Flanigan's Eco-Logic
Steve Lewis on Rebuilding Community after the Eaton Fire

Flanigan's Eco-Logic

Flanigan's Eco-Logic features Steve Lewis for the third time... this time delving into his own deeply disturbing experience, as his neighborhood was ravaged by the Eaton Fire in early January. It wiped out much of his home town of Alta Dena, California... killing 17 people and destroying some 9,000 homes and business properties. There were heavy winds that day and he saw the fire coming, working its way down the mountainside visible from his upstairs windows. Time to evacuate.Steve's home was miraculously spared even though fires licked up the fences on either side of his property and the base of his front yard tree charred. He recounts that home after home were decimated by fire; households and generations of Alta Dena residents disrupted in a city-wide bonfire fueled by channels of 100+ mile per hour winds.Since the fire, Steve explains how he has been focused on working with others to rebuild the community, not just its built environment, but its culture. Alta Dena has been one of Los Angeles's most unique communities, diverse in professions and income and race. It is known for its black community and its rich sense of place. Working with others, Steve is rebuilding Alta Dena's pride. He is working on designs of public spaces and collaborating with others to enhance its commercial corridors. He and others are helping to maintain and bring back architectural styles, developing blueprints that feature Alta Dena's heritage, and that are poised for streamlined permitting.Ted and Steve talk about the cause of the fires, how each of us is responsible for climate change and how we can make our homes more resilient to fire. Steve shares his optimism that lessons can be learned, that the community can be reborn from the ashes of the Eaton Fire, a calamity of epic proportions.

In this – the 150th! - episode of the A is for Architecture Podcast, I was joined by cultural theorist Justin O'Connor, Professor of Cultural Economy at the University of South Australia to discuss his 2024 book, Culture is not an Industry: Reclaiming Art and Culture for the Common Good, published by Manchester University Press.Unpacking and critiquing the concept of creative industries, Justin describes the historical transformation of urban space through local cultural initiatives and grassroots movements of makers, doers and thinkers, and contrasts this with the current dominance of large development companies and platform capitalism, re-packaged by governmental sleight of hand. The effects of this is another form of gentrification through which makers of actual culture are sidelined (again). Justin goes beyond this critique, however, advocating for an alternative economy based on an holistic approach to culture viewed as a social good, which might allow us to foster flourishing societies beyond the death-grip of economic metrics. It's a good, sharp episode, and Justin's argument is well worth your time. Have a sticky, find out.Justin can be found on his personal website, on LinkedIn and at his place of work. The event was a powerful reminder of the significance of community, culture, and environment in personal and professional growth. Patrick and Steffanya emphasize the importance of surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals who inspire and support each other, especially in challenging economic times. Patrick highlights how the conference brought together both old and new members of the real estate investing community, creating a space for collaboration and shared learning. He appreciates the efforts of the organizers and acknowledges the presence of key figures like Michael Ponte, Wayne Hillier, Gabby, and Alfonso Quadra, who contributed to the event's success. Steffany shares her gratitude for reconnecting with long-time community members and seeing the collective resilience and commitment to growth despite current uncertainties. The discussion pivots to the concept of "borrowed confidence" and how being part of a supportive community can help individuals stay focused and motivated. Steffany draws parallels between the culture in real estate and her experience working with professional sports teams, emphasizing the role of community and environment in achieving success. The episode underscores the idea that real growth happens when individuals step out of their comfort zones and engage in real-life interactions. While virtual platforms offer convenience, Patrick and Steffany stress the irreplaceable value of face-to-face connections and the energy that comes from being physically present in a supportive environment. They encourage listeners to seek out communities that foster authentic connections and provide a safe space for growth, whether in real estate or any other field. The episode wraps up with an invitation to stay tuned for a live podcast recording and a reminder to keep pushing forward, one step at a time, in pursuit of their goals.

