Israel, the United States, and European leaders are all missing a unique opportunity in their policy stance and behavior toward the new post-Assad regime in Syria, veteran Middle East correspondent Gregg Carlstrom said on the Haaretz Podcast. Carlstrom, a journalist for The Economist currently based in Dubai, said that the leader of the Islamist faction that led the toppling of Bashar Assad’s regime has made it clear that he has no hostile intentions towards Israel. And yet, Israel has attacked hundreds of targets in the country, targeting weapons depots and air defense systems. Israel's decision to deploy troops on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights and seize control of a buffer zone between the two countries is, according to Carlstrom, worrying and alienating the Syrian population. "For Syrians, that looks like exploitation, not security," he explained. Also on the podcast, German journalist Vera Weidenbach discussed how the collapse of Assad’s regime has reignited debates about Syrian refugees in Europe. With asylum applications frozen in Germany, and with other countries considering similar steps, she said refugees face mounting uncertainty as “deeply polarizing” rhetoric intensifies. "You see the far-right dominating the discourse in Germany, celebrating Assad’s fall as a reason for refugees to ‘finally go home,’ creating a toxic atmosphere." On today's #NCFWhittle, we are joined once again by Prof. Frank Furedi of MCC Brussels. Prof. Furedi's new book is The War Against the Past: Why The West Must Fight For Its History (https://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Against-Past-Fight-History/dp/1509561250). "A war is being waged against the Past. Whether it's toppling statues, decolonising the curriculum or erasing terms from our vocabulary, a cultural crusade is underway designed to render the past toxic. It is condemned as enemy territory and has become the target of venomous hate. What is at stake in provoking such a strong sense of societal shame towards Western history? "In his book, Frank Furedi mounts a fierce defence of the past and calls for a fight back against the delegitimization of its ideals and accomplishments. Casting the past as a story of shame has become a taken-for granted outlook permeating the educational and cultural life of western society from the top down. Its advocates may see it as a cultural imperative, but a society that loses touch with its past will face a permanent crisis of identity. Squandering the wisdom provided by our historical inheritance means betraying humanity's positive achievements. Challenging this great betrayal, Furedi argues, is one of the most important battles of our time."
How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? — Proverbs 6:9 Years ago, when we lived in Taiwan, we awoke one morning to find a column of ants marching across our house, from one end to the other. Ants are truly amazing. They seem so driven, directed, and industrious. In fact, Proverbs describes them here as a model of organization and industry and as a spur against laziness. This passage does not suggest that we must always be busy or that rest is unimportant. For human beings, both rest and work together reveal our identity as imagebearers of Creator God. As such, we have an innate desire—even need—to create flourishing. What might that mean? Flourishing results from seeking to serve and honor God in all we do. In all our work, hobbies, rest, recreation, and more, we can nurture and be nurtured by life in this world God has made—whether we are cooks, programmers, builders, medical workers, gardeners, maintenance workers, artists, teachers, drivers, farmers, and more. But if we squander our time and talents, we deny who we are and waste opportunities to serve God and others. All of our daily work, at home and in the world, will not resemble ants marching in line. We are not ants. We are imagebearers of God, and the work and service we do will be creative and purposeful, punctuated by sabbath rest and refreshment, bringing glory to God and joy to creation. Lord, help us to use all of the gifts and talents you have given us to bring you glory and to bless others. Amen.

Nicole talks about the difference between creation and nervous activity and how hard it is to distinguish between the two. We also talk about procrastination, Elvis Costello, the need to let ideas simmer, collaborating on a show, making an album, the meaning of music, the tricks to productivity, and the joy of baby steps. Bio: For two decades, Nicole Atkins has created her own brand of spectral American rock & roll. She's an old-school torch singer for the modern world, funneling her award-winning songwriting chops and genre-spanning influences — including psychedelic rock, Muscle Shoals soul, the pop grandeur of Roy Orbison, and the dark drama of Nick Cave — into six albums that have earned a global audience. Regularly featured on year-end "best of" lists by Rolling Stone, NPR, and The New York Times, Atkins has collaborated with artists from across the musical spectrum, including David Byrne, Chris Isaak, Spoon, Elvis Costello, Tommy Stinson, and the Old 97's. The title track of her major-label debut album won The ASCAP Foundation Sammy Cahn Award, and her songs have appeared in prime-time TV shows like Dexter, national ad campaigns for American Express, and on the Billboard charts, with tracks like "Domino" becoming Top 40 AAA hits. A road warrior who has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Late Night With David Letterman, Atkins is also a professional illustrator and painter whose work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal and No Depression.

On the one hand, the Left is more radical and destructive than ever, placing us in greater existential crisis. But on the other hand, leftists are openly telling people they want scarcity and poverty. Whereas the old Left wanted to attain control by promising to give you everything, the new woke Left wants to control you by taking everything away from you. Today, I give you the economic data and messaging that a sane GOP would push, which would necessitate that Republicans divest from the green energy scam. Unfortunately, we can't have nice things. Why? Because we have allowed red states to be run by Republicans in name only. We are joined by Mississippi state Senator Chris McDaniel, who is running for lieutenant governor against a liberal incumbent. He lays out his vision for making Mississippi a true red state. Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker break down the Blue Jays' 3-0 loss to the Giants at Rogers Centre. They take your calls and get right to a no-show from the offence: 17 strikeouts from the Jays bats on a night where Kevin Gausman notched 12 Ks and one earned run over six innings of work. Is there a solution to shuffle the bats, or can it be chalked up to funky delivery from the Giants pitching staff? This past month, a milestone was passed that went largely un-noticed. China exported more goods in Remnimbi then in US dollars for the first time in modern history. This means that more and more countries are willing to do business with China. When you consider what it means to be financially responsible, a few things come to mind. You pay your bills You follow a set of well established rules You earn more than you spend Countries that don't follow these principles get punished internationally. You see their currencies fall in value. Countries that can't be trusted don't have the privilege of borrowing in the own currency. They must borrow against a financial standard that is going to be predictable. But when you are the world's reserve currency, you can get away with breaking a bunch of these rules without much consequence. The international community will give you a pass. ------------- Host: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com

There is evidence of discontent among the voters in CA. It comes from the growing disappointment with specific laws, regulations and policies passed by the California State legislature in recent years. The problem can be described as the Law of Unintended Consequences. Several Laws passed by the California legislature, created conditions that were not part of the sponsors' original intent. Most reasonable people can accept that logic. Every government administration has had this experience. But in California, we have a unique predicament. The super majority legislature who passed these laws, appears unwilling or unable to take action to correct the laws causing the unintended consequences. The rise in crime is just one specific, undeniable area. Join me the conversation with Liz Lawler, an CA Assembly District 28 candidate who has a common sense approach to addressing these consequences.
