“All his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.” — Ecclesiastes 2:23That verse from Ecclesiastes reveals a painful truth: even a productive life can feel empty when the wrong purpose drives our work. Wealth on its own doesn't bring peace—often, it brings more pressure. But Scripture offers a better way. What's Driving All That Effort? It's easy to admire someone who plans wisely, saves consistently, and builds steadily over time. Our culture praises that kind of discipline as responsible and virtuous—and often, it is. But Ecclesiastes challenges us to ask: What's driving all that effort? In Ecclesiastes 2:18, the Preacher writes, “I hated all my toil... seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me.” He isn't condemning hard work—he's grieving that all he's built will one day be handed off, possibly to someone who won't value or steward it well. That's where sorrow begins—not in failure, but in success without peace. “All his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest” (Ecclesiastes 2:23). The more we accumulate, the more we fear losing it. What promised security only multiplies anxiety. What a striking image—someone lying awake at night, not from failure, but from success. The more he possesses, the more he worries. This is the irony of accumulation: it convinces us that security is just one more achievement away, while quietly making us more anxious the more we gain.Jesus' Warning About Bigger BarnsJesus echoes this same warning in Luke 12. He tells the parable of a rich man who reaped such a bountiful harvest that he decided to build bigger barns to store it all. His conclusion? “Take life easy—eat, drink, and be merry.” To the world, that sounds like winning. But Jesus calls him a fool. Why? Because that very night, his life would be demanded of him. Then comes the haunting question: “The things you have prepared, whose will they be?”What's even more interesting is the context of that parable. Jesus tells it in response to a man asking Him to settle an inheritance dispute. This wasn't someone who earned the wealth—he simply wanted his share, and maybe more. Jesus' warning is clear: a greedy heart isn't the only danger. An entitled heart is just as spiritually destructive. And that's exactly what the Preacher feared in Ecclesiastes—wealth falling into the hands of someone who didn't labor for it and may not know how to handle it wisely. We see this all the time in real life. Many financial advisors and estate planners will tell you that inherited wealth, especially when passed down without spiritual or emotional maturity, can do more harm than good. It can fracture families, distort priorities, and erode purpose. The problem isn't money itself, it's the absence of wisdom alongside it.A Better Definition of SuccessThat's why this lesson matters. You can save well, build wealth, and still feel anxious and unsatisfied—not because you failed, but because you expected your efforts to give you what only God can: peace, joy, and purpose. But here's the good news—Ecclesiastes doesn't leave us in despair. In verse 26, we read, “To the one who pleases Him, God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy.” The solution isn't to stop working or saving. The solution is to stop worshiping our work. Stop defining success by the size of your bank account and start defining it by your faithfulness to the One who owns it all. When we live as stewards instead of owners, the pressure lifts. We begin to see wealth not as a prize to secure our future, but as a tool to serve God's Kingdom. Accumulation loses its grip, and generosity takes root. That's when real joy begins. So, ask yourself today: Am I building bigger barns, or am I faithfully stewarding what God has already entrusted to me? Am I chasing peace through my possessions, or receiving it from the Prince of Peace Himself?Because in the end, peace doesn't come from what we've earned. It comes from who we trust.A Resource to Go Deeper: Wisdom Over WealthNow, if you're wrestling with these questions, we'd love to help. In this episode of Shark Theory, hosted by Baylor Barbee, the concept of authenticity in a world obsessed with perfection is explored. Through a candid discussion, Baylor sheds light on the importance of embracing the messiness behind the perfect facades we often present to the world. With personal anecdotes and thought-provoking insights, he challenges the listener to reevaluate the façade of perfection and appreciate the inherent chaos in life. Drawing from his own experiences of producing a podcast, Baylor articulates the metaphor of the organized front facing the world versus the chaos that lurks behind it. In today's society, where comparison and idolization are prevalent, he emphasizes the need to stop idolizing seemingly flawless individuals. He underscores that behind every flawless Instagram post or successful endeavor lies a complex and untidy reality. The discussion extends to the dangers of the comparison game and how embracing one's imperfections can foster genuine connections and personal growth. Key Takeaways: Authenticity requires acknowledging and accepting the chaos behind the facade of perfection. Idolizing perfection can lead to unhealthy comparisons and unrealistic expectations. Showing vulnerability and imperfections builds genuine relationships and trust. The pratfall effect suggests a leader's mistake can enhance their relatability and approachability. Embracing life's messiness is essential for personal and professional growth. Notable Quotes: "Beyond the forward-facing version of ourselves is an absolute mess." "Don't idolize people so much because nobody's as perfect as they make out to be." "Be sure that we're not trying to come off too perfect. The most authentic thing you can do is show people the mess in your life." "Showing your flaws, showing that you're not perfect, not only humanizes you but has people relate to you." "Be okay with the mess. It's a part of the process. It's a part of who you are."
