Cobb School Board Member Criticizes Agenda of Upcoming Meeting as 'Premature' Former GA Attorney General Sam Olens Honors Legacy of Cobb County Leaders at Kiwanis Club of Marietta Mableton Council Meets for 3-Day Conference Friday Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss celiacs disease. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb School Board Member Criticizes Agenda of Upcoming Meeting as 'Premature' The Cobb County Board of Education is poised to deliberate on the appointment of a construction manager for the proposed $50 million event center and examine policy amendments during its Thursday meeting. However, specifics regarding the construction manager selection and associated costs have not been made public, prompting critiques over the absence of transparency. Board member Becky Sayler has voiced objections to the perceived opaqueness surrounding the event center project and the suggested policy modifications. These include the proposed deletion of the term "equitable" from the district's resource distribution policy and an increase in the superintendent's authority concerning budget transfers. Sayler's concerns, shared via social media, elicited a rebuttal from board chairman Randy Scamihorn, who labeled the critique as premature. Additionally, there is ongoing debate among stakeholders about the revised policies' definition of "stakeholders" and worries over the proposed changes to budget oversight. The board's discussion is anticipated this Thursday. STORY 2: Former GA Attorney General Sam Olens Honors Legacy of Cobb County Leaders During a speech to the Kiwanis Club of Marietta, former Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens commemorated the impactful contributions of Cobb County leaders David Hankerson, Van Pearlberg, and Earl Smith. Olens detailed Hankerson's commitment to service and principled leadership, Pearlberg's achievements within the Medicaid Fraud Division coupled with his empathetic demeanor, and Smith's dedication to enhancing public transit and preserving culture. His speech also acknowledged the significant influence and partnership of the leaders' spouses in their endeavors. STORY 3: Mableton Council Meets for 3-Day Conference Friday The Mableton City Council is set to conduct a three-day strategic conference in Cumberland, beginning this Friday, with the aim of outlining the city's plans for the upcoming year. The agenda includes a team-building event at Punch Bowl Social at the Battery on Friday, followed by planning sessions at the Doubletree Suites over the weekend. Discussions will center on transitioning certain services from Cobb County to the city, aligning with city charter requirements, and will cover key areas such as planning and zoning, code enforcement, solid waste management, and recreational facilities development on Saturday. Sunday's meetings will focus on financial controls, a budget calendar overview, and a comprehensive operational plan. Mayor Michael Owens highlighted the choice of Cumberland for the conference as a strategic move to enhance focus and productivity by minimizing routine distractions. The conference will be open to public attendance. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back. Break: HENRY CO SHERIFFS – DRAKE STORY 4: Stretch of South Cobb Drive Near Dobbins Closed for 2 Months The Georgia Department of Transportation has initiated a two-month closure of a 2.8-mile stretch of South Cobb Drive in Cobb County. This measure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of a culvert near Dobbins Air Reserve Base, which has sustained damage following recent heavy rainfall. The affected culvert, dating back to the 1940s, has deteriorated significantly beyond its anticipated lifespan. It is important to note that metal culverts are expected to last between 30 to 40 years, while concrete culverts can last between 60 to 80 years. Motorists in the area are encouraged to seek alternative routes and are advised to utilize navigation applications or the 511GA service for real-time traffic updates. Detour routes have been established, guiding traffic through Cobb Parkway, South Marietta Parkway, and Fairground Street, with secondary routes including Atlanta Street. To mitigate congestion during peak travel periods, GDOT plans to adjust signal timings accordingly. STORY 5: Big Subdivision Wins and Townhomes Lose at Zoning During the recent zoning hearing conducted by the Cobb Board of Commissioners, a significant development proposal by InLine Communities received unanimous approval for the construction of a 180-home subdivision in south Cobb. This decision came after thorough consideration of stormwater management concerns, which were satisfactorily addressed in the proposal. The proactive approach of InLine Communities towards community engagement and their effective stormwater management plan were key factors contributing to the approval. Conversely, two separate proposals for the development of townhomes were not approved by the commissioners. The first proposal, involving the construction of 96 townhomes near Dobbins Air Reserve Base, and the second, for 74 townhomes in northeast Cobb, were both denied. The primary reasons for these rejections were concerns related to increased density and inconsistencies with existing zoning regulations. We'll be back in a moment. Five armed individuals, linked to a recent carjacking at Kennesaw State University, demanded money from Osteen and his friend Willie