One in four college undergraduate women report being victims of sexual assault during their time in higher education, and most experts believe the numbers of full reports are much lower than what's happening on campus. Emily Burns and Olivia Erickson, two members of Simpson's Sexual Assault Response Advocates (SARA) program, come on the podcast this week to discuss how this student-led program provides help and support for students who've had unwelcome sexual experiences. This episode helps kick off April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Simpson and around the nation.

Hard on the heels of the ludicrous, offensive and insane article written by a professor at Brown University that we should "all" grant each other "Amnesty" for all the bad things "we" said to each other during the Wuhan Hysteria, Emily wrote one of the best rebuttals to that absurdity. I am delighted to welcome her to the Messy Times studios to discuss why the Left ruined the country, destroyed children's lives and are now trying to get us all to forget their horrendous perfidy. Those of us who in February 2020 were CORRECT in our assessments of the relative risks posed by the Wuhan Virus and spent the last 2+ years fighting absurd school shutdowns, business lockdowns, kabuki mask theatre and the utter corruption of the medical establishment don't need Amnesty. We were and are right. The awful people who did this to America's children need to be brought to justice. We're looking for Accountability while they are desperate for Amnesty which they are not going to get. For more of Emily's work, I invite you to join #TeamReality! Jack Absolute Flies Again, at the National Theatre, is an adaptation of Sheridan's comedy of manners The Rivals. Writers Richard Bean (who wrote One Man, Two Guvnors – a big hit) and Oliver Chris keep the original characters – Lydia Languish, Sir Anthony Absolute and the lexically challenged Mrs Malaprop – but move the action from 18th Century Bath to the Battle of Britain. Samira Ahmed talks to director Emily Burns about this, and to Peter Forbes, who plays Sir Anthony, about finding character in the comedy. Pianist and songwriter Joe Stilgoe on his new album, Theatre - which he describes as a love letter to the theatre - and performs for us live in the studio. In Paris, conceptual art has found itself in the dock, as rights of authorship over some of the artworks created by artist Maurizio Cattelan - including one of his most famous works,'La Nona Ora' (The Ninth Hour), a wax figure of Pope Jean Paul II struck by a meteor – are at the centre of a legal case brought by the French sculptor Daniel Druet. In the wake of the court's judgment, lawyer Mark Stephens, discusses the issues the case raises. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May

Here's the thing: A lot of us are lonely. Really lonely. And making friends? As an adult? It can feel kind of scary. Why does this matter? Well, Sherri Gordon on Very Well Mind cuts right to the chase: We want all that for you, so we're here with some advice on how to make friends Check out the people you work with One great way to make friends according to Dr. Miriam Kiramyer, a clinical psychologist interviewed by Emily Burns for The Cut is: “We all have workplace acquaintances that we know deep down could be something more. Dr. Kirmayer suggests taking the leap to growing those relationships. Find a common denominator you can bond over, like a shared hobby or interest! You don't have to talk about work. “Making an effort to gradually open up about different parts of your life, that can help to deepen that sense of connection,” said Kirmayer. Talk about your life, what you like to do in your free time, etc. Perhaps set up a Zoom coffee chat with your fave colleague or schedule a hangout with the neighbor you always joke with in the hallway. Very Well Mind has a slew of suggestions, but one that resonated with us is: “Reach Out to Neighbors “Many people don't realize they have a potential friend living right next door or across the street. They give the courtesy wave and immediately close their door, not even trying to start a conversation. But there may be some really great friendships waiting for you right next door. So the next time you are both out, do more than just wave.” And then there is . . . Be Brave You have to be brave (especially if you have social anxiety or are an introvert) to put yourself out there and ask someone to go have coffee or take a walk. It's like dating. You can feel rejected. But even if you are? And they say no? Be proud. You were brave and that poor bugger is missing out. Friendship is hard and it takes work. Friendship isn't about instant gratification. It's about time and connection. It's about sticking it out even when your friend is a twerp. And social media? It makes us feel connected and isolated all at once because it takes up a lot of time that we used to use for hobbies and hanging out in real time. I think our favorite piece of advice is actually from Psychology Today where Andrea Brandt writes: “Seek, and you will find “You know how you won't meet new people? By living every day like it's identical to the previous one and not mixing up your routine at all. A strategy with a high-return rate is to go places or do things you enjoy and see who you meet there. If you like to read, join a book club. If you're more physically oriented, join a gym or take a class in a new sport: golf, tennis, tai chi. The more it involves interacting with other people, the better.” So there you go. Be brave. Look for people. Reach out. DOG TIP FOR LIFE We have a new puppy in the house. Sparty could chose to be friends or not. He's still deciding. Sometimes it's okay to be picky. Well, Sherri Gordon on Very Well Mind cuts right to the chase: “Research shows that after the age of 25, most adult friendships start to dwindle.1 Of course, some of this has to do with changing jobs, getting married, moving, and even having children. “Forming meaningful relationships may be harder as you get older, but it's well worth the effort. Good friendships