The Power of Public Green Spaces: NY's Elizabeth Street Garden with Joseph Reiver

The Elizabeth Street Garden in New York City's Little Italy and SoHo neighborhoods is a one-acre public garden founded in 1991 by Allan Reiver, an artist and art dealer who passed in 2021. The lot on which the garden has grown these many years is owned by the city and managed by the non-profit community group, Elizabeth Street Garden. Joseph Reiver, Allan's son, is the current director of the group.  Since 2013, Joseph, along with the Garden's community, has been fighting to preserve and protect this special art and community-filled green space - one of few in this section of the city. In 2024, the Garden came under renewed threat of development, this time with increased vigor. In today's conversation between guest host Ben Futa and Joseph Reiver, we learn how the inspiring story of how the Garden is fighting back - taking a stand against the powerful interests that seek to erase more than 30 years of community, growth, and beauty. This is something of a David and Goliath story: the modest community garden with surprising strength and agility going up against the many giants of New York City bureaucracy, lobbyists, developers. And while this is the story of one green space in one city, it serves as a call to action and a cautionary tale for all green spaces in all urban areas, where they are desperately needed, incredibly valuable to the quality of life for all, and easy to lose if we're not paying attention. The Elizabeth Street Garden was featured in the 2023 book New York Green by acclaimed writer and photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo. Listen in! Cultivating Place now has a donate button! In this episode I speak with Pip Durell founder of With Nothing Underneath to explore having singular focus at your business grows, how to lead, the reality of what it takes and how to celebrate the journey .Start ups are exciting and much discussed but there is something particularly intriguing about those companies that make it to adolescence. You realise what really matters, you start to understand yourself better, you analyse what ‘works' more effectively, your team becomes increasingly essential, your confidence grows, so does the risk. In my experience, something happens at around the five to seven year mark. And that is where we meet today's guest. Pip Durrell is the founder of With Nothing Underneath.I'm sure that she needs no introduction. Her shirts are renowned. Her Instagram feed documents life as the founder of one of the most successful brands in this generation; we feel that we know her. Her beautiful shirts are worn far and wide by the great and the good, I imagine her enviable press clippings as a teetering mountain and her Elizabeth Street shop is delight. Beauty and brains – the ultimate combination sit at the core of this brand. Perhaps that's its magic. The style, the glamour, the beautiful women sit confidently alongside BCorp status.Too often, people feel that talent is enough. That creativity is enough. That financial investment is enough. That great connections are enough. None of these are true. Dedication is the name of the game. And Pip demonstrates that dedication consistently. This isn't luck. This is grit. In this episode, we talk about doing one thing well. Dedicating yourself to one thing and having singular focus. We are going to find out about the With Nothing Underneath Woman. The value of bricks and mortar. Sticking with a singular vision despite all the distractions and temptations. And what's next for this adolescent brand. With Nothing Underneath: www.withnothingunderneath.com

I want to share an incredible moment I had yesterday. It has to be one of the strongest and most impactful moments of my life.I needed to be in the city yesterday for an interview. As I'm going to be featured in a book on the topic of how business owners have a huge advantage when it comes to investing.I'll mention more about the book in future emails. But I want to share this story with you.Anyhow, I needed to be in the city at 10 am yesterday. It normally takes me about 30 min to get to the city via train.Rather than leave at 9:30, I decided to take the opportunity to get into the city earlier.I wanted to see what peak hour was like in Melbourne CBD these days.To see the huge numbers of people in suits and construction workers in high vis tops getting into their day.I was curious if the energy of Melbourne was back after recent years, or is it a ghost town these days? And Melbourne didn't disappoint.I caught the train to flinders street station at 8:30 am( A full hour earlier than needed and right on peak hour. )I grabbed a coffee near the station and began walking slowly up Elizabeth Street towards where the interview was being held later that day.As I watched the people around me, I noticed a few things.