In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with famed artists D. Arthur Wilson and Lisa Wilson of Wilson Signature Collection Fine Art Gallery. We talk about how they both got started on their art journey and the origin of Rhupert by D. Arthur. More about D. Arthur Willson Embarking in the fourth decade on his artistic journey, D. Arthur Wilson constantly marvels at the adventure his life has become.   Born and raised near Dayton, Ohio and the son of an artist, his self-taught career began at the tender age of three with his first painting.  It is appropriate to assume that the wild heart of the artist wandered throughout a series of artistic styles before settling with his passion and self-defined style of “Wild Expressionism”. Moving from coast to coast as a quick sketch portrait artist allowed Wilson to explore the people and places that would eventually lead him to that first painting in his definitive style: the inaugural tiger, up close and personal that sold while on the easel before its completion. Since then, Wilson has created thousands of originals that capture the souls of the exotic, alluring beasts.  Rendered on European Suede Mat Board with specific application of pastel, Conte' crayon and charcoal, each is a masterpiece for generations to appreciate. Wilson's passion is not only for the wild menagerie that he paints, but for the preservation and conservation efforts as well.  His affiliations include Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, Tippi Hedron's Shambala Preserve, SEE-North Raptor Education and Rehabilitation Center, The Digit Fund, Mission Wolf, Nebraska Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Henry Doorly Zoo, Denver Zoo, Little Rock Zoo, Cheetah Conservation Fund, and is included in Who's Who in America.  Wilson's wild menagerie spans the globe with private and corporate collections around the world, and one animal in particular rose to the surface as his own character over a decade ago.  "Rhupert the Ostrich" emerged as D. Arthur's Wacky Philosopher and Lovable Icon and has collectors in all 50 states as well as numerous countries.  Rhupert's pure and positive message is one that Wilson lives on a daily basis:  "Be Yourself".  and in the words of Oscar Wilde, "Life Is Too Important To Be Taken Seriously".  Rhupert is a metaphor about the Human Condition, always reminding us to simply Be Ourselves, because quite frankly, everyone else is already taken! Wilson states:  “One of the most challenging undertakings a person can face, is to find out who you are, be who you are and then share who you are”. More about Lisa Wilson “…a dramatic blend of levity and profound depth, balanced with sensitivity and passion…”  This describes Abstract Expressionist, Lisa, to those who know her, and those who don't …yet.   An artist for most of her life, her definitive style of Expressionism evolved from her experience, passion and love of life the beauty they have offered.  Each dramatic work of art is a prayer; an offering surrendered in a spirit of innocent play and exploration.  A  Meditation…  Rendered in oil, acrylic, sculpting mediums and a multitude of color, on board, gold leaf or fine art acrylic, each Masterpiece begins to breathe.   With passionate relief, its topography unveils itself in a process upwards.    A journey of the soul, this artistic adventure has produced extraordinary images that evoke a primal reaction from Lisa's audience, collectors coast to coast and abroad, stirring their hearts and sparking the imagination. Contemporary, yet soulfully introspective, one needs only to pause and let her paintings speak;  to quiet their souls for just this moment, communicate in the language of the heart. An only child, she was fortunate to have endless artistic influences in her life that perpetuated a steady creative flow, beginning with the inspiration of her mother, an accomplished vocalist; her encouragement directly affected Lisa's ability to push through, discover, and find  her creative self.  As a result, Lisa  would spend hours creating, drawing, painting and immerse herself in art of every form.   An accomplished dancer, musician and vocalist, Lisa allowed the creative force to come forth and to flourish.   The joy of her family, the thrill experienced from raising her sons, living throughout the country, and experiencing the different rhythms of people have also been a major contributor to her perception and presentation of her art.    As a result, Lisa's paintings grace  homes and corporations internationally and throughout the country. "Art is in the perception; and my art would be shallow without the tapestry of love and relationships that make my life so rich— thus contributing to the final outcome on the canvas.”   Website:  https://artgonewildstudios.comGallery Website:  https://www.wilsonsignaturecollection.com/ Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/wilson_signature_collection/

Howie's Letter to Barbara Fisher (an Antle escapee)    Barbara I have been thinking about what you said about a writer/reporter you could trust and who was skilled enough to get the story published in a way that would hopefully discourage other young women from being lured into this.  One came to mind this week.   Sharon Guynup is the writer who exposed the horrible Tiger Temple in Thailand. She is familiar with tiger issues and not afraid to take on something controversial. She has worked with National Geographic and has the reputation to get published.   She is not associated with us in any way, but we have met her a few times and she is speaking about the Tiger Temple work at a conference we are heading to tomorrow, so we will see her.  If you still think that is a direction you might want to pursue and would like to have an initial informal conversation with her I can run that by her.  Her interest and the timing might depend on how consumed she is with whatever she is working on now, but I think she would be very up front about that.   Separately there is one thing I forgot to ask you about when we talked on the phone but was reminded when I peeked at your Facebook page.  (I'm not much of a Facebook user.

