Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke T.D. has announced the successful applicants to the latest round of the Capital Equipment Call, administered by Enterprise Ireland (EI) through the Technology Gateway and EI/IDA Technology Centre Programmes. Ten successful projects from across the third-level sector have secured €12.1m in funding to improve the capabilities of the existing Technology Gateways and EI/IDA Technology Centres by investing at a scale that allows them to bridge the gap between their existing capabilities and the state of the art. With individual awards of up to €2 million available the equipment funded through this Call will become an engine of economic development for local companies, in particular Small and Medium Enterprises who could not afford to invest at this scale. The new equipment will particularly help companies develop new products and services in areas focusing on Sustainability and Manufacturing Productivity. Since 2019, the Capital Equipment Fund administered by Enterprise Ireland has funded over 200 equipment purchases with a total value of €55 million. Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke TD said: "I am delighted to announce that my Department, through Enterprise Ireland, is providing over €12.1 million to fund state of the art equipment for our Technology Gateways and Technology Centres. Innovation is essential for all companies to adapt and deliver novel products and services, making them more competitive in their respective markets. This funding will further add to our system of supports to our enterprise sector, with the new equipment being an important tool for companies on their growth and innovation journey. This announcement builds on my Department's ongoing investment in equipping our research and innovation system, bringing our total funding to €55 million. It will allow our research network to continue to provide cutting edge support to Irish enterprise across all sectors and all regions in Ireland, providing more quality jobs along the way." Marina Donohoe, Divisional Manager, Research & Innovation at Enterprise Ireland said: "The scale of this investment will have an extremely positive impact on companies in Ireland, in particular the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The cost of the equipment funded here is prohibitive to most SMEs so the provision of it in the Technology Gateways and Technology Centres means companies will have access to leading edge facilities that will in turn help to improve their technical capabilities and deliver world leading products and services. With an emphasis on sustainability, the new equipment will provide Irish companies with the means to dramatically improve their competitiveness whilst also positively contributing to Ireland's action on Climate Change." Highlights from the Show Festus started working about 3 years ago on the issue of people in Africa having enough financial protection for retirement or to protect their families, and penetration rates of traditional life insurance products are very low Africa has seen the adoption of mobile payments, even on feature phones instead of smart phones, but that's largely not moved into financial services spending so much as general consumption All of this lead him to co-found Figtech, which is a platform to manage your insurance protection Life insurance is sold by individuals in Africa, but these agents don't tend to stand behind or support the policies after they're sold, so consumers struggle with basic things like updating their address (which requires going to the insurance company's office to change it in person) There are changes needed in the insurance market and regulation of it to see more penetration of insurance Some regulators have been creating more flexible paths for startups and new players to enter the market and grow For example, creating digital distribution licenses They've also allowed for creation of microinsurance that comes along with or is embedded into other products, like insurance you get when you buy more airtime minutes for your mobile phone Figtech was part of the first regulator-organized startup competition three years ago, and that experience helped spark Festus to push to create an insurtech community in Ghana, starting InsurTech Ghana They've been working with other InsurTech communities around the world, and started the first ever InsurTech Ghana conference in 2023, which they're holding again this year Africa is where a lot of new ideas of coverage and ways to protect people are being developed, and we would be smart to foster and watch what's happening there as a source of possible future product innovation ideas for the global insurance market This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. One of the biggest hurdles the private sector has had to deal with is access to finance. Large firms tend to benefit more from bank financing than SMEs do, as their track record and scale reduce their risk profile. Smaller, newer companies and those in the informal sector often face higher borrowing costs, if they are able to borrow at all.  Damalie Ssali, the Programs Director at Private Sector Foundation Uganda, in this episode discusses why it's important to create alternative pools of finance for the private sector.

