“Our Greatest Reboots” features the gang reunited, including Billy Business of Hot Takes with Billy Biz and the YouTube Channel “Reboot It”! By the way, our sister show “Reboot It” is coming back. In this primer episode of The Greatest Pod, we discuss the “art” of the reboot, if such a thing exists. Also, much of this episode is looking back on OUR best reboots on the channel. Some real life reboots that were made during our hiatus were pretty similar to “our” imaginary versions. Barbie is in the same genre and nearly the same tone as our He-man Pitch. Our episode about The Universal Monster is maybe our most popular piece but the Blumhouse Universal monster movies are hit and miss so far. Are we better than Leigh Whannell? NO. But it's interesting how often we think like the best of the big boys. Overall this conversation asks almost, what evolutionary purpose is there to reinterpret stories this much. Is our present proclivity to remake rather than create stunting that evolution? Reboots are gonna happen. We're trying to use our powers for good. Is that possible? Find out every week on Reboot It coming this summer back to YouTube. Link below! Check out the episodes we reference in the ep and subscribe so you get the new ones first! “The Greatest Pod Reboots DC Comics” is our attempt to explain what we think is not quite optimized in the modern DC Comics universe. Of course, we talk about reimagining the role of “The Trinity” of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman BUT WE ALSO want to make characters like Bronze Tiger, Lady Shiva, and The Question become more important to the fans. DC has so many forgotten characters that need bolstering and so many sections of their universe that need more exploring. We love DC Black Label and Elseworlds but the main universe needs some rejuvenation babay and we have some ideas. Right or wrong we're interesting so fire up the ep baby!! Follow us! “The Greatest Pod Goes Evil” is about what we would do IF we were evil, which villains we most identify with, and what even is “evil?” Ed, Ron, and Producer Bill discuss the other side of heroism. Ed and OB discussed podcast feedback, and debated about the greatest rock band. They also talked about the evolution of music, innovation, generational bias, and the longevity and greatness of rock bands. The conversation expanded to the cultural impact of older musicians and current artists, as well as the popularity of Taylor Swift's movies.
In this episode, the Goods from the Woods Boys are joined once again by the destroyer of all comedy stages, Ed Greer! We try out the United Kingdom's post popular energy drink called "Lucozade". We chat about Ed's hometown of Kansas City, Missouri which is home to a bunch of hilarious mythical cryptids and an all-too-real BBQ technical college called "Rib Tech". This one is going to show The Greatest Pod's musical tastes and our ages, but we also make some compelling arguments for our “Greatest Movie Soundtracks”. There are of course interesting choices and glaring omissions. We discuss and debate the soundtracks that introduced us to new songs back in the pre-Tik Tok music market. How fresh did “Regulate” by Warren G and Nate Dogg on the Above The Rim soundtrack make a young Producer Bill feel? Did Ron reach his athletic peak listening to a song from the Rocky 3 soundtrack? Which song from the Jackie Brown soundtrack gives Ed the relentless feels? Listen to this and you'll know! Follow us! In this episode dubbed, “The Greatest Pod on Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever” we discuss and debate the film. But this episode is also an examination of how fans perceive super hyped and pivotal pieces of comic book entertainment. They can't just be stand-alone pieces of entertainment and satisfying by their own standards. No, now each comic book movie is supposed to advance its main narrative while also planting seeds for future stories and weaving important sections of a grand tapestry we'll be able to see later. But for now, all across a reactionary internet the neckbeards and the culture warriors have to have their say about its relative “wokeness” for good or ill. The hardcore “comics theorists” must swoop in to decide whether or not they are mad that the story wasn't based on their favorite five comics or the fan fic they've been working on for years. And all of a sudden it's not “just a movie” anymore. Well here it's a goddang movie and this is what we had to say about it and how it may set up a new status quo in the MCU. Follow us! There are superheroes who fly through the sky, run fast enough to time travel and save the world on a daily basis. These are not them. This conversation concerns “The Greatest Street Level Superheroes.” Does Batman count? Isn't it weird how many of the street-level superheroes in DC are just members of the Bat family? Is Spider-Man ”street level?” Kevin Feige thinks so. Do we? How many street-level heroes have transcended being street-level? Was that good for those characters? Questions abound in this supersized gem. Stay til the end to hear a fantastic fan letter that truly encapsulates what's so great about The Greatest Pod! Follow us! “The Greatest Comic Book Movies By Decade Part IV” ….boy we really thought we could do this in like one or two