In this podcast episode we want to introduce you to our BCEN Friends, Sean Elwell and Adam Oliver. Sean Elwell is the Senior Director of Emergency Services, Critical Care Transport, and the Pediatric Trauma Center at Nemours Children's Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, where he has dedicated over 21 years of service. Starting his career as an EMT, Sean transitioned to become a registered nurse and earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice from Wilmington University. He holds a master's degree in nursing leadership and health systems management from Drexel University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. A recognized leader in his field, Sean has published numerous articles and presented at regional and national conferences. He is a Past-President of the Society of Trauma Nurses and currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. In addition to his professional roles, Sean actively contributes to his community as the Mayor of Elsinboro Township, where he has served for 18 years, including 14 years as Mayor. He has held various leadership positions within local government and is currently on the Executive Board for the New Jersey League of Municipalities, set to become First Vice-President this November. Sean also dedicates time to volunteer with the Elsinboro Fire Company, where he serves as Chief. His extensive experience and commitment to both healthcare and public service make him a respected leader in his community. Adam Oliver is a dedicated healthcare professional with over two decades of experience in the emergency medical field. He resides in Gilliam, Louisiana, located in northern Caddo Parish, approximately 30 miles north of Shreveport. Currently Adam serves as the Director of Integrated Health for LifeNet, Inc. and manages three rotor-wing assets and one fixed-wing asset within the Air Division, while also overseeing the development of community paramedic and telehealth programs. As a passionate advocate for community service, Adam is the Mayor of Gilliam and has previously served as a town council member. His commitment to public safety is further exemplified by his ten-year service as a Board Commissioner for Caddo Fire District Seven, which operates in a large rural area. Recently appointed to the Hospital Service District board, he plays a vital role in supporting the North Caddo Medical Center, a critical access hospital that includes five rural health clinics, two pharmacies, and a dental clinic. Since a young age, Adam has been committed to serving others in their most vulnerable moments. His diverse experiences as a paramedic, emergency nurse, ICU nurse, and flight nurse have shaped his approach to healthcare and community engagement, reinforcing his belief in the importance of compassion and support in times of need. The fascination surrounding Donald Trump often delegates other individuals to obscurity, yet moments arise when their stories generate interest due to the nearly-scripted absurdity. One such unsung hero is Jack Smith, an everyday individual whose name gets overshadowed in the headlines owing to the antics of people like Kody Adams. However, the sequence of certain recent intriguing events necessitates moving away from the limelight of Donald Trump to focus on these lesser-known entities. While Trump's actions and policies have dominated the news cycles, men like Adams have been living life on the wild side. Adams made the national headlines for not something that would make his family proud. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol arrested him for allegedly stealing a LifeNet ambulance truck. The reason behind this audacious act? To be punctual for his court hearing at the Pawnee County Courthouse on—ironically—car theft charges.Interestingly, one individual whose life intersected with Adams' on his quest to keep his court appointment, in the eye of the storm, is none other than Jack Smith. Smith, a LifeNet EMT personnel had left his ambulance parked when Adams seized the moment. In an unfortunate turn of events for Smith, his worst nightmare had come to life. He found himself playing an unwitting and unwilling participant in Adams' wild goose chase.Smith, the unassuming hero in this scenario, was shaken but ready for damage control once he learned about the theft. He immediately alerted the higher authorities while ensuring safety protocols were followed, given the theft involved a potentially dangerous vehicle loaded with regulated medical equipment. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Pawnee County Courthouse were promptly informed, thereby facilitating the capture of Adams before he could cause any possible harm.Jack Smith demonstrated a remarkable presence of mind and level of professionalism that resonates beyond the page of an RSS feed update. As one takes a step back from the magnifying world of Trump, it becomes clear, heroes exist in the most unexpected corners, making the headlines and making a difference, albeit without the same amount of attention. But, as the saying goes, "Not all heroes wear capes." In this case, Jack Smith donned the uniform of an EMT personnel and rose to the occasion. This narrative revolving around Jack Smith and Kody Adams serves as an embodiment of the world beyond the realm dominated by figures like Donald Trump. It underlines the extraordinary tales of ordinary folks whose actions, however big or small, continue to impact the world, whether it's upholding the law and order or providing a momentary lapse of amusement in an otherwise serious world.

