One caller describes in thorough detail these peculiar white, unmarked busses that were "escorted" in towards the Capitol. They weren't full of police or security, so who was actually in them? Then, Howie wagers if the N15 protestors will get treated like the J6 protestors. Fat chance. And, speaking of fat, tune in for your daily dose of Chris Christie jokes and the rest of the Chump Line.

In this episode, the question of why we should read American literature today is asked and answered by Sarah Wages. She will use different novels to prove her point, but specifically talking about Willa Cather's My Ántonia. She will then introduce the Bechdel Test to American Literature, seeing what does and does not pass the test. There seems to be total confusion among motorists as to who has the right of way as two lanes merge into one on the Bundoran Road in Sligo, heading out the N15 road. Cllr Donal Gilroy has moved to clarify the confusion, after raising the dangers of the bottleneck at yesterday's meeting of Sligo County Council

Location: Yeat's Grave, Drumcliffe Yeats's grave is marked in front of you with Ben Bulben visible through the cemetery trees. If the church is open, ensure you pay it a visit. If the excellent booklet by Derick Bingham entitled 'The Eye of the Heart' is still in print, it's well worth a read. The resting place of Ireland's greatest poet, William Butler Yeats, is as near perfect a location as you'd expect for such an evocative wordsmith. In the final two stanzas of Under Ben Bulben, Yeats declared: - Irish poets, learn your trade, Sing whatever is well made, Scorn the sort now growing up All out of shape from toe to top, Their unremembering hearts and heads Base-born products of base beds. Sing the peasantry, and then Hard-riding country gentlemen, The holiness of monks, and after Porter-drinkers' randy laughter; Sing the lords and ladies gay That were beaten into clay Through seven heroic centuries; Cast your mind on other days That we in coming days may be Still the indomitable Irishry. Under bare Ben Bulben's head In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid. An ancestor was rector there Long years ago, a church stands near, By the road an ancient cross. No marble, no conventional phrase; On limestone quarried near the spot By his command these words are cut: Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by! DIRECTIONS: We'll be turning left on to the N15 coming out of the car park and heading towards Rosses' Point via Rathcormack village.
Lissadell House GPS Location: 54.344031, -8.57777 Please note that Lissadell House has a limited opening season. Best to check the Lissadell website when planning your visit closer to the time. One of the great coups for Lissadell is getting Leonard Cohen to play here in 2010. Thw riter was lucky enough to see the show and it was magnificent hearing him sing - and also quote Yeats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5vYpWCbHsE Lissadell is famous as the childhood home of Constance Markievicz, one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising; the first woman to be elected to Dáil Eireann, where she served as Minister for Labour, and also the first woman to be elected to Westminster Parliament in London. Her brother Josslyn created at Lissadell one of the premier horticultural estates in Europe. Yeats was friendly with the Gore Booths, and has immortalised Lissadell in his poetry. In Memory Of Eva Gore-Booth And Con Markiewicz The light of evening, Lissadell, Great windows open to the south, Two girls in silk kimonos, both Beautiful, one a gazelle. But a raving autumn shears Blossom from the summer's wreath; The older is condemned to death, Pardoned, drags out lonely years Conspiring among the ignorant. I know not what the younger dreams – Some vague Utopia – and she seems, When withered old and skeleton-gaunt, An image of such politics. Many a time I think to seek One or the other out and speak Of that old Georgian mansion, mix Pictures of the mind, recall That table and the talk of youth, Two girls in silk kimonos, both Beautiful, one a gazelle. Dear shadows, now you know it all, All the folly of a fight With a common wrong or right. The innocent and the beautiful Have no enemy but time; Arise and bid me strike a match And strike another till time catch; Should the conflagration climb, Run till all the sages know. We the great gazebo built, They convicted us of guilt; Bid me strike a match and blow. DIRECTIONS: After here, you'll be making your way back to Drumcliffe on the N15. By the shores of Glencar lake GPS Location: 54.33762, -8.404841 One of the many tranquil spots along the lake where the scenery is worth stopping for. In our audio piece, we move onto Irish mythology as under Ben Bulben is where the Fianna warriors hunted and where we tell you the story of Diarmaid and Grainne. However, the good people are never too far away in these parts. Yeats wrote A Faery