Ruffin. Osteen attempted to drive away but was fired upon, sustaining a head injury. Remarkably, Osteen recovered quickly and provided witness testimony the following day. Four suspects are in custody, with one juvenile outstanding. The arrests, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, are part of a larger crackdown on a series of carjackings and robberies. Collaboration between agencies and advanced technology have facilitated swift communication and coordination in combating crime. STORY 3: Teens Charged With Bringing Guns to Pebblebrook High School Two Mableton teenagers, Malik Ta'Veon Watkins, 18, and Heaven Marrow, 17, were arrested for bringing handguns, one of which was stolen, to Pebblebrook High School on Jan. 31. STORY 4: Attorneys Accuse DA of Improper Handling of Police Shooting Case Attorneys representing the family of Devonte Brown, shot and killed by a Cobb police officer in 2021, allege that the Cobb District Attorney's office failed to present a complete case to the grand jury, which could have indicted the officer, Ian McConnell. Brown was killed after a car chase where he drove recklessly in a stolen vehicle. The DA's office disputes the claims, stating that investigations must be completed before presenting to the grand jury. Body camera footage showed McConnell firing 12 shots as Brown reversed his vehicle into police cars. Despite the grand jury's decision not to charge McConnell, attorneys argue for a special prosecutor and a fair presentation of evidence. The appointment of a special prosecutor would typically be overseen by the Prosecuting Attorney's Council of the state. STORY 5: School Safety Meeting Scheduled in Wake of McEachern High Shooting Cobb school board member Leroy Tre' Hutchins has organized a school safety town hall in response to the recent shooting at McEachern High School. Scheduled for Thursday night, the event aims to provide a platform for the community to express concerns and generate actionable solutions for Superintendent Chris Ragsdale and the school board. Notable attendees include Cobb County Commissioner Monique Sheffield and state Rep. David Wilkerson. Hutchins hopes to address ongoing school safety efforts, particularly regarding the recent incidents involving firearms on campus. The town hall, open to all Cobb County residents, will be held at the Vaughn Cultural Arts Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. We'll be back in a moment. Break: DRAKE STORY 6: 'A Bridge Builder': David Hankerson Remembered Cobb County Manager Jackie McMorris honored David Hankerson, the late county manager, at his funeral, recalling him as a respected figure known affectionately as "Mr. H." Hankerson, who passed away on Jan. 25 at 77, was remembered as a pioneering African American leader and the longest-serving county manager in Georgia history. Notable attendees included county officials and community leaders, all paying tribute to Hankerson's impactful legacy. Speakers highlighted Hankerson's leadership, compassion, and commitment to bridging divides within Cobb County. Family members shared personal anecdotes, describing Hankerson as a "savior in a suit" and a resilient figure who tackled challenges with unwavering strength. The funeral service, held at Turner Chapel AME Church, included military honors for Hankerson, a veteran of the U.S. Army. STORY 7: Boggs: Georgia court system still suffering staff shortages Georgia Chief Justice Michael Boggs addressed the decline in backlogs of court cases following the pandemic but highlighted ongoing shortages of prosecutors, public defenders, and other court staff. He noted that federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act has helped alleviate some staffing issues and upgrade technology in judicial circuits. However, Boggs emphasized the need for legislative support, including passing House Bill 947 to reform judge payment systems and proposed legislation to keep judges' personal information confidential due to increasing threats. Additionally, he mentioned revisions allowing spouses of active-duty service members to obtain provisional law licenses, aimed at increasing legal availability in rural areas. Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
The Miami Hurricanes are interviewing Leonard Hankerson for a second time for the opening at wide receivers coach. This one is being classified as a “formal interview,' per Inside The U. The Hurricanes have also reportedly interviewed Kevin Beard this week. Beard had a previous stint coaching WRs at Miami in 2015. He's a former Canes wideout and part of the 2001 national championship team. Host Alex Donno explains why he thinks Beard and Hankerson appear to be the frontrunners for the job. Alex has been asked about UNC receivers coach Lonnie Galloway. While Galloway does have history with Miami OC Shannon Dawson, he is well taken care of by the Tar Heels and does not seem to be thinking of leaving that job, where he also serves as assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. Meanwhile, Donno wonders if Keith Williams, who interviewed at Miami, might be next in line for a promotion with the Baltimore Ravens. Alex explains why 2024 quarterback Air Noland moving his Miami visit back to a later date is a very good thing. Noland had planned to visit March 4th during Junior day but will now be visiting later in the month. Alex reads quotes from Mario Cristobal on the The Joe Rose Show on 560 WQAM, talking about his new coordinators.
Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
The Miami Herald confirmed on Wednesday that the Miami Hurricanes have interviewed Leonard Hankerson for the wide receivers coach opening. Hankerson, a former Miami wideout, holds school records for most receiving touchdowns in a game (3) and receiving TDs in a season (13). Hankerson is currently the wide receivers coach for the San Francisco 49ers. Would he be willing to leave that gig for a lateral move at his alma mater?Host Alex Donno discusses how Hankerson would be an excellent hire. However, he's not the only solid option out there. Donno notes that Keith Williams, a passing game assistant with the Baltimore Ravens, has also interviewed. Williams has extensive experience in the college ranks and has been a personal receivers coach to pro bowlers like Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams. Hill speaks very highly of Williams. Donno notes that 2024 quarterback Marcos Davila has decommitted from TCU. Davila was recently offered by Miami and has a relationship with OC Shannon Dawson, going back to Dawson's time at Houston. Davila plans to visit Miami in the spring. Davila is a 4-star prospect out of Midland, Texas. The Hurricanes basketball team now controls their own destiny to win the ACC after Virginia fell to Boston College on Wednesday night. Donno discusses the Hurricanes players who have impressed most in the football offseason workouts. Former UCF transfer center Matt Lee has been a BEAST. Rockland Records was an American record label founded by R&B recording artist and record producer R. Kelly in 1998, having distribution from Interscope Records. The label was home to recording artists such as Kelly himself and Sparkle. Sparkle tried to team up with Kelly once more but was unable, due to past issues. After Kelly refused to work with Sparkle, she claimed her niece was in a sex tape having sex with R. Kelly, which Kelly, the girl, and her parents all denied. Barry Hankerson is an American record producer, music label owner and manager. Hankerson is the founder of Blackground Records. He is the uncle of singer and actress Aaliyah. Hankerson married Gladys Knight in October 1974; after four years the couple divorced with one son, Shanga-Ali Hankerson. Shanga A. Hankerson, the former owner of the Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, has been sentenced for willful failure to remit payroll taxes. 45-year-old Hankerson will serve two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and he will also have to pay back restitution of $1,039,310.65 for failing to fully remit payroll taxes from 2012 to 2016. Back on July 21, 2021 Hankerson pled guilty. In August 2021, it was reported that Blackground had rebranded as Blackground Records 2.0 and that former artists' discographies would be re-released on physical, digital, and streaming services in a deal between the record label and Empire Distribution. Robert Sylvester Kelly (born January 8, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and sex offender convicted of racketeering and multiple sex offenses. In 1992, Barry Hankerson introduced his niece Aaliyah to Kelly when she was 12 years old. I can count as least 2 people that should be locked up with him in this paragraph. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The Borough We Became: Queens Residents On Life During COVID-19
The Queens Memory Project brings you the fourth episode of season two of the Queens Memory Podcast. This season we have collected documented experiences of Queens residents during the COVID-19 Pandemic. In this episode, we hear first-hand accounts of our Queens neighbors who have participated in the Black Lives Matter movement, their experiences at protests, and what we can do to keep the movement going. Black Lives Matter protests have swept across the country in the wake of the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police, with many demonstrations taking place in Queens. Krystal Padilla of Woodside talks about getting involved in protests for the first time, describing herself as a “quiet and shy person,” and how she felt particularly passionate about supporting BLM as she has faced harassment as a Latina woman. Padilla, like so many others, followed the call to action. Born and raised Queens, resident and community activist Ty Hankerson spoke at and helped organize several demonstrations this summer. Hankerson emphasizes the importance of protesting but also the necessity of doing work beyond the day of a march, including getting out to vote. Organizer Tunisia Morrison from South Jamaica talks about her efforts to get a Black Lives Matter mural in Queens. Morrison was distinct about her desire for every person who works on it to be black and to come from the local area. When she voiced this opinion to community leaders, she says it served as a “big spark” for everyone involved. Morrison was instrumental in the placement of the Black Lives Matter mural now on the street along Rufus King Park, and outside Queens Family Courthouse. Lawyer, activist, and organizer Khaair Morrison (Tunisia’s brother) talks about his connection to the community and the work he has done, which includes holding an Instagram live session with his mentor, Congressman Gregory Meeks which drew over 100 viewers, to talk about police