episodes, tops. But no, around 2016 they started making so many damn comic book movies it was like a nuclear arms race!! Captain America: Civil War and Batman vs Superman coming out in the same year???? Madness. From Suicide Squad and Antman Quantum of Solace (or whatever) to bangers like Enter The Spiderverse and Infinity War this half decade was amazing for the genre. We've struck out at Paramount+, Disney+, and Hulu, so now we're taking our ideas for The Breakfast Club to Universal and their Peacock service! There's just one giant catch: we're pitching to Michael Bay... Oh and wait...did we say one catch? We meant two...this also has to tie into the American Pie franchise... American Pie and the Breakfast Club were their respective love letters to teenage angst from the 90's and 80's (respectively) and who better to guide the latest merger and reboot with sensitivity and understanding like Michael Bay?! With all-star turns from Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Rick Moranis, the film became one of the most unexpected hits of the 80s. But after 7 successful seasons of animated TV and one disastrous live-action sequel, the 90s could not figure out what to do with these ectoplasmic plumbers. A bevy of almost-made sequels plunged the series into development hell. Then, in 2016, a reboot exploded the franchise back across pop culture with the force and fury of a containment unit shut down by the d**kless Walter Peck. Having never met a reboot they couldn't redo, Sony responded to the non-troversy by doubling down, so a new Ecto-1 will ride AGAIN this year! But lukewarm word-of-mouth already has the studio itching for a third do-over... What's the Crew to do with a franchise that has more baggage than a cruise ship? Let's just say...The good guys dress in black, remember that, just in case we ever face to face and make contact. But it won't go how you think. But as we arrive at the legendary Skywalker Ranch, our pool of leads is running dry. It's do-or-die time as Uncle George asks us to activate the Beta Capsule and plot his first foray into the world of superhero cinema with one of the world's biggest heroes: Ultraman! Ultraman aka Urutoraman aka the secret identity of kaiju-busting Science Patrolman Shin Hayata, was Japan's first homegrown superhero - a bona fide cultural phenomenon which grew out of the success of Godzilla and swept the East as Adam West Batmania was sweeping the West. Ultraman is a utopian science fiction character, meant to appear, in the words of designer Toru Narita, as the "Incarnation of Truth, Justice, and Beauty." The Ultra Series is the progenitor of all Japanese tokusatsu shows, including Kamen Rider and Super Sentai/Power Rangers. The franchise holds a Guinness World Record for most spin-off shows (37 and counting), and has an impenetrably deep lore and roster. Beloved, mimicked, constantly reinvented and damn near milked dry, Ultraman should be a franchise that's easy as pie to reboot, right? ... Right? Guys? *REBOOT IT MERCH IS AVAILABLE NOW:* http://tee.pub/lic/L2Fboy63Wa4 The Reboot Crew has hit the end of our job-seeking tour of Hollywood. Our last hope? The one meeting we didn't want to take...With the nicest guy in town. The simple, uncontroversial, crowd-pleasing filmmaker whose unique vision is the bleeding edge of cinema. (Isn't it?!) Yes, the Crew finally comes face-to-face with Zack Snyder, and he's rebooting the most obvious choice: Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Alleged toxic garbage person Joss Whedon wasn't always best known as the uncredited writer/director of 2017's Justice League. Before masterminding Marvel Studios' The Avengers, he was a simple TV showrunner with a dream: To mash up urban fantasy, teenage angst, slyly provocative sexuality, TV-budget superheroics, and self-aware trope-busting in an era when television had never heard such nonsense. The result was Buffy, a show which defied convention, set fandom on fire, created its own TV genre, and elevated Joss to the level of Nerd Jesus. Ah, the nineties. Such a simpler time. In a brand new millennium, where the entire landscape of entertainment has been remade in Buffy's image even as her creator has fallen, fandom's new golden boy steps up to the plate for a crack at the mother of all nerd reboots. *REBOOT IT MERCH IS AVAILABLE NOW, based on YOUR votes:* http://tee.pub/lic/L2Fboy63Wa4 The Reboot Crew is on a job-seeking tour of the only game left in Hollywood: Streaming services! Warner Bros.' golden child JJ Abrams just yanked us back from a parallel universe to tackle one of the longest-simmering, most-hyped superhero reboots in town: SPAWN! Spawn creator Todd McFarlane is second only to the great Stan Lee when it comes to comic book hucksterism. His indie superhero passion project made good on all the hype throughout the 90s, topping comic book sales charts with millions of copies, launching one of the world's most successful toy companies, wowing critics and audiences with a revolutionary HBO cartoon, and finally hitting the big-screen with a special effects spectacular in 1997. The movie was an unmitigated bomb. Book sales tanked in short order. But the Toddfather is nothing if not persistent. For close to a decade, he's been promising an all-new Spawn movie produced, written and