Ali McGregor and Reuben Kaye are two of Australia's most talented, versatile and unique performing artists. Between them they've traversed the world and the worlds of opera, jazz, television, cabaret, comedy, musical theatre, drag…. and pottery. But their stories and journeys are far from simple or linear and they've endured various hardships and adversities in ways that have asked them to embody resilience, courage and leadershipIn this episode we discuss:-Rueben's harrowing ‘death of a thousand cuts' experience of being beaten and marginalised because of his sexuality.-The value of not having one clear goal, when it closes us to potential peripheral opportunities.-How Ali was able to use this theory to feel less attached to the Opera world, and shift into Cabaret when the Opera door closed on her.-Cancelled shows and death threats after Rueben's controversial appearance on Channel 10's ‘The Project'.-The importance of having clear purpose in life.-Reuben being bullied by his director and fired on his first Musical Theatre job, Evita.-Good reviews, bad reviews, apathetic ones, and the challenge of separating the human doing from human being in the art form of Cabaret.-How to be outrageous, play with an audience and still ensure people love you.-The value of cracks in life and why live is everything for them in performance.-The importance of continuing to walk on our journey when things don't go our way.-What freedom means to them, and the freedoms they choose to fight for.-Love, connection and pride for the LGBTQIA+ community.-The intersection between patriarchy, misogyny and transphobia.Subscribe to our YouTube channel to WATCH the full episode @gobehindthemaskFollow us on Instagram and TikTok @gobehindthemaskVisit our website for more information and register to begin YOUR journey behind the mask.www.gobehindthemask.com.au Hosted on Acast. Award winning cabaret star, singer and comedian, Reuben Kaye joined us on the pod to explain where he was before he blew the Australian comedy industry to bits. His original answer was ‘London', but as we delved a bit deeper, the real answer we wanted was way less cool. Reuben worked in shitty hospitality jobs where we watched a man make salmon patties in a sink he spat in, and then he climbed the ranks of a company that celebrates bandanas. It was a wild ride. SPECIAL LIVE RECORDING WITH REUBEN KAYE!Today we have an exciting episode – a recording of the sold-out Live Show I did recently with comedy, camp, cabaret superstar Reuben Kaye! This episode is unlike others. It was recorded in front of a live audience, with a man under the age of 40 and it totally went off the rails. It was a special for IDAHOBIT day – the international day against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. And it's bloody fabulous!Reuben and I talk about his early dating days, his experiences at school as a boy ahead of his time (that bit will make you cry). We talked some of his sexual preferences, his sexcapades and he poked at fun at me, whilst I laughed at him. (I told him off once or twice too). Reuben is just wonderful. He was hilarious – side-splittingly so – but also raw and vulnerable. I am pretty sure he went places he doesn't usually go in interviews and man; we were the beneficiaries.A trigger warning: it's probably the best part of the episode but we do get into intergenerational trauma and there's some discussion of suicide. And Bonus – writer, creator and singer of the Dear Nelly theme song, Casey Bennetto sings the theme song live.ENJOY! SLOPPY SECONDS WITH EMMA RACEToday we have the one and only Emma Race back. Emma and I talk the joys of perimenopause. We turn the tables and Emma gets to ask me a question – she asks what it's like to be a newly single parent and if I miss those shared parenting moments. (Spoiler alert: yes and no). We talk about how you know when it's' time to leave a long-term relationship and, what it's like to be a strong woman who wants her hand held. We take some awesome listener calls on how to ask for what you want in the bedroom and another one on vaginal atrophy – and before you laugh, yes it's a real thing. As with all sloppy seconds we end with Emma's thoughts on the biggest dating or relationships mistake she sees. Emma is a wise old chook - you get to love her insights all over again. SLOPPY SECONDS WITH JO STANLEYToday we have our second return co-host - the one and only Jo Stanley. Jo joined us for episode 10 on 23rd March and talked us through her late start to dating, her early(ish) marriage and making it work through the trials and tribulations of life, love, alcohol, date nights and kids. In this episode Jo asks me about how to support friends through divorce and separation. We take some awesome listener calls on what to do if your partner gets jealous when you exercise (that one floored us both) and Mari calls back to tell us how's she's going post-chemo. As always Jo is thoughtful, kind and hilarious – there's a reason I asked her back. We recorded this ep on zoom but don't worry, I upped the wifi and it sounds good. Jo's husband interrupts the recording and that goes really well :) REMINDER: WE'RE DOING ANOTHER LIVE SHOW!!!May 20th 2023 at Comedy Republic in Melbourne and also, Live-streamed for overseas, interstate and listeners with disabilities. SLOPPY SECONDS WITH SCOTT BRENNANToday we have a special episode. It's our first return co-host - the one and only Scott Brennan. Scotty Brennan joined us on 23rd Feb and talked us through his journey of recovering from being cheated on by a long term partner. Because we've already covered that story in his first ep, today Nelly gives Scotty the chance to turn the tables and ask HER the questions. He chose to ask Nelly about her online dating journey, her