Carzaam Automotive News Episode 16: Pony AI - Nissan Switch - Uber Driverless car startup Pony.ai raises $462 million at a $3 billion valuation In a sign that investors’ still have enthusiasm for driverless cars, Pony AI has secured $462m in fresh funding, including $400m from Toyota. The capital infusion brings the startup’s total raised amount to about $800m at a valuation north of $3bn. After this round, Pony.ai is the second-most valuable independent autonomous driving company in the world now positioning themselves as a global autonomous driving company, now located in both the U.S. and China. Pony.ai and Toyota last year announced a partnership to explore driverless mobility services across a range of segments and industries, and this new financing cements and expands that existing relationship. Switching it up: Nissan launches subscription service in the U.S. A future where roads are dominated by vehicle fleets is one step closer after the launch of Switch, an entry-level subscription car service by Nissan. Subscription plans, which start at $699 per month plus a $495 one-time fee, provide subscribers with a vehicle rented for a maximum of 180 days, or 3,200 km–whichever is first. Four vehicles are offered under the basic plan including the Altima, Frontier, Pathfinder and Rogue. A $900-per-month premium membership also gives subscribers access to more vehicle models including the 370Z, Armada, Leaf Plus, Maxima, Murano and Titan. For an additional $100-per-day, premium members may also rent a GT-R but this is capped at a maximum period of one week. Uber Inks Deal With Adomni to Put Ad Displays Atop Vehicles Uber has signed a deal with ad-tech company Adomni to introduce ad displays on top of a thousand vehicles in three cities by April 1. While individual Uber drivers could previously install ad displays on top of their vehicles from third-party operators like Firefly, this agreement marks the first time Uber has rolled out a company-sponsored ad platform of its own. Uber and Uber Eats drivers in Atlanta, Dallas, Texas, and Phoenix will be compensated to participate in the pilot program, which will launch with commercial advertisements on April 1. Show #652   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 25th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW'S FACTORY RACE TEAMS WILL EXCLUSIVELY DRIVE ELECTRIC CARS "Volkswagen may have a long way to go before its road-going cars are all-electric, but its racing division doesn't have to wait that long. The German brand has revealed that its motorsport group will drop "factory-backed commitments" to race cars with combustion engines -- it's either electric or nothing." reports engadget: "It's also comparatively easier for VW to pull out of gas-powered racing given its level of investment. VW's motorsport wing is best known for its rally cars, touring cars and not much else. A shift to EVs might be considerably harder for rivals like Mercedes that have deep investments in competitions like Formula 1. For that matter, VW itself still has strong commitments to gas-based racing through Audi and Porsche. This isn't as wholesale a switch as VW implies."   https://www.engadget.com/2019/11/25/vw-motorsport-drops-gas-cars   LOTUS EVIJA ELECTRIC SUPERCAR ON THE MOVE FOR THE FIRST TIME "With Geely planning to put Lotus back where it belongs on the sports car map, there are a lot of reasons to get excited about what the masterminds in Norfolk are cooking up. " writes Motor1.com: "the Evija will go into production next year as the flagship of the rejuvenated British brand. The fully electric supercar made its debut in mid-July, and now it’s time to see it in action during some brief high-speed testing on a private test track. We’re looking at the second engineering prototype built by Lotus likely stretching its legs on the Top Gear track at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey by the looks of it. Only 130 production cars are going to be built, and Lotus says comprehensive validation and initial build process is well underway. It’s targeting an output of 1,973 horsepower thanks to quad electric motors enabling a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than three seconds, with another three seconds needed to reach 124 mph (200 km/h)."   https://www.motor1.com/news/383808/lotus-evija-on-the-move/   THE C8 CORVETTE ZR1 WILL BE HYBRID AND MAKE 900 HP: REPORT "We first heard this rumor over a year ago now, but a new report says it’s been confirmed that the hottest version of the new mid-engine Corvette will be hybrid, boosting its output to 900 HP." according to Jalopnik: "The electric system will apparently be mated with a twin-turbo V8, the engine that reportedly will power the Z06"   And as per MotorTrend: "Now, we can report from an even higher-placed source that the range-topping C8 Corvette ZR1 will add a performance hybrid system to boost it to 900 hp. Rumors of a hybridized C8 have been flowing for quite some time, but now we have exclusive confirmation from a senior official at GM. The ZR1 will build on the Z06's all-new engine with a performance- (not fuel economy-) oriented hybrid system to fill in torque gaps and increase total output to an even 900 hp."   https://jalopnik.com/the-c8-corvette-zr1-will-be-hybrid-and-make-900-hp-rep-1840013799   VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER IS THE ID CROZZ CONCEPT, EVOLVED "As the Volkswagen ID Crozz concept has evolved over time, we’ve gotten a better idea of how the company’s first dedicated EV (e-Golf being a variant of an internal-combustion vehicle) for the U.S. market is shaping up. In short, these new spy shots answer that question thusly: shapely!" says Autoblog: "The ID.4, as we have called it in recent spy shots, is seen here with far less camouflage than we’ve seen in the past. Despite some flourishes that make it look a bit like an Opel, the overall effect is extremely attractive. While it’s subjective, what we’re seeing here is perhaps the best-looking of the ID variants, concept or no. Like all ID variants, it’ll use a version of Volkswagen’s MEB electric architecture. The concept version, the ID Crozz, featured a dual-motor setup and a projected 250-mile max range from an 83-kWh battery. Those specs seem appropriate for a production version, although things may change between now and then."