On this episode, Toni talks to Jo Malone London & Jo Loves founder Jo Malone CBE. They discuss Jo's upbringing and relationship with her parents, her experience founding two successful cosmetics businesses, and her life as a mother. They also discuss Jo's battle with breast cancer and how the chemotherapy robbed her of her sense of smell.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When I first started planning season 1 of this podcast, that I thought would be a mini series, back in 2018, I wrote a list of dream guests- bucket list, beauty industry stalwarts whose brains I wanted to pick. Jo Malone was, of course, on that list, and on her most recent trip to Australia last month, we made it happen.Jo's story is unlike any other, and while we all know her name, I don't believe as many people know her story as well as they probably should. Jo grew up in South East London and following a very, very early introduction to the beauty industry, she discovered her sense of smell was a bit of a superpower. She built her own brand, opened her first store in 1994 and sold that brand to Estée Lauder in 1999 while staying on as Creative Director. In 2003, Jo was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer, and although she beat it, she completely lost her superpower- her sense of smell. She chose to exit the brand in 2006 and, exactly one month into a five year non compete, her sense of smell returned. Following what she describes as probably the hardest five years of her life, she launched Jo Loves in 2011- her second global fragrance brand and one she describes as bringing the best parts of herself to the world. This was so, so special for me, I'm so grateful to have had this time to physically sit down with Jo- no one tells her story like she does and I hope you love hearing it as much as I did. In this conversation, Jo shares why she has her father's work as an artist to thank for introducing the Jo Loves brand to a new generation, why we can thank a woman named Doris Hilderbaker for Jo's love of beauty, and what happens both physically and mentally when you walk away from a brand with your name on it. Jo Malone, CBE, was born special. She was born with synesthesia, a perceptual phenomenon wherein one sensory stimulation can create involuntary experiences for another. For Malone, this means she can experience smells visually. Malone parlayed this uniqueness into creating Jo Malone London, a global fragrance brand that The Estée Lauder Companies bought in 1999 for an undisclosed sum. Malone left the brand in 2006 after a breast cancer diagnosis, which rendered her unable to smell at the time. After a 5-year hiatus from fragrance, she reentered the category with Jo Loves. “I've learned over the last few years that fragrance is not a business or a career. To me, it's my best friend and the thing I love doing most in the whole world,” said Malone on the latest episode of the Glossy Beauty podcast. Jo Loves has become a Gen-Z favorite. And it's notable for its fragrance paintbrushes, released in 2017, and an in-store tapas bar concept to introduce customers to scents in a playful way. As the brand steadily expands internationally, it's also adding more hospitality partnerships including Shangri-La The Shard in London and the Park Lane Hotel in New York. For Malone, the goal is to change the world through fragrance. Malone spoke with Glossy about how she restarted a brand from scratch, why Dubai inspires her creatively, what she thinks of clean-beauty fragrances and why she aspires to create 101 fragrances.
“In every fragrance I create, I'm telling you the story of my life” You may be familiar with Jo Malone's scents; Lime Basil, Pomegranate Noir, Wood Sage. Today, Jo Malone joins Liz Taylor to share how she created the Jo Malone brand, how her sense of smell is her superpower, and what's next for her new business, Jo Loves. Liz Taylor's 30-year career in event planning has built an impressive portfolio of events, including celebrity weddings, charity fundraisers like Children in Need with Gary Barlow and huge gala dinners such as the Winter White Gala at Kensington Palace for HRH Duke of Cambridge, as well as the Manchester United Champions League winning after party in Moscow and Coronation Street's 40th-anniversary celebrations. For anyone who's ever smelled one of her iconic scents, Jo Malone needs no introduction. Described as an "English scent maverick," Jo has created some of the world's most-loved fragrances. Her first company, Jo Malone London, gained cult status around the world and was sold to Estée Lauder, and in 2013, she launched her Jo Loves, a global fragrance brand. Jo Malone's name is synonymous with luxury, but Jo didn't grow up with wealth. She was raised on a council estate in South East London and left school without any qualifications. Jo built the luxury fragrance brand Jo Malone London with her husband, Gary, and sold the company in 1999 to Estee Lauder. She left the business a few years later, after she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer and was given only 9 months to live. As part of the Lauder deal, she wasn't allowed to enter the industry for 5 years. Jo felt utterly lost, so she started a new brand, Jo Loves. Jo is so honest in this episode and tells me about the mistakes she made building her second company, after the huge success of the first.

