In this episode of Inside Golf Podcast, Andy sits down with Andrew Harvie, managing partner at Golf Club Atlas to discuss his two recent trips to Florida and Texas. They dive into the Florida private golf bubble and many of the exciting new developments in the Sunshine state, including Apogee, High Grove, the Ranch, Sandglass, Cabot Citrus Farms, and many others. Andrew then discusses his recent trip to Texas, which includes Childress Hall and Luling, two exciting new clubs from Tom Doak, Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, and Kyle Franz that are set to rival the Oohoopee Model. They identify which of these new developments will shine and receive critical acclaim, and the question that I continue to ponder, is any of this good for the game of golf—being that all of the best architecture is matriculating at ultra private destination clubs that 99.9% of the golfing public will ever get to experience. Thanks for listening and subscribing to Inside Golf Podcast with Andy Lack, cheers!

Almost exactly one year ago, a new legal tech startup, The Contract Network, came out of stealth, with a mission to “radically accelerate the time for contract negotiations'' through an AI-powered contract collaboration platform where all parties to a deal engage in a secure and neutral environment.  The company's cofounder and CEO, Jim Wagner, is a legal tech veteran with a track record of starting and leading successful companies in contracting and e-discovery, including having cofounded the e-discovery company DiscoverReady, having been president of the contract management and analytics company Seal Software, and, after Seal was acquired by DocuSign, having been vice president of agreement cloud strategy there.  With The Contract Network, Wagner aims to “change contracts for good” by solving the problem of contract negotiations taking too long and lacking tools for real-time collaboration, communication and transparency among all parties. On today's LawNext, Wagner is our guest, to talk about what he sees as broken with the traditional contract negotiation process and how The Contract Network offers a better option. Given his 30-year career in this industry, he also shares his thoughts on how it has evolved and where we are today.    Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. Burning Desire For Perfection Defines Winged Foot's Retired Manager As He Climbs An Apogee

Colin Burns had only 4.5 years of experience in hospitality when he applied for the club manager's position at Winged Foot, one of the most storied private golf clubs in the nation, if not the world. And, after an eight-month search process, he was selected as the club's next general manager – all 31 years ago when Colin had just crossed the line into his thirties. He recalls the president of the club asking him if Colin weren't a tad young for the job. Colin replied: It's not a permanent condition. As we watch a generation of these long-serving club managers move into retirement or consulting – in addition to Colin, we lost Brian Kroh just this month at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida – we are left with a legacy from which we can all learn. Colin's experience is second to none. He managed the US Open during the height of Covid. Five full years of planning all going down the drain as he had to work with the Governor of New York and plan the tournament without spectators as Bryson DeChambeau put his indelible mark on the sport. Now as he joins executive search firm GGA, Colin discusses how every club has a different environment and that search committees, managers and search firms should understand the club's culture first before trying to match a candidate to the club. Do Things with People, Not to Them If you really desire a quality organization you should do things with people, not to them. Burns has put this as his central motif throughout his career. And, with that teamwork sentiment, Colin points out that the hierarchy of a private members club staff doesn't always equate to salary levels. The director of golf, tennis, squash, or even agronomy, may indeed be the highest paid member of staff at many clubs. And what's even more meaningful to club staff members than base compensation? Housing is top of Colin's list and finds it the top of his staff members' list as well. Retiring To a Zenith at Apogee And finally, Apogee means zenith or the highest point of development – and Colin's new project is certainly a zenith of physical land development and a highlight of a continuing, outstanding career. Originally named COO for an incredible project based in Hobe Sound, Florida, now senior advisor, Colin is truly excited about Apogee. It's a three-course extravaganza – or as he calls it “Streamsong on Steroids.” Designers Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, Mike Davis and Tom Fazio and Kyle Phillips have teamed up with financial backing from Dolphins owner Steve Ross. Colin takes us through the plans and the vastness of this incredible project, and how this team is betting on South Florida moving up to Martin County in the very near future beyond Jupiter and toward sleepy Stuart.

Jaeger Kovich joins this week to discuss his career as a golf course architect. Born as a New Yorker, Jaeger was exposed to Shinnecock Hills early in his teens for what he calls his "aha moment".  A few books later, the aha moment became a persistent chase to work for Tom Doak. That push included many emails, uncertainty, and nights studying mandarin in hopes of getting the next job in China. He got that job, eventually worked with Gil Hanse & Jim Wagner for many years, eventually as an associate, where he experienced the boom of restorations and new builds we all know and love. The security of those jobs did not stop him. He put everything into what once was a vehicle for contracting work, Proper Golf, and has been at work consulting for clubs in the Northeast. Because he's seen so much, worked with so many talented shapers, superintendents, associates, architects, owners, and clubs, the stories are endless. View the plan here: NationalLinksTrust.org/future-of-rock-creek-golfMore about the plan: The Rock Creek Park golf course rehabilitation is the first leg of National Links Trust's “Nation's Capital Project” alongside the National Park Service (NPS). This project will occur in two phases. The first phase will include the construction of a new clubhouse, driving range, maintenance facility, pavilion, Himalayas-style putting course, and short game facility. The second phase will involve the renovation of the golf course - creating a nine-hole regulation length golf course and a nine-hole par three course - and construction of ecological trails through the property. The clubhouse and driving range built in the first phase will offer a food and beverage operation, a community room, indoor golf training areas, a pro shop, and support areas. In addition, the clubhouse will house classrooms, program spaces, and the administrative headquarters of First Tee -- Greater Washington, DC. The golf course will remain open while the clubhouse is being constructed. The golf course work in the second phase of the project will be overseen by golf course architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, renowned for both their new construction and their extensive renovation work including at three William Flynn-designed courses in the United States. The proposed nine-hole regulation, par 35 course measures approximately 3,300 yards and uses corridors from both Flynn's original more open front nine and more wooded back nine. The nine-hole par-3 course starts and finishes just west of the current 9th green. This mix of playing options takes advantage of the site's natural setting, minimizes tree clearing, allows for healthy turf conditions, and improves playability.Throughout the week of January 9, NLT will be releasing more details of the plan on social media as well as the webpage provided above.