Top Takeaways [3:00] It was a family affair from the beginning for Mike and his brother Matt - and with a little persistence provided by their mom, they found themselves in a new world of hospitality.  [6:30] How the narrative changed and created what would become Life & Times - certainly not a traditional company by the books, but one that is ingrained in every aspect of the community.  [8:25] The history of Pioneertown - built in 1946 by the likes of Hollywood actors, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, as a working movie set to film all of the iconic Western films - transpired into a community of creatives living and working in the film industry.  [12:00] The common thread woven throughout Life & Times is an “exercise in looking into the past, finding these special moments in history, trying to evoke the best of those moments and those feelings and those eras for each venue.” [14:20] Life & Times and other locals alike are breathing new life into the High Desert with cherished culinary classics, a reimagined release of the original Pioneertown Gazette, and the historic Post Office acting as a curated shop of local makers, artisans and brands.  [24:10] Why Captain Whidbey on Whidbey Island, just outside of Seattle, Washington, is “the gateway to beautiful and rugged wild, fostering a sense of romance, a longing for adventure and a communion with the natural world.”  [25:35] Expect to Dine In Good Company with freshly caught mussels right from within view of The Restaurant while you sip on local Washington wine.  [27:50] How a Japanese Onsen experience, seeing the reverence for bathing culture there, inspired Mike to bring more holistic wellness experiences to the future of Captain Whidbey, beginning with the conception of a spa.   Notable Mentions Pappy & Harriet's Joshua Tree National Park Red Dog Saloon The Copper Room La Copine Coupville, WA Ebey's Reserve Deception Pass The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway  Visit For Yourself Life & Times Website | @lifeandtimes.co Pioneertown Motel Website | @pioneertownmotel Captain Whidbey Website | @thecaptainwhidbey Stay In Good Company Website

In this special episode recorded live at SXSW EDU 2024, host Mike Palmer moderates a powerful panel on breaking down silos in education. Featuring multilingual learning consultant Dana Gastich-French, special education expert Dr. DeShanna Reed, and parent coach Punam Saxena, the conversation dives into the trifecta of community, culture, and collaboration. Learn how to be a link, while busting silos across the K12 ecosystem. The panelists, who first met serendipitously at the prior year's SXSW EDU, explore the problems caused by working in isolation and offer solutions for bridging disparate worlds. They advocate creating networked improvement communities, fostering authentic connections through presence and effective communication, and prioritizing the crucial work of humanizing diverse stakeholders. Punam stresses meeting parents where they are by providing vocabulary and support. DeShanna shares powerful stories of cultivating trust through home visits and communicating in families' native languages. Dana suggests stakeholder groups, documenting processes, empathy interviews to shape school culture, and valuing the "unsexy" moments that truly build community. With vulnerability, passion and decades of frontline experience, the panelists make a clarion call for a paradigm shift - moving away from inefficient siloing towards meaningful collaboration that embraces the strengths of students, teachers, parents and communities. An inspiring listen for any educator striving to create equitable, inclusive environments for all. Subscribe to Trending in Education wherever you get your podcasts. She knows how to be the CEO of her business, makes quick decisions on the fly, and is not afraid to try something new. She's also made huge strides with handing tasks over to her staff so she has time to be the true visionary.   Amy's team is supportive of her mission, and of her family, and is the core of her success. This week, Scott and Vince are joined by special guest, Khea Pollard. Khea is the CEO of Café X: By Any Beans Necessary, a Black, mother-daughter-owned, cooperative coffee shop built to support generational wealth building in the Black community and other marginalized communities. Khea shares the origins of the coffee shop and her passion for building community. Further, her "cooperative coffee shop" business model, has provided the sustained opportunity to create a strong culture of belongingness within her team, for the shop business itself, and for the communities it serves. While being a CEO is challenging enough, if you add another day job on top of that and you've got Khea's interesting and inspiring story. Through her job as a Director of Economic Mobility & Opportunity, she has helped several low-income groups in her community by providing them with resources and information regarding saving money. Khea's story will share her experience and shed light on how you too can become an effective and empathetic leader—whether you are starting out on that journey at a young age, as in Khea's case, or adjusting your leadership style later in life. So, press the play button & let's get started! RESOURCES:
