In an interview conducted on-site at The Council's Insurance Leadership Forum last Fall, Leader's Edge spoke with Mike Krzyzewski, former head coach for Duke University men's basketball and the Team USA Olympics team. Krzyzewski shares stories of leadership, talent, and rivalries with Editor-in-Chief Sandy Laycox, who attended the University of North Carolina, Duke's primary rival. Although Krzyzewski is retired, the rivalry burns strong.
Had he not chosen the coaching profession, Cliff Ellis could've easily spent his life as a professional musician. In the mid-1960s, his group The Villagers was a sensation and even recorded at the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Ellis remembers joining Roy Orbison on stage at a sold-out concert in Dothan, Ala. "If you can perform in front of people with Roy Orbison behind you, you're going to be OK going up against Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski," he said. Ellis announced his retirement in December, ending a 49-year coaching career. His final 17 seasons were at Coastal Carolina, where he led the Chanticleers to 297 victories and 10 postseason appearances. His 831 career NCAA victories put him at ninth in Division I basketball history behind Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Bob Huggins, Jim Calhoun, Roy Williams, Bob Knight, Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp. Ellis says the changing landscape of college athletics, namely NIL and the transfer portal, led him to walk away. He's currently writing a book about his life, and he looks back fondly on his time at Clemson from 1984 to 1994. Ellis led Clemson to its only ACC title in school history in 1989-90 when the Tigers claimed the regular-season title with back-to-back home triumphs over North Carolina and Duke. Four years later, he abruptly resigned and later took the head job at Auburn. He said he was angry over the Clemson administration's handling of the Wayne Buckingham situation in the face of NCAA scrutiny of the player's eligibility as a freshman. Ellis remembers exactly where he was on Jan. 18, 1990 when he heard Danny Ford was out as Clemson's coach. "I was playing golf with our pilot, Earle Ambrose," he said. "We were on the 15th hole at Boscobel. It was a tough, tough time. "But I told Danny at the time to tell Clemson thanks a million. Because they paid him a million dollars. And then he went to Arkansas and got another thanks-a-million. I never got those thanks-a-millions."

Scott Drew has a tight, but successful and promising coaching tree that is taking the Big 12 by storm. Jerome Tang brought Kansas State to the Elite Eight last year while Grant McCasland was leading UNT to the NIT title, before leading Texas Tech to 22 wins in his first season in Lubbock. Paul Mills is now set out to turn Wichita State around after leading Oral Roberts to an undefeated conference title and a Sweet 16 appearance. Former Baylor women's coach Kim Mulkey is back in the news after her polarizing comments after a brawl between her LSU Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks Sunday. Mulkey said she wishes South Carolina "picked on Angel Reese" instead as a way of saying "pick on someone your own size." Would we brush these comments off if they came from any other coach? It's time for another potentially excellent episode of the Greatest Pod in The South starring Neal McCready of RebelGrove.com and Jay G. Tate of AuburnSports.com. In honor of Veterans Day, we salute our athlete veterans and say thank you for your service to all our veterans. Transcript 1. MLB (Major League Baseball) legend Ted Williams' put his hall of fame career on hold for three years of military service. In the middle of his 19-year baseball career, he opted out of baseball and into the Navy for three years. During his assignment to the Marine Corps, his piloting skills were as revered as his ability to swing a baseball bat. In 1952, he missed part of the season when he was called up to fight in the Korean War. He returned home and finished out his historic career in 1960. 2. Pat Tillman is likely this generation's most notable veteran. He walked away from a successful career with the Arizona Cardinals (NFL – National Football League) to join the Army after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. His brother joined the Army as well. Pat served with the Army Rangers until he tragically lost his life in action in 2004. 3. Before offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva played for the Baltimore Ravens (NFL), he went to West Point and served as an Army Ranger Captain until 2015. He has had quite an impressive football career since then. Villanueva is one of few active professional athletes that are veterans. 4. Before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball with the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), he was drafted into the Army during World War II. While he never served overseas, he spent time at Fort Hood and Camp Breckinridge in Kentucky, where he served as an athletic coach. 5. Legendary "Coach K" - Mike Krzyzewski (pronounced Sha-chef-ski) - played basketball at West Point and served as a field artillery liaison to the infantry in the early 1970s at Camp Pelham. After his military career, he began coaching and was the basketball coach at West Point before leaving to coach the Duke basketball team. Krzyzewski, who also coached Team U.S.A., is the most successful coach in men's college basketball history and was inducted into the basketball hall of fame. Coach K will retire after the 2021-22 basketball season.