Rockaway Hunting Club located in Lawrence, NY was founded in 1878. Not originally built for golf when fox hunting and steeplechase were popular, and along with the Meadowbrook Polo Club, Rockaway was one of the twin powers of early American polo. Golf arrived a few years later. First with a 9-holer in place by 1895 and a full 18 by 1900. The history of the course is that of an architectural hybrid, with Tom Bendelow, Devereux Emmet, A.W. Tillinghast, Perry Maxwell, and others contributing to a design that—while settled into its current routing by the mid-20th century—has continued to evolve. The most recent phase is now completed in the form of a comprehensive update by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, one that sees the course poised to move from the category of “hidden gem” to that of “must see.” Learn more about your ad choices. He took some time away from an in-progress build at Jonathan’s Landing in Florida to chat with Andy Johnson about working with contractors, mentoring shapers, crafting contours, and staying hands-on as the Hanse name gets bigger. They also touch on new projects at PGA Frisco and West Palm Beach.

In this episode I was delighted to speak to a legal tech superstar Jim Wagner, who has been innovating in the sector for 20 years.  Having trained in law, Jim practiced as a lawyer for ten years before transitioning to the business side of things. Jim tells us about his journey into Seal (now part of DocuSign Agreement Cloud), and how AI and machine learning are really beginning to transform aspects of the inhouse lawyer's ability to do their roles particularly in relation to analysing corporate contracts. When Jim became aware of Seal, it was focused exclusively on the corporate market - so Jim and his team created accelerators - collections of AI models that solve for things like procurement and compliance,  or ISDA or NDAs. Even though companies like Seal have been doing this now for 10 years, the reality is, Artificial Intelligence is still on a maturity curve and there's a lot of room left on that maturity curve. Jim describes certain aspects of AI, take mergers and acquisitions, where there are mature AI models out there for identifying change and control or identifying assignment rights and those sorts of things. But once you getting into larger, more complex agreements, master service agreements, master hosting agreements, licensing agreements, data processing adenda, et cetera, delivering AI value across those complex agreements is going to be a journey.Jim encourages his clients to think of AI as 'a tremendous assist'. He argues why on earth would you undertake the analysis or review of an agreement without having that assist? "Because we're going to read so many critical parts of the document, and candidly, we're going to unearth a lot more with AI than, than might meet the human eye. And so, so there's a huge, huge assist that's available." Jim teaches a class where he went to law school. He still stays involved in that community. And a big part of what he talks about with his students is ethics. Ten years ago they'd probably have considered what are the ethical implications if you use AI? And now they turn the debate on its head and say, "what are the ethical implications from not using AI?". He goes on to say: "We know you use spellcheck . We know you use red line. We know you want to have searchable text , right? You're going to want to use AI?".Jim feels it no longer makes any sense to undertake the process without the AI, but you do need to recognize that it's an assist. It's not full automation, certainly not full replacement for human review, at least for reviewing an entire agreement end-to-end, word for word on, on every single comma and period that's there.Tune in to hear more.

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 98, from July 2012. With a growing wealth disparity across the U.S. as the middle class moves out of expensive states or is significantly reduced to poverty in other areas, there comes ripe ground for a battle between the “haves” and “have-nots.” It is becoming more and more important to protect oneself and family from rising crime. Jason Hartman is joined on this episode by self-defense expert, Alex Haddox, to discuss best practices in self-defense. The first point that Alex addresses is awareness and avoidance, which are key to survival. Based on the military alertness color code, there are five levels of awareness, white, yellow, orange, red, and black. White is a total lack of awareness and black is being stunned and unable to react. Listen at: www.HolisticSurvival.com for Alex's life-saving advice. Alex talks about the importance of women's safety, high vulnerability situations, particularly bars, and stresses avoidance is the best solution. Jason and Alex also discuss home security, with lighting being the first step in deterring a home invasion. Alex goes on to explain other security steps homeowners can take, but most importantly, once again stressing awareness as the best defense. Alex Haddox took his first martial arts lesson at age ten. He has over sixteen years of combined traditional martial arts training in multiple styles including American Kenpo, Hapkido and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He has studied under world-renowned masters including: Grand Master Bong Soo Han, Grand Master Larry Tatum, Senior Master of the Art Mohamad Tabatabai, Master Bill Green, Master Eric Friske, Master Danny Cruz, and Jim Wagner. Mr. Haddox teaches both traditional martial arts and Jim Wagner's Reality-Based Personal Protection system. He believes there are a place and a need for both in today's complex and often dangerous environments. Each type of training offers their own benefits and equally valid point of view to the student. In a previous career, Mr. Haddox was the Product Manager and co-founder of the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC). He was considered one of the world's leading computer virus experts, traveled worldwide on speaking engagements and appeared on national television programs, including Good Morning America, CNBC, the Discovery Channel and Fox News Network. His work and personal life have taken him all over the globe including countries in North America, Europe, Africa and South America. He has seen some of the world's greatest cities and walked the streets of some of the most underprivileged. His experience has taught him that safety starts with knowing how to conduct yourself and what to be aware of, not necessarily where you are. Website: www.PracticalDefense.com
