Jim is one of the leading authorities on West Coast golf in Scotland, and the various nine hole / honesty box courses that seem to have been walked into existence over recent centuries. For this week's Open Country, Helen Mark is in East Lothian in Scotland to revel in the beauty of the winter landscape. On the outskirts of Haddington, wildlife artist Darren Woodhead is ensconced in a hedgerow at dawn. Winter is his favourite time of year to paint; all his painting is done outside, sitting on the ground. He relishes the way in which the elements alter the way water-colours behave on the paper, creating patterns as the paint starts to freeze. Further east on the coast, Helen walks down onto one of the Dunbar beaches known locally as ‘Eye Cave Beach'. Land artist, James Craig, is engaged in the meditative art of stone stacking, at one with his surroundings, racing the rising tide. James organises the annual European Stone Stacking Championships here and tells Helen that his family has had a connection with the stones and the coastline for generations. On her final stop, Helen travels north-west to the sweeping sands of Gullane beach. Emily Hogarth takes inspiration from her daily walks across the wide open bay for her papercut art designs. Her work seeks to make the everyday magical, and she tells Helen there's nothing like winter in this part of Scotland to heighten her senses. Produced by Beatrice Fenton

After wrapping up his first visit to Scotland a couple of weeks ago, Andy Johnson is ready to relive it with two podcasts recapping the trip. In this first installment, he and Garrett Morrison start with an in-depth discussion of Muirfield, the site of this week's AIG Women's Open. They touch on the history of the course, standout holes, and what to watch for at the tournament. Andy and Garrett then discuss the wealth of quality golf at Gullane Golf Club and an evening for the memory books at Elie. Look for part 2—which will cover North Berwick, the Old Course, Kilspindie, and Dunbar—in the coming weeks. Read more about Andy's lunch and afternoon round at Muirfield in his first Scotland journal.
In Part 2 of this podcast about the greatest buddies trip happening in and around the playing of the 150th Open Championship, the Manning brothers, Eric Church and several others continue their romp around the linksland of the UK, immersing themselves in the culture and traditions at some of the best golf courses in the world. From North Berwick to Gullane, Muirfield and Royal County Down, Eli Manning shares his wine and gets heat for ordering fish, Cooper Manning gets out of the robe but gets in red knee-high socks after Muirfield's “proper” lunch, and a jet-lagged Eric Church is inspired to write a song, which he's kind enough to share with us at the end of the adventure. More insider info, course reviews and reflections throughout this oral history of a trip that was a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” for a special group of friends.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Armistice in 1918 might have brought an end to the violence. But for many families it did not mean the end of the story. In 1918 the whereabouts of more than half a million British soldiers alone remained unknown. These were often very young people, drawn from all walks of life, right across Britain. They were people who had simply vanished into the battlefields. In this episode Robert Sackville-West takes us back to the desperate days of the First World War a century ago. He shows us how Britons – from Rudyard Kipling to E.M. Forster – confronted the distressing situations they found themselves in, and how the bereaved attempted to come to terms with their loss. As ever, much, much more about this episode is to be found at our website tttpodcast.com. Robert Sackville-West is a writer and he runs the Sackville family's interests at Knole, the house in Kent where his family have lived for the past 400 years. For this chat I was joined by Mike Mackie, Mike Spink and Euan who are all part of the Gullane Athletic Football program. This was a special one for me as I am sure like a lot of people, there is no place like home. Gullane means a lot to me and looking back now at growing up it's a one of those special places that you are lucky to be a part of. The community feel to it just brings something special to the place. Having grown up with a lot of family members volunteering in the village to put events on for the youth every year I always had the urge to give something back to kids myself and venturing into coaching for 8 years was the beginning of that. These guys, and especially Mike Mackie, created a Football program for boys and girls to be a part of, building a community club and adding huge value to Gullane. All volunteers and giving their spare time to help out the youth. It's a great conversation on how they fell into Football as kids themselves, moving into the journey to build up the program from scratch and how they continue to grow it and work with the kids. During the conversation there may be a reference made too limited heading drills for the kids, this is only for those aged 12 and above. There are no heading drills for kids aged 12 and under. If you see this and you are someone from Gullane, or even if you listen and enjoy it, it would be great if you could share it and spread what these guys are doing around the area. Song choice for the feel of this podcast: Diamonds in the Mud by Gerry Cinnamon. I've been all round the world, but there's nowhere compares to my home-town. Sit back. Relax. Pour yourself a drink and enjoy the conversation.
To coincide with the second part of our Tour film from Scotland on YouTube, we’ve got this Tour memories podcast from our trip to East Lothian, including Renaissance, Gullane, Muirfield, Kilspindie and Musselburgh Old.

The LPGA heads to Scotland for the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club this week. We caught up with Brittany Lincicome and got the low down on what the PGA TOUR experience was like. She talks about the differences between playing on the LPGA and the PGA, if she'd ever do it again, who should be the next LPGA pro to play in a PGA event and if she would make the cut if given ten cracks. Since the LPGA is in the home of golf this week, we caught up with Scotland's own Catriona Matthew, who will captain Team Europe at the 2019 Solheim Cup. Matthew started playing at Gullane as a 12 year old and is a member of the course to this day. The interview touches on links style golf, playing two weeks after the men and what she thinks the winning score will be. For our roundtable segment, the LPGA's Chief Communications and Tour Operations Officer Heather Daly Donofrio, who played on the LPGA, joined to discuss the impact of Brittany on the PGA, the future of an LPGA-PGA mixed event and the looming fourth major of the year.
