In S5 E2 I am delighted to welcome Dr Joshua D Hartzell MD MS-HPEd FACP FIDSA to the podcast. Dr Hartzell is an Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine Physician and a retired Army Colonel who has spent 25 years in military medicine. He is also the author of a fantastic new book : A Prescription for Caring in Healthcare Leadership: Building a Culture of Compassion and Excellence. Throughout his career Dr Hartzell has held numerous leadership positions including being Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency and Assistant Chief of Graduate Medical Education at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at the Uniformed Services University. He deployed as a Battalion Surgeon with the 82 nd Airborne Division to Afghanistan. He is also faculty at the MGH Institute of Health Professions where he teaches leadership development. As a practising clinician he has devoted the last decade to developing leaders training and teaching thousands of students, residents, and faculty within healthcare. Josh hashas delivered over 100 talks on leadership development and has writtennumerous papers on the topic. He combines his years of boots on the ground leading in medicine with his research to teach other leaders practical strategies about how to sharpen their leadership skills in his book. In this conversation I have the joy of exploring Josh's own story of self and motivation to write this book. He discusses the practicalities and process of writing and publishing in addition to his personal and professional purpose in sharing the strategy, art and practical application of leadership in healthcare. In this book he weaves science and story together in a very accessible format making this book both an enjoyable read but an enduring manual to re-visit again and again. We discuss feedback, sponsorship, organisational communication and "aggressive listening" as a leader in addition to leading and caring for self and others. There are many, many leadership books in the world but Josh provides a unique lens and needed prescription for healthcare today and going forward.Links/References/Further Reading:Dr Joshua Hartzell https://joshuahartzellmd.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshhartzellmd/Josh's reading recommendationshttps://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0BNKXF3VQ?ref_=mr_direct_us_au_au&showmrihttps://danielcoyle.com/the-culture-code/https://www.hayhouse.com.au/lead-from-the-heart-ebook The Mind Full Medic Podcast is proudly sponsored by the MBA NSW-ACT Find out more about their service or donate today at www.mbansw.org.auDisclaimer: The content in this podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. He also is the founder of the Breadchain co-operative, which we will talk about later. Joshua recently published a wonderful book titled “Blockchain Radicals: How Capitalism Ruined Crypto and How to Fix It,” which got the co-sign of Vitalik Buterin, the brain behind Ethereum. In our discussion, Joshua illuminates the misconceptions often assumed by people on "The Left" with regard to cryptocurrency. He details the ways that capitalist has influenced the crypto space and proposes paths toward rectifying its course. The discussion covers the origins and history of crypto, the politics of Bitcoin & Ethereum, misconceptions surrounding NFTs and environmental concerns, the radical potential of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), and various practical examples of how leftist/socialist/communist organizers can make use cryptocurrency and blockchain technology more broadly. This comprehensive two-part chat provides deep dives into the practical applications and real-world implications of blockchain technology in fostering post-capitalist forms of organization, challenging both enthusiasts and skeptics to rethink their assumptions about crypto. When we hear the term “blockchain,” we immediately think of libertarians and capitalists. Crypto bros. They have been dominating that space but they don't hold a monopoly on it, and our guest, Joshua Dávila, AKA The Blockchain Socialist, refuses to cede the ground. In this episode he and Steve discuss the need for bridging the gap between technical knowledge and social understanding because blockchain technology can be a valuable organizing tool for socialists.Joshua suggests creating collective wallets and experimenting with democratic input in economic institutions as a starting point. He also speaks of the potential of blockchain technology in creating a new economic system that challenges the existing power structures. The space of what is economically possible is much wider than many realize. (As MMTers, we agree.) Joshua believes the tools provided by digital systems can be used to create post-capitalist systems that compete with the existing globalized digital economy. He challenges the notion that the tools used in libertarian economic systems cannot be leveraged for post-capitalist ones.Check out his blog, The Blockchain Socialist.Joshua Dávila is an author, expert on blockchain technology, and the creator of The Blockchain Socialist blog and podcast. It is not surprising, however, that the crypto space has also become overrun by unscrupulous marketing, theft and scams. The problem is real, but it isn't a new one. Capitalism has ruined crypto, but that shouldn't be the end of it.Blockchain Radicals shows us how this has happened, and how to fix crypto in a way that is understandable for those who have never owned a cryptocurrency as well as those who are building their own decentralised applications. Covering everything from how Bitcoin