Song where the two worlds meet where the sleeping lovers get the blessing of the area's oldest residents. A Faery Song (sung by the people of Faery over Diarmaid and Grainne, in their bridal sleep under a cromlech) Better still, sung next by The Waterboys if listening on the Yeats Country Guide playlist on Spotify. We who are old, old and gay, O so old! Thousands of years, thousands of years, If all were told: Give to these children, new from the world, Silence and love; And the long dew-dropping hours of the night, And the stars above: Give to these children, new from the world, Rest far from men. Is anything better, anything better? Tell us it then: Us who are old, old and gay, O so old! Thousands of years, thousands of years, If all were told. As they were on the run from her husband Fionn McCumhaill, Diarmaid and Grainne (Diarmuid and Grania) are said to have spent the night in the shelter of a cave in Benbulben, known as Diarmaid and Grainne's Bed. DIRECTIONS: we'll be guiding you along Ben Bulben on your right until you get back to the N15 main road. Take a left here, but please note just before Drumcliffe, take the signs for Lissadell House on the right. if in a hurry, skip this step, but ensure you hear the lively Yeats debate! When Todd's daughter, Sofia, told him she wanted to write about autism for her end-of-year middle school research paper, Todd was both excited and anxious. Both the anxiety and excitement came from wondering what parts of her life experience with autism she incorporated into herself. The connective conversation that took place and became s2. E5. N15. of the Otherness Podcast titled Like Father Like Daughter. A Family Discussion About Autism. The tables of the Otherness Podcast are turned as Todd is interviewed by his daughter, Sofia. She asks intuitive questions about how Todd understands challenges hospitals have with engaging families affected by autism, the changing landscape from finding a “cure” for autism towards community and cultural support, and what she was surprised to learn in her research about how autism is actually a part of all of us. “Embracing autism is embracing the human condition”Like many of us, Todd has understood it is hard to “leave your work at the office”, especially when you spend it with families facing all of the challenges of autism as he does. He realized that his daughter, Sofia, was incorporating some of the spoken and unspoken lessons she learned about autism into her own ideas and questions. This led her to write a research paper on autism for a middle school project and was able to explore what we know and don't know about autism. “I never thought of it as weird, it was just who my uncle was.”Todd has always wanted Sofia to form her own voice, which she did. While some of her views overlap with her father, some do not. Their discussion helped Todd realize that the children watching us try to “figure out autism” are actually growing up in an environment where they actually experience autism with those around them. Sofia not only learned about autism from growing up with her Uncle Jay, but saw communities embracing those with special needs. This brings normalcy to relationships grown in autism. She never viewed Jay as anything but her uncle and describes how she can relate to some of his autism traits for herself as we all need tools to cope that may involve repetition and order. They also discuss caring for people with autism in schools, hospitals, and therapy sessions while reflecting on what Jay experienced and what they have seen around them today.s2. E5. Today I am sitting down with the incredible Kat Armas. Kat is a Cuban-American author and podcaster who is passionate about elevating the voices of women of color, asking big questions and wrestling with American culture to have a more clear view of God and how He makes Himself known through people and their experiences. She invites readers into the wrestle of our ideas about wisdom, or ideas we have developed about what makes someone a “theologian,” and perhaps how we limit who is influential in our faith development in beautiful book Abuelita Faith: What Women on the Margins Teach Us About Wisdom, Persistence and Strength. After being raised in Miami, Florida, surrounded by Cuban culture, and then moving to predominantly white evangelical world in seminary, Kat struggled to find her footing as a woman in male-dominated space, and as a woman of color, raised by women, and called by God to use her gifts for His glory. We'll talk about things like: What do you do when your life doesn't pan out into what may be described as a typical “American” family or faith? How do you really wrestle with the Christianity that has been passed down to you when that's its history? We'll define some buzzword terms and try to take the sting out of them that can keep us from actually having productive conversations about them like patriarchal vs. matriarchal society, a