Last year, I did a video on How to Donate Effectively, where we explored the idea that one of the ultimate status symbols is creating your own charitable foundation—and how to make a real impact with your giving. In my latest video I interview John Bromley, the Founder and CEO of Charitable Impact, the platform we personally use to make giving easier and more effective. John has dedicated his career to helping Canadians maximize their impact through strategic giving. In this podcast episode you'll discover: Why Charitable Impact was created. How Charitable Impact works for donors. Why open a personal charitable foundation? Donor-advised funds vs. private foundations. Should you involve your family in charitable giving? What happens to your foundation after you pass away? Does Charitable Impact help you find the right charity? Why donate? What is a proactive donor? Should you have a donation plan? Can others contribute to your foundation? The future of charitable giving. Biggest challenges & focus areas for charitable giving. What larger donors need to know. How to choose the right cause for your values.

In this episode of the Nonprofit Exchange, I had the pleasure of speaking with John Bromley from Charitable Impact, a platform dedicated to enhancing charitable giving. We explored the concept of generosity and the vision behind the staggering 1.4 billion Canadian dollars in donations facilitated through their donor-advised fund. Sean shared his background, highlighting his family's legacy in charity law and his journey into the charitable sector. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the donor's experience, allowing individuals to navigate their own giving journeys without being pressured to support specific charities. This approach fosters a sense of agency and joy in giving, which is often overlooked in discussions about philanthropy. We discussed the dual impact of giving: the positive effects on both the recipient and the donor. Sean pointed out that while it's crucial to understand the impact of our donations, we should also recognize the personal fulfillment that comes from giving. He encouraged listeners to embrace the complexities of charitable giving, likening it to learning a musical instrument or cooking—both challenging yet rewarding endeavors. Sean explained the mechanics of donor-advised funds, which serve as a flexible tool for managing charitable contributions. He highlighted that anyone can be a philanthropist, regardless of the amount they can give, and that the joy of giving comes from the journey of making informed choices about where to allocate funds. Throughout our conversation, Sean provided valuable insights into how donors can better understand their motivations and the importance of tracking the impact of their contributions. He also addressed the misconceptions that nonprofit leaders may have about donor motivations and the need for a more nuanced understanding of the giving landscape. In closing, Sean encouraged everyone to engage in charitable giving as a lifelong journey, emphasizing that it's okay to make mistakes along the way. The key is to learn from those experiences and continue to find joy in the act of giving. This episode serves as a reminder that generosity is not just about the money we give, but about the connections we make and the positive changes we inspire in the world. Charity is an important part of any financial discussion, but do Canadians join in that discusssion? And if not, why not? John Bromley, CEO of Charitable Impact, joins us to look at philanthropy.
An interesting realization that I've had while trying to craft this is, it's not easy to talk about charity. In fact it's downright uncomfortable. There's a lot of psychological factors at play wherever you are on the spectrum of “being charitable”. If you don't give, you may feel guilty that you don't. Or you don't give enough, or if you do give enough you don't want to talk about it, so you don't seem like you're being “holier than thou”. Regardless which bucket we fall into, we can all agree that giving is important. Whether it's time or money, there's folks a whole heck of a lot less fortunate than us out there. But where do you start? What are the tax benefits? Our guest on this episode of “Guide 2 the Grind” is John Bromley, CEO of Charitable Impact. Charitable Impact is designed to help individuals and companies make more knowledgeable charity contributions without having to do all the research themselves. As well, they help folks realize the tax benefits without having to commit to a specific charity right away. It's a really interesting model, and one that's helped facilitate $1.2 billion of donations since its inception. www.guidetothegrind.com

Ep 454 - The Power of Giving Guest: John Bromley By Stuart McNish In the book “Why Good Things Happen to Good People,” Stephen Post writes that “giving to others” has been shown to increase health benefits. A separate study by Michael Norton from Harvard Business School revealed that “people are happier when they spend money on others versus themselves.” These are all wonderful reasons to give. As Martin McNish stated in “Give a Damn” (a Conversations That Matter episode), “giving proves that you can make a difference in the lives of others and to not give is to give up on the belief that you can make a difference.” Give a Damn is a small crowdfunding not-for-profit that raises money for micro-charities that do not have the resources to fundraise. Here's the challenge, says McNish. “We too are small and only have limited resources, all of which are dedicated to raising awareness and money for other charities.” Enter Charitable Impact, a Vancouver-based foundation that was created to help donors and charities connect. John Bromley says, “It started with the goal of making it easier for people to come together to change the world.” We invited John Bromley of Charitable Impact to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the power of giving. Meet John. He's tired of seeing donor advised funds sitting around unspent. He's democratized the DAF world, and he wants you and your kids to be an active part of the giving community. You see, once he recognized a need to make giving more accessible and more effective, he launched Charitable Impact which nurtures generosity within each person and bring resources for creating change in the world to everyone. In short, it's a super cool giving platform that makes even a $5 feel like a serious investment in philanthropy. Together, we're talking basics (what the heck is a donor advised fund?) but also talking about how to make our personal philanthropy intentional rather than reactive.Episode HighlightsJohn's story and journey to where he is today (2:00)Donor fatigue and the current state of giving today (8:30)Giving proactively vs. reactively (15:00)An overview of Donor Advised Funds (18:00)Features and benefits of DAFs (24:00)Addressing hoarding within DAFs and Foundations (31:00)An overview of Charitable Impact (34:00)A powerful moment of philanthropy in John's life (41:00)John's One Good Thing: Ask yourself: Are you charitable?
