Jessica Hepburn is the only woman in the world to have swam the English Channel, run the London Marathon, and climbed Mt. Everest - the so called 'Sea, Street, Summit Challenge.' She also claims to be the only person to have listened to every available episode of the popular BBC Radio 4 show, Desert Island Discs (there's over 3,000!) But that is just the adventure headlines. And at the heart of Jessica's story is one of loss, heartbreak, trauma, and ultimately how she has been able to own the adversity in her life, and turn it into something that creates positive change for herself and others. Jessica is an adventure activist, arts producer and author of three books, her latest, Save Me From The Waves is an adventure story with a difference. Documenting her quest to climb the largest mountain in the world, coupled with her desire to listen to every episode of Desert Island Discs it is a beautifully written story of how the show's Castaway's and their music choices have inspired and helped Jessica make sense of her own life. In this conversation we discuss Jessica's love of lists, how the comedian Jimmy Carr initially inspired her, how she's been part of a movement to change the stigma on infertility, why and how she swam the channel, her journey to summiting Everest, why everyone should tell there life story creatively, how her destination was not what she was expecting and how she was able to make meaning out of it through art. Jessica Hepburn – Save me from the waves: An adventure from sea to summit...with TRE's Hannah Murray
In this episode of The Fertility Podcast, we are joined by a friend of the podcast, and as this episode comes out just a few days after International Women's Day - one hell of a woman - Jessica Hepburn. Jessica is an author, arts producer and, using her own words, ‘the most unlikely adventure activist'! Jessica returns to talk about her latest book, Save me from the Waves. However, for those of you who have not yet come across Jessica (and there really can't be many as she is a living icon!) she also shares her fertility journey so you can get up to speed..Jessica's fertility story lasted a decade, and through her journey of 10 cycles of unsuccessful IVF, she has experienced profound loss, but has found new treasures and a new career. Her books, The Pursuit of Motherhood, 21 miles and now Save me from the Waves, take you on an alternative adventure through the ups and downs of her life and provide advice and comfort for those who are on a similar journey.Through Jesssia's many achievements, she is the only woman in the world to have completed The Sea, Street, Summit Challenge. From running the London marathon, swimming the English Channel and then to only going and climbing to the tippy top of Mount Everest! I am in awe. A common feature of the podcast is for me to ask our guests for a piece of advice or what they wished they knew sooner. Jessica answered both. Her advice to you is to be braver sooner, Jessica uses the hashtag #livebigandbrave wherever she can. When it comes to Fertility, her advice is that she wants people to know that there are many roots to parenthood. There are many ways to create a family, many ways to be a mother in the world. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has launched a ratings system to let patients see which IVF add-ons are backed-up by evidence. Emma Barnett is joined by Professor Tim Child, chair of the HFEA's Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee, and Jessica Hepburn, who spent over £70,000 on unsuccessful fertility procedures. In October 2019, Coleen Rooney was concerned by articles appearing in newspapers that could only have come from stories on her private Instagram account. She laid a trap for the account she suspected of the leak, and then told the world ‘It was…Rebekah Vardy's account'. Rebekah Vardy, who continues to deny she was the source of those stories, sued Coleen for libel. In a radio exclusive, Coleen speaks to Emma about her side of the story, told in a new documentary: The Real Wagatha Story. Jazz/soul singer Mica Millar is performing as part of the London Jazz Festival in November. She joins Anita Rani to talk about her new album, Heaven Knows, which she wrote while recovering from a spinal injury during lockdown. Britain's long-awaited Online Safety Bill is days away from becoming law. Emma talks to legal expert Joshua Rozenburg about what will be in the act. She's also joined by Baroness Kidron, who has been very involved in getting the act through the Houses of Parliament, and Rashik Parmar, CEO of BCS, the chartered institute of IT, about the future of online safety. Are we becoming afraid of our phones? A recent survey suggest half of 12 to 26-year-olds don't answer the phone to their parents and a third of them feel awkward speaking on the phone generally. Emma speaks to Helen Thorn, a writer, podcaster and comedian and to 17-year-old Iona Cooke Mcintosh. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Lottie Garton
Dr Lisa Cameron was the SNP MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow from 2015 until a week ago when she decided to join the Conservative Party. She has described the move as equivalent to leaving an abusive marriage. In her first radio interview since her defection, she joins Emma Barnett to discuss what led to her making this decision. Listeners who have been through IVF treatment will be familiar the extra – and often very expensive – add-on services that many clinics recommend. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the fertility regulator, has now launched a ratings system to let patients see which add-ons are backed-up by evidence. Strikingly, not one of them has been given the highest "green" rating. Professor Tim Child chairs the HFEA's Scientific and Clinical Advances Advisory Committee. Jessica Hepburn spent over £70,000 on unsuccessful fertility procedures and now campaigns about the fertility industry. They joined Emma to discuss. Three Little Birds is a new ITV series written by Lenny Henry which follows three women who emigrate from Jamaica to England in the 1950s - post-Windrush. The series is inspired by the stories of Lenny Henry's family who, although had positive experiences of being helped as new arrivals, also shared accounts of physical and racial abuse when they reached the UK. Saffron Coomber who plays ‘Chantrelle' and director Yero Timi Biu talk about the show. Julia Fox is an actor, artist and fashion icon, as famous for her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems as she is for her spectacular avant-garde fashion choices. She became tabloid fodder after a brief relationship with Kanye West. Her memoir Down the Drain describes a troubled childhood of sex, drugs and abusive relationships in Italy and New York. She tells Emma how her high-fashion image allows her to escape the male gaze. Presenter: Emma Barnett Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Manager: Steve Greenwood.

Episode 5 is with the incredibly inspirational Jessica Hepburn. This was such an awesome chat and I really don't want to give too much away on here. Jessica is an author ("In Pursuit of Motherhood" and "21 Miles") ... She is a Chanel Swimmer and her swim story is a thing of beauty, that resonated with me on a very personal level. Enjoy!!
When we met up with Jessica Hepburn for episode 43, two things came to mind. The first is how we met her, which you'll discover in the recording which was had a time of new starts for all of us and the importance of 43 which Jessica explains to us, and oddly how this is indeed, episode 43! It's fair to say that her pursuit of motherhood is just one of many parts of this pond to peak adventurer's story! Jessica has been on many journeys herself and inspired others; maybe she'll do that for you as you find out more about struggling well. How to follow and connect with Jessica Jessica's website, and you can follow her on Facebook, and Instagram. Buy Jessica's books: In Pursuit of Motherhood or shop B-Corp at World of Books. 21 Miles
In this episode of the Conceive Baby Podcast we talk about fertility, as always, but from a different perspective. We discuss a wonderful, collaborative, celebratory event, which is on a mission to change the conversation around fertility and infertility. Fertility Fest. I speak with inspiring founder Jessica Hepburn who shares with us her personal journey, as well as insights into the evolution of Fertility Fest and what you can expect at this year's event. Jessica Hepburn is one of the leading patient voices on fertility, infertility and assisted conception. She is the author of two books The Pursuit of Motherhood (2014) and 21 Miles: Swimming in search of the meaning of motherhood which is launching in a few weeks. In 2016, following her ten year tenure as Executive Director of the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith in London she founded Fertility Fest, the world's first arts festival dedicated to fertility, infertility, modern families and the science of making babies. The third edition of the festival will be held in Barbican, London from 23rd April to 18th May 2018. For more information head to www.fertilityfest.com www.jessicahepburn.com
What an amazing discussion. It was such a pleasure to speak with Jessica Hepburn, one of the leading patient voices on fertility, infertility and assisted conception. Jessica has also just been named Woman of the Week in Stylist Magazines Visible Woman Series. A year long celebration of women who are making a difference to society. Jessica joined us live from London and shared her very personal journey through infertility, miscarriage and IVF to becoming an author and founder of the worlds first arts festival dedicated to fertility, infertility, modern families and the science of making babies, Fertility Fest. Fertility Fest is a week-long programme of events, entertainment, discussion, debate, support and solidarity from Tuesday 8th May to Sunday 13th of May at London's Bush Theatre. We also got a hint that Fertility Fest may be coming to Australia! Here's hoping! I hope you enjoy this inspiring discussion.

