In Louisiana, all eyes are on the saltwater wedge slowly moving up the Mississippi River, threatening the drinking water supplies for much of the southeastern part of the state. Salt water is unsafe to drink, but it  also poses an insidious risk to the region's water infrastructure, where it could linger in lead pipes.  Federal, state and local officials are implementing several solutions to prevent the briny water from encroaching on local drinking supplies and causing harm to the infrastructure – and in the meantime, health officials have plans to implement more frequent testing of water supplies.   Louisiana state health officer Dr. Joseph Kanter joins us to discuss the health risks of saltwater exposure and how Louisianans can stay safe and prepared. Two French photographers – Audoin de Vergnette and Wayan Barre – spent the summer documenting life down the bayou in Terrebonne Parish. They traveled throughout the area, documenting Indigenous French culture and learning how coastal communities are confronting climate change.  They join us for more on their experience within the community and the photos they took, which will be on display at Pointe-aux-Chenes' new elementary school starting this week.  The Crescent City Chamber Music Festival is gearing up for its eighth season with seven free concerts across New Orleans. Festival director, violist and native New Orleanian Luke Fleming joins us to talk about what it's been like to bring string instrumentalists from around the world to perform in his hometown. Louisianans will soon have access to a new COVID-19 booster shot that targets today's most common omicron strains. State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter tells us why it's important to roll up our sleeves now as the flu season fast approaches.  Roots of Fire, a documentary that celebrates the history of Cajun Music and highlights the musicians working to preserve it, will premiere at the   New Orleans Film Society this Fall. Filmmakers Abby Berendt Lavoi and Jeremy Lavoi tell us about the five Grammy-award winning Cajun musicians featured in the film who are bringing the sounds of their ancestors into the 21 century.  In Louisiana we are still remembering former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu who died last week at the age of 92. Landrieu, was a white Democrat who opposed segregation in the 1960s and '70s and won office  with rare support from across the racial divide. His daughter, former U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, spoke to NPR's Ari Shapiro about her father's legacy. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. Opioid use disorder (OUD) during pregnancy contributes to maternal death and poor birth outcomes. Although prenatal care can reduce these effects, pregnant individuals may delay care due to concerns about stereotyping and stigmatizing by providers. The relationship between a physician and their patient may also be strained by mandated reporting of substance use to law enforcement or social services, and related fears of parent-child separation and criminalization. Such fears may present additional barriers to receiving prenatal care. In this episode, Dr. Joseph Kanter, the current state health official of Louisiana, and Dr. Amy Ladley, Program Manager for the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative, discuss Louisiana's approach to reducing stigma and fears of criminalization around opioid use in pregnant and postpartum individuals. They also highlight the importance of partnerships in these efforts.