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/25/vw-id4-crozz-spy-shots   NEW NISSAN LEAF CUSTOMERS TO GET PRE-PAID CHARGING ACCESS TO EVGO’S CHARGING NETWORK Nissan and EVgo announced today that they are providing new Nissan LEAF owners and lessees access to EVgo’s U.S. charging network through a new program, “Nissan Energy Perks by EVgo.”   Nissan Energy Perks by EVgo is a new platform designed to encourage more U.S. drivers to make the switch to an electric vehicle. Nissan will provide $250 of pre-paid charging credits with EVgo – the nation’s largest and most reliable public EV fast charging network3 – to qualifying retail customers who lease or purchase a new Nissan LEAF or LEAF PLUS in participating markets on or after November 1, 2019. The program will provide participating retail customers with access to EVgo’s network of more than 750 public charging station locations with more than 1,200 fast chargers, as well as charging on other networks accessible through cooperative roaming agreements. As a result, new Nissan LEAF and LEAF PLUS owners and lessees will have access to more than 30,000 public EV chargers, the largest of any U.S. partnership.   ELON MUSK HINTS AT MAKING SMALLER VERSION OF THE ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK "Elon Musk is hinting at Tesla making a smaller version of the Cybertruck electric pickup truck in the future. He didn’t explain how they would make it smaller." reports electrek: "esla never confirmed the dimensions of the Cybertruck, but Musk said on stage that it is roughly the same size as the Ford F150. Now on Twitter, Musk says that long term, Tesla could make a smaller version of the Cybertruck. Those smaller vehicles are often referred to as “small” or “mid-size” pickup trucks, and they often feature a smaller bed (4′ feet to 5 feet) and/or a smaller cabin — generally still seating five, but with much less room in the back."   https://www.electrek.co/2019/11/25/tesla-cybertruck-elon-musk-hints-smaller-electric-pickup-truck/   PANASONIC WILL NOT BUILD NEW BATTERY FACTORY FOR TESLA IN CHINA "According to CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga, Panasonic is not currently planning a new battery cell factory for Tesla in China. Officially, however, it remains open whether Tesla will rely on another manufacturer for the Shanghai plant or imported battery cells from Gigafactory 1." writes electrive today: "According to Reuters, Tsuga’s current statements reflect Panasonic’s growing caution towards Tesla. The joint battery business of Panasonic and Tesla does not yet have sustainable profits. Tsuga admitted earlier this year that it underestimated the risks associated with Tesla."   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   "The controversial, and botched, Cybertruck launch is now the most-Googled search term in the companies history. But did it help or hinder the wider movement to EVs?”   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #485   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 28th May 2019. HONDA E TO GET SIDE CAMERA MIRROR SYSTEM AS STANDARD "The new Honda E electric vehicle will be fitted with cameras instead of door mirrors on every variant, the Japanese manufacturer has confirmed. First revealed to the world in September 2017 as the Urban EV Concept, the E is a rear-wheel-drive electric hatchback designed to compete with the Renault Zoe. Unlike the Zoe, however, the brand new Honda will get retro styling and a high-tech cabin, as well as cutting-edge mirror technology." reports Motor1.com: "The so-called "Side Camera Mirror System" is similar to the virtual door mirrors seen on top-of-the-range versions of Audi’s new E-Tron electric SUV, and uses rear-facing cameras and small screens in the cabin to show drivers the view down the car’s flanks. In the case of the Honda, the cameras sit in housings just below the window line, with their images fed back to six-inch screens at either end of the dashboard. And the advantages don’t stop there. Honda also notes that the cameras are more aerodynamic than conventional mirrors, improving the car’s efficiency and range. And there are safety advantages, too, with a choice of "normal" or "wide" views available for the driver to select. The wide view is said to reduce blind spots by half, while even normal view provides a 10-percent improvement. Honda is also planning to integrate the reversing camera system with the mirrors, projecting guidelines on to the six-inch displays to help drivers maneuver. And to prevent the cameras becoming clouded by water or dirt, they will have specially designed housings that stop water droplets appearing on the lens, which will also feature a water-repellent coating."   https://www.motor1.com/news/351805/honda-e-side-cameras-standard/   NISSAN REVS UP EMOTION IN LATEST LEAF CAMPAIGN "Nissan North America is switching gears to convey the emotional experience of driving its Leaf Plus long-range electric car, rather than leaning too heavily on the vehicle's specs, in a new campaign featuring a driver who can fly through the air." says the industry website AdAge: "The campaign is the first featuring the Leaf Plus, which debuted at CES in January and began hitting showrooms in recent weeks. Since the Nissan Leaf launched in 2010, much of the marketing has focused on its features. As the Leaf continues its reign as the top-selling electric vehicle to date, despite sagging sales early this year and competition from the likes of Tesla, it is shifting to more of a storytelling approach. Short customer testimonial videos highlighting the vehicle’s features, such as one-pedal driving and driver assistance technology, are slated to post on social media."   