Oren and I met at a UTA party last September and we had such a great conversation that I asked if he'd be on Blissful Spinster and I was delighted when he said yes! I have to admit my conversation with Oren is one of my favorites to date. His passion for the art of filmmaking is palpable and he is all at once introspective, humorous and articulate. He loves to share knowledge and is full of wonderful nuggets for filmmakers of any level. Beyond the joy of watching Oren succeed at what he loves, what brings me the most joy is knowing I can now call Oren a friend We had an Amazing chat and I'm so excited to bring you Part 1 of my conversation with Oren!** Just a couple of fun notes before we get going… this episode was recorded nearly a year ago, last October and you'll hear Oren and I refer to the film “The Creator” as it's former name “True Love”, also, this episode will be part 1, as Oren has graciously agreed to come back as a guest to record a bonus episode and talk about what he's been up to since our last chat and to talk a little bit more in depth on “The Creator” on the eve of the film's release.Oren's Bio:Oren recently shot the feature film ‘The Creator,' directed by Gareth Edwards, along with cinematographer Greig Fraser ASC ACS, slated for release on September 29, 2023. Meet Randall Park, the multi-talented artist who has captivated audiences with his comedic acting, writing, producing, and directing skills. Hailing from Los Angeles, Randall is not only known for his comedic prowess but has also ventured into the realms of producing and directing. His journey in the entertainment industry began during his time at UCLA, where he co-founded the LCC Theatre Company, which has since grown to become the largest Asian American college theater group in the country.I first discovered Randall's talent when a friend shared a link to the hilarious web series, IKEA Heights, from the Comedy 101 web series. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend checking it out at the link I left below! Since then, Randall has left his mark on various shows such as The Office and Veep before landing lead roles in Fresh Off The Boat and Blockbuster. His performances have also extended to both the Marvel and DC franchises, with his portrayal of FBI Agent Jimmy Woo in the WandaVision series generating a significant online campaign for a spin-off series centered around his character. One of Randall's most notable accomplishments, in my opinion, was his co-writing and co-starring role in Netflix's rom-com Always Be My Maybe alongside Ali Wong. His portrayal of the romantic lead showcased his nuanced and hilarious performance, solidifying his talent as both a writer and actor. In addition to his own success, Randall is also committed to amplifying Asian American and underrepresented voices in the industry. This dedication has led him to co-found Imminent Collision, a production company aimed at providing a platform for these voices. Together with his friends from the LCC Theatre Company, Randall is working towards creating meaningful opportunities for marginalized communities. Most recently, Randall ventured into directing with his debut feature film, Shortcomings, a subversive romantic comedy that played in competition at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film tells a relatable story about messy people who happen to be Asian American, providing a refreshing perspective to the genre. It was at Sundance that I had the incredible opportunity to meet Randall during a panel on directing your first feature film. I was thrilled when he agreed to share his directing journey with me on Blissful Spinster, and our conversation was filled with open dialogue, insightful advice, and inspiring anecdotes. I'm so excited to bring you my conversation with Randall! I was blown away by Richard Pasquarelli's solo exhibition, As It Should Be at BravinLee Programs. The show is up until May 14, 2022. GO SEE IT! 526 West 26th Street #211 NYC 10001 212-462-4404 info@bravinlee.com Hours: Wednesday-Saturday 12-5 Richard Pasquarelli is a New York based artist whose paintings study the psychological relationships between our minds and the physical world. He has what he refers to as Organizational OCD. This condition was originally pointed out to him around 10 years ago by his then teen-aged sons after a long period of watching their dad continuously straighten out everything around the house, including their casually placed backpacks. It was a bit of a wake up call for Richard and he went into a deep dive researching his condition, including attending a professional conference on hoarding and visiting hoarders' homes, immersing himself in their environment and personal stories. RIchard Pasquarelli's journey is a great example of how art is healing. Not only did Richard's experience inspire a plethora of new work for him, it helped him understand humanity and himself a whole lot better. I was fascinated and filled with questions as Richard parsed his feelings and experiences about himself, his perfectionism, and what he's learned about himself from connecting with hoarders who are the exact opposite of him. And of course how all of this has manifested in his work. Plus loads of laughing. Richard is a fun guy who's not afraid of who he is. Richard describes his understanding about his work: My paintings study the physical manifestation of psychological states of mind. Through analysis of my own compulsions for perfection and order, and research into mental health, psychology, the physical properties of nature, and philosophy, I seek a better understanding of the connections between mind and matter. To build upon my research, I have immersed myself into the study of OCD and hoarding disorder by conducting field research in the homes of people affected by these conditions. The knowledge gained through my interviews and the thousands of photographs I take during my visits have become integral parts of my process. By creating artworks based on these spaces, I have come to perceive our physical surroundings as a manifestation of the psyche. My paintings are more than representations of people's possessions, they are portraits of their minds. RIchard's Website HERE. Richard's Instagram HERE.

