Kerri Sackville is a prolific writer who, on top of her columns in the Sydney Morning Herald, Sunday Life and Melbourne Age, has published five bestselling books. Her response to the Five Of My Life challenge was deeply personal, thought provoking and, ultimately, uplifting. I used to consume lots of content. I used to listen to podcasts while running or driving, watch YouTube videos when having breakfast, and read online articles while queuing at the supermarket. I would squeeze in a bit of learning every time I could. I no longer do that. In 2023, I read Kerri Sackville's "The Secret Life of You: How a bit of alone time can change your life, relationships, and maybe the world." Kerri's stories made me realise I wasn't spending enough time "alone with my thoughts," I phrase I now love. I invited Kerri to share her stories and ideas on my channel. She's an Australian media personality. She's appeared several times on national Australian TV and radio, and she's a regular writer for Sunday Life Magazine, Sydney Morning Herald, and Melbourne Age. She's also the author of 5 non-fiction books. "The Secret Life of You" is her latest one. Read it. It'll change your life. Thanks to those who submitted questions for Kerri, and enjoy the conversation. In this revealing podcast, Kerri Sackville, one of Australia's most prominent columnists and popular writers discusses her writing life, and in particular, her unique relationship to, and with anxiety – how it helps her, hinders her and why it's the creative force that underpins much of her work. We wanted to highlight some amazing moments of the podcast from March to April. This Episode FeaturesKate Ceberano: Revered Melbourne artist finds her at the dawn of a new era. Kates 30th album, My Life Is A Symphony, released this month is a breathtaking celebration of her songwriting, featuring her most iconic songs, Brave and Pash, and personal favorites from across her four-decade recording career, reimagined with Kate at a new peak of command amid the grandeur of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Unfolding on orchestral stages nationally, the epic musical setting is an apt reflection of an assured rise to the pinnacles of rock, pop, soul and jazz. Silva Mcleod: The first Tongan woman to become an airline pilot. She's still one of only a handful. Told by Silva with frankness and wit, it's quite a story. Silva takes us on a journey of cultural change from her beginnings as a poor island girl to her marriage to an Australian. The challenges of pursuing a flying career and its impact on her family are set against the backdrop of the love story of her life with her husband and his battle with cancer.Kerri Sackville: columnist and Author decided to stop filling every idle moment with distraction and learn to be comfortable alone, her quality of life soared. From boosting creativity and productivity, improving self-awareness, building resilience and moral courage, to improving relationships and connection with others, a bit of alone time is vital to well-being. “I was alone in the middle of a forest, hanging from a zipline fifty metres above the ground. This was not within my comfort zone: I am a suburban mum whose idea of adventure is to get a double shot of coffee in my mocha. Still, I was with my two daughters on holidays in Tasmania, and we had decided to try ziplining for fun. The journey up the mountain had been exhilarating, but when I reached the top, the ride jolted to a halt and I was left dangling alone in mid-air.This was not fun at all.I hung there amid the treetops, my kids and the zipline staff shrunken to tiny specks in the distance. Up there in the air, cut off from the world, I suddenly felt profoundly and unspeakably alone. There was just me and the trees and the little gusts of breeze and quite remarkable silence. I could hear my own breath in my ears, incredibly loud, and I realised I was panicking. I instinctively reached for my phone, but, of course, it wasn't there. It was in my bag at the zipline base, six hundred metres away.I wanted my phone and I really, desperately, wanted to get down.I'm not afraid of heights, and I wasn't afraid of falling; I was very securely strapped in. It was the silence and the solitude that were terrifying. I closed my eyes and I wished for the ride to end.”Why is it so scary to be alone with your own thoughts? When columnist and commentator Kerri Sackville decided to stop filling every idle moment with distraction and learn to be comfortable alone, her quality of life soared. From boosting creativity and productivity, improving self-awareness, building resilience and moral courage, to improving relationships and connection with others, a bit of alone time is vital to well-being. What if I told you, that there was a simple way to improve your creativity, self-awareness, focus, concentration, and reduce your stress and anxiety? It's free. It's not exercise. It's not sleep.Any ideas?Turns out - a way to achieve all of those things is solitude. Not sitting in a room alone on your phone, or watching telly - no.That's not it.Solitude.Just being with your thoughts.Yet Solitude is an interesting thing isn't it?Too much of it is a bit hard to come back from. Not enough of it - and life can become quite difficult. But what about making time to find it, deliberately? Is it even a good idea?Turns out - it is.A very good idea. And Kerri Sackville has done her homework, written a book about it and is here to chat about it.Particularly about what happens to us when we seek out too little, and too much of it.As someone who's done both - I found this conversation fascinating, and I changed my daily habits because of it.Kerri Sackville is an Australian writer who is a regular columnist for Sunday Life magazine, Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age.Over the years, Kerri has appeared frequently on commercial and ABC radio networks, podcasts, and TV shows including Sunrise, The Morning Show and The Daily Edition. She's written five books, including her latest “The secret life of you” which is about spending time alone. If you can't recall the last time that happened, this conversation might be what you need to help you carve out some time to make it happen.Kerri is a hoot.Enjoy this , I certainly did.Stay up to date on more upcoming NTNNNNN shows by joining the mailing list here: Osher Günsberg - Better Than Yesterday Podcast | LinktreeAnything else? What's changed in that time? And what are the conversations we're fed up with having? Owen Wilson is soon to star as a certain painter in an amazing looking movie, in house art critic Myf Warhurst tells you everything you need to know. And Jamie Lee Curtis has captured a feeling, crying out for nanna gigs for those of us who like an early night. With fashion weeks and awards ceremonies allowing for many a catwalk and red carpet, the disappearing of clothing in the name of empowerment and fashion has us thinking. We're not alone, as Kerri Sackville wonders if men should be chasing that same empowerment through shedding cloth. As mums we both love our kids but we often struggle to find the daily grind of mothering enjoyable. In a recent article by the NY Times article, Jessica Grose writes that it isn’t just us 21st century mums living in an Insta-perfect era who are finding it hard - she has proof that mums have felt the same for centuries. Five years ago Kerri's marriage of 17 years ended. When she started dating again she made every mistake known to womankind. She swiped right on scammers and fakers, spent weeks fruitlessly texting, agreed to long dates with the wrong men, and got involved with hot messes and commitment-phobes. Author and blogger Kerri Sackville has built a loyal and engaged following on social media, particularly Facebook. While many individuals ('personal brands') despair over the ever-diminishing organic reach of their Facebook Brand Pages, Kerri's Facebook updates consistently generate considerable engagement (likes, comments, shares etc), while her quirky short videos attract up to 5000 views (not bad considering her Facebook page has under 5000 'likes'). In this chat with Trevor Young, Kerri discusses the importance of genuinely loving your audience, having a strong opinion, showing your personality on social media, and why being true to yourself when it comes to creating content is critical in building a loyal audience.