https://adage.com/article/cmo-strategy/nissan-revs-emotion-latest-leaf-campaign/2174271   NIO POSTPONES ITS ELECTRIC SEDAN "Chinese EV startup NIO has indefinitely delayed its upcoming electric sedan just six weeks after unveiling a concept version of the car at the Shanghai Auto Show" report The Verge website: "The news comes as the startup released unaudited financial results for the first quarter of 2019, which show NIO lost $390 million as deliveries of its ES8 electric SUV dropped to 3,989 (down from 7,980 during the fourth quarter of 2018).' NIO had not previously set a ship date for the sedan, known as the ET7, but the company’s founder and CEO William Li said it is postponed during an investor call on Tuesday."   https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/28/18642571/nio-delay-et7-sedan-first-quarter-new-vehicle   US’S FIRST ZERO-EMISSION, ELECTRIC FERRY STARTS OPERATIONS "After being converted at the Master Marine shipyard in Bayou la Batre, Alabama, Gee’s Bend ferry has now returned to service being US’s first zero-emission, electric-powered passenger/car ferry. The boat will operate with less emissions, lower noise and reduced operating costs." according to safety4sea.com: "The 15-vehicle and 132-passenger ferry operates on the Alabama River between Camden and Boykin, Alabama"   https://safety4sea.com/uss-first-zero-emission-electric-ferry-starts-operations/   CENTRICA LAUNCHES BUSINESS EV PACKAGE "Centrica has launched a new electric vehicle (EV) service designed to help businesses in the transition towards electrifying their fleet." says Utility Week: "Companies will be offered solar panels and batteries to allow them to meet the additional power demands of new charging points. Moreover, customers will be able to integrate their EV chargers with existing energy infrastructure and access local energy management services to ensure they are managing their growing fleet in the smartest, most efficient way. Research carried out by Centrica has shown that more than 75 per cent of businesses are planning to introduce EVs into their fleets. However, over half (57 per cent) of these businesses have not considered the implications of what that could mean in terms of their energy demand."   https://utilityweek.co.uk/centrica-launches-ev-package-businesses/   SPIED: MINI COOPER S E CAUGHT TESTING IN THE WILD "This MINI Cooper S E, spotted being staged for an official photo shoot, gives us a completely undisguised look at the BMW subsidiary's first true entry into the all-electric market" reports Left Lane News: "The heart of it is a ~34-kWh battery pack, and according to early reports, MINI expects it to deliver roughly the same range as the BMW i3 somewhere in the neighborhood of 110-115 miles. That all said, the MINI promises to deliver one thing most compact EVs aren't really intended to: driving fun. At 3,000 pounds, it's not going to be quite as nimble as the gasoline-powered Cooper S Hardtop, but the S E should at least be able to hang with the heavier convertible."   https://leftlanenews.com/mini/spied-mini-cooper-s-e-caught-testing-in-the-wild/   NEW VW ID3 ELECTRIC HATCHBACK PROTOTYPES SPOTTED "Volkswagen is working to bring to market the VW ID3 electric hatchback as their first mass-market next-gen electric car and now new prototypes have been spotted in the wild."says Electrek: "With the launch of the pre-orders, VW released images of a new prototype with a weird camouflage. Furthermore, different ID3 electric hatchback prototypes with a more traditional camouflage were spotted at the Ionity charging station in Euro-Rastpark Hohenwarsleben in Saxony-Anhalt (pictures by Michael Roth via emobly): "nterestingly, the prorotypes appear to have been camouflaged to look like Nissan vehicles with the Japanese automaker’s signature grille. Otherwise, the camouflaged vehicles reveal the overall design of the ID3."   https://electrek.co/2019/05/28/vw-id3-electric-hatchback-prototypes-spotted/   WORLD'S LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATION IS IN SHENZHEN "The largest electric vehicle (EV) charging station in the world is reportedly now situated in our very own Shenzhen, according to Sina Auto. This past week, 172 fast chargers were added by Chinese power company Southern Power Grid in collaboration with BYD and Potevio - rounding out to a total of 637 fast chargers at Minle EV Charging Station in Longhua district." writes thatsmags.com: "One Chinese industries and commodities researcher tweeted that the station is able to service almost 5,000 vehicles per day, using a total of 160-megawatt hours of energy on average. Additionally, 70 of the newly constructed charging poles use 60-kilowatt constant power charging modules which can accommodate any type of electric car model."   http://www.thatsmags.com/china/post/28068/world-s-largest-electric-vehicle-charging-station-is-in-shenzhen   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #461   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 2nd May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC WITH UPGRADED 38.3-KWH BATTERY "The new Hyundai IONIQ family is finally unveiled with updated hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions. Let’s see some highlights about the one that matters, the electric. I really like the new Hyundai IONIQ Electric and I think that more range with a lower charging rate at DC fast chargers is a good trade-off, especially considering that the on-board charger was upgraded. Higher range gives us more freedom to avoid expensive and overcrowded DC fast chargers and charge at home – where charging is more convenient and a lot cheaper." says Pedro at PushEVs.   "The new IONIQ Electric’s battery has been upgraded from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh, meaning drivers can go even further between charges. It boasts 36% additional energy storage capacity, offering a total of 294 kms of range (internal target under WLTP regulations). Its e-motor delivers a maximum power of 136 PS and 295 Nm of torque and is fitted standard with a 7.2-kW on-board charger – an upgrade from current 6.6-kW – for Type 2 AC charging. Using a 100-kW fast-charging station, the battery can reach 80% charge in as little as 54 minutes. As well as the new convenience features, the new IONIQ’s reimagined interior incorporates new design factors to enhance its sophisticated image. In addition to standard black seat trims, customers have the option of four leather seat colours: Black, Gray two-tone, Red Umber (exclusive for hybrid and plug-in) and Electric Shadow (exclusive to electric version). Meanwhile, the dashboard garnish arrives in Dark Chrome Accent."   "The new IONIQ’s leading safety package includes Front Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection with new Cyclist Detection ability and Driver Attention Warning. Lane Keeping Assist and High Beam Assist also come standard. Optionally available as well are Lane Following Assist which keeps the car in the middle of a lane so drivers can navigate safely even in heavy traffic during rush hour, and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning that uses the front camera and information from the navigation system to identify road speed signs and displays the speed limit and no-passing signs in real time. Using the radar sensor to detect the distance from the car in front, Smart Cruise Control with Stop&Go and Leading Vehicle Departure Alert maintains a preset distance to automatically stop and depart again according to traffic conditions. Additional options include Blind-Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning. Taking a cue from its similarly innovative Kona Electric sibling, as a maximum use of regenerative braking technology, the new IONIQ Electric adopts 1-pedal driving capability, which allows drivers to stop the car by simply holding onto the left paddle shift lever with often no need to engage the braking pedal. Working thus via Smart Regenerative Braking, the level of energy recuperation is automatically adjusted depending on the road incline and traffic situation in front when coasting. The new IONIQ Electric also features Eco+, which supplements the standard Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes. By selecting the Eco+ mode, drivers reduce their energy consumption and the car’s remaining energy can be extended during unforeseeable emergency situations."   https://pushevs.com/2019/05/02/new-hyundai-ioniq-family/   TESLA IS NOT ALLOWING RANGE UPGRADE ON NEW 150 KM MODEL 3 IN CANADA "Tesla launched a new, cheaper Model 3 with 150km range in Canada to get access to the new $5,000 federal incentive, but we’re now learning that the company is not offering any range upgrade on that new version of the Model 3 — effectively making the vehicle unsellable." says Fred at Electrek.   “To be eligible for incentives, a vehicle must have a base-model manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000 for passenger vehicles with six or fewer seats, and less than $55,000 for vehicles with seven or more seats. For eligible vehicles with six or fewer seats, higher priced versions (trims) are eligible as long as the final manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $55,000 or less.”   "It disqualified Tesla’s vehicles from being eligible to the incentive because the base Model 3, which is only available as an “off-the-menu item”, starts at $47,000. In response earlier this week, Tesla has lowered the price of the vehicle to $44,999 in Canada, but it also software-locked the vehicle to only 150 km (93 miles) of range. Tesla has done that in the past, but the automaker offered to unlock the range as an option for a cost similar to the original cost before the range decrease. Buyers in Canada reached out to us saying that Tesla salespeople were saying that they were not aware of any such upgrade in this case. We contacted a Tesla spokesperson about the situation and the automaker confirmed that they are not offering any range upgrade through a software update for the base version at $45,000."   https://electrek.co/2019/05/02/tesla-model-3-range-upgrade-canada/   TESLA SEEKS CAPITAL RAISE OF OVER $2 BILLION "Tesla Inc will raise up to $2.3 billion in new capital, renouncing what Elon Musk called a “Spartan diet” and easing Wall Street concerns about the money-losing company’s ability to overcome a drop in sales and build new product lines." reports Reuters: "Before Tesla’s announcement on Thursday, however, analysts speculating about a capital raise had cautioned that the company had missed optimal timing - last year’s third quarter, when the company posted a profit. Tesla has reported four profitable quarters since it went public in June 2010."   "Tesla needs some $2 billion of additional capital to finance its expansions after the huge $700 million in losses in the first quarter. Funds will be raised in two ways: issues of new shares - up to $650 million (+15% option for underwriters) issues of new debt - up to $1,350 million (+ 15% option for underwriters) Total up to $2 billion ($2.3 billion including 15% option for underwriters)"   "Tesla has 2.2 billion of cash and equivalent, which is great but not enough to continue rapid expansion. Besides the new Gigafactory 3 in China, the company needs to launch the Model Y and more products after that. Capital expenditures plan is:   2019: $2-2.5 billion 2020: $2.5-3 billion 2021: $2.5-3 billion"   THE E-GOLF. ZERO EMISSION AND NOW 0% PCP "Volkswagen’s e-Golf is now available, for a limited period only, with 0% PCP Finance, making this car more affordable and more accessible than ever before. Plus, customers wishing to move into the new Volkswagen ID. will be able to do so easily, thanks to a special new 2-year PCP solution." reports The Avondhu: "The e-Golf starts from €35,995 after Government incentives and now with 0% PCP starts from as little as €349 per month. The e-Golf Executive Edition offers the ‘ultimate e-Golf’ and costs from €39,495 or with 0% PCP from as little as €379 per month."   https://avondhupress.ie/the-e-golf-zero-emission-and-now-0-pcp/   NISSAN BUMPS UP LEAF BASE PRICE IN UK "Despite competing in a tough new car market, Nissan thinks it deserves to give its still-fresh Leaf a price hike in the UK. A Nissan official told Autocar this week the price change is due to, "market demands and other influences, such as inflation and cost base." Considering the company's Sunderland plant supplies the Leaf to the UK and surrounding countries, those "other influences" sound like they could be related to uncertainty of Britain's exit from the European Union – and uncertainty as to how long the " according to Za at InsideEVs.com: "The Leaf's base price jumps to £27,995, up £1,805, even after the government subsidy of £3,500. That's in a class that includes the likes of the Volkswagen e-Golf and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, and it's for the base model rated at 168 miles of range in the UK. However, the Leaf e+ (Leaf Plus in the U.S.) is now in full production for the UK and boasts much more standard equipment and 239 miles of range, which is more competitive with the likes of the Kia e-Niro."   