reform in Congress. Queens Memory Podcast staff member Anna Williams attended a Street Riders NYC ride and included a recording of her experience. The activist group began its rides on June 6, and has drawn over 10,000 cyclists. The route Williams followed traveled from Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, across the Queensboro Bridge, and into Manhattan. Lulu White of Ridgewood used her embroidery talents to raise funds for the Pittsburgh Black Business Relief Fund. Her piece includes the James Baldwin quote: “You're talking about the people who have the power, who intend to keep the power. And all they can think of are things like swimming pools, you know, in the summertime, and sort of made up jobs to simply protect peace and the public property. But they show no sign whatsoever of understanding what the root of the problem really is, what the dangers really are.” Queens Memory Podcast producer Giulia Hjort and White discuss learning about the Black Lives Matter movement, taking part in protests, and their continued self-education on racism. “Vigil” by Queens Memory Podcast composer Elias Ravin plays at the end of the episode, which was composed in honor of George Floyd. Howard University is in the middle of a scandal where officials and students at the school allegedly stole around $1 million in financial aid from the vaunted HBCU. Tyrone Hankerson Jr. found his name trending on Twitter Wednesday (Mar. 28) after he was named in a blog post alleging his connection to the crime!Medium wrote:Phony grants were allegedly created and awarded to financial aid employees who were also registered for University courses. In some cases, these employees qualified for tuition remission and therefore weren’t charged tuition for their classes. Despite this, they still received large grants and scholarships that exceeded amounts generally awarded to normal students. These grants almost always exceeded legally allowed amounts. In 2013, for example, the Associate Director of Financial Aid, Brian Johnson, received tuition remission, and despite this, also received “University Need Based Grants” totaling $35,400 one year and more than $68,000 the following year. These grants are intended for low-income students who are in desperate need of assistance and in danger of having their education disrupted by their inability to pay. The grant amounts usually range between $2,000 to $5,500 a semester. A current financial aid employee described the amount awarded to the former Associate Director as “unprecedented” and “illegal.” Total aid received by the Associate Director neared $200,000.Unfortunately, however, this was not the last time a grant of that amount had been awarded. Between 2014 and 2017, another financial aid student-employee, Tyrone Hankerson, was repeatedly awarded a $65,000 “University Need Based Grant.” In 2014, Hankerson was awarded another $22,683 scholarship, labeled as a Mock Trial Scholarship. Sources who have been involved with the mock trial, including past leadership, say the team has never awarded a scholarship of that amount and wouldn’t even have had the budget to accommodate a scholarship of that amount.

Taboo Talk, a Christian talk show featuring Lady Charmaine Day (Pastor, Publisher, Author and Motivational Speaker www.ladycharmaineday.com). Taboo Talk helps individuals transform their mind, body, and spirit utilizing the principles of Jesus Christ! Guest starring Dr. Sydney Hankerson. Dr. Sidney Hankerson is an adult psychiatrist who works at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. His work focuses on increasing access to mental health treatment for African Americans. During his psychiatric residency, he mainly worked at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Grady is a large, community hospital that serves patients who have no insurance and in that respect, it is very similar to Harlem Hospital in Manhattan. While at Grady, he was heartbroken by the many barriers that prevented African Americans from seeking mental health treatment. These barriers included ideas of shame about mental illness, lack of education about different treatments, and mistrust of medical providers. Dr. Hankerson is now using African American churches and mosques as places to promote education, screening, and, ultimately, to provide depression treatment. He hopes to build bridges between mental health professionals, faith-based organizations, and other community-based organizations. Some say its Randle Cobb, Torrey Smith, Hankerson or Young. Is Baldwin still in the discussion? What's the fascination with Quizz Rodgers? How many touches will he see this year and what will he do with them? RISERS AND FALLERS - Cam Newton - Is it possible that we are OVERvaluing him? CJ2K - Is there anything left in the tank? Jamaal Charles - If he's back, he's back... right? Roy Helu - Are we missing the boat or is the Shanny fear for real? Brandon Marshall - Where is the love? Seems he's still not considered ELITE? IN OUR ROOKIE RODEO SEGMENT - Looking back at the draft class from 2008, is 2012 shaping up to be that kind of class? Finally, Eric's rookie rankings reveal from 5 down: Floyd, over Blackmon, Kendall Wright & Jeffery over Wilson, and where in the world is Hill and Quick? We'll find out these answers and more tonight on RedvsBlue!
