Sometimes, when Paul and Eli ask a big name to join the podcast, they fully expect the answer to be No. So when comedy legend Robert Popper agrees to appear, the Cheap Chaps are going to have to pull out all the stops to make this episode special. Luckily, Robert has come prepared and he's brought along with him something sonically demented. It's been a guilty pleasure of Robert's for over 30 years and he's agreed to share it with CheapShow. Prepare your ears for something even Urinevision would reject. What is “Scared of Me”? Who is Clifford? You'll find out soon enough! Meanwhile, Paul has decided to make this week's “Price of Shite” extra special for their guest. He's tailored his cheap treasures around Robert's career… But Paul may have gotten a bit confused. As if that wasn't enough, we have another extra special guest who pops up to make for a grand finale! Cor blimey guv'nor! I can't believe my ears! Jo & Adam draw this year's "Smith & Waugh Big Satirical Summer Read" to a close with a deep dive into the novel everyone is reading, Rebecca F. Kuang's Yellowface. What is it actually a satire of? How is the satire working? And to what extent is satire an appropriate tool for interrogating questions about race and representation in contemporary culture? Adam & Jo also dissect some of the more extreme responses to the novel, especially on TikTok. Elsewhere in the episode they also pay tribute to Look Around You, the excellent Robert Popper satire currently available on iPlayer, and discuss some of the controversy surrounding this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Adam also shares a disturbing experience he had recently where a person he was dating turned out to be a Cheetah.
In this comedy improv series, Joe & David are driving their fictitous narrowboat down the canal and spot an old aquaintance Robin Cooper having a picnic. They stop for a chat and immediately regret it. Mr Cooper has soooo much to tell them, all about Lilian Driftwoods mother being poisoned by black milk and the wood carving he is doing for his wife who can count to 100 and smells of beautiful damp. He fills them in on his red setter business and tells them a couple of harrowing tales about maggot stuffed meat and ants. David & Joe can't wait to get back on the boat and pootle off to the genius bar to get David's laptop fixed. Robin Cooper is played by the brilliant Robert Popper. Episode Notes We discuss The Timewaster Letters Compendium by Robin Cooper (aka Robert Popper) as read by Robert Popper, Dawn French, Peter Serafinowicz, and Jonathan Keeble. The massive best-selling Timewaster Letters books featured the wonderfully silly letters of Robin Cooper (a.k.a. Friday Night Dinner creator Robert Popper) in which he shared his madcap ideas - and even madcapper inventions - with everyone from the British Halibut Association to the Peanut Council. The resulting replies, as well as Cooper's replies-to-these-replies, had a nation in hysterics. Letter-writing was never the same again.... And now, exactly 15 years, 5 months and 26 days after the first Timewaster Letters book hit our shelves, you can listen to these hilarious letters, as they're brought to life in this Audible exclusive by comedy giants Dawn French, Peter Serafinowicz and Robert Popper. The Timewaster Letters Compendium brings together The Timewaster Letters and Return of the Timewaster Letters along with exclusive audio content. There's a new Introduction by Popper, a chat with Serafinowicz reflecting on the 20 years since Popper sent off his first fateful letter. Plus, a world exclusive - The Cement Murder Mystery, the first thriller story penned by Robin Cooper himself and read by Jonathan Keeble. We don't want to make promises, but it might also be the worst-written story of all time. You'll also get to hear a selection of Popper's world-famous prank phone calls, in which he poses as the hapless and hopeless Robin Cooper. Robert Popper is a writer, producer and performer, best known for creating the Channel 4 smash hit comedy_ Friday Night Dinner_, as well as the award-winning spoof BBC2 science show Look Around You. He has also worked on many of Britain's top comedy shows including Peep Show, The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd and Stath Lets Flats, as well as writing on South Park. Welcome back to YOU HAVE BEEN WATCHING, a podcast about British sitcoms. Join your hosts Tony Black & Robert Turnbull as they discuss Robert Popper's celebrated Channel Four sitcom FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER, which ran for six series between 2011-2020. Revolving around the Goodman's, a middle-class Jewish family, we see sons Adam & Jonny visit their parents Jackie & Martin each Friday night for what turns out to inevitably be a chaotic, strange or sometimes tense dinner, often dragging their weird neighbour Jim and the dog he owns but is terrified of, Wilson, into the madness. A cult show that grew into a favourite across several generations, what made the show such a success? Does it deserve to be heralded as the defining British family sitcom of the 2010s? Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, cellist John Henry Crawford has already made strides in the field of classical music, in one case as First Prize winner of the 2019 International Carlos Prieto Competition; and more recently with this debut release, Dialogo. Crawford chose the title after the unaccompanied cello work by Hungarian composer, György Ligeti. In it, the cello portrays both voices, of the composer and the woman he'd fallen for, hence the “dialogue” depicted in the music. Mr. Crawford also shares the fascinating history of the cello he plays, which has been in his family for over a century. His grandfather, Dr. Robert Popper, saw “the writing on the wall” as Nazism was on the rise in Austria, made a decision that saved both his life and kept the instrument safe. Crawford shares the full story, as well as insight into the cello sonatas of Brahms and Shostakovich, in his conversation with John Pitman. Love seems to flow through each of the pieces that this American cellist plays and makes the voice of the cello a true treasure, rescued from almost certain