Lianne Keemink (The Self Help Hipster) and Andrew Chin discuss self-help books, talk about their obsessions and their pop culture pleasures. BOOK OF THE MONTH Andrew and I discuss Atomic Habits, the book by James Clear ----more---- You can buy the paperback here* for 16.99 and you can buy the Kindle version off of Amazon for 12.00$!* James Clear is an American journalist, photographer and self-help blogger. For me he falls into the same category as Leo Babauta, James Altucher and Mark Manson: all big self help bloggers who came up around the same time, talking about self-development. James Clear has really narrowed down his topic to Habit Change, and the book 'Atomic Habits' is an amalgamation of everything he's ever read and everything he's ever written on the topic. Andrew and I really like the book, it touches upon some of the most important topics in habit changing, such as: It is about small changes! Getting little bits better, one-percenting (getting 1% better each day) as we coined the term in this podcast. Identity and the way you look at yourself matters, but it's a way to get yourself into the door - not a way to completely change your life in and of itself. We get into an interesting discussion about it! If you have systems in place, it is so much easier to do things, aka create new habits. Systems can be a step 1, step 2, step 3, but als other like getting an accountability partner, making the first 5 minutes of something super easy or habit-stacking. It's about progress, not perfection Andrew said: "Find the thing you want to identify with, and then prove it to yourself." Longevity and long term commitment are important. For anything, for success, for actual change, and therefore also for habits. "Just enough victories to keep you motivated, enough mistakes to keep working hard." OBSESSIONS Lianne: My dishwasher and making air horn sounds. Oh and Poolside.fm! It is SO FUN to me for some reason. I listen to it for bits and pieces here and there because it just makes me chuckle. Andrew: His Alexander McQueen double white sneakers POP CULTURE PLEASURES (Mostly Lianne, because at this point I'm 50% pop culture) Blade Runner 2049: I watched it with Vin on Netflix and it is STUNNING. Put away your phone one evening, get some snacks and go watch it. It is awe-inspiring. GLOW: Such. A. Good. Show. Also on Netflix. Andrew asked me what I thought about 902010 (no opinion but my friend Susannah hated it) and Hobbs and Shaw: I gushed for 5 minutes. GO SEE IT! Next book: Art Matters by Neil Gaiman! Other News: As mentioned in the Podcast, we're bringing the 30 Day Challenge BACK!
Hello, FINALLY! The last two weeks have been so busy but I am BACK with an episode on the beautiful (haha) Carole King! I saw "Beautiful: The Musical" on Broadway with two of my students two weeks ago starring Vanessa Carlton. I was very thrilled to see that Vanessa Carlton can act as well! She is so talented. I thought since there are probably a lot of people that can't afford to see Broadway shows all the time or even just for people that are too far away that MAYBE an episode like this would help! Sadly, they announced YESTERDAY that "Beautiful" will be closing on October 27th, 2019! So, if you are in the NYC area before then I really recommend you see this. It is such an amazing story of a kind, hopeful, driven, and talented woman and all the cool people in her life. I was very touched by the whole experience. GO SEE IT! In this episode I discuss the performance as well as Carole King's background and history. It is brief so if you want to know way more I recommend you watch her discussion at the JFK Library on YouTube or read/listen to her memoir: "Natural Woman." I have have a recording slipped into the middle of us at intermission talking about what happened thus far. Hope you have a beautiful day! :) K
Greta gives 'Booksmart' four out of four Gretas, a new rating system we've devised specifically for this wonderful new movie. Why's it so good? Well, it’s smart, funny, a little raunchy, and it embraces so many gorgeous, gut-wrenching elements of what it means to be a smart, funny teenage girl. This week on Nerdette, we talk with the wonderful Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein (the stars of the film) about the movie's themes: Friendship, growing older, sexuality, feminism, and dealing with high expectations. Bottom line: GO SEE IT.

