According to a co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain, Facebook should not be spearheading the libra cryptocurrency project. Joseph Lubin, who also founded blockchain company Consensys, said libra “suffers from its greatest asset” — the Menlo Park, California-based social media giant itself. Unveiled in June, Project Libra was originally introduced along with a list of prominent corporate backers. Since then, it has faced skepticism and scrutiny from regulators, amid concerns over the entrance of Facebook into the financial services space, given the firm’s many reported missteps in handling personal data. To be sure, Facebook will not have unilateral control over libra. Instead, the cryptocurrency will be governed by its panel of backers, which includes Facebook as a member. In October, libra suffered a major setback when major payments firms such as Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and PayPal pulled their support for the project. The exodus preceded the Libra Association’s inaugural meeting, during which Facebook and 20 other members signed the council’s charter. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices. Facebook’s New Libra Currency Sends Shivers Through The Banking World You may have read that Facebook is to launch a cryptocurrency, which is already creating a stir among world central bankers and G7 leaders.   This is not just a remittance service sending money via a smartphone, but a new currency. However, some cryptocurrency purists could argue that Facebook’s new digital coin, Libra, is not a true cryptocurrency, although they admit that it could bring digital money into the mainstream.   Critics claim the plans for Libra, backed by a consortium of 28 groups including Uber, Spotify, Visa and Mastercard, is not a genuinely decentralised digital currency.   I’m not a crypto expert or even a fan of so-called currencies like Bitcoin. The price of bitcoin, which has been volatile over the past 12 months and passed $9,000 at the weekend for the first time in more than a year, has been flat since the announcement. Other major cryptocurrencies were also unmoved or only slightly down on the news.   The new currency system will allow users to convert US dollars and other international currencies into Libra, which will facilitate rapid money transfers and online transactions with almost no transaction fees. Which begs the question, if there are no transaction fees why are these companies investing millions into this project?   Facebook, which is leading the project, said Libra will be especially valuable to the 1.7bn people worldwide without bank accounts, who will be able to carry out payments via their phones.   While Facebook intends for Libra to eventually become decentralised, transactions will initially be validated by the founding consortium.    Phil Chen, decentralised chief officer at phonemaker HTC’s blockchain-driven Exodus project, told the FT.   “This project is the antithesis of bitcoin and is another step towards total control of data and users,”   He added, “This global coin is the most invasive and dangerous form of surveillance they have devised thus far.”   “At the end of the day, Libra is not a true blockchain,” Mr Chen said.   On the online forum Reddit, one commenter described Libra as a “Silicon Valley surveillance paradise” but acknowledged that it was still a “pretty significant development in crypto”. “Instead of a monopoly it’s an oligopoly,” said Gavin Brown, associate professor in financial economics at Manchester Metropolitan University and director of cryptocurrency hedge fund Blockchain Capital. But the structure might be sensible, he added:   “There needs to be some level of institutionalisation in order for adoption to happen and regulators to get comfortable.”   Another factor is that Facebook will not use the “proof of work” mechanism that underpins cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, under which computers solve problems to create a block chain and be rewarded with newly-minted currency, because of its “poor performance” and “high energy (and environmental) costs”.   Richard Dennis, founder of crypto network Temtum, said the proof of work model had been shown to be inefficient, and that bitcoin would be “out of date” soon. But he added, along with others, that Facebook’s project had “rejuvenated” the crypto community. “I was told it’s crypto Spring,” he said. “This is starting to feel like 2017 again.”   Whilst central bankers, like the governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney, have given the currency a lukewarm welcome, I’m sure Facebook and its backers have already thought through the potential challenges that lie ahead, not least money laundering regulation.   Within Facebook — where engineers and product managers are more familiar with optimising advertising algorithms or simplifying photo sharing — creating a new currency was seen as a daunting challenge.  “I’ve been doing this for more than a year, like 20 hours a day, and I’m still wrapping my head around it,” said Kevin Weil, who moved from Instagram to become Facebook’s head of blockchain product in June 2018.  Libra was “unlike anything I’ve ever worked on before”, he added in an interview last week at the San Francisco Mint.  “The technology is basically brand new, and is evolving really quickly. No one has any experience with a global currency before. Any direction you look, it’s new — and that’s exciting.”      Libra could open up opportunities for small online businesses to lower the cost of transactions, as well ease the process of selling online on Instagram and Facebook. The news must have sent shivers through the banking and money transfer community. This will shake up the banks and the likes of Western Union, which takes a large chunk out of overseas workers remittances. They are all crying 'foul' about regulations and money laundering when it's the banks who have been fined for laundering! Apple Pay is not mentioned? This will be another step towards a cashless society, a one world currency and less control of our money and privacy.   Facebook has 2.7 billion active monthly users, and it knows a lot about us. It will know a lot more about us once we start using Libra, but has promised to keep this information separate from the social media business.   Check out my book, Yes, Money Can Buy You Happiness, on Amazon - http://bit.ly/2MoneyBook   See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Amazon was just awarded a patent designed to allow for delivery drones to double as “surveillance-as-a-service” devices, allowing them to periodically scan your home for open doors, windows, etc. Pretty cool, but it brings up the issue of the vast amount of visual/physical data that autonomous devices (drones or automobiles) will soon be collecting. THIS WEEK's FAST FIVE > Google won't be delivering anymore tablets. Good. > Google isn't as smart as Genius, who proved Google was lifting song lyrics from its site by using straight and curly apostrophes to embed the phrase “red handed” — in morse code — into its song lyrics. > Three EU Central Bankers are claiming oversight of Facebook's new Libra Cryptocurrency. > Huawei may be looking to Russia's Avrora OS to replace Google's Android (and further lessoning it's reliance on US tech). > Terry Gou is a household name (in Taiwan) and his company, Foxconn, a household name around the world. Now this Apple manufacturing powerhouse wants to become the president of Taiwan and bring iPhone manufacturing from mainland China with him. This week's Tech Bites Winner: The “Amazon Choice” recommendation doesn't mean it's a great product, it means it's the product Amazon would like you to choose. Bad form, Amazon! Our Crystal Ball: Will Amazon actually offer its “Surveillance-as-a-Service” to the general public, and if so, when? Hint: Look for commercial applications first. Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has just announced Libra, his attempt to revolutionize not just payments, but money itself, on a global scale, and Calibra, Facebook’s wallet app for Libra. But what is Libra more exactly and why, after the terrible, scandalous, privacy violating, trust rending, not good very bad year if not decade Facebook’s had, why would anyone in their right mind, or Mark Zuckerberg, think for a smoking hot minute we’d trust them with our money? Tantalizingly — or appallingly, you be the judge — Zuckerberg thinks he has an answer. Crypto.IQ Daily Radio Show June 18: Facebook’s Libra Cryptocurrency Is The Dark Side Of The Force, Has All The Weaknesses Of Fiat Currency, Centralized Into The Hands Of Major Corporations