Imagine if you could go back and fix what you perceived to be the greatest mistake of your life. Then think how incredible it would feel to find that perhaps it wasn't a mistake at all. When Holly talked to the one and only Jo Malone CBE on her Conversation of Inspiration podcast about the devastating error that changed her life — and what she did about it — it wasn't so much a lightbulb moment that went off as a whole light show. Despite Jo's undeniable success, in this short clip, she shares the mental, physical and emotional challenges she faced in both her personal and business life, and the ultimate choice she made — which at first seemed to ruin her future and then turned out to be the very thing that made it. A true inspiration, Jo has changed the world of fragrance, by building a global brand not once but twice. Joe Wicks wants to know: What's the one thing that makes life better? Joe loves finding ways to boost his mental and physical health, so he's asking some of his inspiring mates about their secret to physical and mental happiness. Whether it's a high-intensity cycle, a freezing cold shower or a good long dog-walk, every guest will share the one thing that works for them. Jo Malone built her perfume empire from very humble beginnings: some big plastic tubs, a kitchen table, and a dream. With no money but buckets of self belief, she managed to build a fragrance brand recognisable around the world. Then tragedy hit, in the form of a terrifying diagnosis of terminal cancer. With only months to live, Jo was forced to stand down from the company she loved, and fight for her life. Many years later, miraculously cancer free and back to her best, Jo started the whole process again. Back at the kitchen table, surrounded by jars and bottles, Jo founded her second fragrance company, Jo Loves. This is the story of a woman who doesn't give up, and believes in the power of dreams to pull you through the darkest of times. Joe and Jo chat entrepreneurship, parenthood, and learning to be grateful for the small things. Summer holiday's been postponed and you're feeling down? Forget about it. This is sunshine in a podcast. Joe Wicks is here for you, and he won't stop until you're fit and happy. Producer: Emily Knight Editor: Dimitri Houtart A BBC Audio Bristol production for Radio 4

Our guest on today's episode is Jo Malone CBE — the nation's favourite perfumer. She founded Jo Malone London, her first fragrance brand, when she was just 21 from a tiny flat in London, before selling it just a few years later to Estée Lauder for undisclosed millions. She now runs Jo Loves, a more experimental and personal perfume brand that takes its inspiration from her own life and memories. Today, Jo tells us about synesthesia, the incredibly rare neurological condition that gives her a “super powered nose”; how she had to learn to sell as a seven year old to put food on her family's table; and why setting up her second business was in fact so much harder than the first. (We recorded this episode via Zoom, and we were at the mercy of my provincial internet connection, so I hope you don't mind if I sometimes sound a little muffled. I think Jo's stories and wit more than make up for it.)