WILLIAMS ADVANCED ENGINEERING TO DESIGN AND SUPPLY BESPOKE BATTERIES FOR EXTREME E Extreme E announced Wednesday a new partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, to supply batteries for the newly-launched electric SUV off-road racing series – set to commence on its first voyage in January 2021. The batteries will be specially-designed and developed by Williams, plugging into the expertise and experience of the same minds who assembled the batteries and cells for the first four seasons of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Made to withstand extreme environments, conditions and terrains, the batteries will be compatible with Formula E-specification motors and produce a maximum power output of 470 kW (equivalent to approx. 630 bhp). Williams will put batteries into production, ready to provide teams with identical 54 kWh battery packs – to be used in the first two seasons of Extreme E.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TOYOTA AND SUZUKI PARTNER ON HYBRIDS AND EVS Toyota and Suzuki on Wednesday said they planned to produce electric vehicles and compact cars for each other to better compete with fast-changing technologies in the global auto industry." According to Reuters today: "Suzuki will source gasoline hybrid systems for cars it sells worldwide from Toyota, which pioneered hybrid vehicles with the Prius more than 20 years ago, the companies said in a joint statement. The deepening partnership between the two automakers will enable cost-conscious Suzuki to tap into Toyota's R&D firepower to develop lower-emission vehicles and self-driving cars — areas which Suzuki has admitted it is struggling to keep up. The two automakers will deepen their cooperation in India, where Suzuki's hybrid vehicles will be made using engines and batteries locally produced by Toyota. They will also join forces in Europe, where Toyota will produce electric vehicles based on its RAV4 SUV crossover and Corolla wagon for Suzuki, while Suzuki will supply Toyota with gasoline engines for compact vehicle models sold in the region."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/20/toyota-suzuki-partner-on-hybrids-evs-building-cars-for-each-o/   HONDA LOGS 15,000 REGISTRATIONS OF INTEREST FOR ELECTRIC E PROTOTYPE "Earlier this month, Honda revealed that so far it received 15,000 registrations of interest for the Honda e Prototype. As the number comes from March 5, we guess it could be significantly higher after the Geneva Motor Show." reports InsideEVs.com today: "If the price is significantly higher than average for its subcompact segment (because of the premium interior and battery cost), we would not expect too high of a volume – especially in late 2019. For comparison, BMW is selling less than 37,000 i3 per year globally after a few years on the market and two range extensions.   co.uk, click Cars and then scroll down to Welcome To The Volt Age. "Say goodbye to the past. The next-generation electric car is coming. The new Honda e Prototype previews Honda’s new electric car, which will be available to reserve early in the summer 2019."   https://insideevs.com/honda-15000-honda-e-prototype/   HYUNDAI, KIA, OLA TO BUILD INDIA-SPECIFIC ELECTRIC VEHICLES "India-based Ola ― one of the world’s largest ride-hailing platforms ― announced a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group focused on smart mobility solutions and electric vehicle development. The agreement will see the Hyundai, Kia and Ola extensively collaborate on developing unique fleet and mobility solutions." "Hyundai Motor Group expects to accelerate its transition from a ‘car manufacturer’ into a ‘Smart Mobility Solutions Provider’, as the partnership’s initiatives will allow it to engage in all aspects across the entire mobility value chain ― including vehicle production, fleet operation and mobility services."   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/03/hyundai-kia-ola-to-build-india-specific-electric-vehicles/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER INSTALLS UK’S LARGEST WORK CHARGING STATION "Jaguar Land Rover Group has installed at its Gaydon engineering center the UK‘s largest smart charging station for employees. In total, 166 smart charging outlets – each 7 kW AC – are available and connected to the broader NewMotion charging network." Writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com today: "In the future, the facility will get even more charging stations in the visitors’ car park for guests. Jaguar Land Rover points out that EV owners, which are able to charge at work (only about 25% of all EV owners), on average are charging at work 40% of the time. At 7 kW, cars like Jaguar I-PACE can replenish up to 176 miles (283 km) of range within an eight-hour shift." JLR said: "The stations are cloud-connected and integrated with the NewMotion public charging network, so employees can charge at stations across Europe using a single card. Users can also monitor and track charging throughout the day with a smartphone app. The charge points will offer both financial and environmental benefits for PHEV and BEV drivers alike, while providing a convenient and sustainable solution for employees who can’t charge at home. Jaguar Land Rover sources 100 per cent renewable electricity – generated from natural resources including solar and wind energy – for its UK facilities, which will be used to power the infrastructure, providing carbon-free commuting to employees. Jaguar Land Rover’s electricity supply is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), meaning a proportion of EDF Energy’s renewable energy is ring-fenced for the company. In this case, the REGO scheme certifies that Jaguar Land Rover’s entire supply comes from renewable generation.”   