All of the Catch & Shoot 2.0 crew is enjoying their time off, getting recharged for the upcoming season ...but we still want to make sure you get your Pure Hoops Media fix. So we're sharing some of our favorite shows that you might have missed. Back in June 2nd of this year, news broke that Mike Krzyzewski was to retire from Duke at the end of the 2021-2022 season. On the same day, the Celtics announced Danny Ainge was stepping down as President of Basketball Operations, with head coach Brad Stevens taking the reins. One man in the middle of all this was Stadium Basketball Analyst Jeff Goodman. Jeff broke the news on Coach K while also covering the news of the Celtics moves. Jeff joined our Aaron Berlin and Otto Strong and gave us his thoughts on why Krzyzewski is stepping away and what to expect of the Blue Devils when Jon Scheyer takes over, plus how long he thinks Stevens -- always a coach at heart -- remains in his front office role in Boston. A seismic shift in college basketball, this 2 months and one day after Roy Williams retired from North Carolina. The dominant era that has been the case since 1986 will be over after the 2022 NCAA tournament. Here were my thoughts about Krzyzewski deciding to leave Duke after 42 years in Durham. Please leave some comments anytime you get the chance.

Roy Williams really needs no introduction—he's a college coaching legend. He's a Basketball Hall of Famer. He's won three NCAA titles. And he's been to more Final Fours than every coach in history not named Krzyzewski, Wooden or Smith. And his time at Kansas was equally legendary. Though his Jayhawk teams never won it all, they still won more games than any other program in the 90s. Four Final Fours. Nine Big 12 titles. And the only undefeated Big 12 season in conference history. Roy Williams made his mark in Lawrence. Success aside, not every story has a perfect ending in the moment. But time has a funny way of healing old wounds. And Roy Williams still cares so deeply about his time in Lawrence, his Jayhawk players, and the fans that filled Allen Fieldhouse. So, for the first time, the legendary coach is opening up to Kansas fans about his story, his time leading the Jayhawks, and all the great memories.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On today's episode, Jason kicks things off with a deep dive into the Pac-12's impressive run through the NCAA Tournament thus far. The Conference of Champions has 4 teams in the Sweet 16, and they all have one thing in common: bright, young head coaches. All of this begs the question - is the Pac-12's sudden surge the beginning of the end for the Blue Bloods? Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams are two of the greatest coaches in college basketball history, but UNC getting bounced in the first round and Duke missing the Tournament altogether feels like a sign of things to come; Krzyzewski and Williams have a coaching style and overall style of play may not work in today's game. The first weekend of March Madness definitely feels like a changing of the guard in college basketball. Later, Producer Rob G joins in on the action to help Jason make sense of all the latest NBA trade rumors as we approach Thursday's trade deadline. The Boston Celtics appear to be the team most in need of a shake-up, and thankfully the Orlando Magic seem willing to send them disgruntled superstar Aaron Gordon to help expedite the process. On the flip side, all signs point to Lonzo Ball leaving the New Orleans Pelicans at some point in the near future, but which team is willing to meet his reported salary demands? Point guard is arguably the deepest position in the NBA so Ball may have no choice but to accept a lesser deal this offseason. Finally, Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry could be on the move as well, and if he ends up heading 'home' to the Philadelphia 76ers, he could be the piece that swings the balance of power entirely in the Eastern Conference. A look at a not so stellar start for the ACC/Big Ten men's college basketball challenge, well, at least on the part of the ACC. With only one win to open the mash up any hopes of catching up on Wednesday night slipped through the conference's fingers with three COVID related postponed. One of several notable losses belonged to Duke. Following the game coach Mike Krzyzewski talked extensively about how the pandemic is impacting the players and the game as a whole. Will and Jim talk about the conference teams and their performances in a quick review of opening night. Find out how Will aptly applies a Wile E. Coyote analogy to the Hokies. Krzyzewski Is the NCAA serious when they say, 'Student-Athlete'? In other words, do they really care about the education (first) and the mental and physical well-being of the person before the athlete? It's not a difficult question to answer. There is a need for uniformity and one central leadership role to guide sports at the college level. In other words, the buck stops here. Will we see changes in college sports following COVID-19? Last week our quote was from John Wooden, a man considered by many people to be the greatest college basketball coach ever. This week we hear from the guy who is probably the closest to Wooden in that regard, Mike Krzyzewski, or as he is often referred to, Coach K. Like Wooden, Coach K has a ton of great quotes. He has also written numerous books on leadership and team-building, and I highly recommend you check them out. My favorite is Leading with the Heart. There is so much great information in there and so much that is quotable. I'm not sure if today's quote came from that book or somewhere else, but I do know that the quote is one of those that is so good and has multiple layers to it. "A leader needs to be a part of a mutual adaptation that forms a combination of the best of everyone." Lots to unpack there, so check out this week's episode to hear how I do that.