first date and what it was like to get dumped. There's some awesome listener calls on what to do if you've had the best sex of your life and think you'll never find it again, another on buying a house with your ex and a beautiful call from a woman who made the brave decision to end her marriage and is now grappling with the disappointment and shame of living a more frugal, share-house life. (Spoiler alert: Nelly and Scott both reckon she's doing great.) And lastly they take a listener letter on feeling guilt when you break up with someone. That one's a doozy. The answer to that question is within this episode, but first there's a kinda sorta answer to last week's question for the cast of Glee, which we follow with a reminder of what Emsolators need to do if Em ever goes missing. Then it's on to Em's Saturday which included an early morning wake up, a hurried house clean, a 50th birthday lunch for her husband Scott and a midnight performance on stage with Reuben Kaye. We're talking stand-ups, a full band, singing, burlesque, fire twirling, aerial circus acts, maximum naked wang including actual ones and Em's inflatable version and finally an act that included a discretely hidden salt shaker. After that Michael drops a bombshell revealing he got teary watching a video of James Corden, it leaves Em understandably shook plus she then had to sit through the same video just to see how she'd react. We then reflect on the death of Barry Humphries, cover off a new TV show that Em's just binge watched called ‘The Diplomat' and offer up a mental side quest on the rumours Taylor Swift might be dating F1 champion Fernando Alonso (Michael has to do maximum googling for clarity and Em's so inspired she's off to work on some Tay Tay and Fernando fan fiction for next week). Finally Em teases a massive announcement that's been giving her migraines and then returns to give us her take on the aforementioned James Corden video with surprising results. We celebrate Sydney WorldPride with cabaret performer and drag artist Reuben Kaye. In his breathlessly entertaining shows, Kaye shares his family's extraordinary story of survival and how the arts carried him through trauma — all while singing up a storm. Also, the Hayes Theatre Co revive Gentleman Prefer Blondes — but how is it a queer story? And we consider the evolution of queer performance through the years. In an era of increasing recognition of LGBTQIA+ rights, how does queer storytelling maintain its vitality?

Join Jewish Comedians Rachel Creeger & Philip Simon for their comedy podcast, a chat show about all things Jewish, produced by Russell Balkind. This week's guest is Australian cabaret artist and comedian, Reuben Kaye, recorded in front of a live audience at Assembly Festival as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. We were in "The Box", which is a shipping container, on a baking hot day, with an emergency fan on and one door ajar so that everyone made it through to the end of the show without passing out! My guest on today's episode of The Catheteria is someone who's been described as the evil love child of Liza Minelli and Jim Carey. The London Times describes him as a new comedy star. Reuben Kaye is what happens when you tell your child they can be anything they want. I recently caught up with Reuben at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and he gave insight into how hard life on stage really can be as well as the drive needed to stay in the spotlight. An eye opener of an interview.... but also endearing. I think by the end of this you will love Reuben Kaye as much as I do.If you'd like to know more about Reuben or want to get in touch head to https://www.reubenkaye.com/ Hosted on Acast. Multi-award winning Australian comedian, singer and cabaret performer Reuben Kaye is returning to Perth!
2021 Summer Vacation Series Destination: Melbourne, Australia Read the article at: comedywham.com This week Janet McLeod talks to Valerie about her start in comedy involved an inflatable chair, how her helpful nature and love of comedy evolved into her role as a connector (which is exactly why we got to know her - without her, we never would have landed the great Australian comics that we did on our Isolation Comedy Online show in 2020), and how she's been thriving with her own online shows and trivia events. Want to know more about comedy in Melbourne, Australia? Janet's mentions and recommendations for comics to check out from Melbourne or larger Australia include: Cal Wilson, Tim Minchin, DJ Andrew McClelland, Ethan Cavanagh, Oliver Clark, Dane Simpson, Jude Perl, Reuben Kaye, Geraldine Quinn, Kirsty Webeck, Claire Hooper, and Ivan Aristeguieta. If you're in Melbourne, Australia Janet, recommends that you check out the handful of comedy clubs in town and there are 3-5 standup comedy shows each night. Similar to most developed American comedy towns, you can see everything from bar shows, to club shows, to large theater shows. We won't comment on whether this is similar to other scenes or not, but McLeod likens the Melbourne scene to a giant dysfunctional family - full of camaraderie, but brimming with hilarious oddballs. Janet can be seen and heard: Planet Janet Trivia Events Local Laughs - returning soon! Cinema Fiasco with Geoff Wallis - returning soon! ABC Local Radio's Overnights With Trevor Chappell. Sharp-tongued and quick-witted, Reuben Kaye has built an enviable reputation as a cabaret star on the stages of London and Paris. But early in 2020, Kaye had to deal with vocal surgery and his hardest challenge yet: silence. Now, back in full form and weathering out the pandemic in Australia, Kaye takes us into his life on and off the stage, and explains how to subvert extremely masculine songs through the power of cabaret.
