Fifty years of changemaking and reform haven't fixed Congress—what does that reveal about American democracy? In Stuck: How Money, Media and Violence Prevent Change in Congress, Maya Kornberg chronicles the efforts of congressional reformers over the last fifty years and documents the mounting forces that have kept their reforms from creating meaningful change. Dr. Kornberg reveals how political violence, astronomical campaign costs, relentless fundraising demands, shrinking staff, and centralized party leadership all constrain the ability of new members to legislate and represent their constituents. Social media, while offering new platforms for political expression, has also heightened harassment and fed a performative culture that rewards spectacle over substance. Bolstered by dozens of interviews, congressional records, and the voices of lawmakers past and present—including Henry Waxman, Toby Moffett, Phil English, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Lauren Underwood—Stuck offers a sobering portrait of a legislative body paralyzed by its own internal dynamics. Dr. Kornberg outlines tangible reforms that could restore Congress's capacity to function and amplify the power of its newest members. At a time when Americans are losing faith in democracy's most representative institution, Stuck makes the case for how it could be saved. Politics used to be a battle over competing ideas, but now it's become a very real fight “between identities”: that's according to Valentina Grippo, an Italian Member of Parliament and delegate to the UN-affiliated Inter-Parliamentary Union, or IPU, which met at UN Headquarters this week in New York.  A majority of MPs worldwide are facing threats and abuse from voters, according to a new IPU report which found that 71 per cent of surveyed lawmakers experienced violence from the public – whether offline, online or both. Speaking to Edouard de Bray of UN News Ms. Grippo stressed that rising polarisation and online disinformation are fuelling violence against politicians and undermining democratic debate worldwide.

In this thought-provoking, I'm joined by Andrew Bud, CEO of iProov, the global leader in face biometric verification and authentication technology. As we delve into the evolving world of deepfakes, we unpack the security implications for businesses and individuals alike. Andrew kicks off the conversation by sharing crucial insights into the security risks of using voice replication as a biometric verification method. With generative AI technologies becoming increasingly advanced, it has become alarmingly simple for both cybercriminals and regular individuals to replicate voices, posing significant threats to the security of sensitive information. We explore how deepfakes, including face swaps and voice replication, have become common tools for cybercriminals. According to iProov's 2023 Biometric Threat Report, digital injection attacks, such as the use of deepfakes, have risen dramatically, occurring five times more often than persistent presentation attacks in 2022. With the rise of these sophisticated cyber-attacks, Andrew underscores the importance of robust biometric authentication. He explains how iProov's technology, including the IPU flashmark, analyzes the reflection of screen illumination from a user's face to ensure they are a live human and not a generative deepfake. Andrew and I delve into the importance of authenticating and not just verifying customers, the largely misunderstood threat of deepfakes, and why overconfidence and unsuspecting victims intensify this threat. We discuss how organizations can safeguard against these advanced attacks and the imperative role of strong verification in protecting users on social platforms. Whether you're concerned about your online security, work in the digital space, or are simply interested in the evolving world of deepfakes, this episode is packed with valuable insights. Join us as we navigate the intricacies of biometric authentication in a world where distinguishing between real and fake has become a crucial security measure.

It has been my great privilege to count this week's guest low-end legend Christopher Sutton as a friend for near three decades now. Episode 74 marks his TMpod debut, the first of many appearances I hope! The conversation starts at the beginning, wherein we meet a young Chris in the 80's walking down the strip mall streets of his hometown of Lacey, WA carrying his new $208 bass guitar toward home where he would begin practicing his hair metal bass shredding.  It wasn't until his mom insisted he and his friend Dan check out a music festival happening downtown that he had any inkling that he lived in a punk rock epicenter. All that changed the moment they stepped out of the car to check out the International Pop Underground Festival. It wasn't long before he met IPU creator, K Records founder Calvin Johnson while recording with Oly ska band Engine 54 and was swept away on a musical odyssey that continues to this day and has taken him around the world beginning with Calvin's Dub Narcotic Sounds System continuing with C.O.C.O, The Gossip, The Dirt Bombs, Chain and the Gang to name a few. Always a prolific musician, Chris has recently released a collection of selected solo tunes on the Antiquated Future label created between 1998 and 2019 called you brought me back from the dead. It's great listening and I urge you to seek it out either in it's cassette form or streaming on all the web places! Enjoy my conversation with Chris!