Episode 19 of More Than A Whelan breaks new ground as for the first time we have not one, but two short radio plays created exclusively for the podcast inspired by our listener creative prompts with special guest scriptwriter, poet, Mileta Rien. Sean begins the show reading the song lyrics to the only song he's ever written called Chewing Gum & Wine. Chewing and Wine. From your dress to the floor From the bottle to the door You never asked for much Except ‘don’t be poor’ Which I was And I am. You put donuts in the salad Then I told you I had had it But by the end of a moderately priced Shiraz We were fucking like rabbits. Chewing gum and wine Chewing gum and wine That was our tale. Separately spectacular But together doomed to fail I went to a Steiner school You thought that was really cool You said that you home studied And learnt Shakespeare in the pool Which is also cool Like really Chewing gum and wine Chewing gum and wine That was our tale. Separately spectacular But together doomed to fail You liked wearing pleather In all kinds of weather. In the winter that was clever But the summer was not so kind. Chewing gum and wine Chewing gum and wine It just can’t work together. But don’t worry baby. You’ll be fine You’ll be fine. You’ll be finnnnnnnne.* A CHAT WITH SCREENWRITER MILETA RIEN Sean has a chat with Mileta about her path to becoming a writer and subsequently a screenwriter. Mileta and Sean read a radioplay called Green Sea Glass, written by Mileta based upon a creative prompt by Penny Waller Ulmer. The prompt being about a true story left by Penny about collecting sea glass on a beach with her father as a child and then many years later travelling on the same beach and seeing the same green sea glass on the beach. Thank you Penny! Sean, Mileta and MTAW producer and head honcho of Castaway Studios, Derek Myers are the cast for Sean's radio play inspired by three creative prompts by Penny Waller Ulmer. Those three prompts are... If your thoughts think you. A clogged wishing well. Red chinese wedding umbrellas. Thank you so much Penny for all the inspo! You are definitely our muse of the week! Mileta then tells MTAW all about her new web series 'Keep Me in Mind'. They also discuss the success of TV shows that started out life as web series such as http://thekateringshow.com/ and High Maintenance. WHELAN & STEALIN' Mileta reads a passage from the book 'Last Chance to See' by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine. Sean reads some nihilist dad jokes from McSweeneys. WORLD OF WHELAN. In Episode 7, Luke Skywalker has disappeared and the First Order has risen out of the dust of the Galactic Empire. What’s that? This isn’t Star Wars? This is Dude, Did You Hear? Oh, ok. In this episode, we discover we may be in a simulation, one made by crazy intelligent beings. A simulation with SWORD WATCH 2017 PT II! A simulated world where kids are finding WWII planes in their backyards and lawyers pants are literally on fire. Plus the dudes dive into Logan and Kong: Skull Island (and their opinions) to prepare you for your weekend at the movies. Dave and Andy are drinking Sapporo and Pacifico (in cans!). ——————————————————————————————————— Dude, Did Your Hear? The ancient Persians debated things twice. Once while sober. Once while drunk. Debate class must have been a riot. It wasn’t money burning a whole in this lawyer’s pockets. His pants caught on fire during an arson trial, giving new meaning to “liar, liar, pants on fire.” Neil De Grasse Tyson thinks it’s a coin flip for whether we’re currently living in a computer simulation. Upon further review, Andy and Dave decide to take the blue pill. They just don’t want to be hassled. The Vikings stadium is killing a record number of birds. Not the Falcons, Eagles, or the Cardinals. Birds that don’t know the difference between 4-3, 3-4, and large structures impeding their flight path. The Return of Sword Watch 2017! Plus a LINK! A kid overachieves on his WWII history report. By a lot. (Bullwhip, Leather Jacket, and Fedora not included) Dave and Andy debate Kong: Skull Island – Dave can’t switch his brain off, Andy can. Somebody liked it, you’ll never guess who. Logan is an action movie masterpiece. GO SEE IT. RIGHT NOW! But leave the kids and faint-hearted friends at home. Seriously, you better be reading this in line at the theater. We Recommend: Drinking coffee black and gives tips on how to get there. Like a bowel movement, Andy and Dave enjoy their coffee dark, smooth, and oily. Bringing a book. Unless you can’t read. It’s good for your brain... And society. We Don’t Recommend: Having no real relationships. Dune? Don’t. Patrick Stewart has a weird mullet, Sting is gyrating in a loincloth and, unless you studied, you won’t make it through the first act. Dave also doesn’t recommend selfies. Or killfies. Or people who use the word killfie.