Here at Secret Leaders we are all about bringing you the best entrepreneurs in the world - those people who you wouldn’t ordinarily hear from, but who have inspiring stories to tell. They share their highs and more importantly their lows, with the aim of sparking a fire in you to follow in their footsteps, or accelerate the path you’re already on. Because let’s be honest, success stories are all good and well, but it’s the failures that shape us; it’s how we handle adversity that makes us who we are. And today’s two live guests are no strangers to adversity. Jo Malone: “My goals have never been realistic and that's the secret of my success. I really go out there and I push myself above and beyond. I think what we have to realise is that mistakes are a part of life.”Justine Roberts: “I worked very, very hard to find patient capital, which I think is what Mumsnet needs. And I made it very, very clear that we will always put purpose before profit.”Today, sharing the live stage and their entrepreneurial experiences for the first time are Jo Malone CBE and Justine Roberts CBE. Jo is the eponymous perfumier who came from humble beginnings on a council estate with no qualifications whatsoever, who has now successfully launched Jo Loves, her second bite at the startup apple. Justine has been described as one of the world’s most influential women and CEOs, the founder of Mumsnet, the most talked about parenting forum. We chat about:The hardest moments of their entrepreneur experience so farThe upside to being suedThe difficulty of finding funding for your startup from men, when you’re femaleWhy your equity in your business is your golden ticketThe difficulty of achieving a work life balance when you’re an entrepreneur with a familyEntrepreneurialism needs to be taught in schoolIf they had a do over, what they would do differentlyLinks:https://www.secretleaders.com/jo-malonehttps://www.secretleaders.com/s03e3-justine-robertsWant to receive our podcast on a weekly basis? From the Simplr studios in San Francisco, this is your daily briefing. With your Retail E-Commerce Briefing for today, Wednesday, December 4th, I'm Vincent Phamvan.IntroductionBeauty advent calendars haven’t always been in demand, but as they’ve evolved, beauty brands and retailers are now capitalizing on high consumer interest to drum up new customers for the holidays.First, here are some retail headlines.Lord & Taylor Opens Small-Format Store in NYCAt the beginning of the year, Lord & Taylor closed its massive New York store after more than 100 years in business. Now, the department store will end 2019 by opening a new small-format store in Manhattan this holiday season. The new shop will be just 2,400 square feet, much smaller and tightly curated than its flagship on Fifth Avenue. The small-format store will open for two weeks in mid-December in New York’s SoHo district. This will give Le Tote, the company’s new owner, a chance to re-connect with shoppers in the midst of the busy holiday shopping season.Best Buy Looking to Continue to Scale Fulfillment OptionsBest Buy launched order pickup services in 175 CVS and UPS stores in New York this quarter. According to the company’s CEO, Corie Barry, they are “focused on expanding both our fulfillment options and in-home resources.” Roughly 99 percent of Best Buy customers live in an area where next-day delivery is available, up from 80 percent last quarter. For customers who choose to buy online and pick-up in-store, 80 percent of orders are ready in under 30 minutes. The company is looking to scale the program nationally after the holidays.Cyber Monday Once Again Big Day For AmazonFor Amazon, Cyber Monday was yet again, “the single biggest shopping day in the company’s history, based on the number of items ordered worldwide.” The e-commerce giant also said that its Marketplace sellers sold more items during Cyber Monday than any other 24-hour period in the company’s history. The company noted customers bought a record number of Amazon devices globally over the holiday weekend. The announcement came shortly after Adobe reported Cyber Monday sales hit a record of $9.4 billion dollars in retail this year.Growing Beauty Advent Calendar Craze Boosts Brand Awareness and Customer AcquisitionAdvent calendars are a holiday staple for many households, traditionally filled with chocolates behind 24 small doors. But what about beauty advent calendars? They aren’t a new phenomenon, with some being introduced by companies as early as 2013, but they’ve evolved significantly. They’ve become more sophisticated and elaborate, including higher-value items, and often coming with a premium price tag.Now in its sixth year, Liberty’s beauty advent calendar priced at $277 dollars remains the retailer’s fastest-selling product in its 147-year history. After trialing an advent calendar that sold out within seven minutes, fragrance brand Jo Loves doubled down for 2019 with a Christmas tree calendar that contained exclusive products and brand favorites for $390 dollars. The day that Jo Loves calendar went on sale marked the brand’s biggest e-commerce sales moment to date, bringing in record traffic levels. The beauty advent calendar can be used as a discovery tool for new customers. For a multi-brand retailer like Liberty, the beauty advent calendar offers customers a chance to try new products they wouldn’t have considered before. With a curated mix of popular brands and newer or lesser-known products, Liberty is able to entice customers while also promoting awareness of alternative offerings in the store. It’s also a great way to bring in new customers. For Jo Loves, about 50 percent of calendars were sold to new customers. For Liberty, 56 percent of sales this year also came from new customers. Jo Loves general manager said, “It really gives people who don’t necessarily know the brand the opportunity to try lots of different things within the range.” While currently a UK-centric trend, awareness is starting to grow largely thanks to social media. Nordstrom and Bloomingdales are now selling beauty calendars and Target is offering a $10 dollar bath bomb calendar.ClosingWant to stand out?