Maya is a sweet, loving, wonderful girl. The decision to give her up was a very hard one. I love her very much and thought this was the best decision for her.  I have been having some health issues and had to make the hard decision. I am having knee surgery next month and then depending on how that goes will get the other knee done soon.   I have known of your facility for a long time. I met your late husband many many years ago at Woods and Waters (Wildlife Auction). I know you have a beautiful place and take wonderful care of your animals there. I know that you have a great love for all animals. I know Maya will be well taken care of  and loved.   Maya was born March 19, 1999.  I had her from a week old and bottle fed her. She was used in educational programs for the first couple years she would go to schools with me. She always loved visitors at my home and would greet them with enthusiasm and purrs. She loves to be scratched around her face and under her chin.   I will check out the video, Thank you so much for giving her a great new home. The Florida weather will be so good for her in her old age. I would love to visit one day, it would give me a good excuse to go to FL for some warm weather.  Thank you,  Maryann Nash. Again thank you so very much.   Omaha Zoo Press Release for Manny & Nat   Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium continuously strives to improve the lives of the animals it cares for. This dedication is illustrated by the dramatic change to the Zoo's grounds when African Grasslands opened in spring 2016. The area's large, open habitats with natural barriers as well as holding spaces with improved buildings and infrastructure allow for better animal care, setting the new standard for the institution. This evolution is in line with developing research in the field of animal welfare and trends in the science of behavior.   Currently, the Zoo is constructing a new Asian Highlands area. The Amur tigers will move from the existing cat house, comprised of smaller, moated exhibits, to 18,500 square feet of outdoor natural habitat space, including 2,300 square feet of off-habitat area. This is just one example of how the Zoo's new area will benefit the animals.   As part of the Zoo's master plan, an expansion of its North American habitat will include a new sea lion pool. The sea lions currently live in an original community swimming pool that was built in 1916, and later refurbished to house these marine mammals. The new North American area could potentially be built where the big cat house and moated bear habitats currently exist. Creating a larger, more natural area for the sea lions is another example of how the Zoo strives to improve its care standards.   For progress like this to occur, some of the current exhibits, such as the sea lion pool, which is no longer representative of an optimal environment for the species, need to be replaced. The Zoo has been working diligently to provide new and appropriate homes for the animals that remain in those areas. The Zoo typically works with other institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), as assisting other accredited facilities is standard practice.   However, as most AZA-accredited zoos are also trying to provide larger, more optimal environments for their animals, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has also looked to professional facilities to aid in providing the best long-term options for these Zoo residents. Three well-known facilities, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), immediately stepped up and offered to provide permanent homes for three of the Zoo's big cats. It was decided that Payson the white Bengal tiger, Manny the jaguar and Nat the Amur leopard will find new homes at two sanctuaries.   They will continue to receive professional care for the rest of their lives in spacious new habitats.   This type of collaboration between an AZA-accredited zoo and a GFAS-accredited sanctuary is not as common as similar facilities working within their own networks.   Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is happy to have this opportunity to work with new teams that also maintain high standards of animal care.   Payson the white Bengal tiger will find her new home at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This 459-acre sanctuary is dedicated to providing a progressive, well-managed home for species such as big cats and bears. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has a strong professional history with TCWR. TCWR has built a strong intern training and development program to aid in the care of their animals.   Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and Wildlife Safari Park, which is operated by the Zoo, are proud to have three full-time keepers within its staff that were trained at TCWR. Payson will have a large outdoor habitat and a quality life with her new family of professional caregivers.   