- they were all addicted to their phones- most were rushing and aggressively walking through each other- 99% of people looked unhappy, and that they would prefer to be somewhere else- no one (apart from me) noticed what a beautiful day it wasAnd then it hit me.That's not my life.I'm free from that.I'm not plugged into that system anymore. And while I have known that logically for some time, this was the first time I truly felt it.I felt like Neo in the first Matrix movie. That scene where he is walking up the street with the girl in the red dress. That deep realisation that he is no longer plugged in.That he is no longer a slave to that system. The reason I started a business was to have this level of freedom, and now I do.Which I'm incredibly grateful for.I want every business owner to have that moment in their own journey.Anyhow, This week on the podcast, Grant and I are doing some Q&A.Covering questions from the community (Yes, you.)My favourite question on this round was: “What does a healthy business look like?”If you have a question for future episodes, send us an email. We've got a raily good idea to get your school holidays on track, with a visit to the https://crossriverrailexperiencecentre.qld.gov.au/ (Cross River Rail Experience Centre). It's a great spot for the kids these holidays as it's free to visit! https://crossriverrail.qld.gov.au/ (Cross River Rail) is one of Brisbane's biggest civil infrastructure projects, with a new underground rail line through the CBD and a number of new stations - including one at Albert Street in the CBD, just a stones throw from where Alfie is dropped off for his first day at work in The Quiet Game. We dropped in to check out the Experience Centre, which is an immersive and interactive educational experience. Not only can kids learn about the project but they can learn about science, engineering, history and they'll learn a bit about Brisbane as well. The centre is really much more than just a visitor centre; it's a true experience in every sense of the word, with virtual reality stations, a maker space, a 270 degree wrap around theatre and touch screens galore. We spoke to Russell Vine, who is the Executive Director, Marketing and Communications for Cross River Rail and is a wealth of knowledge about the project and the Experience Centre. Make sure you check out their https://crossriverrailexperiencecentre.qld.gov.au/events/ (events page) for all the school holiday activities, as some activities, although free, require booking. The Cross River Rail Experience is located at 1/151 Elizabeth Street, just across from the Wintergarden Food Court. Entry is free and there is an elevator and wheelchair accessibility throughout the Experience Centre.

“ I came upon the guests in this particular episode, Reza and Luke Nasserbakht of The Hop, custom shirt makers , in much the same way as I have come across people in my daily life: responding to my immediate environment in the moment with as little prior prejudice or planning as is possible. Much as I found our producer, Laurie Strickland simply by the ritual of getting a coffee in a coffee shop, Think Coffee to be exact, I was struck by a storefront on Elizabeth Street in Lower Manhattan. The beauty and design of it which led me into that environment, couple of course with my open-minded curiosity as much as my love of beauty. At that time I had very few shirts bespoke, resorting mainly to made to measure and the very best ready to wear. If you fast forward to today in 2021 their business has changed location: they are in a much tonier address uptown on Madison Avenue in a vicinity of New York City known for the better menswear and custom tailoring more generally. To me, of course it is very much the same family, and the very best level of craft and, dare I say, art. I thought it would be interesting given that my physical body has changed, like so many around the world at this time, to start from scratch and with a single shirt, to offer one simple example of what someone like Reza does and to include this episode as part of a larger series on clothing which inaugurated with Avery Lucas. I recorded some short audio interviews with both the father and his son Luke at their new space in Manhattan. The other thing that was clear to me is the validity of my snapshot theory of art applies here too. One thing that should be immediately clear concerning this particular episode is the extraordinary steadfastness and commitment to quality of craft, both over the longest period of time, as well as the greatest expanse of global geography. I met this family at a certain period of time and location of the years 2010 and 2011. Yet from their point of view what matters most is the very real progress involved in their move uptown. There is a palpable sense of pride in this move as best reflecting what they are all about. In a sense that is their current "snapshot." And we see two opposites: on the one hand