Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has been in office for just over a month. During this time significant economic and policy shifts have been executed such as the scrapping of petrol subsidies and firing Godwin Emefiele as Central Bank Governor. Business Day TV assessed Tinubu's first month in office with Pieter Scribante, Political Economist at Oxford Economics Africa.

We question narratives and schools of thought, and try to form new understanding. Each episode we use current events to question mainstream and bitcoin narratives across the globe, with an emphasis on central banks and currencies. Find all charts and links at bitcoinandmarkets.com/fed149 In this episode, Nolan and I discuss all the big news items of the week having to do with central banks and bitcoin. We start by talking about Bitcoin ETFs and the tidal wave of filings, we bring Producer Chris in to give his perspective as well, what it means for bitcoin. Next, we watch a couple Jerome Powell clips from his testimony in front of Congress, specifically his comments on "crypto" and CBDCs. At the end of the show, we discuss the collapse of the Chinese yuan (CNY) and what it can tell us about the state of, not only the Chinese economy, but also the global economy. In our Bitcoin ETF discussion, we hit on the curious timing of the Blackrock filing in relation to the SEC action against Coinbase and Binance, we speculate on the timing of any approval, its likelihood, and the whole Blackrock versus Grayscale debate. The CBDC discussion is an interesting one. Federal Reserve Chairman Powell was testifying in front of Congress and said very bluntly, they are not pursuing a retail CBDC. He did say, if they were to pursue a CBDC, which they are not at this time, it would be a wholesale type CBDC. The IMF managing director Kristalina Georgievahe came out the same day saying, the IMF is still, "working hard on the concept of a global CBDC platform," conflicting with earlier statements only a couple months ago said, "we think that wholesale CBDCs can be put in place with fairly little space for undesirable surprises, whereas retail CBDCs completely transform the financial system in a way that we don't quite know what consequences it could bring." Next, on the CBDC front, we cover the arrest of Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, the designer behind the country's war on cash and disastrous CBDC rollout. We end the episode by looking into the Chinese yuan and discuss what we can learn about the current state of the global economy and what a failing China means going forward. Thanks for joining us! The House of Representatives Adhoc Committee on the redesign of three naira notes has rejected the 10 days extension granted by the Central Bank of Nigeria for the swap of old N200, N500, and N1,000 bank notes. The Chairman of the Committee and the Majority Leader of the House, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, said the green chamber will proceed and sign an arrest warrant to compel the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele to appear before the committee. He says the new naira redesign policy is capable of frustrating the forthcoming 2023 general elections. He described the extension as a mere political gimmick to further deceive Nigerians and worsen their economic and social livelihood, insisting that the CBN governor must appear before or stand the risk of being arrested on the strength of legislative writs signed earlier by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4090160/advertisement

The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele survived an arrest by the SSS. President Muhammadu Buhari left a cheering message for Nigerians in his last new year message. Catch up o all the important news that occurred in the past week.
The Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele has found himself in heavy demand from Nigeria's secret police service leading to an obvious question as to who's after him. The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has declined an application by the Department of State Services to arrest and detain the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele. Justice Tsoho, while declining the motion ex-parte filed by an applicant in the absence of the respondent, says the secret police did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate its claims that Emefiele was involved in terrorism financing and economic crimes. The Judge noted that the name of the respondent was given simply as ‘Godwin Emefiele' without a material disclosure that he is the same person as the CBN Governor.
Nigerian Lawmakers insisted that the Central Bank of Nigeria must not proceed with its cash withdrawal policy. Although the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for the second time, failed to appear before the House, the lawmakers said their December 8 directive to the apex bank to put the policy on hold had not changed. The CBN indicated that beginning from January 9, 2023, the amounts individuals and corporate organisations could withdraw per week would not exceed N100,000 and N500,000, respectively. The Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, CBN, Edward Adamu, told the lawmakers that Emefiele was part of the entourage of President Muhammadu Buhari on an official trip to the United States.
The newly redesigned naira notes will go into circulation with Deposit Money Banks releasing the bills to their customers via over-the-counter payments. The President unveiled the redesigned notes across the N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, had in October announced that apex bank would release re-designed naira notes by December 15, 2022. He also disclosed that the old notes would cease to be regarded as legal tender by January 31, 2023. Emefiele pointed out that the redesigning of the naira notes would help to curb counterfeit notes and reduce ransom payments to terrorists and kidnappers.
Political parties have kicked against the new cash withdrawal limits introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria, stating that it could choke the political process. Parties including the Peoples Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, Africa Democratic Congress and African Democratic Party contended that the policy would affect the fundraising required by the candidates to sustain their campaigns ahead of the 2023 elections. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State had accused the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, of targeting the political class with the new cash withdrawal limit which restricts over-the-counter cash withdrawal by individuals and companies to N100,000 and N500,000, respectively, per week. The CBN's Director of Banking Supervision, Haruna Mustafa, says withdrawals above the thresholds would attract processing fees of five per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, for individuals and corporate entities going forward.

