You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that cap guns are illegal in Rhode Island? The law says No person shall sell or discharge any repeating toy pistol or any other toy device designed or used for the discharge of blank cartridges. Now, we turn our feature story…. Our state inaugurated a new Lt. Gov. this weekend when Sabina Matos was formally appointed this weekend. The public ceremony was held at noon on Sunday on the North Lawn of the State House. Matos is Rhode Island's 70th lieutenant governor, but the first person of color to serve in the post. Matos, 47, was previously sworn in at a small private ceremony on April 14. The Democrat is the former president of the Providence City Council and identifies as Afro-Latina. She was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the U.S. in 1994. She was first elected to the city council in 2010 and was voted president in 2019. Matos was handpicked by Gov. Daniel McKee and unanimously confirmed by the state Senate. McKee, as well as the state's entire congressional delegation attended the ceremony. Sabina marked the occasion by tweeting: “I was thinking this morning and realized that 27 years ago today, May 2, 1994, I started my first job at a factory in Queens NY. I had been in the US for only 3 days. At noon today, I will be sworn in (again) as the 70th Lt. Governor of Rhode Island. Serendipity.” For more on this story, and all things Southern Rhode Island, head over to westerlysun.com There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from the Ocean House in Westerly. They're looking for a floor sommelier. Ideally, you have experience and a sommelier certification and are great with people, and can be an ambassador for the club's standards. Pay is up $11.50-$30.00 per hour with tips. If you're interested and think you'd be a good fit for the role you can apply using the link in our episode description. https://www.indeed.com/l-Westerly,-RI-jobs.html?advn=9173240314393757&vjk=f736966246302b21 Today we're remembering the life of Steven T. Gencarella, of Annansis Street. Born in Westerly, he was the beloved son of the late Verna and Edward Gencarella. Steven was an expediter for Electric Boat in Groton. A lover of baseball, he was a stand-out player at Westerly High and he had also played in the Westerly Men's Softball League for years. Steven absolutely worshiped the NY Yankees and Thurman Munson was his idol! He also was a fan of the NY Giants, the NY Knicks and the NY Islanders. He leaves his two children, the mother of his children, three siblings, and three nephews. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Steven's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! After the devastating raid at Fort Mystic, the Pequot nation is left without allies as the English and their indigenous allies continue their campaign of collective punishment. Far to the south, the English colonies of Montserrat and Barbados establish their unique characteristics; Montserrat, an Irish island in an English Atlantic world; and Barbados, an economic engine powered by the enslavement of Africans. Our podcast today was recorded in front of a live audience on September 24, 2019 at The Wilma in Missoula, MT. 8 storytellers shared their true personal story on the theme “Leap of Faith”. Today we hear from three of those storytellers. Our first story comes to us from Steven T! Millhouse, who takes us on a journey walking form Missoula, MT to Los Angeles, CA, regaining a lost hope in humanity along the way. He calls his story “Homage for the Homeless”. Steven T! Millhouse was born in Bozeman but grew up in Missoula. He graduated from Sentinel Highschool, and the University of Montana. He is “MONTANA Through and Through.”  He would like to thank his Millhouse and Spaulding Families for their Love and support. Our next story comes to us from Jennie Pak who introduces us to her aspiring rock star son and allows us to walk through the labyrinth with her on a healing journey through grief. She calls her story ““Out of the Dark””. Jennie Pak was born and raised in Montana. After living up and down the West Coast, the family settled in Missoula in 1998.  Jennie works as a Senior Caregiver for Home Instead Senior Care. In her spare time, she is a living history presenter, traveling around to libraries, museums, schools and Senior residences, portraying women from Montanas’s wild west days. In our final story, Jaimie Jacoby and his crew help rescue a horse that has found its way to the wrong side of the Lochsa River during the height of whitewater season. Jaimie calls his story “Badger Crossing”.

