My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Josh Boldt, author of the book Moneymaker. Josh is a crime and mystery author who specializes in Southern themes, settings, and characters. He is the author of three novels: Moneymaker, The False Favorite, and Slurry. He lives in Lexington, Kentucky, where he's hard at work on his next story. In my book review, I stated Moneymaker is a page-turning Southern crime thriller set on the Georgia coast. We meet Mack, a surveillance expert, when he accepts a job in Savannah. The job is to keep his eyes on a package, and it soon becomes apparent this package contains drugs - and a lot of them. While in Savannah, Mack becomes attracted to Avery, a local exotic dancer, who just happens to be addicted to the drugs Mack is surveilling. And just to keep the story interesting, Josh lets us see the action from a third point of view - that of one of the bad guys named Jerry. Even though the story takes place during one week, the plot moves along quickly, as we see the inner workings of drug smugglers and what they will do to ensure they get paid for their delivery. And throughout this week, you'll find yourself worrying about Mack, Avery, and yes, even Jerry! If you like fast-paced stories with intrigue, guns, and a bit of romance, then you will enjoy this book. Ray Ó Foghlú, an environmental scientist and woodland conservationist, wrote in the latest edition of the Irish Farmers’ Journal about a local farmer spreading slurry and he complained.
Decontamination work is underway in the Wellington suburb of Newtown, after a "wet slurry" of asbestos was dislodged by waterblasters on a roof, and then blown onto nearby homes. The council and Worksafe say there is no risk to the general public, but to keep residents safe, they're removing the gardens from a handful of nearby properties. RNZ's Kate Green spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

For this month's Pig Edge podcast, we're featuring highlights from a recent episode of the Tillage Edge focusing on the benefits of using pig slurry as an alternative to chemical fertilisers in tillage farming. Pig production is one of the main consumers of Irish cereals and the resulting slurry produced on units can be an important source of nutrients for tillage crops. Opportunities for greater co-operation between the two sectors, from diversifying cereal production to increased use of pig slurry on crops, can lead to a stronger bio-circular economy, with resultant economic benefits for both parties. On this episode, Michael Hennessy, host and head of the Teagasc Crops Knowledge Department, was joined by Tillage Specialist ,Ciaran Collins, and our own Specialised Advisor, Michael McKeon, to discuss the various management considerations of utilising pig slurry on tillage farms. For more episodes and information from the Pig Edge podcast go to:https://www.teagasc.ie/animals/pigs/the-pig-edge-podcast/ Produced on behalf of Teagasc by LastCastMedia.com

We explore the benefits of using pig slurry as an alternative to chemical fertilisers in tillage farming on the latest Tillage Edge podcast. Michael McKeon, Teagasc pig specialist, and Ciaran Collins, Teagasc tillage specialist, discuss how to target the use of pig slurry on tillage farms. We cover best practices for application, nutrient replacement, transport logistics, and regulatory considerations, while Michael explains that pig farmers are well used to organising the logistics of getting slurry to the tillage farm. Teagasc are also running an event in Matty Moore's farm in Offaly looking at applying pig slurry to winter crops using an umbilical cord system. Aengus Cox, Agriculture Correspndent, looks at new rules for farmers spreading slurry.
David Wall, Teagasc Researcher at Johnstown Castle, joins James Dunne on this week's Dairy Edge to discuss correct nutrient management use on dairy farms this spring. David outlines how the correct timing, rate and type of fertiliser is key to ensure efficient use of the nutrients available on farm. He makes the point that when conditions are correct, it would be an opportunity lost not to apply the required nutrients in order to increase the amount of grass grown and set the farm up for subsequent grazings. Since the first of the month, land owners have been allowed to spread slurry. Since the first of the year, the number of farms that have to do this in a way that reduces emissions has increased hugely.
After the fall. That sounds way more ominous than it actually is, but after the time spent in the inn and the "Slurry" (you know if you listened), size matters not. Enjoy the madness in a chilled mug with some fellow adventurers.

Proposals for abattoirs to take on more of the cost of vets and meat inspectors are 'excessive and dangerous' according to the meat industry. The Association of Independent Meat suppliers or AIMS which represents both big and small slaughterhouses, says the Food Standards Agency's plan to remove or reduce the discount offered to smaller abattoirs risks 'single-handedly destroying the foundations of the British meat industry. The FSA have urged people to take part in their consultation.Farmers are getting the highest price for their beef animals in England and Wales, for ten years. Part of the reason, according to Meat Promotion Wales, is growing domestic demand. We speak to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board. Some Welsh farmers claim they're having to choose between the risk of polluting rivers or breaking the law, ahead of a controversial muck-spreading ban. New rules forbid slurry spreading across Wales from mid October to January, in an effort to protect water quality. After a record breaking year of rainfall across many parts of the UK water management has become an ever pressing issue for farmers. In Wales, it's a year since the launch of the Welsh Government's Natural Flood Management Accelerator programme. We visit a natural flood management project that's part of the two-year £4.6 million pound programme.Conservationists in Devon are working with Natural England to see whether there could be some kind of financial support for farmers who make space for beavers on their land as part of natural flood management.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
The government has published its Employment Rights Bill - so what will it mean for farmers and the staff who work for them? Its key proposals include protection against unfair dismissal from day one, flexible working, improved rights for sick pay, bereavement and parental leave, and a move to regulate zero hours contracts. Most of the planned changes won't take effect until 2026 and there'll be a period of consultation between now and then. Conservationists have long argued that the reintroduction of beavers can help reduce the risk of flooding - the dams they build slow the flow of water in rivers, holding it back from built-up areas further downstream. Well, beavers have been living wild on the River Otter in East Devon for at least 16 years, but last year, there was significant flooding in the area. And some Welsh farmers have claimed they are having to choose between the risk of polluting rivers or breaking the law, ahead of a controversial muck-spreading ban. New rules forbid slurry spreading across Wales from mid October to January, in an effort to protect water quality. NFU Cymru says there is "enormous concern" after wet conditions have hampered efforts to empty slurry stores ahead of the deadline. But the organisation representing Welsh rivers' trusts say farmers have had years to prepare for the changes. Presented by Caz Graham Produced by Heather Simons
EU officials have been hearing the arguments for retaining the derogation that allows some farmers to spread larger amounts of manure than everyone else. As water quality in many rivers, lakes and estuaries has not improved as much as we promised it would, we find out what way the Commission might be leaning and the impact if the derogation goes.