The House of Representatives has criticized the new policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria which, among others, sets limits to cash withdrawals at Deposit Money Banks and other financial institutions. The House summoned the Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, to come and explain the policy to the parliament. This is based on a motion of urgent public importance moved by a member of the House, Aliyu Magaji, at the plenary on Thursday. Several lawmakers warned that the policy would have serious consequences and adverse effects on businesses and Nigerians who have no access to the banking system.
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, faulted the recent endorsement of the naira redesign by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying the policy may be declared illegal in court. The Central Bank of Nigeria earlier said it will redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes to take control of the currency in circulation. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said she wasn't consulted by the apex bank on the initiative, Buhari backed the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, saying he is fully in support of the policy. Falana, says the President is expected to present a money bill to the National Assembly for approval before the actualisation of the policy.
President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled the re-designed Naira Notes as proposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele debunked insinuations suggesting that the early unveiling of the new notes is a means to target some Nigerians. Mr. Emefiele appealed to members of the public, urging them to desist from making such speculation, adding that there is no need to perpetuate any such information. He says the CBN will intensify the monitoring process and interrogate the process of withdrawals. The president appealed to Nigerians and urged them to embrace the new policy to re-design the naira.
The Central Bank Of Nigeria is not going back on its decision to withdraw, redesign and reissue the higher denominations of naira banknotes despite a welter of opposition that has greeted the policy move. Last week Wednesday, the CBN announced that it has secured President Muhammadu Buhari's approval to redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 paper currencies and that the new notes would be in circulation effective December 15, 2022. Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor, who made the announcement, noted that the decision, which is in line with sections 19, subsections a and b of the CBN Act 2007, was taken in order to control the currency in circulation, curb counterfeit notes, and check ransom payment to terrorists and kidnappers.
The International Monetary Fund has advised Nigeria to be careful in its plan to redesign and replace the naira. The Central Bank of Nigeria says the move will help the bank fight money laundering and insecurity. The governor of the bank, Godwin Emefiele, says the plan would allow the bank to mop up N2.73 trillion out of the N3.23 trillion currency in circulation that is outside the vaults of commercial banks. A former deputy governor of the CBN, Kingsley Moghalu, says the duration allowed by the bank is short and could create huge operational pressure on banks and some traders may prematurely reject the existing currency notes once the new ones come into circulation.
The Central Bank of Nigeria says it will redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes. CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this during a special press briefing in Abuja. The new design and issues will be effective from December 15, 2022. The CBN boss says the action was taken in order to take control of the currency in circulation, Emefiele stated that the apex bank has secured the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari to roll out new notes to replace the existing currency in circulation.

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria has voted unanimously to raise the Monetary Policy Rate to 13 per cent. CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, says the sharp rise in inflation across both the advanced and emerging market economies has generated growing concerns among central banks as the progressive rise in inflation driven by rising aggregate demands and wage growth has put sustainable pressure on price levels. He says consequently, the major central banks such as the U.S. Fed, the Bank of England, European Central Bank, and Bank of Canada have provided strong guidance of a progressive shift away from monetary policy accommodation to drive market interest rate which may ultimately impact capital flows away from emerging market economies.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele's request to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami preventing him from his Presidential Ambition. The CBN Governor through his Counsel, Mike Ozekhome, told the court that Section 84 ((12) of the Electoral Act as amended, 2022 does not affect him, being a public servant and not a political appointee. The Judge also ordered the defendants to appear before him on May 12 to show cause why the CBN Governor's request should not be granted.
Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, defended the apex bank's managed-float exchange rate system, stressing that it was adopted to address the peculiar challenges the country faces. Emefiele reiterated that he was focused on his job and remains committed to supporting the fiscal authorities in ensuring that the country surpasses the 3.4 per cent Gross Domestic Product for 2022, which had been predicted for Nigeria by the International Monetary Fund. The CBN Governor stressed that different countries have different challenges and must develop solutions that would help address their challenges.
President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the $2.5 billion Dangote fertiliser plant yesterday in Lagos, with an assurance that the country was poised to end its massive dependence on imported agricultural products soon. Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, stressed that the fertiliser plant was well-timed considering recent developments on the global scene. The president declared that the plant would further advance his administration's drive towards self-sufficiency in food production in the country. He says the country also stands to gain extensively in foreign exchange earnings from the fertiliser factory.
The Central Bank of Nigeria has projected that the Nigerian economy will grow by 3.24 per cent in 2022, in spite of rising inflationary challenges occasioned by global socio-economic events. Mr Godwin Emefiele, the CBN Governor, says the International Monetary Fund also projected the economy to grow at 2.7 per cent, while the Federal Government projected a 4.21 per cent growth. Emefiele, however, says the MPC was concerned about the impact the global increase in petroleum and other products was having on the Nigerian economy. He urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to take urgent steps to ensure adequate supply of petroleum products.
Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, says agriculture remains a strong pillar and saving grace for the Nigerian economy. Emefiele expressed satisfaction with the level of interest shown in agriculture and the tremendous impact the sector had had in the last six years. He wondered how the country could have coped with the rising prices of food and commodity items across the world without the foresight to revamp agriculture. Emefiele says the apex bank had come up with several initiatives aimed towards repositioning the sector with a view to creating employment opportunities as well as growing the Gross Domestic Product.
The Central Bank of Nigeria kicked against plans by the Senate to enact a new anti-money laundering law. The apex bank put forward this position during a public hearing by a Senate Joint Committee – anti-corruption, financial crimes, judiciary and human rights – on three different anti-corruption bills. The CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, says an amendment of the existing Money Laundering Prevention Act 2011 will better serve the interest of Nigerians than repeal and re-enactment.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has predicted a 10 per cent increase in credit to the agricultural sector over the next two years. He says about $2 billion out of about $2.5 billion had been disbursed to over three million farmers cultivating over 4.7 million hectares of arable land in the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory under the Anchors Borrowers' Programme. He noted that over 80 per cent of the fund was targeted at the agricultural sector.
The Central Bank of Nigeria has revealed that it would stop the sale of foreign exchange to banks by the end of the year. CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, says the banks must begin to source their forex from export proceeds. Emefiele says the decision is in line with the CBN's new commitment to boost the country's foreign reserves through proceeds from non-oil exports. He says Nigeria cannot continue to depend on FX earnings to fund its import obligations from revenue coming from earnings from products where we cannot determine both price and quantity.
