Postpartum is a term that probably everyone has heard before, but few can accurately define it. On this episode of Parenting for the Everyday, we sit down with nurse practitioner Kathryn Walker as she walks us through what postpartum is, what to expect, and what warning signs to look for when something isn't right. This episode is helpful for anyone in this season, soon-to-be in this season, finished this season, or anyone who knows someone who might have a baby in the future.
Many individuals who suffer from vascular diseases such as Peripheral Artery Disease and Chronic Venous Insufficiency are plagued with chronic pain. This ongoing pain can cause a sense of helplessness and frustration, as those affected struggle to regain control over their lives. Take Helen, for example, who finds herself buried under medical bills and unsure of where to turn for relief. She doesn't want to burden her family, but the prospect of managing her chronic pain seems overwhelming. In this episode, Helen shares her story about how she ended up determining that jail was her only option for medical care and pain relief.Kathryn Walker, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and CEO of Rivitalist, a wellness healthcare chain, helps Helen walk us through her story and what was going through her mind when she was arrested as she pretended to attempt to steal items from a Georgia Walmart. Christopher Stout, a vascular surgeon, contributes to the conversation by highlighting the challenges faced by patients with PAD and CVI, such as delayed care, insurance obstacles, and gaps between diagnosis and treatment. These issues can result in chronic pain that can significantly impact patients' daily lives and mental well-being.
Kathryn Walker is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She worked as an Intensive Care Nurse for nine years before attending anesthesia school. She practiced anesthesia of all specialties for eight years before opening Revitalist 2018. Revitalist is a holistic medical space that helps treatment-resistant clients with chronic mood disorders, pain syndromes, and increasing general wellness. As CEO of Revitalist, there are now nine mental health and wellness clinics with revenue surpassing $1 million. One of the modalities used by the integrative team of medical and mental health professionals at Revitalist is ketamine. I talk to Kathryn, or Katie as she likes to be called, about how and why it's used. She takes special care to explain the power of promoting brain growth and how ketamine therapy can open our systems for neuron growth. Katie focuses on advocating for the patient and achieving real growth and positive outcomes, not just putting a band-aid on the problem. This is a fascinating look into how changing our brains can solve trauma and addiction problems. We discuss how these alternative healing modalities can make a difference, and the future looks promising. This episode is also a great look into successful entrepreneurship and helping people through treatment, education, and advocacy. [02:18] The VA has deemed Katie an expert with ketamine. She's also a ketamine subject matter expert. [03:49] Katie was amazed by the results of ketamine. [05:14] Medical providers can confuse patients by not advocating for them. She wanted to build a company that looks at the person at the base and then builds the treatment modalities around that person. [06:14] Katie created Revivalist to be an advocating company that's on the same page with the person. [08:17] Feeling compassion for people who are hurting is learned. It's difficult for physicians and nurses to communicate. This is something that needs to be addressed in the future. [09:03] Katie started her business from the ground up. She wanted to help the people who were struggling who don't know how the system works. [10:33] Katie is standing up and advocating for others who can't advocate for themselves. [12:23] Revivalist is helping with education. Revitalist is having a webinar on January 12th on addiction with veterans and psychedelics. They're also having a January 19th webinar about mitigating risk for first responders with ketamine therapy. [15:12] Ketamine therapy can also be useful for people who have addictions to alcohol. [17:16] The VA is being the leader to trailblaze ketamine therapy. [18:11] How can you treat a drug with a drug? [18:40] Ketamine can be given in any capacity. IV is most effective. Ketamine blocks the NMDA receptors telling the brain to send out more glutamate. The glutamate stimulates the BDNF promoting brain growth. [22:17] With the IV, the ketamine peaks at 45 minutes and