We're back for 2020, after a slight break. Sorry if you've missed us. Hopefully, you've subscribed so you get this episode as soon as it lands. We really need your support from subscriptions as the podcast world gets busier ( which is a brilliant thing ) as we want to make sure all our hard work gets heard. Plus we've nearly published 300 episodes which means we are going to have to be moving some as you aren't meant to have more than that on your feed. We'll keep you posted on where the old episodes will be, so fear not. Our first episode of 2020 is a return to our ‘Meet the Maker's where we want to hear about the things you have created as a result of your fertility struggles. Natalie chats to the delightful Lucy from the Rainbow Running & Cake Club. Kate was AWOL while Natalie interviewed Lucy, however, you'll hear what Kate thought to Natalie's chat with Lucy and also Kate talking about OHSS (Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) and the different types of miscarriage. Lucy started trying to conceive five years ago, she conceived early on but unfortunately suffered a miscarriage and then struggled to conceive again. Fast forward a few more years and Lucy and her partner started IVF. The first round was unsuccessful and unfortunately, Lucy developed OHSS. She knew very little about OHSS at this time and felt very alone and frightened. Lucy was nervous about restarting treatment but happily, she conceived on her second cycle with a frozen embryo transfer. Sadly, since the birth of her daughter, Lucy has experienced another two miscarriages and felt very low. Feeling inspired At this difficult time, Lucy was reading https://www.thefertilitypodcast.com/bonus-episode-fertility-fest-2018-does-motherhood-make-you-happy/ ( 21 Miles by Jessica Hepburn) and felt inspired by her motivation and desire to challenge herself. This inspired Lucy to start running and find a passion that she didn't know she had! She felt that is running made her feel this good, maybe this could help other women going through similar difficult times. Lucy set up a website and Instagram accounts to launch the Rainbow Running & Cake Club and organized her first run in Hertfordshire followed by cake! Get your trainers on You don't have to run if you don't want to, walking is fine too! So far Lucy has organized runs in Hertford, Leamington Spa, Windsor, Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester, and Richmond and is planning UK domination! Lucy says that the runs are so uplifting and there is a power in being together and knowing that you're not alone. Rainbow Yoga As well as running clubs, Lucy is launching rainbow yoga sessions as well as a fabulous Yoga retreat. You can find out more about Lucy and the Rainbow Running and Cake Club via her website and Instagram below. Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) OHSS can occur during fertility treatment when the ovaries are over-stimulated to produce many follicles. Mild OHSS is very common and women may notice abdominal swelling and feel uncomfortable and suffer from nausea. However severe OHSS is a serious condition that can affect other organs in the body and, although rare, can be life-threatening. Women are monitored carefully during ovulation stimulation treatment to reduce the risks of OHSS developing. Explaining the different types of miscarriage There are so many different types of miscarriage and it can feel confusing when hearing these different terms. Kate explains the differences in all types of miscarriage. Chemical Pregnancy: The term given to a pregnancy that ends in a miscarriage before the first 5 weeks of pregnancy. Threatened miscarriage: This is when a woman experiences bleeding or pain that ‘threatens' to develop into a miscarriage. When examined the entrance to the uterus is closed and the risk may resolve, or a woman may go on to miscarry. Inevitable miscarriage: This is as it sounds, the entrance to the uterus is open and a miscarriage will occur. Complete miscarriage:...
Jessica's ‘adventure activism' is, by her own admission, a bit of an accident as she hates exercise and considers herself to be the most unlikely athlete. However, over the last decade she has been taking on some of the world's most iconic physical and mental endurance challenges to turn the sadness she's been through into something positive and at the same time raise awareness of what it means to struggle to conceive and to encourage new ways of thinking about family. She has run the London Marathon; swum the English Channel; and is still on her journey to climb Mount Everest and complete the iconic ‘Pond to Peak' Challenge. She is a member of the British Mountaineering Council; The Ramblers; The Long Distance Walkers Association; and the Serpentine, Hampstead Ponds and Dover Open Water Swimming Clubs; and has used her sporting challenges to raise thousands of pounds for charity including Fertility Network UK. Olive knows that having children is not for her and recently broke up with her longterm boyfriend because he wanted to try for a baby and she didn’t — and this book explores the obstacle course of adulthood, navigating key life milestones, and how their friendships grow and change as they each figure out their own paths Today's guest is Jessica Hepburn is author/ arts producer, adventure activist — and one of the UK's leading patient voices on fertility, infertility, the science of making babies and modern families. Having been through eleven rounds of IVF, she has become a pioneer in raising awareness of what it means to struggle to create the family you long for, and how to live as big and bravely as possible when life doesn't go to plan. I absolutely love this episode and hearing about Jessica’s story. Covid-19 and fertility treatments We appreciate given the current crisis you may well be worrying about what covid-19 means for your fertility treatments, and