colonized Jesus vs. Jesus in the context of the Bible. Decolonizing, Deconstruction, etc. We're going deep, friends. This is an opportunity for you to sit at a table where you may not be the most comfortable, but where there is such beauty to behold, things to learn about a culture unique from your own, and a fuller picture of how God makes Himself known in other communities in the world, and how He may have something to share specifically with you about who YOU were uniquely made to be in our homes, in our faith families and the body of Christ as a whole. Reading Kat's book, and spending time with her has really stretched me. One thing that encourages me so much is that God is there in the midst of our complicated and messy stories of being a human. Jesus meets ALL of us exactly where we are, Living in the middle place, where so much of what we have known and seen, where we're from, and being willing to process a more robust view of God, and seeing Him through the eyes of our friends and neighbors in scripture has just made God all the more powerful, merciful and beautiful to me. It makes the call to go and share the Gospel with ALL nations so much more powerful and dare I say possible? When we are willing to learn about what life may look like for various nations, tribes, tongues and cultures unique from mine, then there is compassion to come together as we are, where we are, and there we can talk about Jesus. There, we can see how much all our stories matter. Your story matters, friend. You matter. I am not a” throw the baby out with the bathwater” person. I think this was a really unfortunate moment in JM's ministry. The Lord can use anything for good, and I've seen Him do it. What happened that day through his comments is still hurtful on so many levels to me personally and so many women that I know and love in this ministry life, and had truly astounding ripple effects I am still feeling in my own life and faith community. I left it as part of the conversation with Kat because I think it's important to hear the hurts of people, but I also don't mean to leave it in there to act as a “cancelling” of someone who I do believe is passionate about God's Word, he's just also human, and God is God in his life, and is still bringing the work in him to completion. Additionally, I don't know who Kat's hermeneutics professor was that said what he said to her, but I pray the Lord meets him and shows him the gift that the daughters of Eve offer to the Kingdom of God no matter where God leads them and regardless of their marital status. We're all being stretched. Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father and says “I will complete the work I began in them.” Further up, and further in.-xo, Em *UPDATED NEWS ON THE CUBAN CRISIS AND WAYS TO SUPPORT CUBAN PEOPLE DIRECTLY: -Monday the 15th- there was a worldwide march for Cuban freedom.-N15 // NBC's aritcle-- You can also see a lot more current updates from the instagram accounts and Twitter accounts posted below. Up to 40 minute traffic delays are being caused by ongoing works on the N15 road at Drumcliffe, which has caused frustration for motorists, particularly during rush hour times. Margaret says she can't understand why authorities didn't proceed with a new road plan for the area which was drawn up some years ago, which she feels would have prevented these regular hold-ups on the road

There have been calls for clarification on which motorists have the right of way as lanes heading northwards on Sligo's Bundoran Road converge. A group of residents in the Grange area staged a demonstration at a road junction at Aughagad last evening, to protest at its proposed closure by Sligo County Council. Campaigners say they will resist the closure of the junction onto the main N15 road in any way they can, and reject the road safety audit carried out of the junction
Grange resident, Brendan Devins, says the last time there was no consultation with locals in relation to land was during the Black and Tan era. He's one of the residents objecting to the closure of a junction coming out of lay-by onto the N15 road, while Sligo Co Co have been explaining why they've taken the decision

The week after the incredibly successful Thameside Radio third birthday party in Chiswick. Bob isn’t there for the start of the show so Dave takes the reins, with a just few technical hitches. Alex and Sarah fill in with an early and extended news section. John Lennon had been shot in the preceding week so Alex does a tribute to him before Bob finally gets to the studio. The lonely hearts club is going strong with a request for box number 69c since a and b have already gone. We hear Rossmore Road by Barry Andrews - yaay! Although the tape runs out at the end of the Bob Edwards show you might remember that the broadcast finished unexpectedly during the Intrepid Birdman Show because the Thameside Radio transmitter in Trellick Tower was raided by the DTI.