then it's out of your system just leaving the brain neuron growth. [23:44] The default mode network is how the brain duplicates what it knows. Understanding the patterns of what our brains are doing helps us to actually address those patterns. [24:55] We are all living in the neutrality of the present, but our past behaviors are duplicated. [25:58] Ketamine brings up previously non-processed experiences and allows us to objectively identify them. [27:58] We hold on to what saved us, not the negativity. [28:41] Our brains want to see the whole picture. If our brains can't see the whole picture, they hold on to something to protect us. [29:15] Ketamine brings up the non-processed short term memories and once we identify them, we can process them. [33:45] Ketamine is taking a drug to fix the root cause of your issues, not taking a drug to replace another drug. [36:01] The negative action of addiction creates a positive reward. Ketamine and psychedelics can reset the default mode network. [38:29] We need to stimulate our brains to maximize its capacity. [41:25] After a ketamine induction series, people only have to go back for occasional boosters if needed. [43:27] Katie shares the different therapies and stages of ketamine therapy. [45:30] Barriers include trying to introduce a brand new model to the established medical community. [47:56] The brain is one structure with so many different pieces. The brain comes first and addiction is second. Looking at the brain will make a big impact. [49:12] A big misconception about psychedelics is only that people who use drugs use them. We need to open the doors to learn more about the treatment. [51:36] Katie shares her hopes and ambitions for her business in five years. She wants to help people understand how to help themselves better. [56:40] Advocating for others is one of the biggest impacts that Katie is trying to make. She also wants to increase access to care. Hosts Interventional Cardiologist Dr. John Phillips and Emmy Award-winning journalist Kym McNicholas are talking about innovation around ALS. Most are familiar with ALS now more than ever because o the famous internet ice bucket challenge involving the pouring of a bucket of ice water over a person's head, either by another person or self-administered, to promote awareness of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , or ALS. ALS is a progressive nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle. Most people with this disease begin with muscle stiffness or weakness. But they eventually lose the ability to walk, dress, write, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe on their own when the muscle paralysis spreads to vital organs such as the lungs. We are talking about it here on the Heart of Innovation for three reasons: First, although it's not considered a vascular disease, some researchers believe that an ALS-linked gene mutation could cause disruptions in the blood-spinal cord barrier, causing the neurovascular inflammatory response, which is ALS; Second, due to the lack of mobility as ALS progresses, many people with ALS end up with circulation issues in the legs (Circulation issues in the legs is known as peripheral vascular disease. We've talked about that at length on this show where arteries start hardening and the flaps that help usher blood flow back to the heart start malfunctioning.); Third, innovation around treatment and disease management has led to a longer, better quality of life for people with ALS due to organizations such as the Gleason Foundation, founded by former New Orleans Saints NFL great Steve Gleason. Kearney Gray, Director of development for the Gleason Foundation talks about how patient-driven innovation with communication and mobility are helping patients to live a longer, better quality of life. The Gleason foundation has played an integral role in raising the patient voice to create change in care, empowering companies to create new, novel approaches to improving communication for people with ALS, and not only educating lawmakers on ALS, but inspiring them to take action to help elevate care. Dietitian Melissa Hooper also joins the discussion to talk about the importance of nutrition in slowing the progression of disease and improving the quality of life of people with ALS. Since people with ALS maintain their cognitive ability throughout disease progression, knowing what's to come and what's happening can impact mental well-being. So, Kathryn Walker, CEO, MSN-Anesthesia, MSN-Psychiatry, at mental wellness treatment centers, Rivatalist, adds to the conversation with available options to improve mental health.
"Depression and anxiety are not signs of being weak. They are actually signs of a person being too strong for too long." Depression can be a paralyzing feeling in which a person loses interest in things he once enjoyed. It can impede someone's capacity to work, create relationships, or enjoy the quality of life. Sometimes, it can lead to a worse situation, such as paranoia or death. Unfortunately, depression and anxiety can be experienced even by someone who seems to have a perfect life. For instance, military, first responders, and even athletes can be prone to depression. Research has proven that veterans and first responders are more likely to develop depression due to repeated exposure to traumatic experiences in their jobs. Despite widespread awareness of the issue, only a few people are getting it fixed. We must know how depression can affect a person's well-being and learn to validate the internal feelings that cause the wars inside them. Kathryn Walker is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and Revitalist Lifestyle and Wellness CEO. She is a Tennessee native that has always been involved in advanced studies and skills. Kathryn is passionate about helping others with evidence-based science and practices. Her nursing background and training have exposed her to many different types of patients and given her an excellent opportunity to work as an active team member of the client's medical and mental health team. She hopes to help others by bringing top-rated therapies and interventions to patients, allowing them to live a higher quality of life. In this special episode with Kathryn Walker, we'll learn about the vision that propelled her toward manifesting her passion for helping the underserved community. She will show us that depression is real and that people like veterans, first responders, and even athletes are prone to experience it. In addition, we will learn that being cognizant of its effects will lead us to recognize and respond to someone who may be fighting an internal battle with their past experiences. "I think athletes are not natural-born leaders, they're trained leaders, and they're trained in their specialty. But when they leave their sports, they think they're going out to nothing. They need to look at sports and all the skills that they acquired in that and transfer that over to their resume because they can have a huge positive significance to any company."-Kathryn Walker Topics Covered: (00:00:00) Introduction + Episode Snippet (00:00:13) Introducing our special guest, Kathryn Walker (00:00:30) Advertisement: Obtain financial freedom with passive income! But it was skills that made me a powerful provider." -Kathryn Walker "Why do you need to have as advanced skills as I have right before you die? Why not take the skill set that I have, and we put it up here at the front, and we intervene earlier, and we can break the cycle to where we do give these people 20,30,40 years more of their lifespan?" -Kathryn Walker "One thing I've learned with mental health and addiction-type qualities is that we keep separating the brain when we should be bringing the brain back in the middle and to look at the brain as a whole."-Kathryn Walker "I think ketamine is a very safe drug with a wide safety or therapeutic index. I think you have to understand the physiology of how it works in the brain. But then you also have to understand how to support that person as they do evolve because they're so used to living with such significant mental illness."-Kathryn Walker "We have protocols that people sign off on and ensure they meet all these criteria we want people to meet. We've learned that many providers won't refer because they're uneducated on it. So if they're uneducated, that's hindering care."-Kathryn Walker "We created the athletic certification so athletes would know how to speak to other athletes. Because I think athletes, first responders, and the military are trained in a very similar capacity. They're taught to speak to people in a straightforward way and bullet point."-Kathryn Walker "I think athletes are not natural-born leaders, they're trained leaders, and they're trained in their specialty. But when they leave their sports, they think they're going out to nothing. They need to look at sports and all the skills that they acquired in that and transfer that over to their curriculum vitae because they can have a huge positive significance to any company."-Kathryn Walker "We created it to help athletes and leaders in the athletic sector to understand how to speak to other athletes. And when is it the time to call in greater experts?"-Kathryn Walker "I remember tearing my bicep, but I didn't want to get out of the game. Because somebody's always waiting to take your position or so you can't give up until you're cracked."-Kathryn Walker "So if athletes are well trained on how to pick up these key signs of mental health, or when somebody is struggling or depressed, or addicted to something, we can save lives."-Dr. Derrick Burgess "When people transition out, whether they retire from being a first responder, or if they've been deployed, they return to the states and lose their unit. And when they lose their unit, that's isolation. There are only certain people they can talk about with the exposures that they've had to where you don't want to hurt their mental health."-Kathryn Walker "There are a lot of people doing awareness and advocacy, but there are not a lot of people that are treating."-Kathryn Walker "Revitalist helps to create that sense of a unit within the mental health space, within the United States where people feel part of something, even though their other unit has transitioned them out."-Kathryn Walker "Athletes are used to their environment changing and having to make decisions and have critical thinking skills. So, I think anyone who's been in a team sport needs to see their strength."-Kathryn Walker "How can we work in a team environment to become a leader and not walk in saying I'm a leader? We have to understand our team before we can lead them. And I think that's probably the best advice I'd give to an athlete if you've got to read your environment."-Kathryn Walker Connect with Kathryn Walker: Website: https://revitalist.