Join in the conversation!Welcome back to another Episode of the Hella Chisme Podcast. This week on the Hella Chisme Podcast, Dana and Lo unpack the complicated reality of who we are online versus who we are in real life. From curated Instagram feeds and influencer culture to comparison burnout, online validation, and the pressure to “perform” for the algorithm, this episode dives deep into the digital personas we create and the emotional toll they can take. The conversation explores everything from social media authenticity and viral culture to content creator burnout, parasocial relationships, online comparison, and the growing pressure to constantly stay visible online. Dana also reflects on podcasting, building Hella Chisme through 100+ episodes, navigating creative consistency, and learning how to create meaningful content without losing yourself in the process.Along the way, the episode blends pop culture commentary, real-life stories, dating conversations, reality TV chaos, and hilarious sibling banter while asking an important question:Are we presenting our real selves online or just the version we think people want to see?If you've ever questioned your worth because of social media, felt burnt out by the algorithm, compared your journey to someone else's highlight reel, or struggled to balance authenticity with visibility, this conversation is for you.LINK: https://linktr.ee/hellachismepodcastTopics to Include: social media authenticity, digital identity, online personas, influencer culture, algorithm burnout, podcast growth, content creator burnout, social media pressure, online validation, comparison culture, authenticity online, parasocial relationships, creator economy, internet culture, queer podcast, Black queer creatives, mental health and social media, visibility online, social media and self-worth, podcasting journey, algorithm culture, content creation, digital burnout, viral culture, podcast community, creator mindset, online image, authenticity vs performance, Hella Chisme PodcastSupport the showFollow Hella Chisme for more culture, conversation, and creative storytelling. In this deep dive into the Hulu phenomenon The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, host Laura is joined by licensed marriage and family therapist Ashley Buckner to peel back the layers of drama and reveal the complex psychological machinery underneath. The duo explores how the Mormon influencer pipeline was born from a culture of polished aesthetics and public testimony, and why the sudden shift in financial power—where women become primary breadwinners in patriarchal households—creates such volatile relational friction. From the Momtok aesthetic to the systemic roots of oversharing, this episode examines how religious conditioning prepares women for the camera while simultaneously stifling their personal development.Beyond the viral TikToks, the conversation tackles the heavy reality of identity foreclosure and arrested development, explaining why early marriage often leads to acting out later in life. Buckner provides a compassionate, trauma-informed perspective on the cast's experiences, specifically looking at somatic symptoms of sexual trauma and the ways purity culture inflates and weaponizes the concept of cheating. Whether you are a fan of the show or a survivor of a high-control group, this episode offers a frank discussion on generational trauma, the lack of boundaries inherent in confession culture, and why some therapists actually recommend this reality TV trainwreck as a legitimate tool for deconstructing religious trauma. This podcast is brought to you by the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery: an online trauma coaching company whose practitioners are trauma informed and trauma trained to work with individuals, couples and families who have experienced high control religion, cults, and religious trauma. James and Robert are back with another episode of The Double Cleanse, and this week they're calling out performative influencer culture! From the fake "minimal beauty routines" to the virtue signalling... it's all getting addressed. We're kicking off the episode by diving into the rise of wellness supplements disguised as skincare. From Medicube's collagen tongue strips to the Korean pick-and-mix supplement shops that feel like Crocs with Jibbitz, they're questioning whether any of this actually works or if it's just fun theatre. The real conversation starts when James and Robert tackle the performative influencer behaviours that are taking over social media – particularly the sudden trend of everyone claiming to have a "minimal routine" despite having PR rooms full of hundreds of products. James and Robert aren't buying it! They discuss how influencers are trying to separate themselves from the negative perception of beauty influencers by pretending to be low-maintenance, anti-consumerist, or morally superior... when in reality they're still promoting products left and right. The twins call out the hypocrisy of dermatologists who claim they "never do sponsored posts" (which just means they don't trust themselves to stay honest), and they champion genuinely authentic creators who aren't afraid to recommend other brands even while running their own. The key message? The general public isn't as stupid as some influencers think – people can see right through the performative nonsense. If you grew up with Dolly magazine, woke up with Today, or unwound with The Project, Lisa Wilkinson has likely