have a myriad of benefits, including:2 Better immune functioning Decreased risk of disease, illness, and injury Increased longevity Reduced stress Speedier recovery when sick.” We want all that for you, so we're here with some advice on how to make friends Check out the people you work with One great way to make friends according to Dr. Miriam Kiramyer, a clinical psychologist interviewed by Emily Burns for The Cut is: “We all have workplace acquaintances that we know deep down could be something more. It's not hard to understand why people may feel deep discouragement about where things seem to be headed. I've heard several older people say things like, "I'm glad I won't live to see it." Paul Rosenberg has a great reminder that the sooner productive people understand what's going on, the faster the fall and reset will be. The battle over the amount of influence that parents may have on their child's public school curriculum is intensifying. Kerry McDonald has a beautiful rebuttal to a Washington Post editorial that asserts that parents have no right to shape their kids' curriculum. The fact that federal law enforcement is mobilizing to address the "threat" of parents disagreeing with the imposition of far left social justice programs in their public schools, is more than a little disturbing. Mark R. Schneider has an excellent article that asks if parents are a national security risk. One of the biggest favors you can do for your children is to teach them to think clearly and independently. They may still disagree with you, at times. But they'll be much better suited to sorting truth from fiction. Annie Holmquist has some great advice on teaching children to recognize propaganda. Here's a controversial conversation-starter: What if the right speed limit is how fast you're willing to drive? Eric Peters has a refreshingly different take that will make some folks uncomfortable and others nod in agreement. What do prohibition and vaccine mandates have in common? For starters, both are ideas that some consider so good, that they must be implemented by force. Emily Burns has a revealing essay on how vax mandates are the new prohibition. It's a sign of the times that satirical sites like the Babylon Bee are a more reliable source of truth than the mainstream media. The Bee's take on Pfizer's eagerness to vaccinate children is a perfect example. www.thebryanhydeshow.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loving-liberty/support

My path first crossed with Harriet in 2017 at Boardmasters Festival, I avidly followed her online before we finally met for coffee in January 2019. I've watched her grow and develop as a creative and she has always been there for me as an older creative sister as it were. Jessie and I became friends through Instagram I believe, meeting properly at Reading in 2019 for the first time. I adore Jessie's style of work, her creative drive and like me she is still studying her undergraduate degree. "If you want to feel really good about yourself, then open your own business"- Emily Burns, RMT ... Emily started her career path in massage therapy after deciding that her undergrad and future in psychology would mostly be research-based when what she really wanted to do was work with people. She has recently transitioned from an independent contractor to working for herself in her own space and she loves that “[she] gets to do what [she] wants and nobody cares.” From her undergrad days she was interested in brain injuries, and head and neck trauma which is what she enjoys treating most in her practice. After she experienced her own concussion in 2016 and works on her own recovery, she has more tools and confidence to help her own clients who also have concussions. She is a wine nerd and is pursuing courses which may lead to a second career as a sommelier. Emily is teaching in the massage therapy program and wants her students to be good massage therapists, not just have a goal to pass the exams. We talk about negotiating as a woman, touch on applying minimalism when making a career decision and also how women gravitate towards caring professions and it seems expected that we should give more without compensation. Karen Cox, Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, discusses her new book, Goat Castle: A True Story of Murder, Race, and the Gothic South (University of North Carolina Press, 2017), and what one murder case in 1930s Mississippi reveals about race relations, criminal justice, and life in the Jim Crow South. In 1932, the city of Natchez, Mississippi, reckoned with an unexpected influx of journalists and tourists as the lurid story of a local murder was splashed across headlines nationwide. Two eccentrics, Richard Dana and Octavia Dockery—known in the press as the "Wild Man" and the "Goat Woman"—enlisted an African American man named George Pearls to rob their reclusive neighbor, Jennie Merrill, at her estate. During the attempted robbery, Merrill was shot and killed. The crime drew national coverage when it came to light that Dana and Dockery, the alleged murderers, shared their huge, decaying antebellum mansion with their goats and other livestock, which prompted journalists to call the estate "Goat Castle." Pearls was killed by an Arkansas policeman in an unrelated incident before he could face trial. However, as was all too typical in the Jim Crow South, the white community demanded "justice," and an innocent black woman named Emily Burns was ultimately sent to prison for the murder of Merrill. Dana and Dockery not only avoided punishment but also lived to profit from the notoriety of the murder by opening their derelict home to tourists. Strange, fascinating, and sobering, Goat Castle tells the story of this local feud, killing, investigation, and trial, showing how a true crime tale of fallen southern grandeur and murder obscured an all too familiar story of racial injustice. Beth A. English is director of the Liechtenstein Institute's Project on Gender in the Global Community at Princeton University. She also is a past president of the Southern Labor History Association.