https://insideevs.com/jaguar-land-rover-largest-work-charging-station/   TESLA MODEL 3 STANDARD RANGE VS. NISSAN LEAF PLUS: WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY Green Car Reports says: "With the long-awaited release of the base, $35,000 Tesla Model 3 and the more expensive, longer-range Nissan Leaf Plus both arriving this month, the two have now converged—and functionally have more in common than their reputations might suggest." They conclude: "Surprisingly, given Tesla’s reputation for selling high-performance, high-lux machines, Tesla's advantage here is in base cars. If you want all the handy extra features (other than extra range), you can get them for a lot less in the Nissan Leaf Plus SL—especially while Nissan retains its full federal tax credit for the next several months."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122172_tesla-model-3-standard-range-vs-nissan-leaf-plus-what-you-get-for-your-money   NIKOLA CAN ‘EASILY’ DO ALL-ELECTRIC TRUCKS LIKE TESLA SEMI "New Nikola Motor president Mark Russell recently provided some updates on the company’s efforts to establish its hydrogen refueling stations across the United States, as well as his thoughts about rivals like the Tesla Semi and other hybrid trucks like the modified Kenworth-Toyota T680 long-hauler that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January." Reports Teslarati today: "Speaking with trucking publication FreightWaves, Russell explained that the Tesla Semi would not be competing with its long-haul vehicles like the Nikola One, due to the Semi’s limited battery range. The Tesla Semi is offered at 300-mile and 500-mile variants, though Elon Musk has teased that improvements to the vehicle’s design will place the truck’s range closer to 600 miles per charge." Mark Russel said: "“Their truck is our truck with a bigger battery, and we can easily do that. It Nikola’s recent electric vehicle announcement is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. It’s not a strategy shift. Our model is still attacking the long haul market. We will sell battery electric vehicles based on the same design, and they’ll be great vehicles for those applications. If Tesla can produce their truck and meet the specs, we’ll be competing with them in that market. Tesla doesn’t have anything to compete with us in long-haul"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-rival-nikola-president-interview/   FORD INVESTS $850 MILLION TO PRODUCE NEXT-GEN ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN THE US And finally we turn to Electrek for news about Ford: "Ford has announced today new investments in its US facilities for future production of next-generation electric vehicles as well as Ford’s first autonomous vehicles. The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV...is going to be the automaker’s first real EV next year, but it will be manufactured in Mexico. Now the automaker also wants to bring some EV production to the US and it announced today that it will happen with a $850 million investment through 2023 at its Flat Rock (Mich.) Assembly Plant." Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president, Global Operations, commented on the announcement: “We’ve taken a fresh look at the growth rates of electrified vehicles and know we need to protect additional production capacity given our accelerated plans for fully electric vehicles. This is good news for the future of southeast Michigan, delivering more good-paying manufacturing jobs.”   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #398.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 25th February 2019. Welcome to three new Patreon supporters. Hello to new PRODUCERS PIERRE MARASTI and PAUL COSMAN. And new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JAMES STORR.   ELECTRIC PEUGEOT e208 IN DETAIL: SPECS, IMAGES, VIDEOS "Peugeot released specs for the e-208, the first all-electric model for the brand, build on the eCMP platform. The public unveiling is scheduled for Geneva, but already today you can enjoy a gallery of stock images." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The 50 kWh battery provides 340 km (211 miles) of range under the WLTP test cycle and is covered by warranty for 8 years or 160 000 km for 70% of capacity. The electric motor is rated at 100 kW, which enables it to do 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds. The brisk acceleration will be especially welcome in city driving at low speeds. 0-50 km/h takes just 2.8 seconds. There is also a handy three-phase on-board charger rated for 11 kW. The French manufacturer didn’t forget to add a heat pump to save as much range as possible in winter. Orders will be accepted from late summer 2019, while the launch is expected in the fall of 2019.   The tag line is "Unboring the future".   https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=74&v=2LhRl8wcBVE   https://insideevs.com/electric-peugeot-e208-detail-specs-images-videos/   ZERO SR/F ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE UNVEILED "For the past month or so, Zero has been teasing a new addition to its lineup with only a few peeks at the silhouette and limited performance information to work with—teasing well done. The company has finally unveiled the new SR/F and we now know what Zero has been working on: the view from here is pretty nice!" says Sabrina for RideApart.com: "The new SR/F is using the same 14.4 kWh battery used in the high-end S and SR. What has changed is the electric motor—instead of the usual 7-centimeter rotor found in the current Zeros, the F receives a 10-centimeter unit, which results in a performance boost. In fact, both versions of the F (Standard and Premium) are rated at 110 horsepower and a top speed of 124 mph. the standard SR/F is expected to offer a combined range rated between 102 and 123 miles (depending on highway speed). Charging time is expected to hover between 4.5 hours for the entry-level model with 3 kW charger and 1.5 hour with the 6 kW fast charger. Pricing has been set at $18,995 for the Standard version. The Premium trim adds a screen, fast-charger, heated grips, and aluminum bar ends for an extra $2,000. This positions the new SR/F at the top of the line, over $2k above the SR."   