The Bank of England is facing criticism from small business owners, who see plenty of support being offered to individuals to help them cope with rising interest rates and the cost of living crisis but little being done to support their businesses that are suffering from significantly higher operating costs. Having watched the Central Bank hike interest rates consistently since the end of 2021, Small and Medium Enterprises have had to deal with not just the effects on their markets of Brexit, but a cost of living crisis that hits them equally hard as individual households. They made representations to Downing Street to ask the Prime Minister to intervene on their behalf when the Budget is delivered next month to provide some well needed support. The January inflation report was published yesterday, and it showed despite the stabilization of energy costs, headline inflation only fell marginally from 10.5% to 10.1% while core inflation fell from 6.3% to 5.8%. The price of staple food stuffs like low fat milk, eggs and pasta rose significantly, while the cost of olive oil alone rose by 40% compared with a year ago. Despite headline inflation only falling by 0.4% year-on-year, the financial markets believe that it was sufficient to cause the Bank of England to slow or even bring a halt to the current cycle of interest rate rises. The Marine Institute has published the report, New Connections IV – A Review of Irish Participation in EU Marine Research Projects 2014–2020. The report illustrates the success of the Irish marine research community in competitive European Union-funded programmes from 2014 to 2020. Over the six-year period from 2014-2020, Irish organisations participated in 314 marine-focused collaborative projects resulting in over €158 million total grant-aid. Horizon 2020 was the programme with the highest grant-aid of €91.5 million and the highest number of projects at 147 with Irish participation. A total of 84 Interreg V projects received grant-aid of €58 million. Small and Medium Enterprises were the main recipient of this EU grant-aid, based on number of participating organisations across the six programmes reviewed, followed by public bodies and Higher Education Institutes. “This publication shows the breadth and scale of marine-related research, training and innovation being undertaken in Ireland,” Dr Paul Connolly, CEO of the Marine Institute said. “For the next phase of EU funding instruments, we have a unique opportunity to evolve marine research capacity in Ireland, by collaborating and integrating international expertise, for example through the Horizon Europe Framework Programme.” Horizon Europe includes the five EU Missions which aim to address societal challenges, to connect with citizens and empower them as actors of change. One of the five Missions sets out to Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030, which requires a new systemic and global approach. The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) also offers a unique opportunity to engage with the global community in addressing the UN Sustainable Development agenda, and the potential of the ocean to contribute to this agenda is huge. Dr Connolly added, “We are at an exciting moment in our relationship with the ocean. The decade ahead is crucial as we all pursue the vision of a healthy, clean, sustainable ocean that will allow future generations to thrive on our planet.” The report New Connections IV complements its predecessors New Connections I, II (2007– 2013) and III (2014–2016). New Connections IV includes projects funded under the following EU programmes: Horizon 2020, Interreg V, European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), Erasmus+, LIFE and European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). The world did not stop when the Lockdown was mandated. Instead, it just went online. And businesses too saw an opportunity and decided to go digital. Aiding this ambition and move was Meta- the company that has most social media under its wing including Facebook, Instagram & Whatsapp. And because everyone juggled between these 3 apps, many Small & Medium Enterprises decided to use them to connect with customers. In this episode of Advertising Is Dead, Varun talks to two entrepreneurs- Pallavi & Mamta, who have been scaling their business digitally. SuperBottoms was born 6 years ago when Pallavi was looking for that perfect diaper for her newborn and was disappointed to find none. Pallavi was a part of many new mother groups and forums online and started product testing in 2014. She channeled her diapers singularly through Facebook Groups while still working, starting up, and managing her baby. Pallavi reached out to multiple new mothers who helped her market the product online, and these women have now grown with the company. During 2017-18 she started selling through WhatsApp, which now accounts for 60-70% of SuperBottoms' sales. Today, SuperBottoms employs over 100 employees, 80 of which are women, and 70 of whom are new mothers!Odette, based in Bengaluru and started by fashionista Mamata Roy, brings a well-curated line of fashion jewelry such as bracelets, rings, earrings and brooches, shoes, and accessories including belts, clutches, and sunglasses.