Nat the Amur leopard and Manny the jaguar are both traveling to the Big Cat Rescue (BCR) near Tampa, Florida. BCR is specialized in providing safe, enriched homes for big cats since 1992 and has rescued more than 250 exotic cats. Their sanctuary is 69 acres and is currently home to about 60 exotic cats. They are the largest licensed rehab facility in the state of Florida for wild native bobcats. The sanctuary also has a strong intern development program with a focus on training carnivore care specialists who are represented in facilities across the country.   Both TCWR and BCR are actively involved in improving legislation to address issues that impact big cats and other animals that suffer from trade and human impact/conflict.   The moves to their new homes will provide well-managed professional care and strong relationships between sanctuary staff and the cats.   Visitors that know and love these cats will still have the opportunity to follow their progress at their respective new homes by following the social media pages, websites and newsletters for each sanctuary.   (Photo credits: Ryan Whisney and Corissa Mangus, senior keepers – Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium)   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  These are my views and opinions. Ari and Chris are joined by frequent podcast emailer Kaitlyn Wiktor! After chatting with Kait about the journey to her current position as Manager of Behavioral Husbandry and Welfare at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, we dive into a discussion about the mentors who've inspired and supported us, the way that those that we've taught have become our teachers, and the excitement (and thrilling discomfort) of becoming peers with the people who we used to look up to. We also chat about reviews for the show and finally get around to an email from Hardy Kern sharing a personal moment of awe. Thanks Hardy, and big thanks for Kait for joining us for the awesome discussion! Do you have a question or something you'd like us to discuss on a future episode? This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, July 22. The chance for rain has passed, but what remains is heat and humidity. According to the National Weather Service, it will be mostly sunny and humid Thursday with a high near 89 degrees. Adding to this will be hazy skies Thursday night and Friday morning as the smoke from several west coast wildfires is reaching midwestern states. A teenage girl who took advanced classes and played on her high school basketball team was found dead this week with a bullet wound in a crashed car she had borrowed while visiting her older sister in Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids police on Wednesday identified Tyliyah Whitis, 15, of Peoria, Ill, as the teen who was discovered Tuesday morning in the one-car crash outside the Hawthorne Hills apartment complex in the 2200 block of C Street SW. Police said Whitis had been shot at least once and the vehicle had sustained significant damage. Cedar Rapids public safety spokesperson Greg Buelow said the cause and manner of death has not yet been determined — that will come from the State Medical Examiner's Office following an autopsy. But police are investigating the death as a homicide. Whitis's sister, T'yanna Nesby, told the Gazette that Whitis was a straight A student back in Peoria, who worked two jobs and wanted to one day start her own business. Forty Iowans, including some from the Cedar Rapids area, had to undergo treatment for rabies after they were potentially in contact with a rabid bat at a zoo in Omaha. More than 180 individuals were advised to receive the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, which contains the rabies vaccine, after a wild bat was found near a person attending one of the Henry Doorly Zoo's multiple overnight campouts at the aquarium earlier this month. A total of 186 overnight campers, including youth and adult groups, were contacted by the Nebraska public health department, the https://omaha.com/news/local/186-overnight-campers-at-omaha-zoo-potentially-exposed-to-rabid-bat-found-in-aquarium/article_2be933ac-e0ec-11eb-8d6a-3f93e96f2121.html (Omaha World-Herald reported). Public health officials in Nebraska recommended all campers who stayed at the zoo overnight June 29, June 30, July 2 and July 3 receive the treatment. As it promised, University of Iowa Health Care plans to reward more than 12,000 employees it required over the last year to either forfeit raises, absorb pay cuts, shed earned vacation time or take unpaid leave to ease its budget woes in the worst throes of COVID-19. The one-time lump sum payments — coming Sept. 1 if approved next week by the Board of Regents — will vary in amount depending on the eligible worker's base salary as of June 30, 2021, according to documents made public this week.  In total, UIHC expects to pay out $26.6 million to over 12,000 eligible employees based on a projected hospital operating margin of over 7 percent for the budget year that ended June 30.  Luka Garza has been selected as the 2020-21 Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year, the league announced Wednesday. Garza is the fifth Hawkeye chosen as the male winner in the past 35 years, joining wrestlers Brent Metcalf (2008), Barry Davis (1985) and Ed Banach (1983), as well as football player Chuck Long (1986).