Errors snowball, and compounding is like the Marine Corps—no better friend, and no worse enemy. In this episode, we’ll talk about how Jocko Willink, Mike Krzyzewski, and Bill Ackman use a tactical “reset” to get back on track. Let’s start with the opposite. Time’s running out, everything is on the line, mistakes are being made, and it looks like the window of opportunity is closing. The position is going from bad to worse, and a vicious cycle is forming: bad position, bad decision, worse position, worse decision. And on, and on. Balls are getting dropped, emotions are running hot, and stress is widespread. Chaos reigns. Corners are being cut since time is in short supply. Confusion, haste, sloppiness, complexity, errors, anxiety, weariness. It’s a nightmare situation. This description could apply to a crunch period at work, the fourth quarter of a basketball game, or just about any part of life where results matter. We all know the phrase: “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” But sometimes even the toughest know it’s time to take a beat. In this episode, we’ll talk about how Jocko Willink, Mike Krzyzewski, and Bill Ackman use a tactical “reset” to get back on track. Jocko Willink: “Detachment” First, let’s talk about resetting through the frame of “detachment.” Let’s start with the toughest of the tough. If you know Jocko Willink, you know he’s no wimp. Jocko is a huge proponent of what he calls “detaching.” In the show notes, there’s a link to a podcast episode where Jocko dives into this idea and the experience that drove it home for him. https://fhww.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/107-jocko-willink.pdf In a nutshell, during a complicated, stressful training mission on an offshore oil rig, Jocko realized that by taking a few steps away from his team’s position, he could re-assess the situation with fresh eyes. When you “detach,” priorities become clear. You can stop spinning your wheels and get back to ticking off your priorities. If you listen to his podcast—and I highly recommend it—you’ll hear from tons of people who had to reset mid-battle, right in the thick of the fog of war. Coach K: “We Will Win” It’s February 12, 2019, and 22,000 Louisville fans have packed the KFC Yum! Center to see their Cardinals beat the Duke Blue Devils. At 9 minutes, 54 seconds remaining in the game, a Louisville player hits a 3-point shot that puts Lousiville ahead 59-36. At that point, Coach K had never seen a Duke team recover from such a dramatic deficit. Before we discuss what Krzyzewski said during his own timeout, let’s take a timeout of our own. I’ve included a bunch of links in the show notes. The first is the full video highlight reel for the comeback. The second is an incredible article by the NCAA (written in conjunction with ESPN’s data) laying out the highlights of how the game progressed along with a chart showing the statistical probability of victory in a time series graph. At its trough, the win probability was 0.1%, meaning that Duke had a 1 in 1,000 chance of victory. It’s times like these that coaches like Coach K and programs like Duke don’t show up in the numbers. https://youtu.be/OydPe7ZtdRY https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2019-02-13/improbable-duke-comeback-vs-louisville-explained-coach-k-and So what happens? Coach K calls a timeout and makes a tactical shift (more on that in a moment), but more importantly, he communicates the message that he believes Duke will earn the win. In the article, he mentions that he wasn’t necessarily being 100% truthful. Tactically, Coach K shifts to an aggressive, attacking form of defense that doesn’t concede any ground to the opposing team as they try to maneuver the ball from under their own basket into their opponents’ half. The results are unbelievable. Louisville implodes under the pressure, giving up 9 turnovers in the final minutes of the game, and Duke wins by 2. I didn’t see the stats to prove it, but I’m relatively sure that most of the points Duke scored in the comeback were transition opportunities directly resulting from opponents’ turnovers. If you can visualize a steal where two defenders strip the ball from a lone ballhandler steps from his own basket, you know that this is asymmetry at its finest. Oh—and regarding frustration, the tables have completely turned. Two points to Duke, and the Louisville transition starts right back over again. Right back into the jaws of the full-court press. This is coaching at its purest. (A) don’t panic; we can win (B) let’s re-take the aggressive, proactive stance in this game by rapidly forcing a situation that favors us drastically—a suffocating, flustering, frustrating, exhausting, and in-your-face defense that plays to all of our strengths. Coach K knows how to reset. Bill Ackman: “Back to Basics” We can also frame the tactical “reset” as “back to basics.” Bill