While there are thousands of RIAs, only a small portion have truly differentiated their businesses and their "why" in a way that allows them to create a unique brand identity. Abacus Wealth Partners, led by CEO Neela Hummel, has grown to over $3 billion in AUM by ensuring the firm - no matter how large it becomes - stays true to its core values and identity. Abacus was the first certified B-Corp in financial services, and Neela shares with Emigrant's Mark Bruno how this has allowed the firm to speak directly to a targeted segment of investors - and employees - and "differentiate by design."

Leaving by ship from Glasgow, Scotland, he determined to travel in steerage class to see how the working classes fared. At the last minute he was convinced by friends to purchase a ticket one grade above the lowest price, for which he was later thankful after seeing the conditions in steerage, but he still lived among the 'lower' classes. His comments on the experience make interesting reading. His father however was so shocked at the thought of his son associating with people 'beneath him' that the work was not published for a number of years, (Summary by annise)Genre(s): *Non-fiction, Travel & GeographyLanguage: EnglishKeyword(s): emigrant (2), steerage (1), trans atlantic (1Support Us: https://libri-vox.org/donate

During the First World War, over 300,000 Italian emigrants returned to Italy from around the world to perform their conscripted military service, a mass mobilisation which was a uniquely Italian phenomenon. But what happened to these men following their arrival and once the war had ended? In Emigrant Soldiers: Mobilising Italians Abroad in the First World War (Cambridge UP, 2025) Dr. Selena Daly reconstructs the lives of these emigrant soldiers before, during and after the First World War, considering their motivations, combat experiences, demobilisation, and lives under Fascism and in the Second World War. Adopting a micro-historical approach, Emigrant Soldiers explores the diverse fates of four men who returned from the United States, Brazil, France, and Britain, interwoven with accounts of other emigrants from across Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. Through letters, diaries, memoirs, oral histories, newspapers, and diplomatic reports, Dr. Daly focuses on the experiences and voices of the emigrant soldiers, providing a new global account of Italians during the First World War. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.

Perceptions of the United States as a nation of immigrants are so commonplace that its history as a nation of emigrants is forgotten. However, once the United States came into existence, its citizens immediately asserted rights to emigrate for political allegiances elsewhere. Quitting the Nation: Emigrant Rights in North America (UNC Press, 2024) recovers this unfamiliar story by braiding the histories of citizenship and the North American borderlands to explain the evolution of emigrant rights between 1750 and 1870. Eric R. Schlereth traces the legal and political origins of emigrant rights in contests to decide who possessed them and who did not. At the same time, it follows the thousands of people that exercised emigration right citizenship by leaving the United States for settlements elsewhere in North America. Ultimately, Schlereth shows that national allegiance was often no more powerful than the freedom to cast it aside. The advent of emigrant rights had lasting implications, for it suggested that people are free to move throughout the world and to decide for themselves the nation they belong to. This claim remains urgent in the twenty-first century as limitations on personal mobility persist inside the United States and at its borders. This interview was conducted by Hannah Nolan, a PhD Candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her work focuses upon the intersection of memory, partisanship, and ethnic identity during the early republic to explore the construction of Irish and American identities in the United States. Today, as the founder of Buffini & Company, the largest business training company in North America, he is one of the nation's top business experts. In his engaging  book, THE EMIGRANT EDGE: How To Make It Big In America (Howard Books, August 2017), he shares the secret of his success: a mix of seven qualities that make up what he calls the Emigrant Edge.“Successful immigrants think and work differently than the average American,” Buffini writes. “When they leave everything behind, they keep their dream of success uppermost in their mind.” Through his own experiences as well as those of others, Buffini describes how the sacrifices made to come to America, the lack of a safety net, and the advantages of a fresh start, set the stage for success. The good news for everyone, Buffini says, is that the seven traits immigrants share are wholly transferable, no matter where a person is born, or what his or her circumstances are.“Imitating these traits will equip anyone to thrive and succeed,” he contends.Learn more: https://www.brianbuffini.com/the-emigrant-edge.aspx