Lynn Nichols Federal Tax Update Podcast August 20, 2018, edition Listen as Lynn Nichols provides commentary on 8 Items pertaining to current developments in U.S. tax law. This week’s topics include: Final Regs Provide Substantiation Rules for Charitable Contributions The IRS has issued final regulations on the substantiation and reporting rules for charitable contributions at various monetary thresholds and for donated clothing and household items. The final regs also address the new definitions of qualified appraisal and qualified appraiser for noncash contributions and recordkeeping requirements for all cash contributions. [T.D. 9836; 7/27/2018]    Tax Court Correctly Dismissed Employment Tax Liability Challenge The Eighth Circuit held that the Tax Court properly dismissed on jurisdictional grounds an attorney’s claim that he did not owe additional employment tax on payments he received as the sole owner and officer of an S corporation, finding that because there was no actual controversy involving a determination that he was an employee for FICA purposes, the Tax Court was deprived of jurisdiction. [Azarian, Martin S. P.A. v. Commissioner; CA 8; No. 17-2134; 7/27/2018]     Eighth Circuit Sides With IRS in Employment Tax Dispute Challenges to reasonable compensation determinations for S corporations must allege taxpayer employment issues for the Tax Court to have jurisdiction. [Tax Notes Today; 7/31/2018; Article by Eric Yauch]     Horse Breeding Organization Is Denied Exemption The IRS denied an organization's application for tax-exempt status because its primary activity, conducting a horse breeding program, does not further exempt purposes and the organization serves the private interests of horse breeders. [LTR 201830023; 5/1/2018; rel. 7/27/2018]   IRS Revokes Exempt Status of Social Horse Club The IRS revoked the tax-exempt status of a social club organized to promote interests in horses and horsemanship because its investment and non-member income exceeded the 35 percent threshold, and its non-member income exceeded the 15 percent threshold on a regular basis. [LTR 201830018; 1/11/2018; rel. 7/27/2018]      IRS Isn't Exercising Its Authority Over Unregulated Preparers The IRS failed to assess more than $121 million in preparer tax identification number penalties, despite evidence of “incompetent and unscrupulous” conduct by unregulated return preparers. [Tax Notes Today; 7/31/2018; Article by William Hoffman]   Tax Court Finds Individual’s Mary Kay Activity Wasn’t for Profit The Tax Court, sustaining accuracy-related penalties, held that an individual didn’t engage in her Mary Kay consulting activity for profit but attempted to shelter her taxable wage income by deducting otherwise nondeductible personal expenses, such as trips to Disney World and Europe, as business expenses. [Nix, Kimberly S. v. Commissioner; No. 4000-16; T.C. Memo. 2018-116; 7/30/2018]   Debate Over Parsonage Allowance Continues in Dueling Briefs Supporters of a 64-year-old tax break for clergy housing are continuing their fight to preserve it after a court declared it unconstitutional last fall. [Tax Notes Today; 8/1/2018; Article by Fred Stokeld]   Clergy Urge Court to Hold Rental Allowance Constitutional In a reply brief for the Seventh Circuit, a group of ministers and churches argued that section 107, which allows ministers to exclude from income a rental allowance paid as part of their compensation, is constitutional because it is an exemption and not a transfer of funds and because it applies the convenience-of-the-employer doctrine to ministers. [Annie L. Gaylor et al. v. Steven T. Mnuchin et al.; No. 18-1277; No. 18-1280; 7/30/2018]         Yacht Deductions Disallowed, but Penalties Deep-Sixed The Tax Court jettisoned a taxpayer’s claim that his sport fishing yacht deductions were marketing expenses but chose not to weigh him down with accuracy penalties. [Tax Notes Today; 8/3/2018; Article by Kristen Parillo]   Property Developer Fishing for Yacht Deductions Comes up Empty-Handed The Tax Court held that a Florida property developer wasn’t entitled to deduct expenses for a fishing yacht that he claimed was a marketing tool, finding that the expenses were for entertainment and he failed to provide substantiation. The court didn't impose accuracy-related penalties because the IRS failed to show supervisory approval. [Becnel, Damon R. v. Commissioner; No. 14707-14; T.C. Memo 2018-120; 8/2/2018]

During Mike's Course - Mike & Billy share a great email from one of their GTR listeners written about golf and life.Mike & Billy also interview Steven T. Ross about the Clearview Putter -No matter how well you read a putt, if you don't start the ball on the correct line, you won't make the putt. Like all golf strokes, if the golfer does not have the technique to line the shot up properly, it is difficult to make a good stroke and achieve your goal. The Clearview Putter allows you to concentrate on reading the green, and distance to stroke the ball based on the read.   Master the Most-Used Club in the Bag If you were among the top 10 putters on the PGA Tour this year you’d be using your putter for between 40 and 45% of your strokes per round. Now, apply that percentage to your average score and it’s easy to see how mastering the putting stroke could make a huge difference in lowering your score. 90% of golfers are not properly lined up to the hole or set up to the ball before they stroke a putt. Said another way, 90% of putts have virtually no chance of going in regardless of speed. It’s pretty hard to lower your score with the odds that stacked against you. Imagine a training aid that would teach you to line up and set up perfectly every time. www.clearviewputter.comMike & Billy announce Breakfast with the Pros at the Blacklake Golf Resort Saturday, March 26th.  GTRadio will be broadcasting live from the Blacklake Golf Resort with a panel of golf experts, breakfast is included, private golf instruction and golf clinics.  For more information or to sign up online click here.  Visit the Golf Talk Radio sponsors and tell them GTRadio sent you they help make the show possible! Slickstix.com, Avila Beach Golf Resort, Blacklake Golf Resort, Shore Cliff Lodge and Aramco Mortgage.  Visit Golftalkradio.com for the latest show information, contests, videos iPhone and Android Apps and more!
