Kamasi Washington: A jazz genius on collaborative lessons learned from Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, and more

Jazz is a constantly evolving art form, offering some of the richest lessons in creative collaboration. A melody and chord progression provide the foundation, but as each musician brings their unique improvisational perspective, the music takes on unexpected, transformative shapes. If you ask any fan of the genre who's pushing jazz into new territory, Kamasi Washington's name will come up—likely at the very top. His 2015 album The Epic won the American Music Prize and stands, in our opinion, as one of the greatest jazz records of the 21st century. Kamasi contributed to Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly, scored Michelle Obama's Netflix documentary Becoming, and has collaborated with musical legends like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Lauryn Hill, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Chaka Khan, and many more. In this episode, we spent an evening with Kamasi, exploring his creative process, what he's learned from his collaborators, his philosophy on collaboration, and his latest album, Fearless Movement. Find show notes, bonus content, and more on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/kamasi-washington Bio Kamasi Washington, born in Los Angeles in 1981, grew up surrounded by music, with a saxophonist father and a flutist mother who nurtured his musical talent from a young age. Kamasi's journey began with drums and piano in his early years, progressing to the clarinet at age seven and finally to the tenor saxophone at twelve, mirroring his father's path. His high school years at Hamilton High School Music Academy were pivotal; there, he joined the renowned Multi School Jazz Band and learned from jazz icons like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Kamasi's talent was quickly recognized when he won the John Coltrane Saxophone Competition, and he co-founded "The Young Jazz Giants," which marked his early step into professional music. Kamasi's musical evolution continued at UCLA, where he studied ethnomusicology and expanded his understanding of global music traditions. This foundation supported his wide-ranging collaborations beyond jazz, where he worked with artists like Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq, and Kendrick Lamar. Yet, despite his diverse influences, Kamasi remained firmly rooted in jazz, ultimately channeling these experiences into his innovative sound. His 2015 debut album, The Epic, was a monumental release—a three-disc exploration of jazz that introduced a unique blend of spiritual depth and musical complexity. The album garnered critical acclaim, broadening Kamasi's reach and establishing him as a leader in modern jazz. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. The award-winning jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington is back with a new album, “Fearless Movement.” His distinct sound has captured the imagination of many listeners outside of the traditional jazz audience, including a younger crowd. Kamasi grabbed people's attention after collaborating on Kendrick Lamar's groundbreaking record “To Pimp a Butterfly,” and releasing his own three-hour long opus, “The Epic,” just a few months later. He even scored Michelle Obama's documentary “Becoming.” Kamasi joins Tom to talk about his life in music, his new album, and how being a father has limited his time but expanded his approach.

Dunderkattens muskulösa bas blev en sammanhållande kraft på Kendrick Lamars "To pimp a butterfly".

Burning Ambulance Podcast

Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter The 54th episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with trombonist Ryan Porter. If you’ve seen Kamasi Washington live, you’ve seen Ryan Porter — he’s the trombonist standing directly to Kamasi’s left onstage. They’ve been friends since they were kids, growing up in L.A. together and playing on all kinds of projects, including Snoop Dogg’s touring band and the sessions for Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, and of course all of Kamasi’s records like The Epic, Heaven and Earth, Harmony of Difference, the soundtrack to Becoming (the Netflix documentary about Michelle Obama), and more. He’s also played on records by other members of the West Coast Get Down like Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Brandon Coleman. Plus, Porter has made multiple albums of his own, including The Optimist, Force For Good, and Spangle-Lang Lane, which is a collection of children’s music, something we talk about in this interview. He’s also done a lot of session work on his own and as a member of the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, playing on records by Diana Krall, Michael Bublé, Nick Cave, Quincy Jones, Anthony Hamilton and Leon Russell. He gets around. I talked to Porter on Wednesday, June 3. The interview had been booked a week earlier, and by the time it happened, the protests surrounding the killing of George Floyd by the Minneapolis police had gotten well underway across the country – a lot of cities were under curfew, if they hadn’t already been that way because of COVID-19. So to talk about music with a guy who made an album of children’s music, and made two other albums with the titles The Optimist and Force for Good, almost felt like a kind of really dark irony. I mean, is this a particularly optimistic time in American history, the summer of 2020? I don’t think it is, and I’m straight, white, and middle-aged. If I was young, or not white, I would not feel especially optimistic about life in this country, now or in the immediate future. But Ryan Porter is an optimistic guy. He’s clear-eyed about the environment he grew up in, and how it shaped him, and the world he lives in and what he can accomplish, or put across, with his music. But I’m not gonna misrepresent the conversation we had. We talked about art, and creativity, and making a career as a musician and how that’s not just about taking every opportunity you can – sometimes it’s about realizing that you don’t necessarily want to exist on a certain level, and taking a step or two back. Like everyone else I’ve ever had on this show, Ryan Porter is a really smart, perceptive, creative guy, and I think you’re going to enjoy hearing our conversation. If you do enjoy this podcast, please consider visiting patreon.com/burningambulance and becoming a subscriber. For just $5 a month, you can help keep this show and Burning Ambulance as a whole active and thriving. Thanks!