Ackman lays out his basic investment criteria in an interview (and I’ve linked it in the show notes). Before we move on—because I know I’d be wondering if I were listening—this is what he says he wants. Businesses that are: Simple Predictable Free Cash Flow Generative Dominant And that have: High Barriers to Entry Limited Exposure to Extrinsic Risk Strong Balance Sheets (and as a result no need to access capital markets) Excellent Management & Good Governance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU83fZF6HcU&feature=youtu.be&t=669 Now, if you follow the financial media, you might be wondering why he needs to go “back to basics” at all! What am I talking about? Bill Ackman has been in the media recently after a windfall profit from what’s been called the “best trade of all time” since he spent $27 million to make $2.6 billion dollars with extremely limited exposure (but I should mention that the total exposure was probably about $700 million on a worst-case basis). So still a 5-bagger. And he did it by buying credit default swaps or CDS on three credit default swap indices (both high yield and investment grade) as a hedge on the credit markets. Again—for those interested, I’ve linked to the letter where he both describes the position and gives a brief primer on the mechanics behind how CDS works. It’s really awesome reading if you’re into this stuff. https://assets.pershingsquareholdings.com/2020/03/26222617/Pershing-Square-Capital-Management-L.P.-Releases-Letter-to-Investors-March-26-2020.pdf And I’ve also linked to an excellent interview he did with Shane Parrish of Farnam Street (although his podcast—which is excellent—is called The Knowledge Project). He talks with Shane about the rationale behind the hedge as well as his thoughts on bouncing back from failure. It’s an excellent listen. https://fs.blog/knowledge-project/bill-ackman/ Now if you’re not familiar with Ackman, I know you must be asking yourself: “What on Earth does all this have to do with resetting? Seems like Ackman is doing just fine.” And I hear you—in his interview with Shane, he also acknowledges that much of what I’m about to describe is firmly under the umbrella of “first world problems.” But if we re-wind the tape, Bill Ackman had been having an incredibly difficult run from 2015 until about 2019. Let’s go back in time. During its 2015 peak, Pershing Square was running $20 billion in AUM. Ackman was in the middle of a battle over Herbalife, which he believed was a pyramid scheme. Between 2012 and 2018, Ackman held short positions (first outright short positions in Herbalife stock, and later put options). Ackman ran a very public campaign to out what he considered to be unethical practices (and make money if the share price dropped). Carl Icahn, another billionaire, had built an enormous position on the other side of the trade, aiming to catalyze what he called “the mother of all short squeezes.” This squeeze would basically make the short side submit and unwind the position, causing a big run-up in the share price. With this long and ultimately unfruitful campaign in the background, he began to have serious problems with an investment in Valeant, a pharmaceutical company. Over the life of Pershing’s investment, Valeant dropped from $190/share to $11/share during a very public activist stake (and I have a really interesting article from the New York Times linked that includes a timeline, for those interested). And for a Murphy’s Law moment, Pershing was sued by Allergan shareholders, who claimed that Pershing bought Allergan shares with insider knowledge of a looming takeover bid from Valeant. All told—per the Wall Street Journal—Valeant cost Pershing $4 billion (there’s a link in the show notes to that too). https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/19/business/valeant-ackman-timeline.html https://www.wsj.com/articles/william-ackmans-pershing-square-sold-stake-in-valeant-1489439314?mod=article_inline What a nightmare. Now let’s skip ahead So the mid-teens were a rough few years for Ackman and Pershing. But now let’s skip ahead to 2019. Let’s start with a headline from Yahoo! Finance on January 5, 2020. Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman delivers 58.1% for investors in 2019. The article, linked below, was written by Julia La Roche, and I certainly couldn’t sum things up any better: “Like Buffett, the mission at Pershing Square is to have a permanent capital structure. Ackman said the firm took a step in that direction, launching a publicly-traded fund in 2014 with the long-term plan to have a majority of capital in that vehicle. After posting a return of 40.4% in 2014, the hedge fund experienced negative performance for each consecutive year—until 2019. At the April conference, Ackman attributed the string of poor performance to a couple of bad investments. Those mistakes led to significant investor redemptions, or what Ackman characterized as a “rough patch.” Pershing Square Holdings, the public vehicle, is now 80% of the firm’s capital, Ackman said at the time.” The link to the article is in the show notes. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bill-ackman-pershing-square-2019-performance-130053673.html So what happened? In the interview with Shane, Bill mentions that recover is a “slow, plodding, one-step-at-a-time process.” I think there are lots of reasons for the comeback. I’m sure I’ll leave some out, but I think these ones are critical: He revamped the investor base I believe it’s impossible to be a good long-term investor without committed, locked-in, and relatively under-updated capital He swore off public contests, especially on the short side These drain his time, energy, and attention—his most valuable resources In the interview with Shane, Bill mentions that he’s focused on avoiding catastrophically low “return on invested brain damage” He swore off bets with 100% downside (even if they have the potential to be a 4-bagger) This one speaks to me I just made a mistake with just such a company It was an enormous waste of time, energy and resources And it was pretty embarrassing to do it in public! And last but not least, he returned to his basic criteria, which he literally has engraved into tombstones (also known as deal toys) that sit on every employee’s desk For good measure, I’m including one additional fun article on Ackman that the Wall Street Journal ran. The byline: With performance bad and investors fleeing, Mr. Ackman ‘went activist’ on Pershing Square. https://www.wsj.com/articles/after-suffering-bruising-losses-ackman-pursues-quiet-recovery-11553176760?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D69363972300789071000526555740666532794%7CMCORGID%3DCB68E4BA55144CAA0A4C98A5%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1597609842 Bottom Line Compounding is the 8th wonder of the world, and we need to do everything in our power to make sure we aren’t on the wrong side of it. Well-oiled machines shouldn’t constantly require downtime, but in critical moments, it can be an extremely high-yield decision to pause and reset. Errors snowball, and compounding is like the Marine Corps—no better friend, and no worse enemy. So that does it for this episode. I hope it shows some threads to pull. Wisconsin just had one starter quit the team and another get suspended for a crotch punch. That's how the pod opens. Then Parrish and Norlander get to Coach K going ballistic (22:30) on the Cameron Crazies, and a theory as to why he did -- and then some amusement at Krzyzewski's suggestions for some new chants for the students to use. There is also the Dayton Flyers (40:00) to discuss, as Norlander reported on them for CBSSports.com this week. The Dayton chat leads GP and Norlander to make impromptu predictions on who the four No. 1 seeds will be, and then the mailbag (53:00) comes with both long-overdue Iowa talk and a tremendously tough user-submitted Trivia Time! The biggest news of the week came Tuesday in Charlotte, where Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said the NCAA was lagging and had acted with its head in the sand for too long when it comes to rule changes and player empowerment. It was a significant statement for K to make. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open the pod by going over what he said, in addition to what other coaches at ACC Media Day said in support or opposition of Krzyzewski. From there, some ACC predictions and league chatter (16:40) and then an entertaining evaluation of Snoop Dogg's Late Night in the Phog (27:00) performance, resplendent with money guns and acrobatic dancers. Kansas said it didn't know THAT was going to happen. Snoop Dogg replied, "When you pay for Snoop Dogg, you gonna get Snoop Dogg." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nobody in Division I college basketball history has more wins than Duke’s Hall of Fame coach, Mike Krzyzewski. When Coach K talks, people listen. So, when Krzyzewski lavished praise on the NDSU basketball program following the Blue Devils 85-62 win over the Bison in the NCAA Tournament – Duke led by a narrow 31-27 margin at halftime – folks around college hoops started talking about a rising mid-major basketball power from Fargo, N.D. “They return everybody, watch out man, watch out,” said Coach K. In a game to remember, Bison junior Vinnie Shahid hit Duke for 20 points, cementing his place as one of the players to watch next year in mid-major hoops. Swany and Nolan say Bison fans need to get off their molasses and get behind this hoops program, and make the argument why there's no reason NDSU can't be one of the annual powers in mid-major basketball. Get aboard the Bison hoops train while there's still space, this week, on the Bison Illustrated Podcast!