directed by him. He's even attached bonafide mega-stars Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner. Spawn's back on the top of the comic book sales charts. And with Bad Robot and the Reboot Crew in the driver's seat...What could possibly go wrong with this reboot? Right? Guys...? That may have been the most unlikely run to a natty in history. • Ole Miss fans sure do love to drink! (No judgment at all.) • Jaden Rashada is going to Miami for $9.5 million. Is that crazy? • What happens when one of these top-dollar prospects bust? • Do rich people turn down money? • Why wouldn't a quarterback play for Lane Kiffin at this point? • Auburn's Jabari Smith didn't end up with our beloved Thunder. Topics covered: • Jay struck gold (proverbially) during his 50th Birthday weekend in Louisville. • What other kinds of good things happened during Jay's drunken trip? • It looks like reporters will be welcomed, or perhaps encouraged, to cover games in person this fall. That forces a curious choice for folks like Jay and Neal, who have spent the past two or three years doing shows off campus. • Will the SEC actually change its scheduling paradigm as it relates to football? With the upcoming addition of Oklahoma and Texas, something has to change. Still, Neal thinks even more teams will be part of the SEC before too long. That adds even more complexity to the task. • Is Miami positioning itself to jump away from the ACC? • Is Auburn's Jabari Smith the best NBA prospect in the 2022 Draft class? • Ole Miss' approach toward recruiting high-school players is very interesting — and may put the Rebels uniquely ahead of the curve. • Coaches make more money than ever now. When it comes to who's responsible for a comic book's success, who is “The Greatest: Writers or Artists?” It's an age-old debate and one we don't resolve on this broadcast but I do think we make some salient points about how necessary each of their contributions are. Each tribe has certain limitations and only through their combined powers do we get the best stuff. There's some discussion of the “comic book auteur” as well and how these rare cartoonists who can truly do both jobs well are less plentiful than we think, thus deserving of all the accolades they get. But when it comes to work-for-hire comics created by teams placed together under editorial direction there needs to be some sort of revision of credits when these things are adapted into television and movies. As we note in this conversation there's no morally defensible reason Matt Fraction got a producer credit on the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus while the artist David Aja didn't. Follow us! Finally, The Greatest Pod tackles the essential millennial question. Who's “The Greatest : Stallone or Schwarzenegger?” Producer Bill is the referee while Ed and Ron fight it out. It's a wonderfully silly argument that tells us just as much about ourselves as either of the subjects. This one's bound to ruffle some feathers especially if you're some psycho who doesn't like either of them or you're a stan for one over the other. From Rambo to Stop or My Mom Will Shoot and from Terminator to Twins, we are so very happy to debate who is the quintessential 80's into 90's ubermensch. Follow us! This is Ed and Ron having a pretty raw conversation about so-called “toxic fandom”. We ask “who gets to decide what's an appropriate reaction when someone screws with your childhood characters?” The answer is us of course*! So listen as we try to answer an age-old question in the realm of pop culture fandom which is, “How Childish Is TOO Childish?” *Obviously we are joking about being the final arbiters of taste. We talk some about how everybody thinks they're the last word on everything. Speaking of which PLEASE! PLEASE! RATE AND REVIEW The Greatest Pod on Apple Podcasts even if you don't use it. In this one, we talk about diversity in comics & media. What does that word even mean? Is it a philosophy or a business tactic? If it is a business tactic is that wrong? What is “pandering?” Does it exist? There's a low-key civil war in comics right now over the future of the medium and I guess in this one we pick a side. Although I kinda think we blow up everybody and start a new country. But you listen and be the judge. There's also a discussion about how the work-for-hire rates publishers pay creators might be influencing how many many “diverse” characters will ever be in “BIG 2 Comics”. This is a frank, often profane discussion. It's not a collection of talking points or just Twitter come to life. It's a real conversation that needed to be had. Enjoy! Correction: In this episode, Ed goes on a rant and he forgets that Ivan Reis drew Cyborg for a second. *That totally invalidates the observation he was making.