So let's go, and we'll be starting with the witchy-poos! Although it is a pleasant expanse of rolling fields today, the area of what is now known as Wallaceburg, Ontario, was once a wild, untamed land, first settled in 1804 by the brave souls who risked their lives to carve out an existence along the rugged wilderness of the Snye River. The small settlement that would become Wallaceburg was called the Baldoon settlement, tucked away in this forbidding realm of harsh winters and perched on the edge of unexplored wilds as far as the eye could see. It was to this fierce place that a farmer named John McDonald and his family came in 1829 from Scotland to try and make a new life for themselves, but their story would go on to become one of the greatest tales of the paranormal in Ontario history, their dream turned to a nightmare.

Often inexplicable and baffling, these curiosities demonstrate that, far from being primitives, these ancients often had access to technology and skills far ahead of their times. But some incredible artifacts, structures, and sites discovered around the world seem to suggest that this knowledge may have passed even beyond that, to reach out into the world of science fiction and fantasy and hint at a possible ability to step through doorways in order to traverse time and space or to somehow move through dimensions or worlds.

It is a place that has drawn the curiosity and study of archeologists and indeed the public for years, yet for all we have learned of this enigmatic place over the centuries there are still many secrets buried here in the desert sands, ensconced with mystery and as unknown as they always have been. One of these is an alleged network of subterranean tunnels and chambers whispered of in ancient and modern texts and forgotten for centuries, which are said to hold vast troves of lost knowledge and secrets and, if they exist, could change how we view history itself.

One such island is the magical vanishing island of Hildaland in the seas around Orkney, the group of islands situated off the north coast of Scotland.

Fought from 1861 to 1865, it was a fierce, gruesome struggle fought between the Union armies of the north and the Confederate armies of the southern states, in which hung the balance the survival of the Union, the secession of the eleven states of the Confederacy, the direction of the United States, and the future of slavery in America.  The aftermath of the war would see slavery ended, the infrastructure of the South in ruins, and over 750,000 dead, and is by far the deadliest war in the history of the United States. Yet among all of the grim history of battles and death that hangs over the Civil War like a dark specter, there are scattered throughout curious tales of the strange, and it seems that there was more than just the enemy lurking about the battlefields of the era. Out of the war come stories of bizarre beasts that prowled through the wilderness to evoke curiosity, bafflement, and indeed fear in the bedraggled troops of both sides. Mostly lost to the mists of time, these perplexing accounts are a bizarre look into another, stranger facet of America's bloodiest war.

Whether it be land, the ocean, or space, we have an innate sense of wonder about our world and an instinctual desire to prod at its boundaries, an irresistible need to know what lies over the next hill, around the next wave, and indeed beyond the next planet. It is this spirit of exploration that thrums at the heart of our civilization, an engine of enlightenment that has propelled the advancement of human achievement since time unremembered. In the annals of great explorers, there have been those who were successful in their endeavors to expand our world, and then there have been others who, while perhaps having grand goals, have disappeared into the wilds of the world never to return. In many cases, these lost expeditions and the circumstances of their doom have become enduring mysteries every bit as compelling as the things they had hoped to discover. One such case of an ambitious expedition that has vanished into the realm of mystery is of a exploration team known as the Franklin expedition, which in 1845 sailed from England into the great northern cold at the edges of our mapped world only to never be heard from again.

But, why do some assassins earn our admiration, even affection, while others remain defamed and deviant in the popular imagination? Today's episode tells the story of the Hashshashin, as one Ismaili Shia sect became known when word of their purported use of hashish and opium circulated around the Mediterranean. Etymologists tell us that the work “assassin” is derived from “Hashshashin” because the group became so universally defamed for their targeted killings that their name became synonymous with political murder. Today we will sort through the most enduring legends of the Hashshashin, establish their accuracy, and demonstrate how the sensationalized stories of one medieval Ismaili sect shaped the “Western” consciousness forever.  Secret societies are mysterious enough, but sometimes they go beyond merely enigmatic, spooky organizations and gather a dark reputation as being a lethal force to be reckoned with, reaching out to deal death to those who oppose them. Such is the story of a shadowy secret order of assassins which was formed in ancient Persia and which kept the region under the grip of terror for over a century. Always lurking in the shadows, they could be anyone, and they were always ready to pounce, patiently waiting for word from their master to bloom outwards from the darkness and shadows to deliver death at a moment's notice. Let us delve into some of the murky history of one of the most secretive and lethal secret orders of the ancient world and indeed history as a whole.

In Part 2 of the Historical Oddities series, we uncover two strange pieces of history. In the 1970's when the crew of the Six Million Dollar Man was shooting an episode inside a funhouse in Long Beach, California, they accidentally stumbled upon something unexpected…the dead, mummified body of the outlaw Elmer McCurdy. Elmer had been shot dead by a Sherriff's posse the better part of a century before, so what was his corpse doing hanging from the rafters of a funhouse? Today we examine his incredible true story. Next, we go across the pond and back again to find out how just what the London Bridge is doing in the Arizona desert. Built after the London Bridge of nursery rhyme fame was demolished and before the bridge that now stands over the Thames, this 19th century granite London Bridge was headed for the junkyard until the city of London auctioned it off to an eccentric American millionaire. Tune in to hear how this iconic English landmark became the world's most expensive souvenir.

Today we begin with Frank Hayes, an unstoppable jockey, and Sweet Kiss, a bay mare no one was betting on. She and her jockey would make history with one race—but not because of their victory. Then we skip across the pond to find the unsinkable Violet Jessop, a woman who survived three of the 20th century's most harrowing shipwrecks. South Africa is our last stop where we find Jack the Baboon who was better at his job working for the Cape Town Port Elizabeth Railway service than most of us are today. Plug in and get weird!