saved WikiLeaks to decentralised finance, worker cooperatives, the environmental impact ofBitcoin and NFTs, and the crypto commons, it shows how these new tools can be used to challenge capitalism and build a better world for all of us.While crypto is often thought of as being synonymous with unbridled capitalism, Blockchain Radicals shows instead how the technology can and has been used for more radical purposes, beyond individual profit and towards collective autonomy.Support the showSupport the podcast:Linktree: https://linktr.ee/acidhorizonAcid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastZer0 Books and Repeater Media Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comOrder 'Anti-Oculus: A Philosophy of Escape': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/anti-oculus-a-philosophy-of-escape/Order 'The Philosopher's Tarot': https://repeaterbooks.com/product/the-philosophers-tarot/Subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhiHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comRevolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/ and https://thecominginsurrection.bandcamp.com/

In the Letter to the Hebrews, the “consciousness of sin” is a present problem for the recipients as a stain that causes dread, timidity, and restricted access, and it is also a “cosmic” problem, with the heavenly tabernacle needing to be purged of defilement. The seventeenth century Reformed Orthodox discussions of the work of Christ and its various doctrinal constitutive elements were rich and multifaceted, ranging across biblical and exegetical, historical, philosophical, and theological fields of inquiry. Among the most contested questions in these discussions was the question of the necessity of Christ's satisfaction. Joshua D. Schendel's The Necessity of Christ's Satisfaction (Brill, 2022) sets that "great controverted point," as Richard Baxter called it, in its historical and traditionary contexts and provides a philosophical and theological analysis of the arguments offered by two representative Reformed scholastic theologians, William Twisse and John Owen. Joshua Greene discusses two psychological research projects aimed at broadening the scope of human altruism and cooperation. The first (with Lucius Caviola) aims to expand the circle of effective giving. They show that ordinary donors are happy to give effectively, provided that it is part of a bundled donation including a personal favorite charity. They explain the appeal of bundled donations and show that economic incentives can boost their appeal. This research led them to create GivingMultiplier.org, which incentives bundled donations using a self-sustaining system of micro-matching. Since launching in late 2020, Giving Multiplier has raised over 1.6 million USD, mostly from donors who are new to effective giving. The second project (with Evan Defilippis) aims to reduce political animosity using a scalable online quiz game (“RedBrain BlueBrain”). Republicans and Democrats play as partners and succeed by reaching mutually rewarding compromises. Two large-scale, preregistered experiments showed that an hour of game play can produce warmer attitudes toward the political out-group, with effects lasting up to four months. These two projects address different problems, but they are grounded in the same empirically informed conception of human nature: people are reciprocal cooperators, driven by emotions that limit their scope of moral concern. However, people are capable of moral expansion through rationally structured opportunities and experiences.View the original talk and video here.Effective Altruism is a social movement dedicated to finding ways to do the most good possible, whether through charitable donations, career choices, or volunteer projects. In the 1920s, Józef Piłsudski was a household name not just in Poland, but across Europe and across the Atlantic Ocean as well. Yet this complex and contradictory figure – a socialist and a nationalist, a clandestine agitator and a legendary military strategist, protector of Jews and other national minorities on Polish soil who was nonetheless often accused of imperialism – has eluded serious biographical treatment in English until now. Yeshiva University professor Joshua D. Zimmerman offers a nuanced, readable, and definitive account of the man who re-founded the independent state of Poland in 1918. Jozef Pilsudski: Founding Father of Modern Poland (Harvard University Press, 2022) could not be more timely, given the lessons to be learned from Piłsudski's career by today's opponents of far-right populism in Eastern Europe, and even more urgently – by English-language readers seeking to understand the imperative of preserving an independent Ukrainian state in the face of Russian aggression. Piotr H. Kosicki is Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of Catholics on the Barricades (Yale, 2018) and editor, among others, of Political Exile in the Global Twentieth Century (with Wolfram Kaiser). Learn more about your ad choices. The war in Ukraine has added urgency to Europe's efforts to end its dependency on Russian natural gas. In the US, a shift toward efficiency and renewables is important for both geopolitical and environmental reasons. So, how can we do it? How much natural gas can we export to Europe? How can we reinforce our electrical grids and power them with non-carbon-emitting sources? And how can consumers play their part? Josh talks with Joshua D. Rhodes of the University of Texas about speeding the energy transition on this electrifying episode of Very Serious. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