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25IkSwclpGA   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/306810/zero-unveils-srf-sport-model/   BYD BREAKS GROUND ON NEW 20 GWH BATTERY PLANT IN CHINA InsideEVs reports: "BYD has broke ground on its new lithium-ion battery factory in Chongqing, one of China‘s traditional auto manufacturing hubs. The planned output is to be 20 GWh annually using eight fully-automated production lines. The first stage of the plant is expected to be completed within a year from now. In 2018 BYD sold about 227,152 plug-in electric cars, and 247,811 including buses/trucks, which means that the company will gain the potential to significantly increase production. And if you consider that in China, sales of plug-in electric cars are booming, then it seems certain BYD will need this extra capacity in the very near future." And Mark Kane has done some handy math: The 20 GWh of batteries is equivalent to:   200,000 all-electric cars with 100 kWh packs 400,000 all-electric cars with 50 kWh packs 800,000 plug-in hybrids cars with 25 kWh packs   https://insideevs.com/byd-new-20-gwh-battery-plant-china/   THE PORSCHE MACAN IS GOING ELECTRIC "The Porsche Macan is Porsche’s best-selling vehicle, powered by an internal-combustion engine, a crossover that handles better than it has any right to. It will also be going electric soon, the Financial Times reports." reports Erik at Jalopnik: "The Porsche decision, which will be revealed next Tuesday by the group, shows the carmaker is serious about selling electric vehicles to a mass market. The all-electric Macan, a sport utility vehicle, will be produced in Leipzig early next decade, the company confirmed to the Financial Times. Chief executive Oliver Blume said Porsche was aiming for every second car it sold to be “electrified” — pure-electric or hybrid — by 2025, meaning that Porsche’s electric ramp-up is even more ambitious than its parent, the Volkswagen Group."   https://jalopnik.com/the-porsche-macan-is-going-electric-1832867432   AUDI LAUNCHES PLUG-IN HYBRID Q5, A6, A7 AND A8 "Audi has revealed new plug-in versions of its Q5, A6, A7 and A8, each combining a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. At the same time the marque has chosen to drop the ‘e-tron’ branding from the sole plug-in model it previously sold, and from now on will only apply that badge to its full electric models." reports EVO: "The 50 and 55 variants all share a 14.1kWh battery pack, with estimated electric-only ranges set at around 25 miles on the WLTP cycle. Final UK specifications, pricing and availability have not yet been confirmed, but we suspect they’ll fall in line with Audi’s other numerically ordered models."   https://www.evo.co.uk/news/22328/audi-launches-plug-in-hybrid-q5-a6-a7-and-a8   NEW VERSION OF MORE POWERFUL AUDI E-TRON SPIED: E-TRON ALLROAD? Is there an AllRoad version of the etron currently being tested? New spy photos suggest so. "The rumors suggest that the sportier version will get a three electric motor set up, with two motors on the rear axle. The e-tron currently develops 402bhp front and rear motor together and if you double the rear motors, we would come up to 640bhp in total. Maybe Audi decides not to give the e-tron all that power but a figure around 500-550bhp is clearly possible." says InsideEVs   https://insideevs.com/new-version-audi-e-tron-spied-allroad/   NISSAN LEAF PLUS FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: MORE OF A GOOD THING Jamie at Electrek says: "Last week we were invited to San Diego to drive the new Nissan Leaf Plus, the updated version of the Leaf with a new 62kWh battery pack, which will start sales in March. We spent the day driving it all through the county on a variety of roads, and came away impressed if not surprised by this iteration on an already-solid package. The main practical upshot of the Leaf Plus’s larger battery is that the car has increased range, power and quick charge ability." What about price? "Chevy has reached the 200,000 vehicle mark in the US, and this will effectively raise the price of that car by $3,750 starting in April. This gives Nissan a little breathing room with the Leaf Plus, and if they end up with a price which is a little higher than the Bolt, the effective price for consumers will still be lower.  Nissan has sold around 130,000 electric cars in the US, so they still have time before their credit runs out."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/25/nissan-leaf-plus-62kwh-2/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 31st January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Tesla earning call note: Chinese Gigafactory 3, Model Y unveiling, Semi Truck, Solar Tiles, new Roadster, Pickup, Model S and X re-design or use of new battery cells, Supercharger v3, Model 3 demand in US vs Europe, new Autopilot hardware, insane workforce growth and cuts, Full Self Driving and of course the $35,000 Model 3.   EUROPEAN TESLA MODEL 3 CUSTOMERS RECEIVE DELIVERY DATES "Tesla Model 3 buyers in Europe are receiving delivery date estimates." says Zach at CleanTechnica who has been keeping an eye on the TMC forum: “My Tesla Model 3 Performance will be ready to collect in Madrid on the week commencing 11th Feb. 3 weeks ahead of schedule!” "Aside from the good news from Tesla, the German state of Nordrhine Westfalia, which is the most populated state in the country, today approved new electric vehicle subsidies for companies. [Commercial] Electric car buyers can now get €4,000 rebates for fully electric cars they buy, and electric truck buyers can get €8,000."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/29/breaking-european-tesla-model-3-customers-receive-delivery-dates-new-subsidies-in-nordrhine-westfalia-germany/   TESLA’S MASSIVE DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA IS COMING TO LIFE "A recent aerial video of the Lathrop building, located 60 miles east of Tesla’s Fremont factory, shows the completion of the facility’s outer shell and glass installed on parts of the building." reports Teslarati: "Part of the assumption that this building will become a parts distribution center is based on...the numerous truck-sized loading bays denote shipping activity".   