Long before the National Park Service was founded, the U.S. Army was put in charge of protecting America's national parks. One of the groups that played a crucial role in fulfilling this invaluable service to our country was the Buffalo Soldiers: African American officers and enlisted men serving in the Army. When the regimen stationed in San Francisco was tasked with protecting and developing infrastructure in Sequoia and General Grant (now Kings Canyon) National Parks, these incredibly hardworking soldiers made jaw-dropping progress in their first season of duty. Led by the infamous Captain Charles Young, who was later posthumously promoted to Brigadier General, this group of approximately one hundred men set out to guard and improve these priceless areas. They built roads into the parks and protected the land from poachers and trespassers, making it possible for future generations of visitors to these national treasures. In this episode, we discuss the accomplishments of the Buffalo Soldiers, not just in these two parks but also in Yosemite and the surrounding public lands. --- The best way to support our podcast is to become a member of our Patreon account. Dive into the remarkable journey of Rosalie Barrow Edge, a trailblazer in the realm of wildlife conservation, on this enlightening episode of the Aptitude Outdoors podcast. Born into a prominent New York City family, Edge's activism initially focused on the suffrage movement, contributing significantly to the passage of the 19th Amendment. However, her path took a pivotal turn towards environmental conservation upon discovering the alarming decline of hawks and eagles, coupled with the ineffectiveness of existing conservation establishments. Rosalie Barrow Edge's legacy is profoundly marked by her founding of the world's first preserve for birds of prey, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, and her instrumental role in establishing national parks and conservation movements. Her journey began with a pamphlet in 1929, revealing the neglect for the protection of many species, including the bald eagle, by organizations tied to gun and ammunition makers. This revelation spurred Edge to challenge established conservation groups and advocate for stricter protection measures for birds and wildlife. Through the Emergency Conservation Committee (ECC), which she founded, Edge led campaigns that not only created Hawk Mountain Sanctuary but also played a crucial role in the creation of Olympic National Park in 1938 and Kings Canyon National Park in 1940. Her efforts extended to lobbying Congress to preserve thousands of acres of old-growth forest around Yosemite National Park, showcasing her commitment to preserving natural habitats. Rosalie Barrow Edge's work has had a lasting impact on the conservation movement, influencing the founding of major environmental organizations and shifting the focus of wildlife conservation towards a more inclusive and scientifically grounded approach. Her life and work stand as a testament to the power of individual action in the face of environmental challenges, reminding us that passion coupled with action can lead to profound environmental change. This podcast explores the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, Conservation Success Stories, Birds and Nature, and the indomitable spirit of Rosalie Barrow Edge, a pioneer among females in wildlife conservation. Join us as we celebrate her contributions and continue the vital work of preserving our planet's irreplaceable biodiversity. In Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, park managers are considering replanting sequoias in wilderness to restore the groves after severe fires they say humans caused. But some environmentalists say this goes against the very definition of wilderness. The debate raises questions about how we think about wilderness in a changing planet.
On July 5th, 2014, Greg Hines set out to do a solitary climb up the remote Mt Goddard in Kings Canyon National Park. He'd planned on taking three to four days to complete the climb. He successfully made it up to the top, but during descent made a simple decision that would change the course of his trip and his life, leaving Greg with a serious injury on a rocky steep slope. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kaycee-mcintosh/support

The Most Massive TreesBeing dwarfed by Earth's most massive tree, the giant sequoia, fills you with wonder. It's hard to believe that a living thing can be so enormous and old. Also known as Sierra redwoods, the largest of these trees live in California's rugged Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some of the largest surviving giant sequoia groves can be seen in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and can live to be 3,000 years old!Giant sequoias grow so large because they live a very long time and grow quickly. To thrive, giant sequoias require a great amount of water, primarily from the Sierra snowpack that accumulates over the winter months and soaks into the ground when it melts.Giant sequoias are generally well able to protect themselves against their natural threats, allowing them to survive for thousands of years. They are too massive to be blown over in the wind, and their bark is thick and rich in tannins, which protect them against fire and insect damage. Fire is an important element of the giant sequoia forest. Sequoia seedlings need nutrient-rich soil, lots of sunlight, and an area free of competition from other plants to thrive. Periodic wildfires help to produce all of these conditions and are therefore very beneficial to the reproduction of sequoia trees. You will find the full transcript at https://interspanish.buzzsprout.comAs always, I really appreciate your thoughts and feedback about the show. Have you ever wondered what it was like to witness your own death? Your friends, siblings, parents – even your wife – have moved on. Accepted you as dead. There may have not been a body – but you went missing, deep in the Sierra Nevadas. But what if you survived? After weeks on end, alone and on the brink of starvation – you make it, returning home as a hero. Only to find the world you left behind is much different. Then, the same arms that welcomed you home as a hero push you away, and question your entire story. This nightmare was very real for Lieutenant David Steeves, who went missing in Kings Canyon National Park, returned from the grave and had his miraculous story of survival doubted – for the rest of his life. We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back.
