“Media, Religion, and the Nation,” featured Zeba Khan, San Fransisco Chronicle, Jesse Holland, George Washington University, and Syreeta McFadden, Borough of Manhattan Community College. Assistant Dean for Religion and Public Life, Hussein Rashid, served as moderator. For decades, news media in the U.S. has been critiqued as reproducing structures of power and exclusion, including those in religions. While entertainment media has worked towards more inclusive storytelling recently, historically all media has been inconsistent in representing and engaging marginalized communities. This panel examined how media framing creates our understanding of what the United States is and how we can be more literate media consumers. This was the second of four sessions in the Religion and Democratic Ideals series. This series focused on where religion intersects with democratic ideals and institutions. Many horror fans have been known to describe one of their favourite movies as “underrated”. Typically, it describes a movie that took time to find an audience, was well received by audience and/or critics but didn't find financial success or were under-seen because of a bungled release by the studio or distributor. Films like “John Carpenter's “The Thing”, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2”, “The Exorcist 3”, “The Frighteners” and “TrickRTreat”. All examples of films that didn't perform when they were first released but found a following over time. Primarily for the simple reason that they are all damn good movies that deserved better. Let's add another under-seen gem to the list of greats that deserve more attention than they got. Released in 2010, “YellowBrickRoad” is a nightmare inducing, reality shattering descent into madness. Part “Blair Witch”, part “Wizard of Oz” … all relentlessly terrifying. Written and directed by team Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland, the film came out to strong reactions from audiences and most critics but despite a theatrical release, came and went with little fanfare. And yet, as more and more people stumbled upon it over time and word of mouth spread among genre fans, the film has continued to receive a much-deserved re-evaluation. Much like the titular path in the film, this movie has many dark secrets that once unearthed, are impossible to forget.  Our guest in this episode is filmmaker Andy Mitton. Andy discusses his background in theatre growing up in Massachusetts, the way his love of horror and theatre found a natural rhythm, why often times a genre filmmakers influences aren't necessarily horror films (a reoccurring theme for SYG listeners) and his haunting new Pandemic horror film “The Harbinger”. Andy is a visionary filmmaker with a tremendous eye for detail and a finely tuned skilled for finding the truth in his characters and the actors portraying them. That's one of the things that gives Andy's work such resonance. Characters in his films never do what the plot requires of them and you will not find yourself yelling at the screen over their idiotic decision making. It's clear that Andy loves and respects his audience and the stories he is telling. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Is a film editor invisible? Shooting a feature film with smartphones is the new sensation in filmmaking. But it’s only a part of the process. Episode 67 is a discussion with the editor of the viral mobile film, Blue Moon. Judd Resnick discusses his experience editing iPhone footage. When you are looking online for smartphone mobile filmmaking the chatter is mostly about the phone as a camera. It is easy to assume that editing works just as with any camera but the reality for most filmmakers, is that even without smartphone cameras, different cameras can create issues for an editor. A long time ago, editors had to deal with mixed formats with different aspect ratios. Judd speaks about the codec with Apple versus the PC and the software. Judd Resnick shares some of the nuances he experienced, but you would not realize it by watching the film. Editors are a bit invisible and undervalued by the general public.Judd is a professional editor. He moved to New Zealand from San Diego, California and now lives in Christchurch. While he lived in Timaru, he met Ryan O’Rourke who shot Blue Moon, who introduced him to Stef Harris, the writer and director of the film.Blue Moon was shot in Montueka, New Zealand during six nights in thirty hours in and around a gas station. The film has a cinematic look and sound that is inspiring more people to begin their filmmaking career with smartphone cameras. What is cinematic? Judd explains the qualities of cinematic footage during the podcast. The actors, Jed Brophy and Mark Hadlow, made the editing easier for Judd. He explains why he could hold on a shot for a long time without the need to cut to anything without a negative impact to the viewer. The film was pretty much shot with single takes and that helped Judd with the editing process. He shares advice to filmmakers the perspective of the editor. He also gives credit to Jack Bayliss, who did the color correction for Blue Moon. The trailer for Blue Moon is one of the main reasons Blue Moon has gone viral on social media. The film has only been seen, currently, at film festivals. Judd shared how he edited the trailer and the importance of good audio to create the intensity he created in the opening of the trailer.“I think the best directors know the teams to surround themselves with and know when to ask what’s working in this—what isn’t and understand, ‘Okay.’ And that’s why so many films end up on the cutting room floor.”His advice for editors, as a professional, is invaluable. He speaks directly to our listeners about what to consider when editing films regardless of the camera that is used. His advice to filmmakers includes how valuable good audio is to the outcome of a film. The collaboration between people working on a crew is highly important to the ultimate quality of the film and the result of how your films are perceived. Judd also worked as an editor in a film you may have heard of, YellowBrickRoad in 2010, edited by Judd Resnick with Jesse Holland and Andy Mitton. Finishing up sophomore year at Seton Hall University in New Jersey,  Kainoa Spenser was about to face the fight of his life. The International Affairs major woke up one day not feeling well.  