On this episode of The Debrief we are going to be looking at Post Traumatic Stress and Post Traumatic Growth. These are two topics that I am extremely passionate about because, as you might imagine, each incident we cover on The Debrief has had a profound effect on everyone involved. Over the years that I have been working with teams and the years I have hosted this show I have seen people destroyed by their experiences. Yet I have also seen others use the trauma they endured to build a stronger, happier and more purposeful version of themselves. Although I have certainly seen patterns, I have always wondered what separated these two groups of people, which is why I wanted to have this discussion on Post Traumatic Growth. Simply put there is a LOT we can do to prepare for and respond to traumatic incidents that will reduce the fallout to those involved. All of my guests today have a different perspective on Post traumatic growth. Dr. Richard Tedeschi is the world's foremost authority on Post Traumatic Growth and literally coined the expression. His work forms the foundation for most PTG programs. Josh Goldberg is the CEO of Boulder Crest Foundation, a nonprofit whose Warrior Path and Struggle Well programs have reached over 100,000 people. And Finally Chief Chad Kasmar is the current Chief of Police in Tucson Arizona. Following the suicide of a friend and former fellow officer Chad has led a revolution in the way his city prepares and supports their staff for traumatic incidents. He has a truly unique perspective on the implementation of these types of programs.I hope you enjoy this deep dive into Post Traumatic Growth and that this episode inspires you and your agencies to improve on the way we prepare and treat our warriors and first responders. Mood: therapy, mental health focused, upbeat, validating WELCOME BACK! It's been a (longer than anticipated) minute since we've last chatted, but This Is Fine! Podcast is back in action after Dominique moved to Paris (salut de la France, tout le monde!). Perhaps over this past summer (and start to autumn) you felt a little bit of FOMO, or got jealous of someone's vacation updates on TikTok and Instagram. Maybe you haven't gotten promoted yet, or saw that everyone in your age group has begun to buy a house. Have you gone to one too many baby showers and thought, this is not where I thought I'd be at [age redacted] years old?! Don't worry, we called the therapist for you. Dr. Kevin Gilliland, PsyD, our trusted on-call (literally) clinical psychologist is here to talk about the BS of the ‘societal timeline' (the milestones you're ‘supposed' to meet, and when)... plus the idea of FOMO, comparison, and searching for what we really want in life. Sound good? Prepare for some validation. You can find more of Dr. Gilliland on his podcast, Struggle Well, Live Well, Worry Less (on Spotify and Apple), and our own episodes 27, 24 and 2. Resource mentioned in episode: Word of the year PDF (Unravel Your Year by Susannah Conway) We'll be back soon with updates from Paris! What do you want to hear next? How did you like today's episode? Dr. Guy Richard preaches on James 5:7-11 in his sermon “How to Struggle Well”.
Michael Kelly, portfolio manager and global head of multi-asset at PineBridge Investments, says that investors should expect volatile choppy markets -- moving sideways at best -- while the economy pivots away from the rising inflation and interest rate trend, but that investors shouldn't expect much good news until at least May of 2023. Kelly says that he expects China to pivot on some of its policies early in 2023, which will make its economy and stock market the only market with higher cash flows and an easier central bank come springtime, encouraging investment there while the rest of the world markets are volatile and choppy. He also suggests that investors will want to take the reasonable yields they can get on bonds while waiting for the equity markets to improve. Also on the show today, Tom Lydon, vice chairman at VettaFi goes international with a trend-following pick for his ETF of the Week, Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.com discusses all of the action around jobs and the labor market this week and what it portends for the news cycle and the stock market, and Chuck answers a listener's question about tax-loss harvesting, which he notes might be as popular with investors this year as holiday shopping is with consumers.
Josh Goldberg & Ken Falke join the show to discuss Operation Struggle Well. Boulder Crest's ‘Struggle Well' mantra takes on the crisis of suicide and stress rampant among our veterans and first responders.