In this episode of The Real ResQ, host Jason Quinn is joined by Gwenny Lawson, a flight nurse and lead instructor for Impact EMS.  Lawson discusses her background and journey into nursing, as well as some impactful patient encounters. She emphasizes the importance of being present for patients and their families during critical moments. She also highlights the ripple effect that medical professionals have on their communities. One of the stories Lawson shares is about a traumatic arrest and the successful return of spontaneous circulation. She shares two more remarkable stories that stand out to her. The first story involves a LifeNet flight to Omaha where they had to resuscitate a patient who suffered severe injuries in a motorcycle accident. The second story involves landing on a sandbar and walking through a river to pick up a patient who was not able to be carried out of the area.   Our next story takes place in Haiti, where Lawson volunteers with an organization called HERO. She describes the challenges and rewards of providing medical care in a developing country.  Lawson then goes on to share her experiences as a flight nurse and educator. She also emphasizes the importance of slowing down and being intentional with patient care. She highlights the value of continuous learning and the need to carry the right equipment. They explore her current research in mental health and wellness that focuses on building systems of care and promoting accessibility in the arts community. They emphasize the importance of a collaborative approach, training non-specialist providers, and creating a culture of care with the goal of strengthening support systems to make mental health accessibility a priority for artists through task-sharing models and developing strategies for daily life. About Alesha: Alesha is a current graduate Psychology student at The New School for Social Research in the Trauma & Global Mental Health Lab. Born and raised in Spain, she moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in musical theatre. After the twists and bends of navigating the performing arts conservatory system and its barriers for international and low/middle-income students, she enrolled in the Entertainment Management program at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management in the University of Central Florida, aiming to make a change toward equity in the arts industry. As the Covid-19 pandemic hit, with the heart of an artist and a deep growing concern for global and mental health, she transferred to Sarah Lawrece College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts concentrating in Performing Arts and Public Health. Alesha is currently developing projects to design and implement accessible mental health programs tailored for performing artists, through community models. Before joining The New School, she worked in direct services with refugees and asylum seekers with HIAS New York and has served as a Spanish translator and interpreter for community-based immigration organizations. More recently, she completed a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support fellowship with the International Rescue Committee's Technical Advising Health Unit. Virginia Beach’s LifeNet Health acquired Samsara Sciences, a San Diego-based life sciences company. Samsara specializes in human primary liver and kidney cell isolation, research in primary cells that fits with LifeNet’s focus on regenerative therapies.

LifeNet International is working to save lives in sub-Saharan Africa by building capacity within the existing health care infrastructure. By equipping the facilities and training the people there, the organization hopes to transform them, allowing them to save more lives. Maggie Ehrenfried, managing director of development for LifeNet, joined me to talk about the organization’s impactful work and its success raising over $25,000 via CaringCrowd by Johnson & Johnson. Jon & Yolande Hasselbeck Pastor Jon introduced the new semester of Lifenet groups by explaining real-world examples how we are better together. Pastor Jon opened with a simple question: “how can being part of a community change your life?” He then asked Yolande to share some of the things she learned from the book she has been reading called “The Happiness Connection”. Yolande explained that one of the key points of the book was that people who have endured hardships in their lives are more likely to overcome their challenges if they have a support system around them. She also described the fact that we are hard-wired for relationships, specifically we desire to be connected with one another. Genesis 2:18 references the fact that when God created Adam, He mentioned that man was not created to be alone. Yolande expressed that we are not meant to be alone in our homes, our neighborhoods, and our work environments and that we can all be the change agents in our environments. Pastor Jon concluded the message by explaining that one of the key risk factors in the health of the general public is isolation, indicating that isolation increases the risk of addiction. In summary, God has chosen to execute His will through people, and we can take joy in the fact that God has called us to lives of greatness as a result.

His work focuses on increasing access to mental health treatment for African Americans. During his psychiatric residency, he mainly worked at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Grady is a large, community hospital that serves patients who have no insurance and in that respect, it is very similar to Harlem Hospital in Manhattan. While at Grady, he was heartbroken by the many barriers that prevented African Americans from seeking mental health treatment. These barriers included ideas of shame about mental illness, lack of education about different treatments, and mistrust of medical providers. Dr. Hankerson is now using African American churches and mosques as places to promote education, screening, and, ultimately, to provide depression treatment. He hopes to build bridges between mental health professionals, faith-based organizations, and other community-based organizations.