“I said in my heart, ‘Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.' But behold, this also was vanity.” — Ecclesiastes 2:1What happens when someone has the power to indulge in every pleasure the world can offer? In Ecclesiastes, we find one of Scripture's boldest experiments: a search for lasting joy through earthly delights. The Preacher—often thought to be Solomon—pursues laughter, wine, work, wealth, sex, and success, all in an effort to answer one question: Can pleasure truly satisfy the human soul?A Culture Chasing the WindToday, we live in a world that echoes the Preacher's experiment. “Treat yourself.” “Follow your heart.” “Do what makes you happy.” These aren't just slogans—they're mantras for modern living. From the vacations we plan to the gadgets we unbox, we're told that happiness is just one more swipe, scroll, or splurge away. But Ecclesiastes challenges that narrative. It forces us to wrestle with a deeper question: What if pleasure doesn't lead where we think it does? The Preacher's pursuit wasn't careless. It was a deliberate, calculated test. He writes, “Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them” (Ecclesiastes 2:10). He built houses, planted vineyards, created lush gardens, hired singers, amassed wealth, surrounded himself with comfort—even concubines. This wasn't indulgence for indulgence's sake. It was a methodical pursuit of happiness. Today, we might say: “If it looked fun, I bought it. If it felt good, I did it.” The experiment was thorough, and the results were heartbreaking.“Behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind.” — Ecclesiastes 1:14The Thrill FadesTo picture this, imagine a bag of old receipts. Each one once captured a moment of excitement—a new purchase, a fancy dinner, a spontaneous trip. But now? They're just scraps. The joy is gone. That's exactly what the Preacher realized. Pleasure was never meant to carry the weight of our deepest needs. It promises fulfillment but delivers only fleeting escape. It's like trying to hold smoke in your hands—real for a moment, then gone. The Preacher's story finds a parallel in Jesus' parable of the prodigal son. The younger son squandered his inheritance chasing worldly pleasures, only to end up broke and broken. The twist? The Preacher had everything the prodigal son dreamed of—wealth, opportunity, indulgence—and yet he ended up just as empty.Different paths. Same conclusion.A Warning That Leads to FreedomHere's the grace in all this: We don't have to repeat the experiment. The Preacher's pain can be our wisdom. He's waving us down from the road ahead, saying, “There's nothing here. Don't waste your life chasing shadows.”That's a gift. It frees us to reflect:What am I turning to when I feel tired or discouraged? What “quick fixes” do I reach for without thinking? What would it look like to seek joy in God instead?God is not against pleasure. He is the Creator of joy and the Giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). But those gifts were never meant to replace Him. When we look to pleasure as the destination rather than a signpost to the Giver, we miss the point—and our hearts remain restless. So next time you reach for something to lift your spirits, ask: Is this joy, or just escape? Is this feeding my soul, or simply distracting it?A Better Way to LiveEcclesiastes doesn't just warn—it redirects. It helps us tear down the idol of pleasure and place our hope in a Person, not a product. And that Person—our God—is the only source of joy that doesn't fade.At FaithFi, we want to help you explore this truth more deeply. That's why we created Wisdom Over Wealth, a Bible study on Ecclesiastes that unpacks themes like pleasure, wealth, and contentment from a biblical lens. This month, when you support FaithFi's ministry with a gift of $35 or more, we'd love to send you a copy as our way of saying thank you. Since I'm not very experienced with this process, are there any specific forms or steps I need to take at the closing of the sale? I recently made a claim for a new roof, and my insurance went up. Do insurance companies research when you've made a claim on the internet or through a database? I was told by two roofers I didn't need a new roof, but the insurance company insisted I did. I have some money in a credit union that I want to move somewhere to earn more interest. I just discovered I can use my Fidelity account for investing, and they're offering 4%. I'm wondering about the difference between keeping my money in my Fidelity account or moving it to an online bank, and what the benefits might be.Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (C.L.U.E.)Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money (Pre-Order)Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Every Day with Jesus - Acts 2.42-47, Ephesians 4.11-16, Matthew 28.18-20Jobey McGintyGod's design for the local church is to gather His people regularly for daily life in Christ, to be built up, healed, equipped, and matured so that we can go out and spread the aroma of Christ and make disciples of all nations. Until that desired end and goal, we have the challenges of sin, failures, pride, pain, death, laziness, stubbornness, and a litany of other roadblocks. While the church is not perfect, nor is it easy, Jesus models how we are to enter into that messy, difficult, imperfectness, to bring healing and help. And so we submit and ask the Spirit to work through us to do the same, here and now, in our local churches.
