Carole talks to Claire German, CEO of Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, on the eve of this year's design showcase, WOW!house, an immersive experience where you can see, touch and feel fabulous spaces created by world-leading interior designers. Claire says, 'When people walk in I wanted them to go "wow", so that's why I thought calling it WOW!house was perfect; and to this day, I watch people arrive and walk in and the first thing they say is "wow", so my dreams have come true.' The event is open from 2 June to 2 July at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour.Sponsored by Aqualisa Showers.
Exploring what it means to be the CEO with Claire German, CEO of Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. What does it mean? How does it work well? How do you know that you are ready to hire a CEO?Welcome to Up With The Lark And, a podcast for creative entpreneurs hosted by me Calandre Orton. Up With The Lark is all about the intersection of creativity and commerce, making and profit, designing and selling. It is a space filled with potential and ideas and contradicitions and challenges. Today's guest personifies this particular adventure. Claire German is the CEO of Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. This is a place deeply significant in the world of interior design - it is a space for display, for conversation, for gathering, for selling and for community. Claire has been in this role since 2010 and has captained the ship to new shores - Focus, London Design Week and the WOW!house exhibition to name a few. At the recent press launch of the WOW!house 2026, I asked guests what their experience and perception of Claire was. The answer was clear - this is a lady who has big ideas and then makes them happen with great communication, energy and warmth. Easy to have great ideas but it's powerful to make them happen. And so, it is clear that we all have a lot to learn from Claire.Today we are going to explore a specific theme - that of the role of CEO. Whether you are at your kitchen table alone, managing a small team of freelancers or leading a hierarchy of employees, the skills of a CEO are pertinent. We will consider Claire's journey to the role, what her job actually entails, the specific experience of leading a creative business, enacting her vision, leading a team and what the future holds. We are all eagerly anticipating WOW!house 2026 which will run from 2nd June until the 2nd July so what better time to take a look at the phenomenon that is WOW!house. From a standing start in 2022, WOW!house has, in 5 short years, grown to become the UK's premier showcase for luxury interior design talent and style. Going way beyond the mere setting of trends, WOW!house has come to embody the aspirational direction of travel for the whole UK prime residential market. But how did it all begin? Where did the original inspiration for the event come from? And, how has it developed year on year to become the most hotly anticipated event in the London Interior Design Calendar? For this show, recorded in front of a live audience of designers in the Design Club at the Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, Susie and Jeff are joined by Durgesh Sinh from returning WOW!house sponsor, Nucleus AV, acclaimed interior designer and WOWzer, Benedict Foley, and the woman who launched WOW!house, CEO of the Design Centre, Claire German. Several multinational electronics and manufacturing companies including Apple's supplier Pegatron and Korean auto giant Hyundai have committed to large investments in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, but first, a couple of other headlines that caught my attention. The US Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday ordered the grounding and immediate inspection of about 171 Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft worldwide after a mid-flight emergency late Friday involving a plane operated by Alaska Airlines, NPR reports. The US aviation regulator announced this order after an Alaska Airlines flight was forced to abruptly land in Portland, Oregon after a door plug blew out in midair, leaving a hole in the aircraft next to two unoccupied seats. Unicommerce eSolutions Limited, a software provider to ecommerce companies for transaction processing, has filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus with India's capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board, seeking an IPO. The proposed listing comprises of an offer for sale aggregating up to about 29.84 million equity shares of face value of Rs. 1. This includes up to 11.46 million shares by Unicommerce's promoter AceVector Limited (formerly known as Snapdeal Limited), up to about 2.21 million shares by B2 Capital Partners and up to about 16.17 million shares by SB Investment Holdings (UK) Limited. One thing today In one thing today, Apple suppliers Tata Electronics and Pegatron, and automaker Hyundai Motors have signed investment pacts worth more than $4.39 billion with the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Reuters reports, citing a statement from the state government at a global investor summit. Industry analysts estimate India could account for as much as a third of Apple's iPhone production in the coming years, as the tech giant steps up its efforts to reduce dependence on China. Apple is also looking at India as its next big market, where it has seen quarterly records in sales over the last two years. Pegatron is setting up a second factory in India, Reuters notes, and the Tata Group, which last year began to assemble iPhones, has also purchased a factory on the outskirts of neighbouring Bengaluru from Wistron, another Apple supplier. Tata Electronics has committed to investing Rs. 12,080 crore for mobile phone assembly operations, the state government said during the signing of the agreements, according to Reuters. Taiwan's Pegatron expects to invest Rs. 1,000 crore to expand production, the government added. South Korean Auto giant Hyundai Motors plans to invest Rs. 6,180 crore, a part of which will go towards electric vehicle battery and car manufacturing. Vietnamese EV maker VinFast is setting up its first manufacturing facility in India and expects to invest up to $2 billion in Tamil Nadu, according to Reuters. The semiconductor giant Qualcomm yesterday, announced what it called a significant expansion in Chennai with a new facility for its design centre, with an investment of about Rs. 177 crore. The Design Centre is expected to generate jobs for up to 1,600 skilled professionals. It will specialize in wireless connectivity solutions, with a focus on innovations that complement Wi-Fi technologies. It will contribute to Qualcomm's global research and development in 5G cellular technology, Qualcomm said in a press release. Separately, Tata Power is exploring investments of up to Rs. 70,000 crore in Tamil Nadu over the next several years, including investments in some existing projects, the company's chief executive officer Praveer Sinha said at a press briefing at the investors meet, Reuters reports. And JSW Energy has announced plans to invest Rs. 12,000 crore to develop renewable energy projects.
