail Cruise June 22. And we want you there! With Andrew Knechel from Bucks County Brewery We took a trip out to Bucks County Brewery in Pipersivlle, PA on one of their popular Food Truck Fridays to talk with owner, brewer and Renaissance Man Andrew Knechel. Andrew talked about the brewery's beginnings, trying to keep up with the demand for his excellent beers, some of his favorite concoctions and various other interests, hobbies and distractions. Dan shared his joy (misplaced, in this editor’s opinion) over Taco Bell’s recent decision to serve alcohol, we played There’s Weird in My Beer in Happy Fun Time and Steph gave us the low down on English Mild Ales in Know Your Beers. After recording and sharing Andrew’s delicious brews, we stayed to enjoy the tunes of The Mike & Brian Project and tasty eats from Phoebe’s BBQ and Mr. D’s Nomadic Kitchen.

Josh Campbell, Storyteller of Spillit Memphis talks about his history and growth towards storytelling, Memphis cultural growth, Memphis history, and the unnecessary divide between East Memphis and Midtown. You'll also get to hear about his controversial view on This American Life *gasp*. Spillit is true, unscripted stories told in front of a live audience in Memphis, Tennessee. Spillit events are held quarterly and each event has a theme. Stories last ten minutes and must have a beginning, a middle, an end, and some sort of moral to tie it together. Some are hilarious, others contemplative, heartbreaking, suspenseful, and some reflective. Anyone can tell a story! Themes are announced months in advance. http://spillitmemphis.org/ Heroes June 13th - https://www.facebook.com/events/1415023002105651/?ref=5 Identity Crisis June 20th - https://www.facebook.com/events/232755043585305/?ref=5 Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Spillitmemphis Twitter - https://twitter.com/Spillitmemphis iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/spillit-memphis/id579081398?mt=2 Crosstown Arts - http://crosstownarts.org/ Ryan Azada - https://twitter.com/deathtoazula Leah Keys - https://twitter.com/leahtkeys Spillit 2013 successfully Kickstarted campaign - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/818341752/spillit-2013 To Submit stories for Spillit EMAIL HERE - spillitstories@gmail.com The Moth - http://themoth.org/ George Dawes Green - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Dawes_Green Spillit by Wendy Trenthem :You’ve Got Mail” - http://spillitmemphis.org/wp-content/mp3/spillit_06_episode_06.mp3 Josh Campbell, storyteller - https://www.facebook.com/joshcampbellstorytelling?ref=stream ...And Thar You Got Wax, A Drama Boy Encore. https://www.facebook.com/events/660198820718259/ Free Admission Saturday, July 19 at 7:00pm - 8:40pm Broad Ave Arts District - Water Pavillion Maria Montesorri Memphis - http://mariamontessorischool.org/ Maria Montesorri wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Montessori This American Life - http://www.thisamericanlife.org/ Nashville TV show - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nashville_%282012_TV_series%29 East Memphis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Memphis,_Memphis,_Tennessee Our headphones - http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR7506-Professional-Diaphragm-Headphone/dp/B000AJIF4E Hog and hominy - http://www.hogandhominy.com/ Second Line - http://www.secondlinememphis.com/ Restaurant Iris - http://www.restaurantiris.com/ Bari - http://www.barimemphis.com/web/ Hattilo Theater - http://www.hattiloo.org/ Texas de Brazil - http://www.texasdebrazil.com/location/memphis Memphis Culture (50+ Initiatives) - http://creativememphispodcast.com/episode001-nationlebowitz/ Metal Museum - http://www.metalmuseum.org/ Memphis College of Art - http://mca.edu/ Yolo - http://www.yolofroyo.com/ Tamp & Tap - http://tampandtap.com/ Chiwawa - http://chiwawamidtown.com/ http://www.minglewoodhall.com/ https://www.facebook.com/MinglewoodHall?fref=ts The Rainforest - http://www.therainforestbook.com/ http://www.amazon.com/The-Rainforest-Secret-Building-Silicon/dp/0615586724 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystone_species http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keystone_%28architecture%29 Hyphen Marketing - http://www.hyphenmarketsolutions.com/ Mayor’s Innovation Team - http://innovatememphis.com/ An American Plague - http://www.amazon.com/An-American-Plague-Terrifying-Epidemic/dp/0395776082 Ignite Memphis - http://ignitememphis.com/ Spillit @ Ignite - http://vimeo.com/82159553 Undercurrent - https://www.facebook.com/getundercurrent Emerge Memphis - http://www.emergememphis.org/ Forge - http://www.forgememphis.com/ Co-work - http://coworkmemphis.com/ Start Co. - http://neverstop.co/ Dixon Gallery - http://www.dixon.org/ Food Truck Fridays - http://www.dixon.org/food-truck-fridays Shelby Farms - http://www.shelbyfarmspark.org/ History - http://shelbyfarmspark.org/history Greenline - http://greatermemphisgreenline.com/