therefore at the beginning of this episode we give you an update on the current advice. At the moment, there is limited guidance out there, however this will likely change in the coming days/weeks. Currently, the HFEA recommend that you contact your clinic for advice as each clinic will likely have contingency plans in place. We plan to chat with experts this coming week and will, of course, keep you informed of any developments that relate to fertility treatments. If you are required to self-isolate over the coming weeks, then you can be reassured that The Fertility Podcast will be keeping you entertained. So, make sure you subscribe so not to miss an episode! Parenthood in Mind Next up, Natalie and Kate talk to Julianne Boutaleb who is a peri-natal psychologist and Clinical Director and Founder of the Parenthood in Mind practice. Julianne works with women and couples who have experienced trauma in relation to birth and miscarriage but also with women who suffer with fertility trauma. Typical patients that Julianne works with are couples who have concerns with regards to known genetic issues, couples who are facing assisted conception, couples who have had failed cycles or reproductive injuries and those contemplating donor conception, surrogacy or adoption to create or complete their family. Many couples who have previously experienced miscarriage come to Julianne as they have a fear – either physically or emotionally of a miscarriage reoccurring. Tokophobia Tokophobia is the fear of being pregnant or giving birth. Tokophobia may occur in women who have never given birth to a child, but it may also affect women who have had prior traumatic pregnancy or birth experiences. Protecting your relationship Couples who don't conceive are 3 times more likely to separate or divorce than couples who do conceive. Clinics are starting to support couples more with regards to the emotional impact Often reaching the menopause can be a trigger for women who haven't been successful in conceiving through assisted conception. Julianne helps couples rewrite their ‘happy ever after' story without children. Fertility Trauma* The term Fertility Trauma helps to highlight that struggling to conceive is a true trauma and this also includes ‘perceived' trauma. Fertility trauma is not just depression, anxiety or stress but is your brain going in to ‘fight and flight' mode.
In the final episode of this series, Izzy is joined by author, arts producer and adventure activist, Jessica Hepburn. Having been diagnosed with unexplained infertility and undergone eleven rounds of IVF, Jessica talks openly about how it feels to struggle to create the family you long for, and explains why she is dedicating this decade of her life to raising awareness of the subject.
In the first episode of my new series Let's Talk Fertility, I'm sharing my own fertility story with you. I'm interviewed by Jessica Hepburn, fertility author, campaigner and friend.
Jessica is an Author, and Adventure Activist. In her early forties after the eleventh round of unsuccessful IVF, she decided it was time to take on another adventure. It became the start of a journey in pursuit of the answer to the question: ‘Does motherhood make you happy or can you have a fulfilling life without children?’ What she’s learning is that there are many routes to creating a family if you want one but also that life is full of many different adventures. That’s what led her to dedicating the fourth decade of her life to taking on some of the world’s most iconic endurance challenges to raise awareness and money for both adults and children without the families they long for. In 2015, Jessica swam the English Channel in 17 hours, 44 minutes and 30 seconds, raising over £25,000 for adults and children without the families they long for. She said it was like her version of 'giving birth.' Read about it in her new book: 21 Miles: Swimming in search of the meaning of motherhood. In 2017, Jessica ran the London Marathon for Fertility Network UK, raising over £5,000 for the charity. In 2020, Jessica plans on summiting Mount Everest, which when she completed, will make her the first women to have ever completed these two challenges called “Pond to Peak”. **Please note during this episode we do talk about fertility, IVF and miscarriages. If you are in a sensitive place right now regarding these issues, please make sure you feel strong enough to listen, and have support available. This episode will always be available for you to listen to at a later date.** Show Notes How Jessica would describe herself Coming from an arts family Running a theatre by her early 30s Not being sporty when she was younger Meeting the man she wanted to have a family with Trying to get pregnant A decade long struggle to conceive Her mission to become a mother and how it took over her life Wanting to take back control in her 40s How she got through it while living her life in limbo The shame around fertility problems for both men and women The impact on her marriage Turning 40 and starting to write her first book - The Pursuit of Motherhood 43 - and getting on with the rest of your life Exercise and the role it played during her quest for motherhood. I met Jessica through the Fertility Fest; a festival for anyone exploring their fertility journeys. It is a place for both mothers in arms and mothers in their hearts and it is a space Jessica is hoping can be a nurturing environment for all women. We as women are stronger united than divided, and the “haves” and “have-nots” in the fertility community seem unavoidably separated, but they shouldn’t be. We discuss the philosophy behind the Fertility Fest but also Jessica’s endurance challenges, which have ended up being more symbolic of Jessica’s quest for motherhood than she had imagined. Please e-mail with any comments, or if you have a story to tell yourself at reachhappilyeverafter@gmail.com.