there is the sometimes great changes in the cut or silhouette of clothing in popular fashions seem to sweep the decisions of everybody, both in the initial construction of all clothing as well as the habits of those who will wear it. Yet on the other hand we see the absolute consistency of both measurements which are objective as well as quality of craft which always applies, no matter the garment in question, and how this commitment to such quality is passed on though generations and eras so that it can be enjoyed in the world, notwithstanding the vagaries of where any of us happen to find ourselves. For me what Reza and his son practice is as important as anything in art and culture." Reza, Luke and The Hop's Bio A FAMILY CUSTOM OUR FAMILY HAS BEEN MAKING CUSTOM SHIRTS FOR OVER 100 YEARS. WE LEARNED HOW TO MAKE SHIRTS FROM OUR FATHER WHO LEARNED HOW TO MAKE SHIRTS FROM HIS FATHER. IN OUR FAMILY, WE BELIEVE IN THE VALUE OF EXPERTLY CRAFTED GOODS. IN QUALITY OVER SPEED. OUR SHIRTS ARE MADE WITH THE FINEST QUALITY MATERIALS AND AN EXPERIENCED HAND. The problems extend all the way to the intersection of Nicholson Street with Bell St and onto Elizabeth Street where pedestrians and cyclists, including many of the almost 1200 students attending Coburg High School, are forced to use inadequate spaces not designed for the safe movement of people on foot and bicycles. In the past five days alone SEVEN motor vehicles have crashed with most ending up on the footpath or running into pedestrian infrastructure. There is no safe direct alternative route for riders in this area, particularly for those whose destination is on Nicholson Street. We touch on the petition organised for Safe Access Over Bell Street Bridge for everyone and the responses to date from local MPs Tim Read and Lizzie Blandthorne, Moreland Council and TheMinister for Road Safety Ben Carroll. To get involved: - sign the petition for safety improvements on the Bell Street bridge - join Pedestrians Safety for Nicholson Street Coburg-join Safe Access over Bell Street Bridge for everyone

Michael is joined by Andrew Mander-Jones, the great-great-grandson of department store founder David Jones, for a history lesson on just who his ancestor David Jones was.   David Jones was born in 1793, the son of Thomas Jones, a farmer near Llandeilo, Wales, and his wife Nancy. He became an apprentice to a grocer in Carmarthen at a young age and his business talent led to him being offered, at the age of 18, the management of a general store in Eglwyswrw, Pembrokeshire.   He migrated with his family to Hobart in Tasmania in October 1834 on board the Thomas Harrison. He subsequently went into partnership with Charles Appleton 1835 (a merchant who had opened a store in Sydney in 1825) forming the firm 'Appleton & Jones'.   The partnership was dissolved in 1838 when he established 'David Jones & Co', at 463 George Street, thereby establishing one of the oldest surviving department stores in the world which would be the main location of David Jones until the opening of the Elizabeth Street store in 1928.   Later with the success of his business, Jones retired from active management in 1856. However he later returned to save it from bankruptcy, thereafter serving until ultimate retirement in 1868.   Mr Jones’ mission was to sell “the best and most exclusive goods” and to carry “stock that embraces the everyday wants of mankind at large.”   Rookwood Cemetery unveiled significant heritage conservation work completed on the David Jones family monument earlier this week. This episode is about how I got started as a bartender and how I started my business. I look forward to hearing your story! I referenced a product to make a logo for yourself. Check out Canva.com. Honestly, what you're really selling is YOU, so if you just want to get started without spending much money, just use your name. Even filing for an LLC is optional (but recommended!) *** When I was a kid, my mom told me that I would be a great bartender or a great shrink.I was around 22 years old and I got a job as a bus, sir, at a Little East County Irish restaurant.I knew I had to start somewhere, but it was always my goal and intention to be a bartender. There s O after awhile, busing tables and washing dishes. I eventually became a server waiting in line to get behind the bar. That day would never come, so I took a job as a day bartender at a complete dive, but I got a lot of valuable experience there, too.My job was the head bartender, I guess on I was making 50 bucks a week plus tips to manage the bar.The fondue bar led me to a scene that was happening on Elizabeth Street called the Randolph, which is where I really got my start. They partnered with the late, great Mr Sasha Petraski to train us and show us what a proper drink tastes like and how that's made. This experience was absolutely pivotal for me, and I still remember the feeling of knowing I