In a world first, methane from slurry on a dairy farm in Somerset is being broken down and turned into hydrogen gas and graphene. The farm involved is Worthy Farm, which hosts the Glastonbury Festival. It already has an anaerobic digester which uses slurry from their dairy cows to make methane which is used to make electricity, and now also used to make graphene. We find out how it all works.Last year tens of thousands of sheep in the Netherlands died after contracting bluetongue - a virus transmitted by biting midges. Famers in England are being warned to be vigilant for signs of the disease, and scientists at the Pirbright Institute in Surrey are studying midges to try to predict what might happen this summer. And a shortage of vets means recruiting can be a challenge - and it can be even harder for practices in remote areas. All Our Social Links In this episode of JB's Bible and Bourbon Talk, JB and Fancy Rob discuss how Christians should respond to the culture of outrage. They emphasize the importance of responding with grace, peace, and an overwhelming amount of love, even in the face of anger and outrage. They explore the story of Paul's missionary journey to Ephesus in Acts 19, where he faced opposition and outrage from those who were losing money due to the influence of Christianity. The hosts highlight the need for common sense, cool heads, and truth to prevail in resolving conflicts and diffusing outrage. They remind listeners that the gospel is countercultural, and that Christians should respond differently to the outrage of the culture, seeking to bring peace and love to a world easily stirred up into anger. The episode concludes with the feature pour of Old Scout Smooth Ambler store pick. Takeaways: As Christians, we are called to respond to outrage with grace and peace, rather than joining in the anger and outrage of the culture. The gospel is countercultural and Christians should respond differently to the outrage of the culture, seeking to bring peace and love. Common sense must prevail in responding to outrage, and we should take a step back, listen, and seek to understand the root of the problem before responding. Wisdom and common sense are essential in navigating outrage and responding in a way that reflects Christ's love and grace. Studying the Bible and seeking wisdom from God is crucial in developing the ability to respond to outrage with grace and peace. Responding to outrage requires common sense, cool heads, and truth. Understanding the root of the issue is crucial in responding effectively. Jesus is the ultimate source of truth and peace. Being a peacemaker means responding to outrage in a biblical fashion. Tonight I will be speaking with Kenny who had an encounter when he was young. A creature came up to his window and stared at him. Kenny said "The window is 8 feet up and this thing was just standing there looking at me. Later my mother told me about things that happened on the property and told me she believed me. Kenny has a podcast called Melchizedek Chronicles. Check out his site at https://melchizedekchronicles.org/ We will also be talking with Z. Z writes "In 2003 I was just out of high school with nothing to do. I worked with my dad at a goldmine somewhat north and east of Fairbanks, Alaska. One afternoon after a particularly long shift, we were driving off the mountain and I lit a cigarette and leaned my head back to look out the window. A couple hundred yards below us was a copse of tree trunks left over from a forest fire the year before. As my eyes rested on them I saw what looked like a burned tree start walking like a man up the valley just below us. The valley is drainage for the mine and is full of a superfine mud that's left after gold is processed—we called it slurry—it's very dangerous to walk across and the area was fenced off so it was strange to see a man down there but it was late April and much of it could have still been frozen enough to walk on however he'd gotten in there. I pointed it out to my dad who had to stop and lean over me to see and he saw it just as it cleared the tree line. He said he didn't know how he got down there but we agreed he looked pretty big. We were fairly exhausted so we drove home and I forgot about it for the night. The next morning I asked a coworker if they'd caught the guy down in the drainage pond. His brother worked security so I assumed he'd have heard anything if there was anything to hear. He hadn't but he asked what I was talking about and I told him what we'd seen. He laughed and said “ohhh, you saw the Slurry Troll”. He then told me that nobody calls it a Bigfoot but people had seen it up around the mine since the late 80's and there was a rumor it even attacked a guy around ‘95 but I never heard any corroboration. I did speak to one operator who saw it from the bottom of a tunnel but he wouldn't say much beyond that it was at least 8 feet tall because he saw it leaning over to look down at him. The miners don't like to talk about it because it risks a highly paying job so I'm not surprised I never heard much else. What we saw was a jet black silhouette that sort of resembled Shaq, the arms and legs were sort of skinny compared to the barrel body. We didn't see any sharp features beyond maybe some hair on the forearms."