3M faced a dual settlement, first with the SEC and then with OFAC, over alleged Iranian sanctions violations stemming from misconceptions and oversights in a license plate deal with a German intermediary. Despite the gravity of the case, 3M took proactive remedial actions, including voluntary disclosure and internal changes. Similarly, Emigrant Bank maintained a CD account for two Iranian residents for over two decades without proper screening, leading to a $31,000 settlement. In this episode of Corruption, Crime and Compliance, Michael Volkov shares details of both cases, underscoring the complexities of navigating sanctions regulations, the consequences of compliance failures, and the pivotal role of voluntary disclosure and proactive remediation in mitigating penalties. You'll hear Michael talk about:3M settled with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for $6.5 million and with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for $9.6 million over alleged violations of Iranian sanctions. 3M's Dubai-based subsidiary entered into a deal to manufacture reflective license plate sheeting for a German company, but it misunderstood the end user, believing it was a reseller when it was actually Iran. Between 2016 and 2018, 3M sent 43 shipments to the German intermediary, who resold them to Iran, violating OFAC regulations. This led to 54 violations of the Iran sanctions program. 3M's compliance team approved the deal without realizing the true end user was in Iran. Suggestions to review the deal were ignored, and steps were taken to conceal its true nature. 3M took remedial steps, including voluntary disclosure, termination or discipline of involved employees, leadership changes, revamped sanctions compliance training, and discontinuation of business with the German reseller. In another case, Emigrant Bank maintained a certificate of deposit (CD) account for two Iranian residents from 1995 until 2021 without properly screening it for sanctions issues. In 2016, when the account holders requested a wire transfer, Emigrant became aware of potential sanctions issues but still approved the transfer. In 2019, Emigrant's upgraded screening software flagged the account, but the compliance team overrode the alert based on erroneous guidance from the 2016 wire transfer. Emigrant recognized the account's status in 2021, closed it, and took steps to remediate compliance program shortcomings.Emigrant settled the matter for $31,000, significantly lower than the maximum penalty applicable ($9.9 million), with voluntary disclosure and proactive remediation efforts considered mitigating factors by OFAC.KEY QUOTES“In the course of setting up this agreement, numerous managers at 3M suggested that trade compliance reviewed the deal. But these 60 suggestions were ignored by the deal's proponents. Even worse, a 3M subsidiary received an outside due diligence report, flagging the connection to Iranian law enforcement, and closed the matter without further investigation.” - Michael Volkov“On September 21 of this year, OFAC announced that Emigrant agreed to pay $31,867 to resolve 30 violations of the Iran Sanctions Program. The violations all relate to a single CD account that Emigrant maintained for two Iranian residents from 1995 until it closed the account in 2021.” - Michael Volkov“In 2019, Emigrant upgraded its screening software, sanctioned screening, and the new program flagged the account as problematic due to the account holder's Iranian residency. However, software is only effective as its operator. Upon review, Emigrant's compliance team overrode the alert, basing their decision on erroneous guidance from the 2016 wire transfer. Now, Emigrant finally recognized the account status in 2021 and took steps to remediate its compliance program shortcomings.” - Michael VolkovResourcesMichael Volkov on LinkedIn | TwitterThe Volkov Law Group

“We believe it is our obligation to understand and learn from the past,” Elder Henry B. Eyring, then of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, remarked on Sept. 11, 2007, at an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The massacre is perhaps the grimmest episode in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — when brewing tensions between early Church pioneers and immigrants traveling through the Utah Territory erupted, resulting in the death of some 100 people. In 2008, the book “Massacre at Mountain Meadows” explored the complicated history of the 1857 event. The sequel, “Vengeance Is Mine: The Mountain Meadows Massacre and Its Aftermath,” is now available. Authors Richard E.
