The Apocalyptic Paul Booth is a series of episodes dedicated to apocalyptic readings of the apostle Paul's letters. Interviews situate Pauline apocalyptic—a stream of similar interpretations of Paul's writings originating in the work of exegetes like Rudolf Bultmann and Ernst Käsemann—among other interpretations (the Old and New Paul readings, for instance) as well as among Second Temple Jewish apocalyptic literature. Here we interview Jamie Davies (PhD, St Andrews), Tutor of New Testament and Director of Research at Trinity College, Bristol (UK). His research largely concerns apocalyptic thought in the New Testament and other Second Temple Jewish and Christian literature, with a particular focus on the letters and theology of Paul. He is the author of Paul Among the Apocalypses (T&T Clark, 2016), The Apocalyptic Paul: Retrospect and Prospect (Cascade, 2022), and Reading Revelation: A Literary and Theological Commentary (Smyth & Helwys, in press 2023). At school, Jamie Davies was fascinated by how impossibly complex things can arise from very simple beginnings. He decided that he would become a radio astronomer and investigate the formation of galaxies from the stars and planets of our universe. But then he went to university. During his degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge, he came across the field of developmental biology and instantly knew he had found his calling. What could be a better challenge than trying to find out how human bodies are built from a sperm and an egg? Now, in his lab at the University of Edinburgh, Jamie Davies works on the kidney, trying to work out how it forms and how we might grow kidneys from scratch, as well as diving into the mysterious realm of synthetic biology. Drug development is a slow process at the best of times. So the best way to rapidly find treatments for Covid-19 was to find known drugs that could be repurposed to fight the new disease. But with the confusion created by the myriad of studies published about Covid-19, often without peer-review, how do you keep track of everything? This is where Jamie Davies stepped in. His lab created a curated database of known drugs and drug targets that should be prioritised in the fight against Covid-19, and provided a reliable source of information about new research. In this episode, Tom talks to Professor Davies about the purpose of this new database, how the pandemic has changed the way research is done, and what effects this could have on science going forward. Significance in life and hope for the futureIn the fourth talk of our ‘Creed’ series, Jamie Davies examines Christian belief in ‘the resurrection of the body and life eternal’.What does ‘resurrection’ mean? How can belief in resurrection make a difference to my life today? Will heaven be boring? (Will we just be playing a harp for eternity?) This talk reminds us of the significance and importance of Jesus’ resurrection, and why it remains fundamental to Christian hope, both now and for the future. On the newest Town Mile Podcast we're joined by one of the All-Time great dudes, Jamie Davies. He tells us about his journey from Alexandria, South Dakota and we take it back to the late 80's/early 90's and discuss that epic run of Hanson vs. Emery ballgames. He was a part of a legendary one in himself in '92, when he ripped off 4 tds vs. Emery-Ethan in the 4th quarter and broke my 7th grade heart. We get into his history as a Philadelphia Eagles fan as well, and what that ride has been like for him. Huge props to him for taking some time to talk to us, this was a fun one! We also roll out a couple new segments on this 23rd episode. Curious what that is?? The best you can say about the Abu-Dhabi GP 2013 was that it was an above-average race, action wise. The worst that you could say about the 2013 Abu-Dhabi Pubscast is that it was entertaining if nothing else! Paul Hadsley and his new understudy "Jamie Oliver" Jamie Davies captured all the opinions and banter of a great crowd of F1 fans down at the Apres Bar in Birmingham, listen to all the fun down the pub here! 2 weeks time we head into the final pair of races with the American GP. Professor Jamie Davies works in the Physiology department at the University of Edinburgh. Embryologists have classically approached the ideas in Turing’s “The chemical basis of morphogenesis” in two ways: (a) they have modelled embryos in silico to see if Turing patterning could make a particular pattern in principle; and (b) they have sought evidence, from gene expression patterns and knockout phenotypes, for Turing patterning in vivo. We are taking a third approach, effectively a hybrid of the other two and of synthetic biology: we seek to assemble a synthetic Turing patterning system in cultures of living cells. Here, we will present our design, how it behaves in models, and will describe the state of our construction at the time of the meeting. The Turing Research Symposium was organised by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics in partnership with SICSA and supported by Cambridge University Press.

Professor Jamie Davies is Professor of Experimental Anatomy at the University. During fetal life, cells have hidden conversations with each other as they build our tissues, such as kidney, heart and liver. In order to build tissues for ourselves, we need to speak their language. This lecture will reveal the clues we have picked up to help build tissues in the laboratory, which could help save the lives of people requiring an organ transplant. This lecture is part of the Medical Detectives, a series of public lectures that show how keen detective work is still essential for 21st century doctors: http://www.ed.ac.uk/news/events/medical-detectives/ Recorded on Thursday 11 November 2010 in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre at the University of Edinburgh.