Job Ad! “Tesla is looking for a motivated and experienced Supervisor for our highly dynamic parts distribution center in Lathrop, CA. This position will provide supervision of day-to-day operations including receiving, stocking, shipping and all transactions related to said activities. The Supervisor, Parts & Service Warehouse, will also ensure efficiency and accuracy of stocking and organizing parts inventory.” reads a job description for Supervisor, Parts Distribution Center.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-parts-distribution-center-lathrop-ca-video/   TESLA MODEL S AND X GET SOFTWARE LIMITED PACK "Tesla is instead going back to its old model of “software-limited battery pack” – meaning that it is only producing one battery pack for Model S and Model X, the 100 kWh pack, but it is offering two options and one of them is limiting the energy capacity accessible." reports Fred at Electrek: "The company is also moving away from using the energy capacity of its battery packs as part of its naming scheme."   All cars have dual motor AWD, premium interior and sound   Model S Price: $85,000 Range: 310-miles   Model S Extended Range Price: $93,000 (cheaper by $1,000) Range: 335-miles   Model S Performance (no Ludicrous) Price: $112,000 Range: 315-miles 0-60mph: 3.0 sec   Model S Performance (with Ludicrous) Price: $132,000 Range: 315-miles 0-60mph: 2.4 sec   If you want the Extended Range in the future you can pay for it, and they'll unlock it over the air. Ludicrous Mode also appears to be a software unlock too, so the Performance cars will have the hardware and you can opt to pay for it later.   https://electrek.co/2019/01/29/tesla-launches-new-cheaper-model-s-x-software-limited-battery-pack/   VW OPEN TO SHARING MEB EV PLATFORM WITH OTHER AUTOMAKERS "According to German paper Tagesspiegel, Volkswagen admits that the company is in talks with other manufacturers over opening its all-electric MEB platform." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said that the MEB platform could become “a standard not only for the VW Group.” First though we need to see VW actually selling MEB in volume."   https://insideevs.com/vw-share-meb-ev-platform-other-automakers/   KIA REVEALS DETAILS ON NIRO EV LAUNCH An InsideEVs Exclusive on this one for the Kia eNiro: "The first vehicles will arrive in the US in late February. The car will be sold in 12 states: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington." Steve Kosowski, the manager of long-range strategy and planning at for Kia Motors America told InsideEVs: "volume is globally constrained because Kia Motors America can’t get the desired allocation from the parent company. “The truth is that demand in other markets around the world is so strong,” he said. Kosowski explained that regulatory pressures, especially in Europe, dictate that countries such as Norway are a higher priority than the United States. “We have this conversation all the time with our leadership about how we need more cars.” And some insight on battery supplier, which I had read as speculation before, but this seems firm confirmation: The all-electric Niro, Kona, and Soul share the same electric powertrain, with some slight modifications in the Niro’s transmission to handle the extra mass. SK Innovation provides the cells for Kia’s battery pack while LG Chem is Hyundai’s supplier."   https://insideevs.com/details-kia-niro-ev-launch/   EV TARIFF COSTS ARE ‘UNCLEAR TO CUSTOMERS’ "Research from Citizens Advice has found that a lack of clear information is making it difficult for electric vehicle (EV) drivers to work out the best electricity tariff to choose to charge their vehicles." reports Utility Week: "It found ten out of the 72 active domestic energy suppliers offer an EV tariff, with the number of such tariffs increasing from two in August 2017 to ten in September last year. Half of the tariffs analysed in the report offer a discount on a home charger or public charge points, however the value of this discount can vary. Interestingly the research highlights that EV-specific tariffs do not necessarily offer the best rates for EV users." In response to the report Fiona Howarth, chief executive of Octopus Electric Vehicles which provides the Octopus Energy Go tariff, said: “This report demonstrates that time of use tariffs are great for EV drivers, and we need to see more of this sort of innovation.   https://utilityweek.co.uk/ev-tariff-costs-unclear-customers/   2019 NISSAN LEAF PLUS GETS LONGER RANGE IN CHEAPEST TRIM "New California regulatory compliance documents hint that lower trim levels of the upcoming 2019 Nissan Leaf Plus will be the ones with the longest range." says Green Car Reports: "To get the maximum range of 226 miles that Nissan estimates, buyers will likely have to stick to the base S trim level, according to documents, based on California emissions tests and obtained by Automotive News. Higher-trim SL and SV models are likely to have shorter range estimates, which Nissan estimates at 215 miles. In the tests, the base 62-kwh Leaf Plus went 364 miles on the EPA's notoriously gentle Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule. On the California UDDS test, the Leaf SV Plus and SL Plus returned 330 miles. It's unclear why there's such a discrepancy between the Leaf S Plus and higher trims. Nissan specs show the SV and the SL weigh about 75 pounds more than the base S."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121208_2019-nissan-leaf-plus-gets-longer-range-in-cheapest-trim   RENAULT ZOE S EDITION NOW AVAILABLE IN THE UK Renault has introduced a new version at the top of the Renault ZOE range. The new Renault ZOE S Edition replaces the previous Signature Nav version and brings a host of equipment at a small premium over the Renault ZOE Dynamique Nav. Ordering in the UK is open now and deliveries of the ZOE S Edition begin in April.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
