We chat with Jenny Quilty after her WSER 100mi debut in the fastest female field of all time. A quote straight from her instagram @adventuresofjenthar: "18hrs 49min, 11th woman & 100miles from Olympic Valley to Auburn in the fastest women's field yet! I said it last night and it feels the same today, I'm the happiest 11th place woman ever. I knocked almost 1hr off the prior fastest 11th place finish, and that just makes me so darn proud to be a part of this field. I ran a time much faster than I had imagined and learned more about what it feels like to accept and stay in the pain cave. I could not have asked for a more fun day running 100 miles, for only my 2nd time ever & first time at states!" In 2014 Jenny became dramatically ill, fighting sepsis for her life. Losing both legs below the knees, five fingers and multiple organs, enduring well over fifty surgeries and rising above opioid withdrawal, her story is one of always making the choice to step into life. This is her tale shared through the voice of her beloved wife Myshkin, about how woven strands of support showed up from around the world to hold them when all seemed lost. Jenny and Myshkin will inspire all with their lived story of always choosing love, joy, and community, even when life is in the darkest place.Jenny Qaqundah, born to Palestinian immigrants, is an R.N. and an herbalist that opened the Grateful Desert Apothecary in Joshua Tree, CA. In January of 2014, Joshua Tree’s beloved village herbalist, Jenny Q. suddenly became seriously ill and rapidly descended into a coma with slender chance of survival. The shock of this news initiated an overwhelming outpouring of love, wit, service, practical magic and sharing of spiritual wisdom between those in her intimate desert community. Indeed it seemed that the entire group became one in their desperate effort and race against the clock to save her life. While the words of others in the community tell the story in this book, it is Jenny’s own insightful writings that provide a fascinating window into a range of rare experiences. She gives us a unique glimpse into the mysterious worlds encountered while in a coma, the absolute alteration of losing one’s legs, the subtle venom of PTSD, the nightmare of withdrawal from prescription opiates, and the maddening frustration of having to re-learn basic skills previously taken for granted such as the ability to walk. This is a story of love and tenacity which speaks to the power of a mother’s connection to her child and of the fierce determination and dedication of a lover who, faced with unthinkable tragedy during the tender stages of a new and beautiful relationship, managed to create a sacred moment amidst the ravages of sepsis and the wounds of surgery to propose to her best friend. Though Held Together ruthlessly explores dark and often fear-filled places, it is ultimately a celebration of human will, the value of community and the power of love. This book will inspire and light a path for every person caught in a struggle against all odds. http://artistecard.com/heldtogetherbook
In this episode we have Jenny Qaqundah. We talk about recovery from her near-death experience, adapting to limb loss, PTSD, and bunch of other phenomena. Jenny shares with us her story and the tools she used to adapt to the tough stuff that Jenny encountered and currently navigates. We also dive into the importance of surrounding oneself with a community. Jenny is an author, nurse, well known herbalist, and amputee. In 2014 a very health conscious Jenny fell into a coma proceeding a routine medical procedure gone wrong this led to her becoming an amputee. Jenny Q has over the last 4 years suffered through: sepsis, near death, a coma, six months in the ICU, and over 50 surgeries. She lost both her legs, five fingers, and precious time with her beloved daughter and her new sweetheart. She returned home to a long struggle, regaining health and rebuilding her life. Jenny began writing about her experience during her recovery and those reflections are now a book, "Held Together", filled with poems, prose and essays about a village coming together, suffering together, celebrating together, and falling in love together. The book is really unique because the book isn’t just Jenny's writings, but that of her community, as she's asked them to contribute their perspectives of this experience as well. Though Held Together is a riveting story of the power of love and the strength of community, it will also serve and inspire many who are disabled, caregivers, addicts, recovering addicts, near death survivors, burn victims, amputees, PTSD sufferers, light warriors, mothers and more. Cass Midgley interviews Jenny Q. Unfortunately Bob's not with us on today's episode. Jenny Q was born in Southern California to Palestinian immigrants. Her love of herbs began in her teens while on the road following the Grateful Dead. She has set her roots in Joshua Tree, California, where she opened Grateful Desert, a local apothecary. In 2014, Jenny suddenly became seriously ill and rapidly descended into a coma with slender chance of survival. She has quite a story and put it in a book entitled "Held Together" which incorporates many of her friends who bore witness to the experience. The book releases June 1st. Here's what one reviewer said of Jenny's book: “Held Together” tells a villages account of a personal tragedy. While seemingly detailing the medical marvel that left Jenny with both of her legs and five fingers amputated, the book truly centers around the power of community and the strength people find in a time of tragedy." This is what drew my interest in Jenny's story: it's testament to the power of community and the determination of the human spirit. So often when tragedy strikes, people either blame god or spin it around to make god look good in spite of it. As humanists and atheists, we avoid both of those silly explanations and just get busy helping remedy it. How Jenny's friends rallied around her to mitigate the suffering and hardship of the tragedy, while beautiful in it's own way, is not unique to Jenny's situation. Many, if not all, of us have witnessed friends and family descend on a problem with love and care when one of our own goes down. And yes, I have an agenda to assign credit where it belongs--even when it happens in church settings--the credit, and glory, if you will, goes to humans. Loving, caring, compassionate, and godless human beings. Spoiler alert, Jenny survived the sepsis that nearly took her life, and today she joyously shares her life with her tight-knit desert community, her beloveds Yazzy, her daughter and Myshkin, her wife. Jenny's story raises the question, "what is spirituality?" I recently read a book that I highly recommend titled Living the Examined Life: Wisdom for the Second Half of the Journey, by James Hollis. And before we get into my talk with Jenny I'd like to play a clip from it. So here's my talk with Jenny Q. If you connect with her and would like to correspond with her, get the book, or talk about herbs and essential oils, her email is connect@heldtogetherbook.com , her website is www.heldtogetherbook.com, and the website for her herbal business is gratefuldesert.com We taped this conversation on April 29th, 2018.We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. We think the world is a better place when more people live by sight, not by faith. Please subscribe to our podcast, and leave a review wherever you listen to podcasts. In 2015, Jennifer started hosting shows on Live Video (Livestreaming) originating with “The DailyQ Show”, an online interview show where she explored the lives of successful entrepreneurs, business owners, solopreneurs, and other individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their field.