With Valentine's Day in the rearview mirror, we are diving into the challenges of idolizing love. Too many of us are missing the importance of filtering how we view love through Scripture. It's too easy for us to submit to culture and fail at love. Every relationship that we have requires Trust, Communication, and Destination. Red flags don't change colors and walls don't make good listeners. Thank you for listening and sharing this podcast! #LetGodWork[1 Corinthians 13:4-8a][Romans 12:2 & 8]

We live in a world where we hang on the words of our favorite celebrity or influencer. If they say we should get this product, we buy it. If they say we should do XYZ, we do it. But is this really who we should be listening to? Should we take every word they say as truth--even Christian influencers and Pastors? On this episode of Everyday Theology, Ravae shares with us some of the dangers that can come from who we follow and sometimes ultimately idolizing over God.Resources:Celebrities for Jesus | https://bit.ly/3W7CRhRSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, I dive into the biblical concept of idolizing pain and its detrimental effects on our spiritual lives. By examining the ways in which we may inadvertently make our pain an idol, we can better understand the importance of surrendering our suffering to God and trusting in His plan for our lives. In this episode, we will explore how idolizing pain can lead to distraction from God, hindrance to spiritual growth, impairment of faith, prolongation of suffering, disconnection from others, and a distorted perspective on God. Through this discussion, I aim to encourage you to recognize the significance of releasing their pain and grief to God, allowing for true healing, growth, and the experience of God's peace and joy. Basically as a pothead I feel like non potheads judge us with the assumption that we are lazy and stupid. Last weeks episode was about an incident at school where I, Justin Barone, your friendly neighbourhood pothead was the voice of reason. Or rather at least more level headed than some of my parenting peers. Which surprised me because I am the pothead of the group. In this instance, where everyone reacted rather than thinking it through. I prevailed as the more level headed member of the group. I attribute that to the fact that I smoke weed quite honestly. It got me thinking that in most cases if there were an issue at hand. A group of people would not necessarily look to the pothead for guidance or leadership. But in this case, I reacted to the situation and reached out. Everyone just said, "ok lets see what happens after Justin does a little digging." Quite honestly it amazed me that everyones reaction was going to be based on what I was able to do about the situation. Ultimately it got me thinking about how in society we still have a misconception of the capabilities of potheads. All I'm saying is, it's ok to trust a pothead. In that vein I some how got around to discussing Lt. Dan. You know the Florida man who tried to live through Hurricane Milton on a dingy in the ocean. It just amazed me how quickly society idolizes idiots. How quickly we support lunacy and urge it to run it's course. I feel like some how those idiots get categorized as potheads too. Which really just hurts our street cred man. Not all potheads are token idiots. Most of us are hard working, logical, laid back people who enjoy introspective thought, silliness and a relaxing time. All we want to do is smoke a joint think about life's possibilities and eat our favourite snack. Hope you enjoy the sesh! Many church services are centered on entertainment, which opens the door for celebrity pastors. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar talk about how the focus of many churches has shifted from preaching the gospel to getting more people in the doors. This man-centered approach leads churches to prioritize charisma over genuine spiritual leadership. The goal should be to live, preach, and be forgotten, magnifying the Lord rather than the individual. True pastoral leadership is about shepherding souls, not cultivating personal fame. One of the dangers of celebrity pastoralism is the gravitational pull such pastors create, drawing followers toward them rather than toward Christ. A meaningful relationship with a local pastor is crucial because your local pastor cares for your soul, while an online influencer may be more focused on views. The issue is not necessarily with well-followed pastors, but with our human tendency to idolize them. We turn them into prophets, forgetting that our closeness to God comes through Jesus. To avoid idolizing pastors, we must remember they are flawed, like all of us. Instead of placing them on pedestals, we should pray for them. When looking for a church, it is essential to examine the humility and Christ-centered focus of the leadership. Good leaders are concerned about the lost and should live with authenticity, treating others with love and respect. As Oscar shared, after witnessing two personal pastors disqualify themselves, he became more grateful for those who live authentically. We should gravitate toward our local pastors, observing how they live their lives and interact with others. Accountability is key, as pastors without it may feel isolated, fearing they have no one to turn to when they struggle. The fall of a pastor often begins when they lose accountability, surround themselves with yes-men, or stop seeking God wholeheartedly. If a pastor finds themselves entangled in sin, they should first turn to their spouse and open up to their leadership team. Holding onto celebrity power will only lead to further downfall. God, who provides in pastorship, will continue to provide outside of it. Righteousness matters more than maintaining a position. For soul care, pastors must have fellowship with others in ministry and maintain a transparent devotional life. A straying pastor often lacks this connection with God. Pastors, like all of us, are placed in positions by God's grace alone, and the church is not about one individual. It is a body, where Christ is the head, providing the perfect example of true servant leadership.Send us a text Thanks for listening! A son's relationship with his father takes him through phases of Idolizing (hero), competition, demonizing (fuck you dad), and ultimately, humanizing. The journey starts with a rebellious departure from the father's guidance. It evolves toward success and a deepened understanding of his father protective intentions. The whole process results in an "amend" phase, where the son reflects on his father's influence—even if it was harsh or abusive—and recognizes the lessons embedded in those experiences. It concludes with thanking his father for his lessons. In a messed up world like ours, the best lessons are usually learned the hard way. Even though the world seems better, danger still exists in unexpected ways. There are always wolves lurking in the bushes. So, sons can't just go out and get free candy out there. If they don't take responsibility & pay their own bills, there will be no one to help them.Sovereign Man welcomes all unclear men who do not know where they are. It helps them find their path and grow, as society needs strong fathers, strong sons and solid men. You're invited to come to a Sovereign Circle meeting to experience it for yourself. On today's episode, we talk about misinformation about the hurricane relief, some movie/tv talk, the phenomenon that is child to adult celebrities, some book talk, and why idolizing a celebrity/influencer is a bad idea. Our view of work might fall into one of two categories: live to work or work to live. If we live to work, then we fall into the temptation of idolizing our work. We often think of idols as statues that primitive people worship or inspirational people. But idols represent anything in creation that we love and serve rather than God. Examples of idols include children, perfectionism, leisure, and even our work. How do we avoid idolizing our work?