been the voice in the room for most of your life. After one of the most turbulent chapters of her career and a high-profile legal battle, Lisa has stepped away from the cameras to uncover a story lost to time. We’re sitting down with the media veteran to discuss her new book, The Titanic Story of Evelyn, which follows the extraordinary life of Evelyn Marsden; the only Australian-born survivor of the Titanic. Lisa reveals how she pieced together this '10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle' to tell a tale of heroism through a female lens. Plus, Lisa opens up about her 'new chapter' after television, the reality of 'rowing against the tide' in the Australian media landscape, and whether she’s got another big story under her hat. This week, we're diving into some truly unhinged situations and we have a lot of thoughts. First of all… are men okay??? We unpack a story about a girl stuck in traffic with a full-blown pee emergency, and somehow her boyfriend manages to make it about his ego… over a pee funnel. Then it only gets crazier. A listener writes in about a random woman showing up at her house *twice* with receipts exposing her boyfriend… and somehow he still tries to gaslight her. We also get an update from a listener who finally walked away from her toxic job (we're so proud of you

In this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I sit down with Denmark-based coach and hybrid athlete Andreas Stobberup to talk about bridging serious strength training with high-level endurance performance. Andreas shares his journey from peaking around 250 lbs with a 405 bench and 600+ squat to dropping to 205 and completing a full Ironman in 9:52—while continuing to coach athletes across disciplines. We discuss the reality gap between amateur and elite performance, how influencer culture often strips context from training advice, and why fundamentals still win: training, nutrition, sleep, and measurable outputs. We break down common misunderstandings around Zone 2 training, why pros don't train the way social media says they do, and how strength athletes can intelligently add conditioning without compromising lifting. We also cover VO₂ max development, microdosing cardio, output-based tracking (times, power, lactate), and how to think about HRV and wearable data in context. If you're interested in hybrid training, improving conditioning without sacrificing muscle, or understanding how to measure what actually matters, this one is packed with practical insight. What's the biggest driver of sales on the platform? It's price. Price is more important than influencer culture when it comes to driving sales in the TikTok shop, the data shows that over half of TikTok shoppers are primarily motivated by discounts. In this episode of Uncommon Sense, I'm calling out a problem no one wants to confront: the normalization of partying, drinking, and casual sex especially among so-called “conservative influencers.”You cannot claim to defend Western Civilization while publicly celebrating the very behaviors that destroyed past civilizations. Conservatism without morality is just aesthetic rebellion. We don't need more clout, cocktails, or compromised values. We need a return to godliness, self-discipline, and moral responsibility because the future generations watching us will inherit whatever standard we tolerate today. If we want to save the West, we have to get serious about being truly Christian again.--https://www.bible.com/

In this episode of Don't Depend on Daddy, we dive into the neuroscience of dopamine and how influencer culture rewires our brains for constant desire. From endless scrolling to impulse shopping, we explore the slot machine psychology behind why we crave novelty, how social proof keeps us stuck in the loop, and what it really takes to break free. You'll learn:
Ever scroll your feed and feel buried in the glossy lives of influencers and #ad captions? You pause, you like, you move on, but a little doubt lingers. Is this real, or just another paid pitch? Influencer culture exploded in the early 2010s, pushed by Instagram and later TikTok. It has given influencers the power to shape opinions, habits and purchases. Here's the problem; it's tough to separate genuine influencers from polished salespeople. This episode cuts through the noise. You'll learn clear, practical ways to spot authentic voices, who live with integrity and add real value to the world.
In this eye-opening episode of Fishing Without Bait, host Jim Ellermeyer is joined once again by producer Mike Sorg to explore how modern media shapes our identities, fuels our purchases, and even distorts our sense of self-worth. From emotional manipulation in advertising to influencer culture and data-driven targeting, Jim and Mike unpack the psychological tactics behind today's media and tech. How does a Power Glove from the '80s connect to the viral influencer culture of today? Are we in control of our choices—or are we reacting without realizing it? In this episode: • Why media makes us feel “less than” • Celebrity endorsements vs. authentic influence • Targeted ads, data mining, and algorithmic persuasion • Unrealistic expectations and identity loss in the digital age • The mental health toll of comparison culture • What it really means to be unmanageable • Mindful practices to resist manipulation “It's much easier to fool someone than to convince them they're being fooled.” Take a breath. Check the facts. And most importantly—remember who you are.

