Peter Capaldi – aka Malcolm Tucker, Dr Who, the universal screen delight and an Oscar-winning film director – was the singer in the punk band the Dreamboys in the late ‘70s who put out a single when he was at the art school in Glasgow. And then became an actor. And then - in the grand tradition of actors who've made albums, Hugh Laurie, Scarlett Johansson, Jeff Bridges and Keanu Reeves among them – released St Christopher in 2021. He's just recorded a second, Sweet Illusions, and talks to us in this extremely funny and entertaining pod about … … how his sole motivation was “a burning desire to be on the telly”. … the difference between fronting bands and being in plays. … how he grievously stitched up support band the Cocteau Twins at a gig in Grangemouth. … a teenage love of Slade - “a bit terrifying but still a bit safe”. … first-hand evidence of the connection between Blakey from On the Buses, Adolph Hitler and Beatles. … “you have to write a hundred songs before you can write a good one”. … arriving at art school in '76 a Neil Young fan and his overnight transformation – “peroxide hair, PVC trousers and bright red crepe sole shoes”. … seeing Simple Minds at the Mars Bar in Glasgow, Jim Kerr with his Shakespearian haircut, “strange, powerful, imaginative, post-glam”. … forming the Dreamboys and “trying to be big, clever and Kafka-esque”. … the stigma of being virtually the only band in Glasgow not to get a John Peel session. … writing the “bizarro pulp” lyrics for the Dreamboys – “we couldn't decide if we were the Cramps or Talking Heads”. … what's required, “apart from a terrible Scouse accent”, in playing John Lennon onstage and George Harrison onscreen. … auditioning (comedian, actor, TV host) Craig Ferguson as the band's drummer.   … how Bill Forsyth launched his acting career: “one minute you're supporting Altered Images, the next in a movie with Burt Lancaster”. … forming a duo with Keanu Reeves when filming Dangerous Liaisons in Paris – powdered wigs in the daytime, guitar/bass punk-thrash at night. .. the romantic Edward Hopper charm of Glasgow in the ‘70s - proto-goths, street lights, rain. … how Dr Robert of the Blow Monkeys and four months filming The Suicide Squad in Atlanta spurred him into writing songs.   … the greatest record of all time. Order the Sweet Illusions album here:https://shop.lastnightfromglasgow.com/products/peter-capaldi-sweet-illusions-vinyl-lp-cd-lossless-dlHelp us to keep the conversation going by joining our global Patreon community: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This weekend, Christians around the world are commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For the Catholic Church, Easter is the most important festival of the year. To mark the occasion, we paid a visit to a small German-speaking Catholic church called Saint Christopher's, located in Camberwell in Melbourne and founded by German immigrants in the early post-war period.

Golden Voice narrator Gerard Doyle once again brings the quirkiness and erudition of D.I. Sean Duffy to life as he takes on a case that his boss, who is away on vacation, can't handle. It's 1992 in Belfast, and the murder of an IRA assassin means that Duffy must clock more time hunting for the killer despite his efforts to cut back as he nears retirement. AudioFile's Robin Whitten and host Jo Reed discuss how Doyle's slyly humorous tone makes the story feel like a caper at times as he revels in Duffy's unorthodox approach.  Read our review of the audiobook at our website https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/reviews/read/257606/ Published by Blackstone Audio Discover thousands of audiobook reviews and more at AudioFile's website https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/   Learn more about your ad choices. Hang On St. Christopher (The Sean Duffy Series) by Adrian McKinty Amazon.com New York Times bestselling author Adrian McKinty continues the Edgar Award-winning Sean Duffy series with Hang on St. Christopher. Rain slicked streets, riots, murder, chaos. It's July 1992 and the Troubles in Northern Ireland are still grinding on after twenty-five apocalyptic years. Detective Inspector Sean Duffy got his family safely over the water to Scotland, to "Shortbread Land". Duffy's a part-timer now, only returning to Belfast six days a month to get his pension. It's an easy gig, if he can keep his head down. But then a murder case falls into his lap while his protege is on holiday in Spain. A carjacking gone wrong and the death of a solitary, middle-aged painter. But something's not right, and as Duffy probes he discovers the painter was an IRA assassin. So, the question becomes: Who hit the hitman and why? This is Duffy's most violent and dangerous case yet and the whole future of the burgeoning "peace process" may depend upon it. Based on true events, Duffy must unentangle parallel operations by the CIA, MI5 and Special Branch. Duffy attempts to bring a killer to justice while trying to keep himself and his team alive as everything unravels around them. They might not all make it out of this one. About the author Adrian McKinty was born and grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He studied philosophy at Oxford University before moving to Australia and then New York City. In 2019 Adrian had a global hit with his standalone novel The Chain. Adrian's novels have won the Edgar Award, the Ned Kelly Award (3 times), The Anthony Award, Barry Award, Macavity Award and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. Our guest this week is Dr. Robert Karp. Dr. Karp is Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. A native Philadelphian, he is a graduate of Central High School, Muhlenberg College and Thomas Jefferson University Medical College, did his residency in pediatrics and fellowship in nutrition at New York Hospital/ Cornell Medical Center and completed training as Chief Resident at St Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. He stayed on the St Christopher's staff in a War on Poverty School Health and Nutrition project. His 14 years in Philadelphia are summarized in a 1993 text, "Malnourished Children in The United States: Caught in the Cycle of Poverty." The remainder of his active career was in Brooklyn at SUNY Downstate where he was director of residency training and service clinics at Kings County and SUNY Downstate Hospitals. While at Kings County he read a study from 1962 by Harold Jacobziner and Harry Raybin describing the epidemiology of lead poisoning in New York City. Many of the children attending Kings County's lead poisoning clinic were from three `lead belt' neighborhoods in north Brooklyn described – Fort Greene, Bedford Stuyvesant and Crowne Heights. More recently, with publication of the FHA maps of 1934, he recognized the same neighborhoods as being “redlined.” His commentary on this connection “Redlining and lead Poisoning: Causes and Consequences” followed, and was recently published in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved and is available Open Access.