* *sarcasm* Follow us! Is magic a great tool for fantasy storytelling or is it the greatest trick ever pulled? Ron loves fantasy books. They helped him get through tough times. Ed and Producer Bill grew up hardcore sci-fi and comic book nerds. Today is the day we get to the bottom of why Ed and Bill are so damn hard on magic but they'll read stories about webslingers and flying dudes all day. Topics covered: • EAT OUT, MISSOURI: The situation at V's Parkside Bar & Grill in El Dorado Springs, Mo., sounds positively solid. • Drama in Oxford regarding some flyers in the 'hood. • Jay rails against a DAY TRIP he was conned into doing. Ancillary question: Are Erin and Ben Napier actually cool? Or is it a TV thing? • Examining the Rachel Nichols-Maria Taylor kerfuffle from a few different angles. • Friends the guys have made along the way ... • How are they going to cover college football games this fall? • Neal discovers BringATrailer.com and immediately targets BIG GAME while Jay aims a bit lower. • What is happening with Name-Image-Likeness deals? Pat Casey has been a friend for over a decade and this week he brings us a super juicy question: Is Mission Impossible the best spy movie franchise of all time? It certainly appears to have some stiff competition but it all comes back to what you expect from a spy franchise. Is it womanizing, boozing, stunts, and invincibility or do your tastes lie more towards tradecraft, teamwork, and Herculean problem-solving? You might know Pat from his numerous screenwriting successes including the cult hit animated series GOLAN THE INSATIABLE or he and writing partner Josh Miller's surprise smash SONIC THE HEDGEHOG which spawned its much-awaited sequel SONIC 2. This is a great film discussion with significant contributions from a dude who is presently a blockbuster screenwriter, so listen up film nerds ‘cause we're gonna learn ya somethin' about just who is the best onscreen spy of all time. On this extra special episode of The Greatest Pod, we interview one of our own, the contrarian curmudgeon, long-time TV producer, ¼ of The Reboot It Crew, ⅓ of The Greatest Pod, the great Producer Bill. He talks about his gateway into nerd culture, the thing that made him a comic book fan to this day and set him on the path to lifelong fandom….The Spider-man Clone Saga. I know, I know but when you hear us talk about it you'll see that the much-maligned Spider Clone story did exactly what it was supposed to do which is sell comics and get new fans to come to Marvel. This podcast shows that both of those missions were accomplished in spades. It was the longest crossover in comics history so somebody was reading it, and Bill was one of those kids. Bill is @seebilldraw on Instagram and you can check him out there exclusively as far as social media. Follow us too! It's a special episode of Greatest Pod in The South — the one where Jay G. Tate (AuburnSports.com) sits down with his wife, Courtney Tate (AuburnSports.com), and they discuss a lot of stuff. • 'She had nice teeth.' • The Tates' trip to Punta Cana. • Who is El Capitan? • Jay went down in flames on Day Two. • Everybody's in a great mood. • We hear the other side of Jay's classic pick-and-roll dating move. • 'It's a funny word.' • Jay and Courtney review their relationship through the years. • A good marriage sure helps when life throws nasty curveballs. • When did you realize that Jay is legitimately weird? • 'A true partnership' • A young Courtney stands up in a meeting and wins over her man. • They offer some relationship advice: Same team, listen (not just hear) and think ahead/anticipate. • Old School Cool. Is Michael Keaton the Greatest Onscreen Batman? That's what friend of the show Billy Business has come to discuss with Ron and Ed. You know him from his work at Fandom, his podcast Hot Takes with Billy Biz, and of course, the YouTube phenomenon Reboot It. This one is a fun dive into what it means to be a great Batman on the big screen. What qualities make for a good Batman or a good Bruce Wayne? One interesting point is that those seem to be two different roles. It's a great trip from the 40's serials to the latest films as we discuss and debate what makes a Batman truly great! We have NY Times Best-Selling Author Daniel Kraus join us to talk about his love of Ben, the main character in the seminal zombie movie NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! We discuss the impact this character had on a young writer and what this movie added to horror film discourse. Daniel knows story and seeing George Romero's world through his eyes sparks a great conversation about what the zombie movie is saying about society. It's a bit deeper than “consumerism is bad”, or “society is fragile.” The zombie movie is a unique way to examine who we are under duress and Ben was the original hero of that new genre. To this day he remains an icon in the world of horror so enjoy us talking about why. Kevin Hearne is the New York Times Best Selling author of The Iron Druid Chronicles, Tricked, A Plague of Giants, and Heir to the Jedi, a canon STAR WARS novel. Anakin Skywalker is the throughline in one of the most influential sagas ever filmed. Kevin, bringing years of story-telling acumen to the table, schools us on how even Vader could've been greater. It's a fun conversation about a universe everyone knows and even though this conversation might ruffle some feathers it's certainly not a hot take fest. Remember when Tales from the Crypt started making movies, y'all. That was weird. It led to some pretty epic things, including Billy Zane punching a hole in a guy's head and getting his hand stuck in that guy's head. This movie is amazing, especially for how it treats its black women. Ed Greer, co-creator of Reboot It and The Greatest Pod, joins us as we talk about Demon Knight!
