The dangers that exist in the world of social media today and how predators use it to put your child at risk. Lt. Kinsman has been in law enforcement for 24 years and the last 20 of those years at the Portsmouth Police Department. In 2020, Lt. Kinsman accepted an offer in the Investigations Division as the Commander of the NH Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. NH ICAC is one of 61 total ICAC Task Forces across the country and is responsible for a complex approach to investigating and prosecuting internet-based child sexual abuse cases. Lt. Kinsman is a veteran of the US Air Force and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Counseling. Parents should start the conversation about social media when they're children are young to create an open dialogue about use and safe practices, and not wait until they are in the height of their teenage years. Kids use social media to connect and if they're growing friendships based on someone's social media ranking, it's a red flag. Because social media is an instant gratification when people like or give a thumbs up, kids can begin to crave more or more. Teens can find themselves trusting someone they don't know while believing that it's a real person who genuinely wants to get to know them. There are multi-billion dollar conglomerates across the world that make a living off of this. They create a false profile and send out a wide net to fish for responses. Kids can fall into being comfortable with these new connections and end up sharing personal photos and information. That can be used against them in an extortion-type method to get $ with the false promise that they won't share the information. As parents we can let our teens know that we are here for them no matter what comes up. Keeping the door open on dialogue with your teen about social media will help keep them informed about possible dangers. Knowledge is powerful. Parents need to work WITH their children on this issue, not AGAINST them. S.M.A.R.T. acronym: be the parent who is aware of what's going on. “CONTENT WARNING” AND “TRIGGER WARNING.”This episode contains content that may be alarming to some listeners. Please check the show notes for more detailed descriptions and take care of yourself. What would you do if you witnessed a family member being sexually abused? Yamisel Pence found her calling when she had to answer that very question. In this episode, Yami shares with us her journey as a police officer, ICAC, SVU detective, and then as an educator to parents. Some cases have a positive outcome where the abused child can receive the support they need. It is never too late to report, just like in the Josh Duggar case. However negative outcome cases happen too often. Why is that? Sometimes it has to do with how the parent responds to a child's accusation. Yami's goal is to teach parents on how to respond, pick up on grooming signs, and what questions to ask so their child can feel safe. About Yami Pence:Yami Pence is a former Internet Crimes Against Children, Child Exploitation, and Special Victims Unit Detective from South Florida, who currently educates parents, schools, and churches on how to Keep Our Kids Safe from abuse on the internet and in real life. Parenting and the internet. How do you parent effectively with the internet? Let's talk to Brian who works in law enforcement, specifically Internet Crimes Against Children as he shares his experiences parenting, and parenting through his occupation.
The Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) is an organization of law enforcement officers from all over the United States working to catch online predators and protect our children. We sit down at the Atlanta ICAC conference with Detective and ICAC Affiliate Matthew Wharton of the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department in Wyoming and discuss his experience with ICAC and how he got started working with ICAC. We close out by talking mental health for investigators and how examiners and departments can best take care of those working these type of cases.
This is one of the most important shows we have ever produced. We are asking YOU to contact Gov. Newsom and stop the defunding of the Crimes Against Children's Task Forces all over the state. That's right. We must raise our voices and tell the Governor how important it is that our state fund child sex crimes investigations. Currently the 2022-2023 state budget EXCLUDES funding for California ICAC Task Forces. Our guest today is Chief Billy Green, Fontana Police Department. The Fontana ICAC unit has conducted over 800 criminal investigations related to child sex crimes, served hundreds of search warrants and investigated nearly 700 cyber tips related to online child exploitation cases connected to the Inland Empire. They have just learned that their Task Force (and five other California ICAC Task Forces) have been omitted from Gov. Newsom's new budget. Without funding, the unit will not be able to continue their important work. Why is ICAC so critical? The California Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task forces investigates child abuse cases, online sextortion (blackmail) cases, child pornography and pedophilia cases. Never has this been more needed. The past two years, literally millions of young people went online, many without supervision and many too young to understand why a pedophile wants to connect with a naïve child and groom them to send an illicit photo. At the same time, large scale, global pedophile rings developed in the Dark Net using the internet to connect and share images of violated children. Pedophiles use technology to access, groom, and exploit millions of kids through apps, chatrooms, dating sites, hook up sites and online gaming. A suggestive photo sent by a child to what they believe to be a new friend, can be shared with over 500,000 pedophiles in less than a day. The child will never be able to get the photo back. It will change their lives (and the lives of their family) forever. Without the proper funding for technology, resources and training, these cases may not be investigated and prosecuted effectively. Please listen to this show and contact your legislators to let them know just how critical the ICAC funding is to keep our kids safe from predators. Thank you. Jeanne Parker, DeliverFund's Director of Special Programs, joined The Protectors to talk about child exploitation and trafficking. Jeanne really opened up my eyes about what exactly is happening in the world of child trafficking, especially the sheer numbers of men who answer ads to purchase children for sex. This is an especially important interview for parents out there and what our children are exposed to and how we may want to respond. This is just one part of a series of trafficking interviews, make sure to subscribe and share. Thank you all for the support. For more information, check out DeliverFund. They are truly in this fight. About Jeanne: Jeanne has dedicated her life to protecting children. She retired as a Commander from the Flathead County Sheriff's Office in Montana after 20 years of