This weeks guest is Dr. Sandra Hassink, an expert in pediatric obesity. Dr. Hassink has spent her career looking into the pathophysiology and social determinants of childhood obesity. Her career began at the Univeristy of Deleware where she studied Chemistry before heading off to Vanderbilt University to study medicine. After completing her training in Pediatrics at St Christopher's Hospital in Philadelphia, Dr. Hassink began a long trailblazing road to treating childhood obesity, starting a weight management clinic in 1988 at Alfred I. duPont Children's Hospital in Delaware well before most pediatricians even realized there was an issue to address. She is now internationally recognized as an expert in childhood obesity prevention, testifying before Congress and serving as chair of the Delaware Governor's council on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and directing the AAP Institute for Healthy Childhood Weight. She has served as the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, chaired the AAP Obesity Leadership Workgroup, the AAP Institute for Healthy Childhood Weight Advisory Committee, and the AAP Strategic Planning Committee. Dr.  Hassink is the chair of the Institute for Medicaid Innovation Child and Adolescent Subcommittee and a member of the  National Advisory Board. She authored numerous articles for parents and pediatricians and two books: “Pediatric Obesity: Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment Strategies for Primary Care” and “A Clinical Guide to Pediatric Weight Management.” In a word, she is a teacher. Today, we have the privilege of learning. Dr. M

Wisdom Wednesday-The Real Story Of St. Ursula And What Progress Wants With Brother Andre Marie  BROTHER ANDRE MARIE - SPECIAL GUEST Follow Brother on GAB and Twitter - @Brother_Andre  The month of the Sacred Heart! The South basically goes from winter to summer w/ no spring. Today also starts Pride month. They offend God and then take the Sacred Heart month to celebrate their rebellion.  FROM THE CHATROOM: Mike, we should stop calling the gay flag the "rainbow flag"  It is factually NOT since it only has 6 colors in it whereas God's Rainbow has 7 colors!.  We should call it the "Sodomy Flag" just like you say "BullPence"  Or maybe the "groomer flag, or Pervert Flag, deviant flag, or the anal flag etc just not the Rainbow flag. Brother doesn't allow his students to say the work suck - so one of his students didn't do well on a test and he wrote in the margin “This test vacuums.”  Our Lady of Prompt Succor -  QUESTION IN CHATROOM: Can Brother confirm or deny my idea that if a saint has made it to the calendar, they are assuredly real and in heaven? The modern calendar removed Saint Christopher but that doesn't mean St Christopher isn't a saint anymore. They are according to Canonical law owned by the Church. Georgetown, Holy Cross -  They took down the Crucifix when Obama spoke at BC When the Provost invited Obama in 2009 - there were 120 Notre Dame graduates that refused to walk. HEADLINE: The Visitation and the Personhood of the Unborn by John M. Grondelski  HEADLINE: Defeminisation by Frank Wright  From The Article: How feminine is feminism? It cannot and does not defend the most basic facts of womanhood. It is a movement destroying itself over the colonisation of the female by men, which it promotes. The fact that feminism is promoting the replacement of women by men is both astonishing and illustrative of the endpoint of Liberal individualism. This leads in all cases to strange paradoxes which destroy meaningful categories in the service of some extreme identity group. Black identity is about whiteness, rainbow rights are about the attitudes of normal people, feminism is about men. Chaos only entered into the world w/ free will sin. Man by sheer force of will has to impose his will. Fundamentally antithetical to Christian society. Story of Noah in Genesis -  The strength of wine - the fermentation did not happen prior to the flood.  Our Readers And Listeners Keep Us In Print & On The Air!
