We start this one a bit off the rails with talk on why you make an Old Fashioned with sugar cubes, a mysterious scent wafting about in our home, and an experience with a haunted dog. Now that's what we call perfume podcasting! Once we settle into the actual program, we discuss Hiram Green's new fragrance announcement, baby perfumes, and what we're in the mood for by way of scentwear right now. Plus, we share our wonderment of Fragrantica's Instagram clone, Fragram. Oh, and we debate the idea of a peanut inspired perfume as it resurfaces unsavory peanut breath memories from Jane's childhood. Streamed live on Aug 13, 2020 #SRFConvocation #TheGuru #Yogananda The Guru's purpose on earth is not to draw anyone to himself, but to guide us back to God. As part of the Day 5 (Thursday) schedule of the 2020 SRF World Convocation, SRF nun Sister Draupadi will give a class discussing how to better tune in with the guidance of the Divine through the Guru. Sister Draupadi will speak to the idea that as we respond to the Guru's loving, internal guidance and strive to embody his teachings, we gradually and automatically become aware of God's presence within us. And we realize that the Guru has given us the greatest possible gift — eternal freedom in God. The 2020 Self-Realization Fellowship World Convocation is a week of free online classes, meditations, virtual pilgrimages to ashram centers where Yogananda lived, kirtans (devotional chanting), and more—offering all seekers of higher consciousness and balanced spiritual living a unique experience of peace and joy. This year SRF is honoring the 100th anniversary of Yogananda's arrival in the West and the beginning of his worldwide work. Co-authors Lydia Hart and Stephen King are back on the podcast to talk about their recently published book, ‘Help! I've Got a Voice Problem'. A book which should belong on every singer and voice user's bookshelf as well as on display in the voice teacher's studio; so that everyone has the opportunity to understand how voice problems can occur. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lydia and Stephen wrote this book for the reader, that's what's different about this book. They didn't want to write another book about voice, they wanted to write all the things that had never been written for all the people out there who are experiencing a voice problem, where those people will have lots of questions. From their work with the NHS and the Voice Care Centre Lydia and Stephen discovered that people with voice issues felt a real lack of empathy right from seeing their GP to diagnosis and if they're lucky a referral to a speech therapist. They're not seeing a doctor that has an understanding or sympathy for somebody that's a professional voice user. There's not just the issue with the voice itself that the book addresses, but also the emotions people may be feeling and the fears they have. In the medical or diagnostic world people have started to refer to the body as a machine and not as a living thing. We are not machines and when being treated should be thought of as what we are, people with emotions. BEST MOMENTS ‘The book is dedicated to everyone without a voice' ‘When framing the journey of voice through a biopsychosocial perspective, all of those questions become clearer' ‘I'm fairly confident that the stuff that we have committed to paper has an almost universal truth about it' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: voicecarecentre.co.uk Social Media: @lydiahartvoice Relevant Links & Mentions: Stewart Harris: https://stewartharrisdesigns.myportfolio.com/ Sing Like Never Before by Justin Stoney with illustrations by Mark Pate: https://singlikeneverbefore.com/ VoiceWork: Art and Science in Changing Voices by Christina Shewell Lydia Flock: https://www.flockstars.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 32 The Bio-Psycho-Social Model with Stephen King: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4R13bvilWjwQnd9WOfTiVc?si=f2b9489b9e914317 Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 58 Understanding the Speaking Voice with Lydia Hart: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5q4JLR8tByssABbUeVNk7F?si=cc1553bd79f54f8c Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 88 What can be Learned from Teaching 100,000 lessons with Bob Marks: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5Nc7qa6VxhYALuamxwgKZB?si=a37c1d39d8a64a24 Help! She works with people experiencing difficulties with their speaking or singing voice, or other throat symptoms. Lydia is known for being vibrant, caring and sensitive, taking time to hold a holistic space for clients to explore and improve their symptoms. Lydia is also a singer, and voice therapy – which ultimately means working with a person, not a diagnosis – is a true vocation for her. Alongside her work at Voice Care Centre, Lydia works for the NHS including the Joint Voice Clinic at Wexham Park Hospital, with leading laryngologist Declan Costello. This involves assessment and management of a range of voice disorders, from muscle tension dysphonia to vocal cord paralysis, and her clinical expertise is constantly expanding. Lydia is dedicated to developing her knowledge and experience in fields outside of Speech and Language