Crypto.IQ Daily Radio Show

On this edition of the Crypto.IQ Daily Radio Show we do a deep dive market analysis. Yesterday evening Bitcoin (BTC) and the total crypto market cap hit new 2019 highs of $9,435 and $292 billion respectively. Today Bitcoin (BTC) has given back some of its gains, possibly due to stock market bullishness and the indefinite suspension of the Hong Kong extradition bill. The big story of the day is the white paper for Facebook’s new cryptocurrency Libra has been released. The white paper indicates that Libra’s blockchain will be centralized into the hands of major corporations, and the non-profit organization in charge of Libra will be able to change the blockchain’s rules at their discretion. It gets worse, Libra will lack immutability, meaning funds can be frozen or reversed. Also the reserves that back Libra will be invested into various securities and currencies at the discretion of the major corporations running the blockchain, and none of the investment profits will be given to users. Overall Libra has all the faults of fiat currency, and is truly the dark side of the cryptocurrency force. Libra’s centralization is its biggest point of failure, and leaves it vulnerable to government regulation. Governments have a motive to cripple Libra, since Libra is an attempt by major corporations to launch a global fiat currency and run their own central bank, which threatens the power of central banks and governments across the world. Libra will have to get regulatory approval from the governments of the world before it can even launch, and France is the first to say that they will try to stop Libra.

Kia ora and welcome to Wednesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand. I'm Rebecca Caroe and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz. This podcast is supported by Hatch. Hatch makes investing in the US share markets easy. Using Hatch, you can buy and sell shares in the world's most recognisable brands. If you prefer instant diversification, there are also over 500 exchange-traded funds to choose from. Hatch has access to all the major index funds offered by Vanguard and Blackrock. We've got an exclusive discount code so you can buy shares in any of the 500 ETFs if you sign up using hatch.as/interest. If your first deposit is $100 or more, Hatch will top up your account by $20. Today this podcast leads with news central bank signals suggest more stimulus is on the way. But first up today, there has been another negative dairy auction, the third in a row. Prices dropped almost four percent today in US dollar terms but less in New Zealand dollar terms. Whole milk powder prices are down four point three percent, butter down five point seven percent. Today's event takes overall prices back to where they were in February. This auction cements in more than an eight percent fall since early May and will not help holding the farmgate milk payout forecasts. US housing starts in May have come in almost five percent lower than for May 2018. Building permits are down on a year-on-year basis as well. In China, the May data for house price levels show them rising at a sustained clip, up more than ten percent in many major cities. A closely-watched German survey of business opinion, the ZEW survey, fell sharply in June. And that may be one reason the ECB boss signalled that the central bank could roll out fresh stimulus as soon as July, sending the euro lower. Essentially, this reinforces the fear of the European economy slipping back into recession. It also brought a rebuke from the American President. Meanwhile there are reports circulating that Trump is considering removing Jay Powell as the chairman of the Fed. On the trade front, an 'extended meeting' between the Chinese and US presidents has been confirmed at the Japanese-hosted G20 summit later this month. The Chinese say they are keen to communicate 'fundamental issues' to the Americans. Equity markets like the prospect, and the S&P 500 is up one point one percent so far today. European markets were up even more overnight. Markets also like the prospect of more central bank stimulus. This podcast is supported by Interest.co.nz Do you know that we have a full database of all KiwiSaver plans and report returns on a regular savings basis? This resource is up-to-date through May and you can find it at www.interest.co.nz/kiwisaver/funds Facebook has announced it will take on the global financial system by creating a cryptocurrency called Libra, a payments system powered by blockchain and a digital wallet. All this is part of a plan to move into lending. It is likely to run into substantial regulatory opposition. In Australia, yesterday's release of the RBA minutes shows they think wage and inflation growth there is still some way off and further rate cuts will be needed to stimulate their economy and jobs. Analysts now expect their one point two five percent policy rate to be cut aggressively over the next few months. It could go as low as point seven five of a percent by the end of the year. The US Treasury 10 year yield is now under two point oh six percent and down three basis points from yesterday. Gold is up eight dollars today at 1,346 US dollars an ounce. US oil prices are two dollars higher today, boosted by hopes on the trade front. They are now just on 54 US dollars a barrel. The Brent benchmark is now at 62 dollars. The Kiwi dollar is firm against the greenback at 65.2 US cents. On the cross rates we have risen slightly too to be at 95 Australian cents. Against the euro we are up to 58.3 euro cents. That puts the Trade Weighted Index up at 70.3. You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes.