service and has spent more than 12 years working on Internet Crimes Against Children and human trafficking investigations. This is a hard hitting show with information every parent needs to hear. Few parents or teens understand where a naked photo goes when you hit “Send”. The Inland Empire is fortunate to have one of the nation's premier task forces focused on sexual crimes against children. Chief Green and the Fontana PD's ICAC Task Force are exceptional in their expertise and dedication to keeping our kids safe from predators. For this podcast, Opal Singleton, Host of Exploited: Crimes and Technology (AM 590) was privileged to spend time with the Fontana ICAC Task Force and have them share some of the key points that parents and grandparents need to know about how to keep their kids safe online. Fontana PD's ICAC investigates, apprehends and assists in prosecutions of some of the world's most depraved criminals who violate children both locally and around the globe. The Task Force is led by Sgt Heaviside and Corporal Guith who are trained experts in advanced technology, pedophile behaviors and criminal investigations. This team collaborates with other local law enforcement agencies as well as global agencies including FBI, Interpol and Homeland Security to identify pedophiles who may be violating children locally and sharing the photos around the world with other pedophiles. This show will educate you about how pedophiles meet online, exchange coded messages to join underground, dark web pedophile sites where they buy, sell and trade millions of photos of sexual violation of underage children. Difficult Conversations -Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician
Hello and welcome to Difficult Conversations - Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician with Dr. Anthony Orsini. Today, I am blessed to have as my guest and longtime friend, Tony DeVincenzo. He is here to talk about difficult conversations in child advocacy and child abuse. Currently, he is a Training Specialist with Northeast Regional Children’s Advocacy Center, where he provides training and technical assistance to child advocacy centers and child abuse multi-disciplinary teams throughout the Northeast Region of the United States. Tony has also presented workshops in a variety of topics related to child advocacy. Before working in the child advocacy field, Tony served 25 years in law enforcement in New Jersey, a majority of his career was spent as a Detective investigating crimes against children. After supervising the Sex Crimes/Child Endangerment Unit, and Internet Crimes Against Children, Unit, he retired from law enforcement in 2013 as a Lieutenant. He is also an adjunct faculty member at local colleges teaching courses related to Criminal Justice and Child Advocacy. As always, Dr. Orsini keeps his promise about two things, that you will feel inspired, and you will have learned valuable lessons to be a better and more compassionate communicator.Tony tells us why he decided to enter the child abuse unit as a young police officer and why it remains such passion for him. We learn the one type of case that really affects him more than others. Tony takes us through the process of the child advocacy center, from when he gets the phone call of child abuse, to the process of the investigation, and the training of interviewing children and teens. Also, we learn about the different ways allegations are made. Dr. Orsini shares a funny story about something his son said to his teacher when he was little. Tony DeVincenzo makes a point of stating that child abuse is the one thing that spans every demographic. He shares an important piece of advice. Tony tells us 2 conversations that he has found difficult to have with families dealing with child abuse, and familiarizes us with the term “non-offending caregiver.” He also gives advice on the proper way to have conversations with family members and how the healing process can start. Find out all about the Northeast Children’s Advocacy Center and how you can get involved in your community. Did you know Tony has his own podcast too? SmartSocial.com's Ultimate Guide To Child Sex Trafficking, Human Trafficking, Sextortion, & Online EnticementJoe Laramie is a retired police Lt. with more than three decades of law enforcement experience, including serving as the Commander of the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.Laramie Top 3 Tips to Protect Children Online:Stop focusing on the tech: While it’s impossible to know every app and online game out there, it is possible to know your own child. Laramie says to start focusing on your child’s behavior, rather than what apps they are using. If children learn early on what behaviors are appropriate and what consequences they will face for breaking rules online, they are more likely to maintain safe behaviors no matter what type of app they use. Think in terms of how to manage communication with your kids: Before parents hand over the car keys for the first time, they always give teens driving lessons, teach them the rules of the road and what consequences they will face for breaking a parent’s trust. Laramie says it should be the same scenario when it comes to technology. Parents should know what their kids are doing on their phones and computers and how long they are using their devices each day. It’s important to stay involved and keep an open dialogue. Know who your kid hangs out with: If a friend comes over to play or hang out, parents know exactly who they are. With technology, many parents allow kids to communicate with their "friends" without ever knowing who is on the other end of the chat. Laramie says parents should regularly ask their children who they are chatting with and who their online friends are. When parents ask questions and show a genuine interest, it makes a big difference.Learn from Smart Social's resources: Join our free newsletter for parents and educators: https://smartsocial.com/newsletter/Register for a free online Parent Night to learn the hidden safety features on popular apps: https://smartsocial.com/social-media-webinar/Become a Smart Social VIP (Very Informed Parents) Member and unlock 30+ workshops (learn online safety and how to Shine Online™): https://learn.smartsocial.com/Download the free Smart Social app: https://smartsocial.com/appLearn the top 100 popular teen apps: https://smartsocial.com/app-guide-parents-teachers/View the top parental control software: https://smartsocial.com/parental-control-software/Learn the latest Teen Slang, Emojis & Hashtags: https://smartsocial.com/teen-slang-emojis-hashtags-list/Get ideas for offline activities for your students: https://smartsocial.com/offline-activities-reduce-screentime/Get Educational Online Activity ideas for your students: https://smartsocial.com/offline-activities-reduce-screentime/Subscribe to our podcast on:Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/id1269872857Google Podcasts: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Ikvg45xcfqi3cz5vxy7vsryf3uqYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/user/SafeSmartSocial/videos