Therapy, in order to provide truly holistic, biopsychosocial care. She is currently undertaking a Diploma in Hypnotherapy with Chrysalis Courses, and has trained in manual therapy with Stephen King and most recently Walt Fritz. She is experienced in breath work, including training in Buteyko Breathing Method, and is also undertaking training in Reiki. Lydia incorporates holistic health and wellness into her own life, through natural movement including rock climbing and running, minimal footwear, meditation, breath work and cold water exposure. Stephen King: As a thought leader in the voice health sector, Stephen has been responsible for creating the Voice Care model in the UK and sat at the helm of disseminating the core ideas around Biopsychosocial philosophy. As a Co – Founder of the not for profit Vocal Health Education, he has overseen the education of over 2,000 externally accredited Vocal Health First Aiders and several industry leading Voice Rehabilitation Specialists. As an author, Stephen has co-written Help! I've Got A Voice Problem, with further academic articles published in peer reviewed journals. Within his role as a manual therapy educator, Stephen has delivered masterclasses and seminars across Europe, China and Japan, as well as having written and delivered the UK's only 9 day intensive vocal massage training qualification. Stephen currently sits as the Director of London's award winning, multidisciplinary Voice Care Centre, where he still occasionally gives treatments to people with voice problems seeking biopsychosocial management of their ongoing issues. The Centre for Mental Wellness is Stephen's latest venture, where he intends to build an online, multidisciplinary, evidence based and relational therapy platform to help performing artists in times of mental ill health. In today's episode,Tara chats about our speaking voices. As singers, we need to take equal care with how we talk so that it doesn't cause problems for us when we sing. You can Find The Singer's Feedback Zone here: https://tarab.vipmembervault.com/products/courses/view/21 Let me help get you to that next level of singing! The Speaking Voice—Paying attention to it: You may get a hoarse voice from shouting at a sporting event, screaming at an amusement park, or having to talk over other competing sounds in a restaurant. When we talk too loudly, we put too much pressure on our vocal folds—too much air pressing through, creating a tired voice. Talking too low can also hurt our voices. It puts a strain on the vocal folds by constantly putting pressed air through the entire vocal fold and having them at their thickest. We may push it out with the musculature of the throat versus good support. It pushes the larynx down—not keeping the layrnx neutral. Talking too high for your natural voice. With anxiety or nervousness, it can force you voice higher and again puts pressure on the larynx going up. Tension is created and that's why it's going up. It makes you have vocal fatigue or soreness. Vocal fry. Even though it's not necessarily bad, but it can create your vocal memory doing something without enough breath support even in your singing because it's remembering your speaking voice. The article from John Hopkins Medicine: “When you use vocal fry, you relax your vocal cords but do not increase the amount of air you're pushing past your vocal cords, which produces slower vibrations and ultimately results in the lower, creaky sound.” Talking in a breathy soft sound. It's similar to vocal fry where not a lot of breath pressure happens. But the problem is that the voice gets held back, creating tension. It tries to control so it's not too loud and therefore creates rigidity in the voice. That creates a lack of resonance as well—resonance that “brings the voice to life”. “ So much of singing is about letting go of trying to control, ‘cause controlling can create that tension. We want to be tension-free.” “The way that we use our pitches—our brain is also remembering every day—it's remembering how we use our breath… and so we will tend to repeat what we did the day before.” “Your speaking voice IS your singing voice so don't treat it differently!” You can listen on Amazon Audible music, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, iHeart radio, PlayerFM Stitcher, Spotify and more. This week's guest is specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Lydia Hart. Lydia specialises in the field of Voice and Upper Airway and also works for the NHS and in the Joint Voice Clinic at Wexham Park Hospital. She joins Alexa on Singing Teacher's Talk to talk about the work she does as an SLT and how that can help you as a singing teacher. KEY TAKEAWAYS Speech and language therapy provides treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are allied health professionals. They work with parents, carers and other professionals, such as teachers, nurses, occupational therapists and doctors. Training to become an SLT involves a two year Masters or four year Undergrad Degree. Most places where you might study, voice will only be a small part of your course. You can choose to do your research or dissertation on it, but there are a lot of other components that aren't related to the voice. The GRBAS scale (grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, strain) is the main tool used in auditory-perceptual evaluation, which physicians. and speech pathologists use to subjectively assess the degree and quality of hoarseness. It does not include pitch or volume. The GRBAS scale is as follows: grade 1 (subjectively normal voice), grade 2 (mild dysphonia), grade 3 (moderate dysphonia), grade 4 (severe dysphonia), and grade 5 (aphonic) plus use of additional qualifiers used as necessary - for example, breathy, strained BEST MOMENTS ‘The longer I've worked in this field… I'm realising that we overpathologize so much' ‘If I hear a voice that sounds a bit unusual then I might do a mental GRBAS of it' ‘If you know your own body then you'll know if you're getting reflux' EPISODE RESOURCES BAST Training Guest Website: www.lydiahartvoice.com Social Media: @lydiahartvoice Relevant Links & Mentions: Voice Care Centre: voicecarecentre.co.uk Vocal Health Education: vocalhealtlh.co.uk Declan Costello: www.voicedoctor.co.uk University of Reading: http://www.reading.ac.uk/ GRBAS Scale PPI = Proton Pump Inhibitor Stephen King Singing Teacher's Talk Podcast; Episode 32 - The Bio-Psycho-Social Model with Stephen King NeilMed Saline Nasal Rinse Tor Spence: voicefituk.co.uk; @voicefituk ABOUT THE GUEST Lydia Hart is a specialist Speech and Language Therapist, working in the field of Voice and Upper Airway. “You set the tone for your podcast by how you sound and how you interact with the audience. So there are a lot of elements to it, you know, obviously preparation and planning and practice, all those things." -- Dan Friedman This week continues our Clubhouse discussion as voiceover artist and sound engineer Dan Friedman answers questions about voice training, keeping listeners engaged, and overcoming stage fright. As always, if you have any questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, just visit http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) where you'll find all sorts of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter (on the http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) webpage) will let you know when the new podcasts are available. An Audio-Driven World We continue the Clubhouse chat by talking about how subtle changes to pitch and tone can change a listener's impression of your voice, and the challenges and successes that artists coming from different audio industries, such as radio and lecturing, can find in voiceover work. “Because we are in such an audio-driven world now,” Dan says, “it is really important that if, especially if you're running a podcast and you want more listeners, or you want listeners to stick with you, you have to be compelling enough that they are going to want to continue to listen and to tune in every week.” Getting Out of a Rut Dan warns us about some of the traps of voice rehearsal, how easy it can be to get stuck in a loop of negative self-criticism when listening to your own voice, and some creative ways to break out of that vicious circle. "One of the most fun and extreme things to just really get out of your rut," he suggests, "if you realize you're in a rut, is to do your script as a cartoon character." He explains that once you've done so and then immediately switch back to your regular voice, you'll probably find that the performance feels fresh again and you can jump back into it with a different energy. They Want to Hear You “If you think about it,” Dan says, “communication is a connection between somebody making sound and somebody listening to sound, and if you're trying to make sound and spread that connection out to a hundred people, that connection's going to be pretty weak.” We wrap the Clubhouse chat up with a look at the challenges of public speaking and different strategies for overcoming stage fright, such as imagining an individual that you're speaking to or even focusing on one person in the audience rather than trying to talk to everyone at once. “Most of the time when you are up there speaking to a roomful of people,” he assures us, “those people are there because they want to hear you.” Episode Summary How inflection can change the impression you make Keeping your listeners engaged Tips for breaking out of a voice performance rut Public speaking and overcoming stage fright Connect with Dan: Website: https://sound4vo.com/ (https://sound4vo.com/) Connect with Dan Friedman on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danfriedmanvo (https://www.linkedin.com/in/danfriedmanvo) Follow Dan Friedman on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Sound4VO/ (https://www.facebook.com/Sound4VO/) Follow Dan Friedman on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanFriedmanVO (https://twitter.com/DanFriedmanVO) The Power of Sound club on Clubhouse: https://www.clubhouse.com/club/the-power-of-sound/ (https://www.clubhouse.com/club/the-power-of-sound/) Connect with the Audio Branding Podcast: Book your project with https://voiceoversandvocals.com/ (Voice Overs and Vocals) https://voiceoversandvocals.com/ (https://voiceoversandvocals.com) Tweet with me on https://twitter.com/JodiKrangle (Twitter) - https://twitter.com/JodiKrangle (https://twitter.com/JodiKrangle) Watch the Audio Branding Podcast on...