A busy show this week with six guests covering LUNEX University, LMDDC's creative educational work and Hanna from SciLux. LUNEX University Prof Marcus Müller and Valeria Maglia are two members of staff who bring unique experiences to their teaching at LUNEX, a university for sport, health and management. Marcus spent 20 years in the corporate world before moving into academia. His experience in business has shaped his research into leadership, and how one needs to blend our 'private' life with 'work' life. Marcus believes in the ABC for employees: Autonomy, Belonging and Competency. With these three targets met, one can develop a work-force with resilient well-being. Naturally, there is a clear link between feeling good and productivity. Valeria (Vivi) Maglia is the Placement Coordinator and Clinical educator at Lunex University. Her background includes 14 years as a physiotherapist manager on Humanitarian Missions in war-torn and developing countries. Vivi speaks of the experiences gained during this humanitarian work and the difficulties of working on intense medical needs whilst living in confinement with other expats you don't know so well; all living and working in close proximity with no freedom of movement. The stress of the working conditions, compounded by weather and cultural shock, make for an almost unimaginable working environment, one that few of us gain access to as students. For this reason Valeria is working to give her students the opportunity to work in countries such as Somalia, Afghanistan and Rwanda, so that they can learn skills a teacher can never create for them in Luxembourg. Luxembourg Media and Digital Design Centre Thibaud Latour, CEO of LMDDC, alongside his colleagues Györgyi (Gira) Szakmar (Multimedia Design Manager) and Michalis Spyropoulos (Project and Partnership Manager) talk about the Luxembourg Media and Digital Design Centre. The team have ample skills to create effective B2B relationships where companies need help to create educational tools digitally. The way in which we learn and continue to learn in life is changing faster than our textbooks can keep pace with. And so LMDDC is there to help companies realise these projects. SciLux Hanna Siemaszko, SciLux Podcast Host and Science Communicator has a deep fascination with science and wants to share that via her podcast and other forms of interaction with the public. On Museum Night, 14 October, Hanna will be talking to visitors about the Moon at the Museum of Natural History at 6pm and 10pm. Despite previous claims that Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino's office had no idea that convicted killer Paul Bernardo was getting transferred to medium security, in fact, Mendicino's staff knew for three months that the transfer was going to happen. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on Mendicino to resign, though all the public safety minister is committing to is a new “policy directive” allowing for more information to be shared. Also, True North's Andrew Lawton weighs in on the Bell Media layoffs. Welcome to Episode 62 and a rather special follow up episode. Back in November 2020, I had the pleasure of speaking with Alexandra Dauley and Sophie Ashby co-founders of United in Design. United in Design is a charitable project working to tackle the lack of diversity in the design industries. The conversation that we had was honest and moving. It was focused on practical action. It was about hope. And today we see hope realised in that we are joined by Christine Omorere and Roshu Shreshtha. They are both former United in Design apprentices. They have recently worked on a very special project with Bernie de la Cuona, of de la Cuona, for the WOW!House at the Design Centre. We hear all about their backgrounds and the United in Design apprenticeship, how the collaboration with de la Cuona came about, the WOW!House and their plans for the future. Monday, 1 February 2021, 1 – 2pm Christian saint or Celtic goddess, Brigit has long been associated with the spring season, representing renewal, healing and fertility. But who was the enigmatic Brigit, Brigid or Bríg and what lessons does her legend offer us today? In the midst of a global pandemic which has shaken the world, can we find ways to generate hope from centuries old wisdom and tradition? Join us on the 1st of February for a conversation with Professor Katharine Simms, Dr Mary Condren, artist Rita Duffy, Early Career Researcher Nandini Gupta, and Trinity Long Room Hub Director, Professor Eve Patten. Rita Duffy is an artist in residence at the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Institute. Born in Belfast, Rita was awarded a B.A. from the Art & Design Centre and an M.A. in Fine Art at the University of Ulster. She was elected to Aosdana in 2017. She is one of Northern Ireland's groundbreaking artists who began her work concentrating primarily on the figurative/narrative tradition. Her art is often autobiographical, including themes and images of Irish identity, history and politics. Rita Duffy's work has grown and evolved but remains intensely personal with overtones of the surreal. Professor Katharine Simms Ph.D. was Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at Trinity College Dublin until her retirement in 2010. She has written three books, From Kings to Warlords (1987), Medieval Gaelic Sources (2009) and Gaelic Ulster in the Middle Ages (2020) as well as numerous articles on Gaelic politics and society in later medieval Ireland, including several on the role of women, and the later commentaries on Brehon law tracts. Dr. Mary Condren is a Visiting Research Fellow and teaches at the Centre for Gender and Women's Studies, in the School of Histories and Humanities, Trinity College Dublin. She is director of Woman Spirit Ireland and has organised and resourced Festivals of Brigit, in Ireland and North America, for over thirty years.