Brett was accepted into West Point and Annapolis, but a poor decision almost derailed his career before it could begin. While at West Point and in the Military Brett was selected for and participated in activities and programs that stretched the limits of his capabilities and his influence. Whether participating in a pilot CTLT program with a Ranger Battalion, leading Avaition units, or expanding the reach and influence of his organization as an ORSA Brett gravitated towards difficult tasks. That didn't end upon retirement. Brett founded an online application for Online Betting and Fantasy Sports. This is his story. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/joe-harrison0/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joe-harrison0/support
It is SO impressive what The Boulder Crest Foundation and The Boulder Crest Institute are doing for our Combat Veterans to help them heal from traumas. Their work is groundbreaking and it's working! The focus is on the teachings of posttraumatic growth. Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman of Boulder Crest, is a 21-year combat veteran of the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community and retired Master Chief Petty Officer. He believes there's no greater mission than helping Veterans, first responders, and their families rediscover hope, purpose, and a future that is truly worth living. It's his passion. He spends the majority of his time educating the public and private sectors on the issues surrounding the long-term care of our returning military personnel and their families from the last 20 years of war. Ken is excited about the breakthrough success he's seeing at Boulder Crest, and says this is the coolest thing he's ever worked on and he's worked on some pretty cool things. Ken is highly respected around the world as an innovative and forward-thinking leader on the subjects of wounded warrior care, military and veteran transition, counterterrorism, military training, and innovative technology development. I'm so honored to be able to shine a light on Ken Falke and Boulder Crest this Veterans Day and every day. To help transform 'struggle to strength', Boulder Crest offers 2 peaceful locations for struggling veterans to come spend a week, spend quality time, be embraced, understood and heal. One location is in Bluemont, VA and the other in Sonoita, Arizona. Plus they offer many other programs across the country where those who are struggling can get the quality help they need to find the path to a life worth living. Their efforts are working. The Boulder Crest locations feature things like ADA-accessible cabins with plenty of amenities for comfort and for families to join in. Therapeutic and recreational activities like equine, archery, art, music, labyrinth walks, and fishing. And optional organized group activities, like barbecues and bonfires, which create opportunities for guests to connect with, and draw strength from, one another in what they've coined as a 'warrior's paradise'. The Boulder Crest Institute, located in Bluemont VA, serves as the hub for the development, delivery, study, and scaling of their groundbreaking, Posttraumatic Growth-based programs. The Institute led the development of the Warrior PATHH curriculum, which is now delivered in nine locations across the country: Boulder Crest Virginia, Boulder Crest Arizona, Boulder Crest's Mobile Training Team, and through partnerships in Florida (GratitudeAmerica), Georgia (Camp Southern Ground), South Carolina (Big Red Barn Retreat), Maine (Travis Mills Foundation), Arkansas (Sheep Dog Impact Assistance), and Washington State (Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation). The Institute is also currently leading programs in Miami, Florida and Tucson, Arizona, to integrate Struggle Well Training and Posttraumatic Growth into their police departments. This project is made possible by the support of the FirstNet by AT&T, the Gary Sinise Foundation, and the Community-Police Relations Foundation. Since the Institute's opening in January 2018, Boeing has been an invaluable strategic partner and supporter, enabling them to develop and deliver training on Posttraumatic Growth for the mental health community. Ken Falke and Boulder Crest Institute Co-Founder & Exec. Dir. Josh Goldberg, also co-authored a book that's taken the mental health world by storm. It's called "Struggle Well: Thriving in the Aftermath of Trauma." It's changing the lives of Veterans, First Responders and anyone who's been worn down by 'struggling'. "Struggle" the authors say, "is the story of every great leader, every great man, and every great woman. Through encountering obstacles, heroes are tested and forged into becoming the great, authentic human beings they are destined to be." I love this quote on their website: " It's time to learn how to struggle well. Because struggle is a terrible thing to waste." Ken Falke and Josh Goldberg, the authors of Struggle Well, have trained more than 40,000 people in the principles and practices of how to Struggle Well. Boulder Crest Foundation is doing amazing work and would love your support. Here's where you can find out more about them and donate. And if you want to meet a real hero please take a few minutes to meet Ken Falke, Founder & Chairman Boulder Crest Foundation, in this warm podcast conversation from The Debbie Nigro Show. The world is a better place because of people like Ken Falke.

