While we've been known to occasionally make up our own words, our guests in this week's special episode do it for a living. David J. Peterson and Jessie Peterson are professional linguists and conlangers—those are people who construct their own languages—and you've heard their work in Dune, Shadow & Bone, Elemental, Game of Thrones and, of course, The Witcher. What's involved in creating an all-new language? How long does the process take? How difficult is it to teach it to actors? And have they created any swear words of which they're particularly proud? (Look, you knew we were going to ask.) David and Jessie answer these questions and many more, while sharing secrets about the musical language they created for Sirens of the Deep. They even answer one of our burning questions about the film's ending, so while you may not end the episode fluent in the elder tongue, you WILL learn something new. You can find David J. Peterson on Bluesky and AO3 at @dedalvs and on Instagram at @athdavrazar. Jessie Peterson can be found at @quothalinguist on both Bluesky and Instagram, and her Conlang Year experience can be found at quothalinguist.com. Watch David and Jessie conlang live at @LangTimeStudio on YouTube.
Netflix's second anime film version of The Witcher has dropped, this time featuring Geralt of Rivia in an adventure called Sirens of the Deep. While some Witcher fans may not be pleased by the liberties taken in this adaptation of a story by author Andrzej Sapkowski, Monte and DoA found it to be charmingly reminiscent of a quest from The Witcher series of video games. With the departure of Henry Cavill from the Netflix series, this movie uses Geralt's voice actor from the games, Doug Cockle, alongside support actors from the live-action show Joey Batey and Anya Chalotra. In spite of the occasionally over-the-top anime action, both Sirens of the Deep and Nightmare of the Wolf offer more satisfying Witcher stories than most of the episodes of the TV series and should amuse fans of the IP. Jaskier, the bard in the Witcher series, seems to follow his dreams in our reality as well. Joey Batey, the actor that plays Jaskier, is also in a dramatic, lyrical alt folk band, formed by himself and vocalist Madeline Hyland named The Amazing Devil when they met as working actors for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2014. For all its evil mages, freaky monsters, and conquest-minded kings, music has always been an important part of The Witcher. And while Dandelion may love to take credit, we know that it's really the hard work of some talented composers who have shaped and finessed the sound of this world that we've all come to love. In this episode, we're raising a glass to them as we revisit the music of Netflix's Witcher, discussing what we feel works and what doesn't on each of the five released soundtracks, and highlighting a few of our favorite songs from all three seasons of The Witcher, plus Nightmare of the Wolf and Blood Origin. It's everything you need to put together the perfect monster-slaying (or bottle-killing) playlist!

The cast of the new Witcher prequel series - four episodes hitting Netflix on Christmas Day, as you do - chat with Ali about baths, staffs, warhammers, regular hammers, shooting in Iceland, shooting in caves, the glory that is Michelle Yeoh as well as that pesky "Conjunction of the Spheres". Fair warning: Ali's a bit poorly, so he's even more eccentric than normal. Yeah... that's saying something, for sure.

Holy smokes, it's a whole new year! The show is officially a year old, and we're celebrating the start of season two(!) with a monstrous episode full of hijinks! This month the Library Pros™ learn what boofing is *spoiler alert: Matt's wrong*, we see the return of Peach Powered Thighs, we all agree that Joe Rogan has a very punchable voice, and that we still hate Ronald Regan. Heather introduces us to Diamond Dick (we promise, it isn't what you think), Matt's book might change the world, and Brittany teaches us about the Kombucha Lady. And somewhere between Matt's Ivermectin Advice and Laurel's uncharacteristically "cute" read, Brittany and Heather get on their School Library Soapbox. P.S. Hey, Nicholas Sparks? Joey Batey did it better! DISCLAIMER: This episode is a doozy, and it's manly because Heather and Brittany spend a solid 20 minutes discussing a Tennessee school board's recent banning of the graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman. This is an unusually political and heavy episode of Top Shelf Librarians, and though we know that isn't necessarily what you listen to our show for, we thought it was important to keep it in the episode. We live in times where a book about the Holocaust has been banned. Freedom to Read is critical to a successful democracy. We didn't want to add to the censorship by editing ourselves on this subject. We believe it is vital to talk about, and we hope you agree. Book Mentions: Matt: Sapiens: a Graphic History: The Birth of Humanknd by Yuval Noah Harari Laurel: Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún by Nagabe No One is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood Brittany: Pity the Reader: On Writing with Style by Kurt Vonnegut and Susanne McConnell Things in Jars by Jess Kidd Nothing but Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire Heather: Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley The Burning: Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 by Tim Madigan (adapted for Young Readers by Hilary Beard) As ever, thank you to Shane Ivers of Silvermansound.com for the use of VHS Dreams as our intro and outro music.

The Witcher is back on Netflix for a second series - and to celebrate, Ali was lucky enough to talk to the likes of Anya Chalotra, Joey Batey, Freya Allan and newcomer Kim Bodnia about the success of the first series (and the books and the games, lest we forget). Oh, and some Henry Cavill fella goes into beautifully nerdy detail about the role of Geralt Of Rivia, The Witcher himself, touching on everything from the voice to the sword skills to the wig to the... almost everything, really!