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathryn-walker-33a868115/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/revitalistcorp YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYJI620qgEclHUJgvGRSTHA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/revitalistcorp/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RevitalistLifestyleandWellnessLtd Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. Description: Chronic physical illness can lead to depression and anxiety, resulting in a mental health crisis which can further jeopardize a patient's health. The Heart of Innovation hosts Kym McNicholas and Dr. John Phillips are joined by The Way To My Heart's Nurse Practitioner Kay Smith, legendary business and financial reporter Bambi Francisco (Founder and CEO of Vator.TV), and Revitalist (Mental wellness treatment center chain in six states including Tennessee and Kentucky) CEO Kathryn Walker to talk about the problem and innovative solutions to improve mental health in patients with chronic physical ailments. Today's show kicked off with a couple inspirational quotes by Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate the impact she's had on the world during her reign: “Everyone is our neighbour, no matter what race, creed, or colour.” “When peace comes, remember it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place.” Queen passed away this past week of what may have been a massive stroke, although upon publish of this article, cause of death had not been released to the public. Dr. Phillips commented on the prevalence of strokes in the elderly, and the importance of getting checked annually for one common cause, which is atrial fibrillation, an irregular and often rapid heart rate that can lead to blood clots. Now that the COVID-19 lockdown has lifted and hospital facilities are starting to operate again at a normal rate, it's important for everyone to C.H.A.T. with their doctor about vascular health, which means to ask their physician to check their Carotids, Heart, Abdomen (Aneurysm), and Toes (arteries and veins). The discussion on vascular health backed into the topic of the day, which is mental health and chronic physical illness. Bambi Francisco runs a content distribution network, Vator.TV, which includes regular salons on mental health. Her next event, “Future of Behavioral and Mental Health is October 26th where topics will include “Reinventing the doctor's role”, “Future of Clinics”, “Lifestyle” and more. The premise for the event as well as how she began her discussion on mental health, is that for at least a decade, about one out of five Americans suffered from some sort of mental disorder. In the case of depression, it's become almost an epidemic rom being a rare condition 50 years ago. Critics have argued the rise has a lot to do with pathologizing normal psychic and somatic behavior, meaning society's idea of normal often means never feeling sad or hopeless. Covid and policies around the lockdown that kept kids out of schools has contributed to the elevated levels of mental stress. But it's also weighed heavily on those with chronic illnesses. Kathryn Walker, CEO of Revitalist, who's also an ICU Nurse explains why chronic physical illnesses can impact mental well-being and how psychedelics such as ketamine are becoming more accepted as mainstream treatment. Nurse Practitioner Kay also discusses the importance o Virtual Reality in the treatment of mental health issues and Bambi Francisco highlights the rise in faith-based technologies to improve mental well-being. Diane, a patient with Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.), which is a chronic circulation issue, talks about the impact of P.A.D. on her mental state and how finding the right vascular specialist who uses advanced minimally invasive tools and techniques can make all the difference in the world in not only providing pain relief, but also restoring hope, her mental state, as well as her love life.

She's open to being taught and learning from others. Healthcare workers are not the best business people because they're linear. There's a steep learning curve. Kathryn is an advocate for bringing in healthcare experts to find success as an entrepreneur and practice owner. National organizations, state boards, and legal professionals are all complimentary services with specific roles to support and protect you. Initially, Kathryn started with a 50/50 partner. It was stressful yet helpful to bounce ideas off of each other. When it comes to a partnership, find someone you trust and who understands your mission and vision. As a ketamine clinic owner, you take on the problems of running the business and you take on people who feel like they're failing in life. You'll get patients who aren't nice and you'll get transference. Keep it simple, recognize you're there to help and prioritize. Make sure your patients are safe and they're heard. As soon as Kathryn opened her practice, she offered ketamine and vitamin infusions. She also offers therapy and has seen patients improve immensely over time. In August 2021, she began working with a public market partner. It's been a very tedious process. Now, she's focused on running a business and trying to make her investors happy. Revitalist is listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange. It's strict yet more friendly to small businesses than the Nasdaq. Her future plans include getting the best people. She currently has an R&D division with 18 projects. Her goal is to have 150 US clinics by 2025. 3 Key Points: Provide health services based on the need. Keep things simple and safe for patients and providers. Kathryn is focused on adding service lines to help communities grow through increased access, education, awareness, and safety. She wants to infiltrate the entire healthcare system and bring about necessary change. Build a team with value, trust, and learn from each other to provide better healthcare. Tweetable Quotes: “You're sacrificing to better help this person who's probably in some of the darkest, deepest times of their life.” - Kathryn Walker “We're just trying to attract the best and push as aggressively as we can in a very safe and empowering way.” - Kathryn Walker Resources: Kathryn's website: https://revitalist.com/ Free masterclass on Starting a Ketamine Infusion Clinic: https://www.ketamineacademy.com/presentation Have a healthcare business question?