I've published more than 500 podcast episodes in my podcast career. A couple times a year, there's usually an exciting interview, one that feels like a badge of honor. This week's episode of This Week at VA features the epitome of those interviews. Thanks to a colleague and the great folks at Duke, I had the opportunity to interview Mike Krzyzewski, coach of the men's basketball team at Duke University. As many of you know, Coach K has won multiple NCAA championship titles and is considered a legend in the sport. What many people may not know, is that he is a West Point graduate and a former Army officer. Coach K talks to us about his decision to go to West Point, transitioning from military to college coaching, developing young players, and his experience in the Army. About Coach Mike Krzyzewski (before his career at Duke): Coach K's disciplined, mentally tough teams can be seen as an extension of his own upbringing. Krzyzewski went to West Point and enrolled in the U.S. Military Academy to receive a quality education, play basketball and become an officer in the Army. From 1969-74, Krzyzewski served his country, directing service teams for three years and serving a two-year stint as head coach at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School in Belvoir, Va. In 1974, he resigned from the Army having attained the rank of Captain. When Coach K was just 26, Knight, his former coach at Army, offered him a graduate assistant-ship at Indiana University. That 1975 squad posted an 18-0 mark in the Big Ten and a 31-1 overall record. Prior to his arrival at Duke in 1980, Krzyzewski spent five years building the program at his alma mater in West Point. He led the Cadets to one NIT berth, one ECAC playoff appearance and an overall record of 73-59. Covered in Episode 51: Nominating a #VeteranOfTheDay Interview with Navy Veteran Kevin Quarles His decision to attend West Point A story from his experience in the Army Comparing developing young players to mentoring soldiers How military service made him a better coach Transitioning from military life to coaching life VA Adaptive Sports #VeteranOfTheDay Army Veteran Francis Brown Wai
We may be a little late to March Madness, but in this episode Basketball Court tangles with the ramifications of Coach K taking the vacant Lakers job in 2004. Logically, the bulk of the episode is spent discussing Smush Parker's career, the 2000 Subway Series, and how law school grades are handed out.
Happy Holidays and our pre-end of the year podcast, starting with Christian McCaffery and Leonard Fournette sitting out their bowl games. Is it a smart decision? What does this say about these players? Does the fact that it isn't the BCS Invitational mean anything? Is this worse than Clowney who played the whole season but seemed checked out? How do we feel about Bob Stoops and Oklahoma getting a lot of criticism for the Joe Mixon situation? A coach that needs more criticism is Coach K. Grayson Allen continues to do dumb things on the court and let him get away with it. We waste good time on the Bears this week and talk playoffs next week. We go down the line, who stays and who goes? Coaching? Jay Cutler? Are Pace and Fox on the chopping block? We talk Fantasy with Blair wrapping up his second championship in a row in keeper league and Tyler taking the first Dynasty league crown. We look at keepers going forward and the teams that have decisions to make. Pops and Blair finish last and second to last in the Dynasty League and talk strategy going in to next season. We get a hockey update with Minnesota and Columbus the two hottest teams in the NHL. Pops gives us a recap of the playoff picture right now and an updated Stanley Cup pick. We Got Beef this week, Pops goes after Richard Sherman again for his out cry over a journalist asking tough questions. For Blair, Bill Belicheck sits and cuts players for missing meetings and trades players for not loving football but signs Michael Floyd after a ridiculous BAC.
Duke University and Team USA Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski, better known as Coach K, may be the most decorated basketball coach in the history of the game, but he never forgets where he came from. Coach K shares stories with Chuck about growing up in Chicago and how it developed the foundation of where he is today. Krzyzewski also talks coaching on the collegiate level and for the Olympics leading Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler.
Duke and U.S. National Coach Mike Krzyzewski joins JJ Redick on The Vertical Podcast. Krzyzewski and Redick discus their shared times and relationship together, the vast differences in coaching different skill levels of Duke teams through the years and the issue of whether players should get paid on the NCAA level. Redick and Krzyzewski talked about the coach's time as the U.S. National coach and if that experience has played a part in filling the void of having never taken the leap to coach in the NBA. Krzyzewski talked about his experiences coaching multiple Olympic and World Championship teams and what he has learned coaching the best players in the world. Learn more about your ad choices.
