The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) says farmers should be trained in basic maintenance of hedgerows and trees that overhang power and communications cabling. The ICMSA argues that in the event of another Storm Éowyn, this would reduced the likelihood of thousands being without power for days or even weeks. Denis Carroll is president of the ICMSA.

The Clare County Chair of the ICMSA insists the agricultural sector needs to re-examined in the upcoming budget, to secure the future of the sector. It follows the publication of a survey carried out by the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association and Agriland ahead of the National Ploughing Championships today, which found that eight in ten farmers believe a 'green agenda' is negatively impacting farmers' livelihoods. The Green Party has defended its policies, however, claiming there's no disconnect between the party and rural Ireland, and that it's continuing to deliver for farmers. Chair of the Clare branch of the ICMSA, Martin McMahon, has been telling Clare FM's Darragh O'Grady that farmers having to continuously take out loans is evidence that they're struggling financially.
The Chair of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association in Clare is urging co-ops to ensure dairy farmers are "properly paid" this month. The ICMSA is calling for the price of July milk to be increased to 45 cent per litre amid claims farmers' cashflow has "never been as tight". The most recent analysis from the ICMSA shows the median price paid to suppliers for milk at co-ops was just over 41 cent. O'Callaghan's Mills farmer Martin McMahon believes the vital contribution of dairy farmers must be acknowledged and they must be given their due.
Dr Elaine McGoff, Head of Advocacy, An Taisce, and Denis Drennan, President, ICMSA, debate the legal challenge over the Nitrates Action Programme.
A Clare farming representative insists no other sector would work in the conditions farmers are faced with. The Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Assocation has reiterated its call for an All-Sector Farm Summit amid claims the average farmer is working 60 hour weeks for less than the minimum wage. According to Irish Farmers Assocation figures, there are 508,000 acres of farm land in Clare and agriculture contributes €1 billion to the local economy here each year. O'Callaghan's Mills farmer and Chairperson of the Clare branch of the ICMSA Martin McMahon says given the amount of revenue generated by the agriculture industry, farmers shouldn't be struggling.
The Clare Chair of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association insists farmers in this county will be put out of business following the approval of the EU Nature Restoration Law. The controversial law will require all member states to take measures to restore nature on 20% of their lands by 2030. According to the EU, 81% of its protected habitats are in poor health and the policy will be crucial to reviving land and sea ecosystems. Clare ICMSA Chair and O'Callaghan's Mills farmer Martin McMahon says if farmers have less land to farm on though, livelihoods will be decimated.
There is a trend of wealthy individuals buying agricultural land as a way of passing on their wealth to their children. With Denis Drennan, President of the ICMSA.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Minister for the Environment Eamonn Ryan and Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConologue will all be speaking at the groups AGM at the Radison Blu Hotel in Meelick this afternoon.
Irish farmers are currently allowed to transport calves at 14 days. If that limit became 28 days, would keeping calves on farms for the first month of their lives signal the beginning of the end of live exports of calves? We discuss with John Enright of ICMSA, Ray Doyle of ICOS, and Caroline Rowley from Ethical Farming Ireland.
A Clare farming representative insists scrapping daylight saving time would be potentially hazardous for children who walk to school in the mornings. In advance of the clocks going back at the weekend, MEP for this region Seán Kelly renewed his call for the bi-annual time change to be done away with. Many people enjoyed either an extra hour in bed or additional time out on the town at the weekend as the clocks went back at 2am on Sunday morning. However, while some reap the benefits of the time change which occurs twice annually, more and more commentators in recent years have voiced their dislike for the seasonal time changes. In 2019, the European Parliament voted to abolish the practice entirely after Spring 2021 but this was postponed once the pandemic hit and hasn't been revisited since. Ireland South MEP Seán Kelly, who was one of those in support of the proposal, believes scrapping the bi-annual time change altogether, or shortening 'winter time' by delaying the change until November and starting 'spring time' a month earlier in February, would reduce the health impacts associated with daylight savings. Road safety has been cited as one reason why 'winter time' should be got rid of, with the AA reporting that the number of road traffic collisions rises by almost a quarter when the clocks go back. However, Clare Chair of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers' Association Martin McMahon believes changing the time to give an extra hour of light in the morning is vital for children's safety on the roads. Former Active Retirement Ireland President and Shannon resident Kay Murphy meanwhile is adamant that the arguments against daylight savings are null and void because people have the ability to adjust their habits and rhythms.
Clare's farming representatives claim they must be financially rewarded for the sacrifices they have made to keep up food production while achieving climate goals. On budget eve, calls are growing for urgent supports to sustain the over 6,000 farm holdings in this county alone. Although average herd sizes grew in the last year, emissions on Irish farms fell by 1.2%. The findings were contained in Teagasc's sustainability survey for 2022, which shows that Dairy was once again the powerhouse for Irish Agircultural. Dairy was found to have netted €2,300 per hectare on family farms last year, while farmers put in on average 2,657 hours per annum. However, with agriculture expected to be allocated 2.5% of tomorrow's budget pot, the Clare Chair of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association claims the emphasis must be placed on making work pay. In the last twelve months, the average price farmers recieved for milk fell by 22cent per litre, which according to ICMSA analysis has led to a loss of €42million in this county alone. Clare Chair and O'Callaghans Mills farmer Martin McMahon says the sector cannot survive if producers are still at the mercy of supermarket chains. Clare's IFA Chair meanwhile believes the effects of the residential zoned land tax must be negated in tomorrow's budget. Landowners with greenfield or brownfield sites here that have been identified as suitable for residential use will be liable for a 3% tax on the value of their zoned land from 2024. However, Parteen Farmer Tom Lane believes the burden on families using their farms on a full time basis will be unsustainable.

He joined Fran on the show to discuss.