The next day he passed out.  Believing that he was just exhausted from finals, Spenser tried to power through. He flew home to Arizona and was immediately rushed to HonorHealth.  His organs were failing. He explains that he was transferred to Mayo Hospital where doctors put Spenser into a medically induced coma.  Necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease, ended up leading to the amputation of Spenser's legs and hands. “When I got out of the hospital a little over a year ago I was connected immediately with Kyle Maynard. He was born with congenital amputations.  Seeing how he was able to transform that tragedy into something that is inspiring to all, and has radically improved his life and lives around the world, was cool to see.  How he was able to turn his pain into … purpose,” Spenser explains. On our Carey Pena Reports Podcast, Spenser told his story alongside his Trainer and Coach, Jesse Holland.  The two met after Spenser spoke at an event for K2 Adventures, for which Holland is a Mountain Guide. They began to chart a course for Spenser's recovery.  “Kainoa often shows me and everybody what we can do.  That we are not a victim,” Holland says. The first objective for Kainoa was to get back to holding a golf club and to have enough stamina to be able to swing. He met and surpassed that goal over the past year, having golfed in two tournaments. Now, Kainoa Spenser is joining K2 Adventures and Jesse Holland on a trip to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest mountain. It's located on the Main Range of the Snowy Mountains in Kosciuszko National Park, part of the Australian Alps National Parks and Reserves. “Improving your mental health starts with improving your physical health,” Spenser says of his ongoing recovery and the lofty physical goals he has set for himself. All along, the community has rallied around Kainoa Spenser and his family using the hashtag #LiveLikeKainoa While he has had overwhelming support, there have been many dark days. And he allows himself the mental space to be depressed – with an end date. “Nothing is wrong with having those (dark days), but the best part is knowing that it's going to end. And setting the end date,” Spenser explains. “You can feel bad for yourself, and eat the worst food for yourself, and watch all the movies you want, and sit on the couch, but know on Monday when you wake up, that that's the end and you are moving forward.” Kainoa serves as inspiration to the Arizona community where he now lives and to the Seton Hall community in New Jersey where he previously went to school, but also for people all over the world who have discovered his story. Around his neck, Kainoa Spenser wears a Tree of Life Intention Stick, created by Valley residents Scott and Marla Berger. Inside the necklace, Spenser puts his words of intention and that's where he keeps his focus. Also, he has his faith. “I have a major connection with God,” Spenser shares. “And he allows me, and my faith truly allows me to have that first breath of … it's going to be okay. There's something greater for this purpose and you have to find those motivating factors outside of yourself.” https://k2adventures.org/ http://kyle-maynard.com/ https://yourscottsdalecoach.com/ The post College Student Climbs One Of The 7 Summits After Loss of Limbs appeared first on Inspired Media 360 TV - Inform | Inspire | Engage.

Greetings believers and non-believers alike, and welcome back to Horror Business! Thanks as always for listening, and we have a great episode for you! First and foremost we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screenprinting company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a tshirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! This episode we are talking about two films exclusive to Shudder, the premiere horror streaming network. Our films are both from 2016: Prevenge and We Go On. We begin by talking about what we’ve seen recently. Liam was lucky enough to catch Exhumed Films EX FEST, the annual twelve hour exploitation festival. He briefly talks about the films he saw at the festival and the special appearance of John Waters to introduce Pink Flamigos. Liam also discusses recents viewings of Fits and Lemonade, while Justin discusses recent viewings of The Girl With All The Gifts and Here Alone. First up is Alice Lowe’s 2016 film Prevenge. We talk about the films unique blend of comedy and horror, and also the deep melancholy that permeates the film. Lowe’s performance as both a person suffering from some kind of mental breakdown that makes the character both terrifying and sympathetic is discussed, as is the semi-ambigous ending. The imagery of the film involving some kind of external corrupting influence, Lowe’s performance as something inhuman, and the nature of madness is discussed. We also talk about the relatibility of what Lowe’s character is experiencing and how in addition to this being a horror/black comedy film it is also something of a black comedy. Finally we talk about the way pregnancy can be viewed as something worthy of being the focal point of a horror film. Next we discuss Jesse Holland and Andy Milton’s 2016 film We Go On. We were truthfully not fans of this film, and discuss what we didn’t like about it, namely a lack of ability in the lead actor, clichéd imagery, a rather mundane plot, and uninspired filmmaking in general. We weren’t kind to this film, but we cannot stress that our opinions are our opinions alone and that doesn’t necessarily make this a bad movie and that you should check it out for yourself if you a chance! As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you! Thanks always to Justin Miller and Doug Tilley for their technical contributions and fliers, Mike Smaczylo for the awesome fliers, and also thanks to Josh “Biggest Kahuna” Alvarez for the theme song, Chris and LVAC for the support and buttons (check them out at www.xlvacx.com), and a HUGE thank you to anyone who retweeted us or shared something on Facebook that we posted.