was in the presence of a master. The training was ongoing because down the street was one of the cornerstones of the craft cocktail movement Milk and honey. This was one of the times that I gained the most knowledge in the shortest amount of time. I mean, they were asking me for, like, Vieux Carre and Queens Park Swizzles and, you know, Ramos Gin fizzes.Death & Co. was another massively pivotal time for me. I mean, the entire complexion of how cocktails were built was a completely new structure.I was elected to be the second president of the New York chapter of the USBG.I got a StarChefs.com Rising Star Award.I was most influential 40 under 40 for Wine Enthusiast magazineI started my first business as critical Mass Events LLC in the fall of 2010. *** Questions, comments or want are you a bartender/chef who's built a business? Let me know! After 16 years at J. Crew, Somsack Sikhounmuong switched to a much smaller company to design clothes for Alex Mill. But he's remaining close to the Drexler family. "I always joke that he's my fairy god agent," said Sikhounmuong about Mickey Drexler, the former CEO of J. Crew Group. During a sabbatical after his work at J. Crew and Madewell, the J. Crew subsidiary that continues to outshine its parent company, Sikhounmuong got a phone call from Mickey Drexler: "I was in line at Whole Foods, because I wasn't working and I could be in line at Whole Foods in the afternoon," he said. Mickey asked him to meet with his son Alex Drexler about designing for Alex's company, Alex Mill, for which Mickey Drexler is both an investor and an advisor. On the Glossy Podcast, Sikhounmuong discussed his work for Alex Mill, which was founded in 2012 out of "a tiny store on Elizabeth Street." Sikhounmuong also talked about the difference between designing clothes for women versus men, the transition from a massive company to a startup, and the experience of interviewing with J. Crew's Jenna Lyons.

Celine speaks to Rachel Roberts from the artist collective Applespiel on their new exhibit ‘Return to Escape from Woomera’, and artist Ali MC on his upcoming exhibit ‘Nong Shain Maw: Stone Breakers of the East Khasi Highlands’. Sixteen years ago a group of Australians rocked the political landscape with Escape from Woomera, a video game putting players in the shoes of a refugee escaping detention. Now the sprawling creative collective Applespiel invite you to make your own bid for freedom as part of a turbo-charged and retro-fitted evening of live gaming, performance, discussion and debate. Each night the artists conjure a live commentary to accompany the gameplay alongside human rights advocates, refugees and the game’s original makers, exploring the ongoing significance of this singular cultural intervention.  Applespiel are a collective of eights artists who collaborate as performers, musicians, technicians and devisers. None of its members have any lived refugee experiences, but know that as Australians they’re complicit in the treatment of asylum seekers. Detention has been a political point-scorer since Applespiel were infants, and a defining way in which this nation engages with the rest of the world. Return to Escape from Woomera – ApplespielSeason 21 – 25 May 2019Times 6.30pm Tue – SatLocation Meat MarketAddress 5 Blackwood St, North MelbourneDuration 150 minutes (audiences are able to leave and re-enter the space at any time)Tickets $25 – $35 (plus transaction fee)Bookings artshouse.com.au or (03) 9322 3720Ali MC's ‘Nong Shain Maw: Stone Breakers of the East Khasi Highlands’. High in the mountains of north-east India, the indigenous Khasi eke out a living quarrying stone for shipment to Bangladesh. In the summer of 2005, Dario Wolos joked to his friends he would start a taco shop inside a Volkswagen, or "combi" as the locals called it. The name "Tacombi" was dreamt up, then promptly forgotten after several rounds of mezcal. He was still working in the finance department of an internet startup in London at the time, but something clicked after that night and shortly afterwards Dario quit his job and found himself back in Mexico, dipping into his life savings to buy a 1963 VW Kombi. He drove the bus with his girlfriend through the volcanoes of the Yucatan and landed at Playa de Carmen, a popular beachside destination for national and international tourists. Dario had no training in food, so he convinced a friend's father to come for a week and teach him how to make barbacoa lengua before he officially opened the first Tacombi next to a local nightclub. 4 years later, low tourism in Playa de Carmen pushed Dario to move back stateside, where he eventually found the perfect spot on Elizabeth Street to open New York City's Tacombi. Join us as Dario takes us through the weaving journey of an entrepreneur, the interpretations of Mexican cuisine in the U.S. versus Mexico and the spirit of Mexico he's working hard to showcase at Tacombi.