This week, we're dedicating almost an entire episode to one of our favorite musicians: Kamasi Washington! Kamasi is a saxophonist and composer. In the studio, he's played sax and arranged for hitmakers like Kendrick Lamar, Ryan Adams, Snoop Dogg - and that's just naming a handful. On his own, he's a visionary bandleader with over half a dozen solo records to his name. He broke through in 2015, with his three hour long instant classic "The Epic" - a record that found its way to a bunch of top ten lists and renewed a fiery debate in the music world: can a guy like Kamasi, not yet 40, revive jazz and turn it into a young person's game again? He and Jesse talk about his time playing sax in bands, as a composer and bandleader, and his nearly unbeatable Street Fighter II skills. We'll close out this week's show with a treat: a short story from the one and only Simon Rich! He's been a writer for SNL, the New Yorker and much more. He just put out a terrific new short story collection called "Hits and Misses." The outshot is back next week!

If Kamasi Washington’s work on Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 masterpiece To Pimp A Butterfly put Kamasi squarely in the public eye, his double LP The Epic that came a mere two months later launched him into the stratosphere. Washington followed up the audacious Brainfeeder debut with a succinct, and decidedly shorter work entitled The Harmony Of Difference (one of 2017’s very best albums), and now the master of Street Fighter cool is back with his first full length in three years, Heaven & Earth.Built on the foundations of everything that came before with its sights directly aimed at the stars, Heaven & Earth isn’t just a masterful doubling down on the promise of Kamasi’s prior work, it may be one of the most significant pieces of art the 21st Century has produced. Kevin and Eduardo are joined by Philip Basnight (Broke Royals), Ian Taronji (The Lucky So & So's), and Eduardo's real-life brother Rafa (Rafa's One Man Band), for a heady conversation about jazz, life, every other sublime treasure that awaits you in Kamasi Washington's latest masterpiece, Heaven & Earth.Show NotesIncidental music courtesy of Aquatic Gardener. Kamasi Washington's tenor sax is all over music right now. The LA musician has spent a good part of his career collaborating with artists like Lauryn Hill, Chaka Kahn, Flying Lotus and Wayne Shorter, but it was his 2015 three hour long album “The Epic” that made the world stand up and take notice. In the same year, he worked closely with his friend Kendrick Lamar on “To Pimp a Butterfly”, as arranger and tenor sax player; a sound that defined this ground-breaking album.   Kamasi Washington may perform jazz, but his background as a hip-hop head and his penchant for working with people outside of jazz circles mean that he has fans both inside the scene, and people who have never before witnessed an improvised jam. Kamasi's experience base is broad; the lessons he has learned along the way, are legendary. Across five songs this beautiful spirit sat with Zan and opened up about the incredible moments that made him the musician he is today. McCoy Tyner - 'Fly With The Wind' Rick James - 'Bustin' Out (The Funk)' Flying Lotus - 'Cold Dead' Gerald Wilson - 'Detroit' Kendrick Lamar - 'Mortal Man'

Dunderkattens muskulösa bas blev en sammanhållande kraft på Kendrick Lamars banbrytande To pimp a butterfly. Kamasi Washington Talks The Saxophone Chose Him, Almost Becoming A Physicist, Hip Hop Changing How He Plays Jazz, and Improvises “MK1” With Miles MosleyThis week we talk with saxophonist, composer, and jazz aficionado Kamasi Washington. His latest record The Epic is a 3 hour dreamscape through the mind of a master craftsman. LA's jazz scene seems to revolve around a group of friends who've been playing music together since childhood. For example Kamasi has known Thundercat “since he was in his mom's belly.”The players–Kamasi, Terrace, Thundercat, Ronald, Miles, Ambrose, etc–have been getting a lot of shine lately. Many of them worked on Kendrick's To Pimp A Butterfly. But make no mistake, they've been honing their craft in a vibrant LA scene for years.Hear Kamasi Washington talk about how he almost ended up as a physicist instead of a musician, how playing hip hop live changed his thoughts on how to play jazz, and how the saxophone chose him and not the other way around.–Lee See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