“When we're talking about audio-only formats, it's especially important that you capture your audience using your voice and it should be impactful so that they tune in and want to continue listening. It only takes seven seconds for somebody to decide they want to change the station, whether that be a song they like or don't like or something that they're hearing that they're not liking." - Dan Friedman Using your voice to communicate isn't as easy as it sounds. So what do you do if you feel your voice is letting you down? Would you like some personal techniques to help you improve how you sound and your confidence in speaking? Then this is the right podcast for you. I recorded an excellent Clubhouse discussion with Dan Friedman, an expert in the field of public speaking who's certified in the Roger Love Voice Method. Those of us in the voice-over industry already know Dan as an accomplished audio engineer, but he's also a singer, voice actor, and voice coach, and I'll be having a more in-depth interview with him a little later on. So settle back and let yourself be a fly on the wall as we discuss the power of using your voice for more effective communication. A few things to note. First, I was hearing and answering people a little ahead of when the audio was being recorded. That's why my occasional comments are slightly out of sync: it didn't sound that way at the time. And, just so you know, everyone in the room was aware that it was being recorded and would be released in a future podcast episode. To those who raised their hands to participate in the conversation: thank you. When you asked for advice, you helped everyone understand the issues better. So well done! I'll have more of these types of discussions in the future – they're on Wednesdays at 2 PM Eastern Time – so keep a lookout for the schedule of upcoming events in the Clubhouse club, The Power of Sound. As always, if you have any questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter (on the http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) webpage) will let you know when the new podcasts are available. The Sound of Your Voice We begin the chat with a talk about ways to build confidence in our speaking, and how awkward just hearing our own voice can be at first. “The lack of confidence,” Dan explains, “usually comes from people hearing their recorded voice for the first time and not really realizing how they actually sound.” He suggests ways of breaking out of a monotone, such as singing just a little, and listening carefully to the natural rhythm of your voice so you'll know how to change things up. “Everybody needs to be able to communicate effectively these days,” he says, “especially through audio only.” Going Over the Top “Voiceover,” Dan tells us, “is really kind of you at your very best in whatever emotion you're in.” We discuss the value of tone and pitch, and how well a monotone voice can work (or NOT work) without visual cues. Dan notes that in audio directing, emotions are often a little over the top, and he answers questions about improving your voice, becoming comfortable with it, and the trick to understanding how you're being perceived by your listener. “Getting to like the sound of your voice really does take time.” Imagine You're a Balloon Dan takes a question from Lisa about the importance of matching your listener's tone, and tips on how to avoid the glottal stop that many of us have when it comes to vowel sounds. We also talk about how to overcome vocal fry by breathing and speaking through your diaphragm, as if you're a balloon. “When you breathe, you should be breathing in through your nose as often as possible and not through your...

After a slight digression on dealing with hay fever, we are continuing with our resonance training. In this episode, we will work on increasing our resonance awareness in order to find vocal variety and expression in our speaking voice. We will talk about primary and secondary resonance spaces, and we will practice some exploration exercises to identify the areas of our vocal tract we can use to manipulate resonance. What You Will Learn in This Episode: - What are the elements involved in resonance, according to Michael McCallion - Exploration exercises to increase resonance awareness - What are the three spaces where primary resonance happens - What is the difference between primary and secondary resonance spaces The primary resonance spaces are ideal for exploring a variety of tonal qualities in the voice, for accessing different emotional vibes, and taking listeners on an inspirational journey through our voices. Secondary resonance spaces are more controversial, as some people feel they help change our voice tone, some people don't. In any case, resonance awareness is a powerful tool and a valuable asset to improve our voicing. Do you like the sound of your voice when speaking English? Do you feel that you use it to its full potential? Can people hear you well? I don't mean the metaphorical way of speaking “is your voice heard”' – I mean – is your voice carried across the room and gets into people's ears? Can you express different emotions using your voice? Do you feel that your voice is varied and interesting? Or is it monotone? People tend to dislike their voices. In fact, I remember vividly the time when I used to record my voice on an answering machine and I HATED playing it back. When it comes to speaking a second language it becomes even more challenging. Because, it's not enough that we have all those other aspects of a language to deal with (vocabulary, pronunciation, Grammar, etc. ) sometimes, oftentimes, speakers of English as a second language change, manipulate or HIDE their voices when speaking English. But unlike other physical features, we're born with – our height, body shape, eyesight – your voice is something you CAN control. If only you knew how. In this episode, you will learn how to understand your voice, get comfortable with it, and discover a few exercises that will help you free your voice and discover new placements, expressions, and power.
