This is the festival celebrating the time of year when “the summer goes to rest”. It was an agricultural festival and a time for “stock-taking” before the winter. Samhain was also, like we would expect in an origin of Halloween, a time of “supernatural intensity” where the force of darkness and decay were said to be abroad, spilling out from sidh, the ancient mounds or barrows of the countryside”.  At this time of year the Celtic people would build a large bonfire in the hope that it would please the gods and help the regenerative agricultural process. This foundation in an agricultural based festival is still visible today where in many agricultural based communities “the intervention of masks may help ensure that the crops grow well”. For the Celts this time of year held great symbolic significance, and it was said that many Mythic kings and heroes died on Samhain.

As she waited in the cold, her attention was drawn to a plump young girl who stood a short distance from her. The girl, who couldn't have been more than ten, was wearing a distinctive red coat with a hood trimmed in black fur. As further protection against the cold, she wore a brown rabbit-fur cap and a woollen scarf. What attracted Svetlana's attention wasn't so much the girl or her clothing but the man she was with. He was a tall, grey-haired man in his forties wearing a long black overcoat and carrying a shopping bag. The man had a long face and nose and wore oversized glasses. It wasn't his appearance that made her suspicious, it was the way the man was looking at the young girl and whispering to her.

When he looked about him again, he saw that he was getting farther from his starting place. The ground seemed to move up and down under his feet, and it was very soft. Traffic was moving well out of San Antonio, Texas, and nothing was amiss. That was until suddenly and violently, a tan-colored Mercury Tracer swerved straight into the median. The car bounced for well over 1000ft, became airborne, and then smashed back down onto the highway. Yet still, it wasn't over. Landing correctly on its wheels, the vehicle continued to cruise down the road for miles before veering off to the right and smashing into a cluster of trees. Approaching the scene on Johns Road, Sheriff's Department deputies found the driver deceased, seemingly from massive head injuries. Wearing full military fatigues, he would later be named as Air Force colonel Phillip Shue, aged 54. However, doubts about what had truly happened began to be raised right there at the scene. Investigators noted that there was no wallet or ID in the vehicle, and a deep wound to the chest didn't seem to have been caused by anything in the crash. Another look would reveal that Shue's left pinky finger had been severed, both nipples had been removed, and there were clear signs his wrists and ankles had been tied with duct tape.

Now seen as early evidence of prehistoric worship, the hilltop site was previously shunned by researchers as nothing more than a medieval cemetery. Six miles from Urfa, an ancient city in southeastern Turkey, Klaus Schmidt has made one of the most startling archaeological discoveries of our time: massive carved stones about 11,000 years old, crafted and arranged by prehistoric people who had not yet developed metal tools or even pottery. The megaliths predate Stonehenge by some 6,000 years. The place is called Göbekli Tepe, and Schmidt, a German archaeologist who has been working here more than a decade, is convinced it's the site of the world's oldest temple.

When he withdrew from his residence among men he left a son on the uplands of the district of North Kona, and a daughter on the seashore of the same district. Elizabeth Figg, also known as Ann Phillips, was found with her body slumped against a small willow tree. She had been strangled to death. The victim also had scratches on her throat and her clothing had been ripped open. It was also stated that her underwear and shoes were missing, as well as her purse. Despite an extensive search of the area, these items were not found. The proprietor of a nearby public house called The Ship stated he and his wife had seen a car parked up in the area around 5 minutes past midnight. Not long after the driver turned off the headlights of the car the couple claimed to have heard a woman's scream, sadly they didn't investigate further. Figgs boyfriend, Fenton Ward, was an early suspect in the murder. He was known to beat Figg on occasion and was also known to act as her pimp. However, Ward was soon ruled out of the murder after police inquiries. Due to the location in which the body was found, a known site where sex workers would take their client and the missing items the police came up with another theory. They believed Figg had been murdered in a client's car after removing the missing items to have sex and the items had been left in the car.

Naught existed save the primeval ocean, Mommu Tiawath, from whose fertile depths came every living thing. Not were the waters distributed, as in the days of man, into sea, river or lake, but all were confined together in one vast and bottomless abyss. Neither did god or man exist: their names were unknown and their destinies undetermined. The future was as dark as the gloom which lay over the mighty gulf of chaos. Nothing had been designed or debated concerning it.  But there came a stirring in the darkness and the great gods arose. First came Lahmu and Lahame; and many epochs later, Ansar and Kisar, component parts of whose names signify 'Host of Heaven' and 'Host of Earth.' These latter names we may perhaps accept as symbolical of the spirits of heaven and of earth respectively. Many days afterward came forth their son Anu, god of the heavens.

Amongst the many Scottish myths associated with King Arthur is the story of Canonbie Dick, the northernmost version of the king under the mountain folklore motif in Britain.

These attacks took place in a vast territory which today covers the French areas of Lozère, Cantal and Haute-Loire. From the outset, these events will take on a considerable scale due to international media coverage without equal at the time! Engravings of the Beast are published everywhere, from Paris to San Francisco! This territory does not play a major role in the economic life of the Kingdom of France, so why such an impact? Gévaudan is a fairly poor breeding ground. The north of Gévaudan where the Beast rages is separated between the Aubrac plateau and the Margeride Mountains. Far from being as wooded as today, this vast territory is made up of moors and grazing meadows punctuated by groves and a few thin forests. This rough country fueled the imagination of the chroniclers of the time. But it is the press that explains the scope of this case.

Initially, the country rallied in a wave of patriotism and vowed revenge on the perpetrators. But critics said that the government was using the terrorist threat as an excuse to curtail civil liberties. They warned that aggressive action against the terrorists would only provoke more violence and was harming America's reputation in Europe. And some charged that the president was just a puppet and the decisions were really being made by a handful of government officials who lied and twisted intelligence reports to carry out their repressive agenda. Supporters of the government policy countered that these critics were aiding and abetting the enemy while posing as champions of free speech. Strong measures were needed to crush a dangerous enemy, not naïve and craven appeasement. The year was 1920. Thursday, September 16, 1920

He took the throne after the assassination of the boy-king Labashi-Marduk, who was murdered in a conspiracy only nine months after his inauguration. It is not known whether Nabonidus played a role in his death, but he was chosen as the new king soon after.  During many years of his kingship, Nabonidus was absent at the Arabian oasis of Tayma. The reasons for his long absence remain a matter of controversy, with theories ranging from illness, to madness, to an interest in religious archaeology. The fall of an empire in antiquity was usually the result of complex, interconnected factors that lay beyond the scope of any one person's control. Nonetheless, traumatized contemporaries and later historians alike have often laid the fault at the feet of a single individual. The enigmatic Neo-Babylonian king Nabonidus seemed destined for just such a fate after the Persian armies of Cyrus the Great marched through Babylon's gates in October 539 B.C.

Arizona, and in particular this area is rather well-known for a high concentration of UFO sightings and for the mysterious energy vortices said to dot the landscape here, where earth energies crackle and which are believed to confer all manner of health benefits, as well as said to aid in meditation and self-reflection.  It is largely because of these alleged magical vortices that a bustling business of spiritual healing tours and metaphysical medicine outfits have sprung up here, and one can already see that Sedona is already a rather strange and unique place in an already rather unique and strange state. However Sedona is also the home to a very unusual patch of land where there have long been reported all manner of high strangeness, from UFOs, to ghosts, to dinosaurs, and more.
