This week Mickey-Jo headed to the Lyric Hammersmith in London to see GHOSTS, Gary Owen's new contemporary adaptation of the classic Henrik Ibsen play. In this new updated version, Victoria Smurfit stars as Helena Alving alongside Callum Scott Howells as her son Oz. This world premiere production re-situates this classic story into the modern day, and follows in the footsteps of similarly re-lensed classics in the Lyric's recent history including A Doll's House and Accidental Death of an Anarchist. Check out this full review to find out what Mickey-Jo thought of this play as a piece, its themes, and its relationship to the original text...• 00:00 | introduction 02:00 | adaptation 08:21 | overview / themes 14:32 | the writing 19:08 | performances•About Mickey-Jo:As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. Episode 092: A Raisin in the Sun by Lorainne Hansberry Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Tinuke Craig Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. When Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun opened in New York in 1959, its author became the first African-American woman to have a play on Broadway, and this with her debut at age of 29. The play was ground-breaking for its realist portait of a black working-class family, spotlighting their personal dreams and the public prejudice they confront. We recorded this episode shortly after an acclaimed new production of the play completed its run at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London, and I am delighted to talk with the production's director, Tinuke Craig, about this landmark play.

A recent graduate from LAMDA, Ned Costello has been making quite the impact on the theatre scene. Since his debut understudying Nero in the Lyric Hammersmith's production of Britannicus last year, Ned has gained a reputation for playing being one of few young actors truly able to capture the essence of a theatrical villain. He's currently preparing to open the Park Theatre's highly anticipated revival of Philip Ridley's Leaves of Glass where he will play the central character of Steven. After a period of playing to large houses like the Lyric Hammersmith and Nottingham Playhouse, this will also mark a return for Ned performing in an intimate studio space with the play arriving at Park Theatre's PARK90 auditorium. In their first major interview, Ned Costello opens up about the past year - stepping onto the Lyric Hammersmith stage last minute to play the legendary Roman Emperor Nero and then playing opposite Olivier Award winners Adrian Scarborough and Sophie Thompson in The Clothes They Stoop Up In. His debut has excited audiences and his peers as anticipation grows around Leaves of Glass. Throughout our interview, he shares his unwavering enthusiasm for the industry that he's joined. After finishing a Politics and International Relations degree at University of Bristol, his transition to acting was perhaps not unexpected after spending some time with NYMT - he even shares he was mentored by West End leading lady Alex Young! When we ask him if he'd be interested in returning to musicals, he immediately sprites up - expressing his love for Standing at the Sky's Edge and Cabaret which have opened to huge acclaim. Nevertheless, Ned Costello remains one of the most exciting new actors to emerge onto the stage and we look forward to Leaves of Glass and anything he does next.Leaves of Glass plays at Park Theatre on 11 May - 3 June and tickets are available now.

In today's episode, we are pleased to share with you our very first radio play. The play we will be sharing with you today is called Gravity and it was written by Katie Caden. Caden is an alumnus of Soho Writers Lab and has had her work performed at Vault festival, the Bunker Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Theatre 503, Camden People's Theatre and Battersea Arts Centre. Her last show 'Paper Straws', produced by her theatre company PearShaped, won the Vault Origins award and her first play 'Are You Happy Now' was shortlisted for Lyric Hammersmith's Original Theatre Voices competition. Caden's writing explores contemporary issues, and interrogates the way we live our lives today, experimenting with form and often using humour as a way to communicate serious issues. She writes to understand other people, and herself, exploring why we behave in the way we do? Why do we make poor decisions and repeat our mistakes? And what drives us to hurt each other or conversely express our love? Writing 'Gravity' in response to Unfeeling, the theme for this year's issue, allowed Caden to consider these things and, in particular, how people can express their love through their actions whilst saying they don't care, and conversely how we can tell people we love them and then behave like we don't. All the characters battle with these impulses and the push and pull between feeling too much and feeling nothing at all. Alongside this, Caden has included technology almost as an extra character, interfering with these dynamics, pulling attention away from the situation at hand, and impacting the characters' ability to feel to the fullest extent. Austerity and the dangerously stretched state of the NHS have never cut so deep. And yet, that statement felt just as true back in 2015 when Iphigenia In Splott, Gary Owens' lauded monodrama reimagining of Euripedes' Iphigenia In Aulis, first debuted. It's only right that Iphigenia In Splott is back now, once more starring the phenomenal Sophie Melville as Effie – our Greek heroine via Cardiff. Effie's life is a mess of drink, drugs and drama every night, and a hangover worse than death the next day – until one night gives her the chance to be something more. In Greek myth, the story of Iphigenia is a tragedy: a young girl sacrificed for male hubris, ambition and legacy, and Mickey chats to Sophie about the Iphigenias, the Effies, of today, how they're being sacrificed and why the time is ripe for revolution.Iphigenia In Splott is at the Lyric Hammersmith, London, until October 22. Patrick Marber's play Closer depicts a merry-go-round of metropolitan relationships powered by sex and betrayal. Its clever and candid dissection of the destructive power of sexual desire hit a contemporary nerve when it premiered in 1997. Clare Lizzimore, director of a new production at the Lyric Hammersmith, joins me to explore how the play's unflinching sexual politics has aged twenty-five years later.