How do you overcome struggles in your life?In this episode of the Happy Hustle Podcast, I share with you how struggling well can change your life. As Ray Dalio, a billionaire investor says "Everyone struggles." This is a concept that really resonated with me because adversity is inevitably going to strike in your life. But you have the choice of how well you struggle through it. Life can be so difficult at times but how your life appears for you and your reality is how well you struggle. Every failure gives you a chance to grow and develop. You just need to make the decision to take action and put things right. You have to learn from those failures and use them as fertilizer in order to achieve greatness. Find gratitude within your journey and always remember, there is an answer to every question and a solution for every problem. The key is knowing how to struggle well for you to find the path to success and happiness. Almost everyone now talks about how critical Magnesium is for us, Dr. Hyman, Andrew Huberman, all of the health industry authorities, and doctors. There is a long list of symptoms and diseases that can be eased or even treated with magnesium. In fact, way back magnesium was a critical element. Doctors used magnesium for all kinds of conditions, from arrhythmia to constipation, to preeclampsia, and even seizures. For some reason, now doctors use it as a last resort and put patients on high doses of Magnesium if they are at risk of premature labor, seizure, and other very serious conditions. It's really essential to our health and our wellbeing. This is a huge problem because magnesium deficiency can increase your risk of all diseases and keep you from performing optimally. We shouldn't wait until we are Magnesium deficient! And even more critically, there's not just one type of magnesium. How well do we struggle? It is easy to show Jesus when everything is going perfectly, but in the moments that we are going through something pretty devastating, it is a completely different story. How well we struggle is an indication of how well we are tied into Jesus.

Jesus' decisive victory against the enemy has freed us up for the fight against sin in our lives. So how can we struggle well? This week we're continuing in our new series, a four-week journey through some of the principles that Pastor Ben explores in his brand new book, Rest & War! Because of what Jesus has done, we are able to be victors instead of victims. But first we have to shift our perspective on how to struggle against temptation. What does it look like for the followers of Jesus to have our beliefs shape our behaviors instead of chasing after the temptations and desires of the world? Key Verses // James 1:14-18—Do you feel frustrated by a pattern of personal failures, overwhelmed by a chaotic culture, or disillusioned by a lack of meaning in everyday life? Your struggles do not mean you're doomed. They're actually a sign that you are alive. Now it's a question of whether you will struggle well. Pastor Ben's new book, Rest & War, is a field guide designed to equip you to walk elegantly through the battlefield of life. Rest & War releases on January 25, 2022. New perspective & I can't wait to share it. Thanks for coming along for the ride. ᏩᏙ❤️
A few years ago, a friend of mine got me into cycling. What started as a 10-12 mile ride turned into 25 miles, 30 miles, and before you know it I was encouraged to do a 60-mile race. I remember wanting to give up several times on that route. At about mile 45, my friend could see my dilemma and encouraged me to keep going. He even had me talk about other things to get my mind off the struggle. Before I knew it, I was coasting (and fuming in) at the 60-mile marker and finish line to cheers of encouragers. I felt like I won the Tour de France. Jesus is aware of the struggle of His companions on this ministry trek. On their part, there is a failure to see ‘what is about to come.' Jesus uses a seed of grain to cast a big picture of hope and sets their gaze ahead, not behind. May you struggle well.

Welcome back to Warriors Unmasked! Today is going to be a good one. We are excited to introduce you to our guest and good friend Ken Falke. He has founded two for-profit and two nonprofit companies, and is an award-winning business owner as well as an author of the book “Struggle Well”. We honor Ken not only for the incredible service he has done for North America but also for all that he has accomplished afterward. Looking at his list of accomplishments would be daunting for anyone but for those who have experienced trauma or deal with PTSD and anxiety it may seem downright impossible. Find encouragement as Ken talks about how it's possible to not only live after trauma but to THRIVE.