"Friday Night Dinner" writer Popper shares some truly bizarre offcuts including the fake CV that landed him his big break in comedy, a prank community woodland notice and a sitcom about a wasp. Clips performed by: David Holt, Alex Lowe, Toby Longworth and Lizzie Roper. Warning: This episode contains strong language. He is the writer and producer of all 6 series of Channel 4's Friday Night Dinner, he co-created and starred in BBC 2's Look Around You with Peter Serafinowicz, produced the Bafta-winning Peep Show, wrote on season 14 of South Park, and script-edited British TV comedies The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd and Him & Her. TV writer Robert Popper joins me for a chat this week, fresh off the sixth series of his Channel 4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner. Robert has been involved in some of the best British comedy of the last 20 years; he co-wrote the cult favourite Look Around You, a spoof science documentary series that ran from 2002 to 2005, and worked as a script editor on Peep Show, The Inbetweeners and The IT Crowd. He is also the alter ego of Robin Cooper, author of The Timewaster Letters. He tells me how he made an artform out of writing insane things to strangers; the unorthodox way he broke into the television world (it also involved letter-writing); and why in comedy, the story must always come before the jokes.

This week we review - Friday Night Dinner (Series 1 Episode 1)Friday Night Dinner depicts Shabbat dinner in the middle-class secular Jewish Goodman family, reflecting writer and producer Robert Popper's own secular Jewish upbringingEvery Friday night, twenty-something brothers Adam and Jonny Goodman return to their parents' home for dinner.Adam and Jonny think of the weekly event as a necessary annoyance, - necessary because they get fed, and annoying because, well, they have to spend the evening with Mum and Dad. It's not that Mum and Dad aren't wonderful. They really are. But Dad slugs ketchup straight from the bottle, Mum is obsessed with Masterchef and even Grandma likes to wear her new bikini around the house. As for the next generation, there is much consternation that Jonny's girlfriend, Alison, is nothing less than 'made-up' and not even the Internet can sort out a "female" for Adam. Maybe this is because Adam writes jingles for toilet roll adverts, and Jonny's favourite party trick is to jump out of bin-liners onto unsuspecting victims. Of course every family has its foibles, its rituals and its eccentricities. It's just that the Goodmans have made something of an art form of theirs...Written & Created by Robert PopperProduced By Robert PopperA Popper Pictures / Big Talk Production for Channel 4.Friday Night Dinner is available to watch at: https://bit.ly/2OtBkBcAnd available to buy at: https://bit.ly/2EEXTxmComedy Slab is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube.Subscribe for a new episode each Monday.Get in touch - we're @ComedySlab on Twitter and ComedySlab on Facebook.

Is boredom under threat? There are more TV channels than we can count, Smartphones keep us engaged around the clock, and the constant white noise of social media coerces us to always 'interact'. In fact, there is so much to stimulate our everyday lives in this digital age that we need never be bored ever again. So do we still need to be bored? And what would we miss if we did eliminate boredom completely from our lives? The happily bored Phill Jupitus takes a creative look at our attitude to this misunderstood emotion. He will examine what boredom is, and how it has influenced our leisure time, our workplaces, our creativity and our evolution. Phill will examine its impact on comedy, art, music, and television, taking us from punk to prison, from J. R. R. Tolkien to Sherlock Holmes, from Danish sex clubs to London's 'Boring Conference'. This will be a lively look at the simple, very real and essential emotion of boredom, and a stout defence of the right to sometimes just sit down and do nothing. Interviews include - the Reverend Richard Coles, the writer Natalie Haynes, the artist George Shaw, the comedy writer & producer Robert Popper, the psychologist Peter Toohey, the punk musician Gaye Black (formerly of The Adverts), the psychologist Sandi Mann, the BBC newsreader Simon McCoy, Dr Teresa Belton and the social media entrepreneur Jodie Cook.