It's easy to overlook the things that we put above our relationship with God, whether it's material possessions, success, or even relationships.Idolatry, the act of placing anything above one's devotion to God, remains a poignant topic both historically and in contemporary society. Rylee Meek and Christian Edwards explore this issue, warning against allowing even positive aspects of life, such as church activities or loved ones, to become idols that detract from a relationship with the Creator. Meek, drawing from his observations of modern culture, points out how even spiritual leaders can fall into the trap of idolizing church growth or material success, a theme echoed in popular rap music's glorification of wealth and fame. He also shares the poignant example of Christian Edwards' mother, who unintentionally idolized her children, leading to unhealthy relational dynamics. Edwards, on the other hand, emphasizes the scriptural warnings against idolatry, highlighting how it can manifest in various forms, including the idolization of sports teams, rooted in pride. He suggests that pride lies at the heart of most sins, as it involves prioritizing personal desires over divine commands. Both agree on the necessity of self-examination and daily worship to keep God at the center of one's life, advocating for a routine that fosters spiritual fulfillment over worldly distractions. It's crucial to maintain a healthy balance between our relationships and our faith, ensuring that our focus remains on God above all else.TakeawaysIdolatry can manifest in modern life by prioritizing anything over devotion to God.Money and wealth can become idols if not aligned with seeking first the kingdom of God.Idolizing loved ones or even church-related activities can lead to unhealthy dynamics and shift focus from faith.Idolatry extends beyond physical idols to anything that competes with loyalty to God.Idolizing success or others' opinions can lead to prioritizing desires over God's commands.Starting each day with gratitude and worship can help prioritize God over worldly distractions.Identifying and removing hidden idols in our hearts is crucial to maintaining a strong spiritual connection.Quotes"Idolatry is really anything in creation that competes with our loyalty to our creator." - Christian Edwards"This is something that we need to check ourselves before we wreck ourselves." - Rylee Meek"Anything that rightly belongs to him, if we give it to somebody else, if we worship something else, or somebody else, if we honor somebody more than God, he's that jealous God, because that rightfully belongs to him." - Christian Edwards"These ten commandments are a way for life to actually go well for us. It's not a list of rules and restrictions, but If you follow these commands, life will go well for you." - Rylee Meek"I need to just spend that time with them. And not only is it. It's not just for his glory, it's for our good." - Christian Edwards"When we wake up in the morning is it 'Thank You, Jesus! Thank You, God. I have another day.' Or is it the first thing we go to is social media, or is the first thing we go to is our phone? God demands exclusivity in our lives. Those first fruits are the most value thing we can give him" - Rylee MeekJoin the King's Council Community: https://joinkingscouncil.com/Follow King's Council: https://www.instagram.com/kingscouncilcommunity/Follow Rylee:

The conversation explores the idea that faith is often associated with restrictions and limitations, but it should actually set us free. The Spirit of God works through play and games to bring about freedom. The conversation also touches on the article 'Play and Freedom, Patterns of Life and the Spirit' by Simeon Zahl, which discusses the tension between law and grace in Protestant Christianity. It highlights the need to understand the freedom that comes with the Spirit and the danger of idolizing past patterns of faith. The conversation also delves into the popular notion of destiny and how it can hinder the freedom of the Spirit. In this conversation, Daniel and Kevin discuss the concept of play and its relationship to grace and work. They explore the idea that play is an attitude and an activity that brings joy, freedom, and creativity. They emphasize the importance of play in living a meaningful life and how it can help us overcome the burden of seriousness and unrealistic expectations. They also announce a transition in the podcast to focus on the intersection of play and meaning, with the new name 'Play Saves the World.' Soundbites "What if the point of faith is to set us free for something better?" "The Spirit of God makes freedom a reality through play and games." "Is grace something that removes us from the law or empowers us to keep the law?" "The spirit is playful, meaning that it causes joy and delight." "Play is grace that expresses itself through play." "Play is the overcoming of unnecessary obstacles." Chad Clark is Executive Director here at FaithFi. WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF HAVING A BUDGET?A budget, while essential for managing finances, comes with potential dangers such as idolizing money, succumbing to pride, and relying more on the budget than on God.Idolizing money can occur when constant monitoring of finances leads to an excessive focus on money instead of God.Pride can emerge from achieving financial goals, leading to self-boasting rather than recognizing God's provision.Relying too heavily on a budget may restrict following God's promptings that go beyond our financial plans. HOW CAN WE AVOID THESE DANGERS WHILE USING A BUDGET?To safely use a budget without falling into these traps, it is important to renew our minds with God's Word, give thanks to Him for His provisions, and prioritize obedience to God over strict adherence to the budget.Regularly immersing oneself in scripture helps combat the idolization of money by reminding us that God is our ultimate treasure.Acknowledging God as the source of all wealth and success fosters humility and guards against pride.Being flexible with our budget allows us to respond to God's leading, even when it doesn't align with our financial plans, ensuring our trust remains in Him rather than our financial strategies.