Today's episode features writer and actor Paterson Joseph, author of the play "Sancho, An Act of Remembrance", which he has been performing for some 10 years and brings back to the theatre next year. He has also recently completed a book about Sancho, this incredible man who was born on a slave ship in the Atlantic and died a businessman in London. Sancho's life was lived to the full: he composed popular music, corresponded with the great and the good of the day and became the first man of African heritage to vote in a UK general election. Looking at the world through Sancho's eyes we see a strange place of terrible inequality yet great opportunity, we are forced to address the issues of slavery and racism but also come upon acts of great kindness and discover a true love story. It is a brief glimpse of London in the 18th Century "in colour".Probably best known as an actor Paterson Joseph has appeared in lead roles with the RSC and National Theatre. Sarah Hadland may be known to many as Miranda’s best mate Stevie in the BBC sitcom, but she’s often busy on stage, having recently appeared in plays at the Almeida, Donmar Warehouse and Trafalgar Studios. She’s currently starring in the Lyric Hammersmith’s production of Michael Frayn’s classic comedy Noises Off which runs in the West End at the Garrick Theatre, and we went backstage to chat to her about the comedy, keeping a stage-screen balance as an actor, and the incredibly famous guests the show has welcomed to the stalls. .The music used in this podcast is Acid Trumpet by Kevin McLeod, used under Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

After writing to one of the UK’s top casting directors, Pippa Ailion, at 14-years-old, Lucy May Barker bagged the role of Ilsa in the original London production of Spring Awakening. The show opened at the Lyric Hammersmith before transferring to the Novello Theatre in the West End. Sadly, the show didn’t get the ticket sales it deserved and closed within a few months of transferring. Since then Lucy has built a career in theatre having appeared in plays at the National, the Chichester Festival Theatre production of Sweeney Todd, alongside Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, and most recently in MAMMA MIA! Having spent three years playing Sophie in the UK and international touring production, Lucy is now doing it eight times a week at the Novello Theatre in the West End where the show is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, making it one of the longest running productions in history. After a bit of a hiatus while the InvisiYouth team wraps up building another NEW VIRTUAL PROGRAM, we got Dominique back in the studio for another episode in our career-finding guidebook theme. We know the drama arts is an interest for the illness/disability community, and many of the InvisiYouth family live with physical difference, so we wanted a guest expert that knows a thing or two about body positivity and fighting stigmas on disability. So…we got our Celebrity Ambassador, the stellar British actress and disability activist, Melissa Johns. She’s had TV roles like Imogen Pascoe on ITV’s British Soap, Coronation Street, to her current stage role of Emilia in OthelloMacbeth at London’s Lyric Hammersmith. Born without her right hand and forearm, Melissa has lots of perspectives on getting into the acting industry, being a drama teacher, and cofounding a drama workshops nonprofit, TripleC, which enhances lives of people with disabilities. In this episode, Melissa and Dominique chat all about the misconceptions of being an actor with illness/disability and how to “read a room” instead of judging first impressions, build a list of tools anyone can add like to-go snacks, workouts, and organizer diaries if you want to be a balanced working actor, examine the vital reasons accurate casting and frequent representation of illness and disability on TV/film will improve society’s openness, and give away the best advice on maintaining confidence as an actor when between jobs and working with a diverse group of people. During that time she wrote a play called STUD about a gay footballer and now it's about to open at the Vaults Festival at The Network Theatre. My mind, body and soul is BLOWN! She is the embodiment of inspiring and happens to be hilarious at the same time!  ENJOY!!! https://vaultfestival.com/whats-on/stud/ @PalomaOakenfold @LiamFrankBergin #STUDplay “There are currently no openly gay or bi players at any level of male professional football in Britain.” Stonewall Tom’s sixteen. His family home is falling apart. His mum has left and his depressed Dad can’t pay the bills. The only light in Tom’s life is football: He lives it and breathes it. Going pro is Tom’s chance to make life better, for everyone…. But Tom has a secret, one that could cost him his career. We follow Tom as he weighs his dreams against each other because in professional football, you can’t have both. This week we are back to the usual style and Joining me on the Pod is the lovey Paloma Oakenfold. She is a truly one of the coolest people Ive ever met, I use the word cool a lot but Paloma is the definition in my opinion.  She's had a great journey with ups and downs, as we all do, but Paloma has the ability to turn the downs into ups and has been gracefully dancing her way through a career in this industry. When she falls, she gets straight back up, carries on and finds another interesting path to take. She is also just hilarious and full of banter. I loved recording this and I hope you love listening! Paloma is currently the Resident Assistant Director at the Lyric Hammersmith working on SEVENTEEN so go and check it out in March and April. Big Massive Love. ENJOY!!!