Wellness influencers are perfecting the art of turning pseudoscience into profit. Whether they're selling supplements, offering classes, or just chasing engagement, an army of wellness grifters has weaponized mistrust of institutions and Big Pharma, peddling false health claims that trick people into treatments and practices that are ineffective at best, and in some cases outright dangerous. Last week the Trump administration claimed without evidence that Tylenol during pregnancy causes autism. The science is clear that it isn't true, but that didn’t matter. Doctors pushed back, but the damage was already done—because wellness influencers pounced. They didn’t just spread the fear, they profited off it. And suddenly, one of the only safe pain relievers for pregnant women became the latest weapon in a war over women’s health. Once again, Trump and RFK Jr are playing disingenuous, dangerous political games with women's health and wellbeing. This isn’t just about Tylenol. It’s about how wellness influencers turn misinformation into a business model—and how their influence helped shape a dangerous narrative straight out of the White House. Mallory DeMille, content creator and correspondent on the podcast Conspirituality, has been pushing back against these dangerous grifters with hilarious videos and posts that make fun of their most ridiculous claims. Last week, the Vatican welcomed thousands of Internet evangelists to Rome for the Jubilee for Digital Missionaries and Influencers. Why would they do this? Why does it matter? What are the dangers of Catholics entangling themselves in Influencer Culture? And what does Emily really think about the word “Influencer”? We're tackling all that and more this week, on Visitation Sessions. (Also, after we recorded this episode, Emily got word that a problem at the printers will be delaying the release of Around the Catholic Table by a few weeks. The new launch date is now set for Tuesday, September 3. It's still coming soon, though, so apologies for the wrong info in the show. Tired of the endless influencer-driven trends, fluffy hashtags, and the message that wellness is something you buy? Darlene takes us back to the roots, uncovering how self-care originated in social justice and chronic illness spaces, and how it became a commodity in recent years. You'll learn why self-care isn't selfish and how it enables you to show up more powerfully for yourself and others. Drawing from his experience managing multiple social platforms for content creators and apostolates, Grady makes a bold claim: if influencers and digital missionaries aren't Christ-focused, they shouldn't be doing the work at all. In this episode, he unpacks the heart behind authentic digital ministry, tells the story of how he got started, and explains why everyone online has the power to influence others in ways they may never realize. Send us a textWelcome back to DMR “Untold: The Liver King,” directed by Joe Pearlman, is a gripping 68-minute episode from Netflix's Untold documentary series that dives into the rise and fall of Brian “Liver King” Johnson. Known for his primal lifestyle, raw organ-meat diet, and hyper-masculine branding, Johnson built a massive social media following and a supplement empire generating over $100 million annually. The documentary blends satire with introspection as it explores his extravagant persona—complete with meat feasts, caveman aesthetics, and dramatic horseback stunts—alongside his personal background and family dynamics. At the heart of the film is Johnson's shocking steroid scandal: after long denying performance-enhancing drug use, leaked emails and a public confession revealed he was spending over $11,000 a month on steroids and HGH. The film ultimately acts as both a cautionary tale about the dangers of influencer culture and health misinformation, and a character study of a man who, even after being exposed, remains a captivating and controversial figure. This has also now spilled into a very public battle between The Liver King & Joe Rogan, wild stuff!I also discuss my own peronal experience with the Carnivore Diet and what it did for me.Enjoy - DMRSupport the showThe audio clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review. Influencers are the people (women!) that people (women!) love to hate. But they also have a huge cultural and economic impact. It's tangly, and Author and Podcaster Jo Piazza has been reporting on influencer culture for over 5 years. Her new book, Everyone is Lying To You, is a thriller set in the world of trad-wife influencers, and I loved it so much I had to sit down and talk to her about what we love (and loathe) about this industry. Jo's book, Everyone Is Lying To You is out July 15, 2025 and worth a pre-order! In this sharp and thought-provoking conversation, Jo Piazza dives into her new novel, Everyone Is Lying To You, a bold takedown of the tradwife trend and toxic influencer culture. She unpacks the power of storytelling as a tool for cultural critique, challenging the curated, unrealistic portrayals of women's lives online. The episode explores themes of agency, gender roles, and the societal pressures women navigate daily—while showcasing how fiction can reveal deeper truths about our world. What We're Talking About... Jo Piazza identifies as a storyteller, not a content creator. The tradwife phenomenon often masks the loss of women's agency. Influencer culture presents an unrealistic lifestyle that many aspire to. Women are experiencing burnout from the pressures of girl boss culture. The left struggles with branding and losing the culture wars. It's possible to have it all, but it requires systemic support. Fiction can serve as a powerful tool for cultural critique. Research into tradwives reveals a deeper cultural trend. Influencers often rent spaces to create idealized content. The reality of motherhood and work is often misrepresented in media.