At this point, it seems like a hard trend. So it’s high time we talked about this stuff (pun intended)  if we want to future-proof this profession. To help us come to a joint understanding, if you will, about how we can best serve our clients in this area, we are joined by Emily Burns, who provides customized legal and consulting solutions specifically for the rapidly evolving cannabis industry. An A&E consultant, a psychiatrist, and two junior doctors swap notes on being disabled in the medical profession. Emergency medicine consultant, Dr Cieran McKiernan, speaks on the perils of self-diagnosis. He lost his leg after failing to treat a blister which became a 5cm-sq hole in his foot. Trainee GP, Dr Hannah Barham-Brown's wheelchair means she's regularly mistaken for a patient, while Dr Emily Burns spotted one patient's 'diagnosis' of Query Malingering - a euphemism for faking it - was actually Ehlers Danlos syndrome, a rare condition she has herself. Dr Caroline Walker says she hasn't got to go far to find doctors who, like her, have mental health difficulties. The foursome chat about the ups and down of the medical profession, the ambition to embrace diversity and how working less than full-time hours could be beneficial to all junior doctors. Cox talks about her book and her process for writing about a woman whose story was nearly hidden. In the Jim Crow south of the early 1930’s Natchez, Mississippi, Emily Burns was wrongly imprisoned for a murder she didn’t commit while the likely murderers became celebrated southern eccentrics who opened their home to goats, chickens, and-- for a price-- tourists. In this 25-minute podcast, Dr. Emily Burns of Save the Redwoods League discusses how scientists can now measure the carbon content of Redwood and Giant Sequoia trees, and how these trees hold much more than previously thought. Emily explains how the teams, consisting of scholars from Humboldt State University and UC Berkeley, have been able to examine one tree's history all the way back to 474 AD through its rings. She also explains the technique of measuring carbon in a tree (min. 10, not for those with Vertigo), the restoration of forests  (min. 14) and how Sacramento is including the forests as a tool in its climate change policy, economically incentivising forest owners to significantly reduce or halt the cutting down of forests (min. 16). The Redwood's resilience to environmental conditions (and to climate change) is another major benefit going forward.  Emily then closes with her favourite type of tree and trail.    Next time:  Sabrina Fendrick of Berkeley Patients Group on marijuana legalisation.  Feed your soul. The only native range of coastal and giant Sequoia redwood trees in the world is almost exclusively in California, on a narrow strip of land, starting in the Big Sur area and ending just past the Oregon border, and east-west from Sierra mountains to the coast.  Ninety-five percent of the ancient coastal redwood forest here, which was previously more than 2 million acres, has been logged, leaving only about 117 acres of redwood forest in the region.  The only other redwoods living in their native habitat is a species that was thought to be extinct, but a very small number of trees was discovered in China in the 1940's.  In recent decades, redwoods have been planted in locations around the world, but they are not the ancient forests in native habitat that we have here in California.  It's public knowledge that California redwoods are threatened by logging.  But what other threats exist and what can we do to protect them?  Joining us today in the studio to discuss these questions are Emily Burns, Director of Science for the Save the Redwoods League and Justin Augustine, Staff Attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity.  Joining us by phone is Bill Libby, Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley, in the Departments of Conservation and Natural Resources, Forestry, and Genetics.   The post Terra Verde – Protecting the Redwoods appeared first on KPFA.
